When duty collides with desire, can love rewrite their fate?
Mr. Evander Addington had his life carefully mapped out—a quiet, predictable future as a Fellow at Oxford. But everything changed when his older brother unexpectedly passed away, making Evander the reluctant heir to an earldom. Suddenly thrust into the spotlight of the ton, Evander finds himself in a world he never wanted to be a part of. The only decision still within his control? Whom he would marry. And for that, he chooses the one woman he’s always loved—Lady Olivia Kendall.
After a scandal ruined her reputation, Olivia never dreamed of marriage. Branded by Society, she had resigned herself to a quiet life as a spinster. So when Evander—her dearest friend—proposes a marriage of convenience, she is torn. The union could restore her standing, but what would it cost him? And would he come to resent the very offer that could save her?
As they embark on their new life together, the tension around them grows undeniable. Someone is determined to force Evander’s hand, and Olivia may soon find herself in the scheme. With each mounting threat, a single, unexpected kiss breaks through her carefully built defenses and changes everything. Now Olivia must will she risk their friendship—and her heart—for a chance at true love?
As the fifth novel in the Courting the Unconventional series by author Laura Beers, Pursuing His Viscountess continues the series. This is a light-hearted, clean and wholesome romance set in the Regency era. All books in this series have their own Happily-Ever-After and are best enjoyed in proper order.
Other series by Laura Beers include The Beckett Files, Regency A Promise of Love, Proper Regency Matchmakers, Regency Spies & Secrets, Gentlemen of London, Lords & Ladies of Mayfair and The Lockwood Family.
Laura Beers is an award-winning author. She attended Brigham Young University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management. She can't sing, doesn't dance and loves naps.
Laura lives in Utah with her husband, three kids, and her dysfunctional dog. When not writing regency romance, she loves waterskiing, hiking, and drinking Dr Pepper.
This is the fifth book in the series. It is a Friends to Lovers and Marriage of Convenience combination that is such fun! Evander and Olivia are both great characters. Evander has to take over the heir role after his brother’s death. Olivia has recently been involved in a scandal. They are great friends and decide to marry. Evander has harbored a secret love for her but doesn’t want to reveal it yet. I loved watching them navigate into a romantic relationship. I love how they are both so open with each other and don’t really hide what they are thinking from each other. I also loved the playful flirty banter between them. There is a little bit of danger involved in this story as well. Overall, a great read and I recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
This just might be my new favorite in the series so far! 😍 I think I say that every time, but they just continue to get better and more intriguing, amazing characters!!
I also highly recommend the audio for this one, it really made it come alive! It will always be my favorite when he falls first, plus childhood friends?? Truly perfection. 😍
I will add the reason I took half a star away was because there was more inuendos in this one, with the marriage of convenience trope, that I didn't care for. But that is my only complaint for it, I LOVED this book!!
Evander melted my heart. 🫠 His patience with Olivia was the sweetest, his love so tender. He was the best friend she needed to get through her past scandal, and the love she needed when she was ready. 🩷
I definitely recommend this series if you're wanting a sweet, regency romance with no spice!!

Pursuing His Viscountess (Courting The Unconventional Book 5) by: Laura Beers @author_laura_beers
••I give 4.5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
~A reluctant heir. A scandalized lady. A marriage that was never supposed to include love…
-Pursuing His Viscountess, is an adorable, light-hearted, clean and wholesome romance set within the Regency era, my friends. I adored so much goodness inside. This wonderful marriage of convenience story has friends to more, lots of danger and suspense, such witty banter, and a sweet tender romance that blooms beautifully along the way, along with a few twists and turns, and a mystery to be unraveled. But, what I loved most was watching dear characters bravely face past wrongs and with danger looming about so gracefully. I loved seeing others chapters who give up a life built piece by piece, yet stand firm and convicted to that choice. Choosing to not stand up for one another, but in standing together as a strength and great force for what was right was beautiful. Seeing them bring out the best in each other was oh so heartwarming and satisfying! It is worth the read, as is this delightful series! For best enjoyment, start in order!🙌🏻📚🩷
•Content: some mild peril/danger, some suspense, mystery, a scandalized past, “ruined” reputation, gossip from the ton, some secrets, some threats, marriage of convenience, no language, kisses only!
-I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
I am loving this series of Courting the Unconventional! I loved the dynamic between Olivia and Evander! I especially enjoyed that there was a bit of mystery thrown into this story as well!
I received an ARC from the author and all opinions are my own.
Witty banter, deep yearning, and the perfect Marriage-of-Convenience!
My love for Laura’s writing only grows with every book I pick up! Pursuing His Viscountess is a delightful addition to the series, masterfully blending two of my favorite tropes: Marriage of Convenience and Friends to Lovers.
At the heart of the story is Evander, a man whose carefully planned life is upended by an unexpected title, and Olivia, who is content with spinsterhood following a past scandal. I loved watching Evander find his backbone against his father’s demands, and Olivia’s selfless loyalty to her friend was so touching.
What I loved most about this story is: The yearning and tension between Evander and Olivia kept me turning pages late into the night. Laura’s signature witty banter is out in full force here—it’s one of the main reasons I keep coming back to her stories! The mystery is an intriguing subplot that adds just the right amount of edge to the romance.
While this can absolutely be read as a standalone, you’ll get so much more out of the story with the appearances of previous characters if you read the series in order! And with Book 6 coming out later this year, now is the perfect time to dive into this series and get caught up!
Thank you to the author for my advanced copy. All thoughts an opinions are my own.
Evander and Olivia have been friends since childhood and the trust they have in one another is unmatched. Their friendship is casual and they both feel comfortable teasing one another and having fun whenever they see the other.
However, Evander has silently harbored deep feelings for Oliva and fears she will never return his affections. But when situations for both of them reach a point where they both need a marriage of convenience, Evander won't miss the chance to make her his wife. Even if it makes his father more angry than he's ever been.
This book was filled with so many tender moments as they navigate their new marriage. Evander is determined to slowly convince Olivia to love him, but it really doesn't take too much. Olivia's feelings are there right under the surface, but she spends so much time focused on berating herself for the mistakes in her life that have happened recently, which makes it hard for her to see what's right in front her. Her name has been drug through the mud for her decisions and she is her worst critic.
Still trying to heal her own wounds, she's very slow to realize how strong her feelings are for Evander, but it was a treat to watch unfold. Not too mention the developing tension of danger lingering in the background because of some of the family investments.
Evander was the second son, an academic by choice and very happy with his lot in life. But when word of his brother's passing reaches him, his father informs him he is now the heir and must stop his fellowship and return home to run the estate. Needless to say, he's very unhappy about this but after much, deliberation makes his way home and installs himself as the heir.
He quickly finds out that there is something amiss with the indigo plantations they own in India and someone is threatening their lives over it. As Evander is trying to figure out who and what is behind the threats, the danger keeps getting closer and closer to home.
I love this series because it so elegantly combines romance and suspense in ways that bring the characters to their true selves and reveals how wonderful they really are. This book was so much fun to read and try to figure out who was the one behind the threats and also to watch Olivia fall head over heels for her husband.
It warmed my heart to see Olivia and Evander find their happily ever after!
Swoony and satisfying, this book is a must read continuation of the Courting the Unconventional series!
Olivia’s become accustomed to the glances and whispers associated with being a society scandal. Yet, the whispers of her own past foolishness, her bad decisions that soiled her family’s name, still haunt with a shameful relentlessness. She’d love to find love and happiness in the future, but she isn’t sure she even deserves it anymore.
Evander has spent his whole life making a life for himself as a second son. He thrives discoursing on the Roman Empire and revels in his hard-won spot amongst academia. So when his older brother dies, tragically and suddenly, he loathes the responsibilities and new title that await him. To make matters worse, his father wants to push him into an unwelcome marriage. Plus there are some terrible threats he’s been receiving… Could things get any worse?
When Evander proposes marriage to Olivia as a solution to all their problems, it seems like the perfect next step for them. They’ve been friends forever, and friendship is a great foundation for marriage. But the heart is a fickle thing, and both Evander and Olivia struggle to know where friendship ends and love begins. Will the pair be able to find love- and also thwart a dangerous plot against them- before it’s too late?
The SWOON in this one! Friends to more plus marriage of convenience was the absolute best combo. The author managed to throw lots of pining and yearning into the plot without adding in a bunch of miscommunication. Lovely!! I think this is my favorite of the series in terms of the romance aspect so fall.
The suspense aspect was also intriguing! I knew nothing about indigo plantations, and it was interesting to explore the complexity of their existence from both a reformer’s and land owner’s viewpoint.
I recommend reading the previous book first if you haven’t yet, but it’s no 100% necessary. It just gives you more appreciation for Olivia, Dosia, and Richard. Overall, a great read that I recommend.
This latest book in the Courting the Unconventional series is hands down my favorite so far! There are several more to come! Evander Addington is not your typical brooding aristocrat. He’s a scholar at heart; quiet, thoughtful, and perfectly content with a life at Oxford… until fate yanks the rug out from under him and completely changes his path in life.
And Olivia? Oh, my heart. We met Olivia in the previous book, which is about her sister, Theodosia (Dosia), where we learn about the scandal that sidelines Olivia from society. She carries so much quiet hurt and resignation. Her reluctance to accept Evander’s proposal isn’t melodramatic—it comes from genuine fear of costing him his happiness.
I love Oliva and Evander!! They've known each other for a long time and he really knows her. Better still, he doesn't care about the "scandal". The marriage-of-convenience trope shines; the tension, the restraint. And that kiss. You know the one that changes everything. Evander is such a romantic, which I find so swoony! His little gifts to Olivia that no one else would care about, but would mean something to her, were perfection! And if that weren't enough to make him perfect for Olivia, how about this quote to her “If you try to push me away, I will only come right back.” Be still my heart!
I also loved the historical details woven into the story. I really like learning new things from historical romances, and the mention of an indigo plantation in this story caught my attention. I'd never heard of an indigo plantation before, and it added an intriguing layer to the setting without overwhelming the romance.
This story beautifully balances sweetness, longing, and a touch of suspense. It’s about friendship turning into love, about choosing someone not out of duty but devotion. If you adore marriage of convenience, longtime friends to lovers, a steadfast, quietly devoted hero, a heroine learning she is worthy of love again…this one needs to be on your shelf.
I received a complimentary copy. All opinions in this review are my own.
Pursuing His Viscountess is another wonderful story in the Courting the Unconventional series! I love how Laura Beers intricately weaves endearing characters in and out of each story and I was so excited to see a happy ever after for Olivia, who we met in A Madcap Arrangement. Evander and Olivia are delightful characters who are dealing with lives they weren’t expecting. Evander wanted nothing more than his life in academics. Olivia had resigned to having a life without love. I enjoyed seeing how these childhood friends leaned on each other when their circumstances changed and in turn drew closer than ever before as they supported each other through adjusting to their new lives. I loved their easy and witty banter, their sweet friendship, Evander’s flirting, patience, and protectiveness, and Olivia’s tender but strong disposition. They were just so cute together! Plus, the whole danger aspect of Evander and Olivia’s story added intrigue and suspense to their charming romance that I found compelling and kept me reading. If you love a romance full of banter, flirting, suspense and two people who charm their way into your heart, Pursuing His Viscountess is one for you!
Tropes: regency romance = marriage of convenience = childhood friends to more = reluctant heir = witty banter = scandal = he falls first = sweet kisses
Favorite things: - The proposal - The flowers and other gifts - Olivia’s kindness towards his mother - Evander’s teasing and protectiveness - She holds her own with his father - All their friends - The touch of suspense and danger - The escape
Favorite quotes: "When you fall deeply - truly, irrevocably - in love with someone, that kind of love doesn't vanish. It stays with you." - Evander
"You love me without trying to change me. You never have. You've always seen me for who I am - and loved me anyway. That means everything." - Olivia
“Loving her isn’t a decision I made. It is instinctive. I couldn’t stop if I tried.”
This wonderful marriage of convenience story has friends to more, lots of danger and suspense, witty banter, and a sweet romance. I really enjoyed the twist and turns of the mystery.
Olivia is intelligent, caring, and truly wants to support Evander. She is brave facing her past scandal and the danger surrounding Evander. I loved her kind, gentleness toward Evander’s mother. Evander is witty, charming, and protective. I loved that even though he had to give up the life he built he stood firm on marrying his choice. I loved how honest Olivia and Evander were with one another (well all except Evander’s ONE secret 😉). I loved the flirty banter they shared, so fantastic. I loved how they stood up for one another and leaned on each other. One of my favorite things about this series is the MCs connections. I absolutely love their banter, camaraderie, and how wholly they support one another.
A few more quotes: “What if you kiss me, and everything changes? I do tend to have that effect.”
“Aren’t you supposed to be charming?” “That depends. Will this conversation end in a kiss?” “It will not.” He sighed. “Then, no kisses, no charm.” “You are impossible,” she said, reaching for the door. “You married me,” he reminded her smugly.
“I want the world to know how madly, irrevocably in love I am with you,” he said.
Note: This is book five in the series and really should be read in its place. Evander’s friends are from previous (and upcoming) books!
This ARC was provided by the author. I was not required to give a positive review, rating and opinions are my own.
📚✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨📚 Title: Pursuing His Viscountess Series: Courting the Unconventional (Book 5) Author: Laura Beers ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
📝 My Thoughts: It was wonderful to finally dive into Lady Olivia’s story after meeting her in "A Madcap Arrangement!" The transition from her past heartbreak to finding a solid, supportive partner in Evander Addington was incredibly satisfying. Evander is the ultimate supportive hero, even when his own life is upended by the sudden responsibility of becoming the heir, he never stops prioritizing Olivia’s happiness and autonomy. I also loved seeing the growth in Olivia; she "handles" the cantankerous Earl of Everwyck with such grace and steel, refusing to let him intimidate her or diminish Evander.
💖 Why I Loved It: * Supportive Hero: Evander’s devotion is unmatched. He stands by Olivia against Society's gossip and even his own father's disapproval. * The "Handling" of the Earl: Olivia’s dry wit and firm boundaries with the Earl were a highlight. She isn't afraid to call him out on his "cantankerous" behavior. * The Epilogue: It was so heartening to see that despite his new noble duties, Evander didn't have to abandon his passion for academia and history. * Future Teases: I am already so eager for the next book to see Lady Jane’s story unfold with Alcott!
🔖 Favorite Quote: "The world is full of masks and misdirection. Entire novels have been penned on the subject."
📌 Final Verdict: A beautiful "friends to lovers" romance that balances emotional depth with a touch of Regency high stakes. If you enjoy a hero who truly respects his heroine and a heroine who finds her voice, this is a must read!
This is the 5th book in the Courting the Unconventional series. These books should be read in order of release as the characters flow into each books.
Laura Beers does a masterful job of creating characters that you are instantly endeared to. I was instantly drawn into the story and struggled to put it down.
We got details of Olivia's scandal in A Madcap Arrangement and this book focuses on her and Evander's story. You'll enjoy witty banter between Oliva and Evander, swoon moments, and the intensity of trying to figure out who is behind the threats.
I also like how Laura Beers writes her female characters. Each of them have their strengths and while of course they aren't infallible, they aren't afraid to lean into those strengths.
I am so looking forward to the rest of the series! In this story we get a glimpse into some of the characters that we will get more of in future books.
Quotes: "Love is dead - or at least reserved for the lucky few who manage to find it. It is a little more than a game of chance."
"You are stronger than you believe."
"Books offered escape."
"Sometimes, we have no choice but to be strong. Whether we feel it or not."
"...women had more power than they were ever taught to believe - they simply had to be willing to use it."
Evander Addington has fulfilled his dream of being a professor at Oxford, but one day this is taken from him when he must take the place of his older brother to become the new lord of the family estate. I could relate to his love for his students and his interest in history.
Lady Olivia Kendall has seen her share of bad decisions and is now an outcast of society. So, when Evander proposes a marriage of convenience, she hesitantly accepts. What I loved about this arrangement was that Evander secretly was already in with Olivia and made it his goal to make her see their relationship could be more than just friends.
Things I loved: reluctant heir childhood friends to more history professor truffles chocolate puppy friends humor, nicknames
Author Laura Beers is one of my favorite Regency authors; her stories are filed with clean romance and have fantastic plots. This is part of the Courting the Unconventional series, and I highly recommend this book. I believe it would be best to read it in the order it occurs in the series to enjoy the book to its fullest. There are characters who are part of the story that are in past books.
Thank you to the author for a gifted copy of the book. I was not required to write a positive review.
I love a series where with each book you read you don’t think it is possible for the author to top it with the next one. That is how I feel about Laura Beers’ Courting the Unconventional series. Pursuing His Viscountess, the latest addition to the series, was phenomenal. From the marriage of convenience to the flirting and banter to the mysterious threats, this book was a joy to read.
I adored Evander and Olivia both together and individually. Their friendship was so sweet. I loved how Beers interspersed mentions of their childhood friendship throughout the book. It was a fun way to show their connection without adding flashbacks.
Oh, my goodness, I loved how Evander flirted with Olivia. His flirting was fresh and innocent, but not too innocent (he definitely put her to blush a few times)—it was so perfect for their relationship. It was such a great addition to the story and lightened up some of the heavier themes explored by the threats.
I adored this story. It was the perfect addition to the series. Pursuing His Viscountess is the fifth book in the series, but it can be read as a standalone. However, I recommend you check out all the books.
Thank you to the author for the gifted copy. All opinions expressed are my own.
Another winner form the Courting the Unconventional series, this time featuring a childhood friends-to-lovers, he fell first, and marriage of convenience!
Olivia and Evander are such a sweet and accurate representation of friends who feel in love. I loved hearing their banter and teasing and watching Olivia come to realize that her feelings run far deeper than friendship.
The mystery surrounding the indigo plantations added another layer to the story and their relationship and allowed to understand more of just how much Evander cares for Olivia.
I loved their personal growth and Olivia’s care for Evander’s family and her strength in standing up to his father, who was not the easiest father-in-law to win over.
The friendships we get to witness across each book of the series also make you want to come back again and again to see how each person gets their happy ending!
You should absolutely check out this book if you love regency romance mixed with a bit of mystery and friendships that tie the entire series together!
Thank you to Laura for including me on her ARC team! I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Upon the death of his brother, Evander is forced to leave the life he has created for himself and take his place as his father’s heir. Olivia, still the talk of the ton, and riddled with scandal, has come to the realization that she will live on the fringes as a spinster. Having her best friend ask for her hand is surprising, but she knows he is doing as he always has, and giving her the protection she needs. What she doesn’t know, is that Evander has loved her since they were children. Once married, he is willing to wait as long as necessary to hope his wife will return more than friendship. As they settle into marriage and draw closer, there are dangers surrounding all they are building. Questions swirl about the death of Evander’s brother, and as their lives are threatened, old friends from earlier in the series are called upon to help discover who is behind the threats. This is a fast-paced, story with a nice mix of romance, intrigue, danger, and mystery. This series just keeps getting better! Although the story is a standalone, I recommend reading the books in order to best build on character development.
This is the 5th book in the Courting The Unconventional series and another beautiful love story that comes unexpectedly to our two leads!
Life is unexpectedly upended for Evander when he becomes his father’s heir and must leave behind his much loved life he has carved out for himself at Cambridge.
Life is unexpectedly upended for Olivia when she suffers a scandal and betrayal. Now she’s scorned by the ton and lost as to what her future looks like.
Friends to lovers is a tricky trope to me because it can hinge so much on the miscommunication trope. But this one actually highlighted the open and honest communication that Evander and Olivia had and that was one of my very favorite things about this! They kept each other in the loop and faced things together.
Evaders patience was amazing and Olivia’s protectiveness complemented this so well. And their banter had me laughing!
Now I can’t wait to find out what happens to Jane and go Addington and whether or not their stories intertwine!
If Evander can't control the abrupt turn his life has taken now that he is unexpectedly the earl, then he is 100% going for the girl he has always wanted. I was absolutely hooked from the start. Even though Evander suggests a marriage of convenience, make no mistake that he wants out of the friend zone with Olivia. I love a friends-to-more romance done well that feels really believable!
The problem is, in the Regency marriage mart, eligible bachelors are a hot commodity, and Evander is MOST eligible. There is an endearing part of Olivia that doesn't want to take the chance on affecting her noble friend with her scandal, but these two find a really sublime, next-level relationship where they provide a united front against any and all who threaten their happiness.
The banter, the kissing and the flirtation factor is turned up to super swoon-worthy levels. This story might be my favorite of The Courting the Unconventional series so far!
I received a copy from the author for consideration. All thoughts contained here are my own.
Another fantastic story by Laura Beers!!!! The combination of marriage of convenience with childhood best friends made the banter phenomenal in this story! Laura also did a great job of balancing the light hearted with the darker topics.
Evander was happy as a history professor, but when his life choices get overruled and everything feels out of his control then he decides that the one choice he will cling to is his choice of wife. He asks his old friend Olivia to marry him (it will help her reputation). They agree to help each other as spouses but to remain friends. Troubles arise and feelings emerge, can truth prevail?
Highlights: Witty banter!!! ❤️ Olivia standing up to her father in law The ladies working together
I love Olivia for being brave and compassionate.
I love Evander for being loyal and smart. I love his charm and his passion for history.
““You love me without trying to change me. You never have. You’ve always seen me for who I am-and loved me anyway. That means everything.” This was an ARC, all thoughts are my own.
I love a good unrequited love story! It's hard to choose a favorite form this series, but I really do think this is the top 1 for me. This book is a beautiful story of patiently loving, enduring hardship, growing in friendship, and having each others backs. They have the most beautiful friendship, and I love their teasing and banter.
Evander has always loved Olivia. Ever since they were children playing in the fields, he knew there was something special about her. When his father insists he marry someone as the new heir, he chooses Olivia, whose name has bee involved in great scandal. It angers his father, but Evander could never marry anyone else, he just has to win over Olivia's heart.
Things I LOVE about this book: - His proposal - The gifts the next day - Their wedding - Her boldness with his father - Her tenderness with his mother - When she admits her feelings for him - The way he teases her - How he's always going on about how good looking he is -Her escape
I could go on and on. I hope you love this book as much as I do.
Evander and Olivia were delightful. I have loved this series and finally getting Olivia’s story was amazing. I’ve been ready for her story for a while. I love the friendship these two already have, since they grew up together.
Evander has to give up his dream of teaching his history after his brother dies, but he finds such joy in convincing Olivia to marry him. He is so fun and teasing with her, it is a different side to the serious, studious teacher. Evander’s strength and unwillingness to never give up on making Olivia his wife was admirable. It’s the one thing he still has a choice in. Olivia may have scandal attached to her name, but she truly understands Evander and wants him to be happy. She is kind, funny, witty and will do anything for those she loves, including Evander's mother.
Keep reading for more mystery, adventure and unconventional relationships in the delightful series.
Summary: After unexpectedly inheriting an earldom, Evander proposes a marriage of convenience to his longtime friend, Lady Olivia Kendall, whose reputation was ruined by scandal years earlier. As they navigate married life and outside pressures, their friendship slowly begins to turn into something deeper.
Thoughts: Generally, friends to lovers isn’t my favorite trope but this one was executed really well. The relationship felt so genuine and I love how they constantly thought of one another over themselves throughout the story.
The communication was top notch here and I loved how honest they were with one another. There was very minimal angst but some really great back and forth of emotions to keep it engaging.
I think this may have been one of my favorites from Laura Beers so far and definitely my favorite in this series.
“You had a place in my heart before I even understood what love was.”
This might be my favorite book in this series so far! Lifelong friends to more, marriage of convenience, topnotch banter, and some suspense with a mystery to solve – I’m sold! Laura’s books are always so well-written and enjoyable to read. I found this one both heartwarming and funny. I was looking forward to Olivia’s happily ever after following the last book, and I’m not disappointed. Both she and Evander are well-developed characters who bring out the best in each other. Olivia is strong and independent but healing from past hurts. Evander is steady and thoughtful but struggling to accept his new responsibilities. I also enjoyed the side characters and getting glimpses at future main characters in the series.
This book is part of a series, and I think it is best enjoyed after reading the previous ones, especially book 4, A Madcap Arrangement.
Content: no-spice/kisses-only romance (some thoughts of desire and innuendo between a married couple); a couple of perilous situations; loss; strained parental relationship; social drinking (no drunkenness)
I received an advanced digital copy of this book from the author and was under no obligation to post a review.
Another wonder story in the Courting the Unconventional Series. These stories can probably be stand alone but this one should definitely be read after the previous book because the stories continue from one to the next.
What is the second son to do when he finally settles on a rewarding life as a Fellow at Oxford and his older brother dies leaving him the heir. Mr Evander Addington was pursuing a life that he loved teaching students at Oxford. He was young to be rewarded a position as a Fellow but he worked very hard to attain it. He had never seen eye to eye with his demanding father who was not happy with his choice of occupation so when he shows up at Oxford he doesn't expect a nice conversation. He is shocked when he is told his older brother died on a ship bound for India. He had no say in that he had to leave his position to step into helping his father with their estate as the new heir. His father wanted to take charge of everything in his life but when he tried to make a betrothal with the woman his brother was supposed to marry, he put his foot down. He would choose his own wife and he wanted that to be Lady Olivia Kendall, who he had loved for years.
Olivia is still recovering from the scandal of her strange marriage and it's annulment. She believes she will never marry and has tried to accept that she will never be a wife or mother. When she meets her childhood friend Evander and finds out his situation, she offers to help him any way she can. When he proposes a marriage of convenience, she at first rejects him because she doesn't want her scandal to hurt his reputation. When he won't accept her answer she finally agrees for the sake of his ill mother who wants to see her son married.
As they settle into their new married life, they have to deal with his father's ill temper and also a threat concerning the indigo plantation the family owns in India. Someone is trying to force Evander to sell the plantation and will use Olivia in their scheme. Evander must protect his wife while he keeps his love for her a secret. Will Olivia finally realize her best friend Evander actually means so much more to her.
I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.
Evander and Olivia are both living lives they never imagined. Evander was forced to abandon his career aspirations to run an estate and Olivia’s reputation seems beyond repair. They’ve been friends since childhood, but one has always wanted more. As they are trying to find their footing in society and each other’s lives, a dangerous mystery needs solved as well.
I loved the added mystery to this lovely romance of finding one’s self and one’s place in family and society. I enjoyed the faster pace and whirlwind of emotion. These two are such a wonderful pair, with the slow burn romance that defines regency romance. Such a great addition to this series. Readers met Olivia in the previous book, and I was so excited to read more about her. I was hoping she’d get a happy ending and I loved this journey towards that ending.
Such a wonderful read Neither saw what their future held. Evander was a second son who had found his passion in teaching but suddenly that is ripped from him with the passing of his brother. Now facing a life with few choices, he demands the right to choose his wife. Olivia, having a ruined reputation, is shocked to have Evander suggest marriage. It could help her reputation but what about love? As they set on this path together, they have no idea of the problems waiting for them nor the dangers they soon will be facing. Can they handle the threats and danger to find their happiness together? Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the copy. This is my review and all thoughts are my own.
Olivia and Evander are great characters. They have always been thick as thieves and best friends. Evander has always secretly loved Olivia. When his father tries to force him to wed someone he doesn't love her turns to Olivia. Olivia has been bathed in scandal after her flight to Gretna Green and an annulment. When Evander asks for her hand it would mean the protection of his name and position. But while she loves Evander, as a friend, she doesn't want to take advantage of him. I loved watching these two characters fall more in love with each other and to stand up to the people and danger around them. This is a beautiful friends to lovers trope.
If you enjoy mystery and romance within a series with characters that involve each other in friendship then I highly recommend this series and book! Each can be read as a standalone but since the characters are interacting the I recommend reading them in order to get a fuller experience of the world created by the author. The author has created a well thought out plot and characters that seem real. They have fears and strengths that help and influence them. I enjoyed the hero and heroine as they are long time friends who discover more depth to their feelings. I look forward to reading the next in the series and revisit the world of this series.
Another wonderful story to add to this series. We met Olivia in one of the prior books. Her unthinkable, scandalous, Gretna Green marriage had tongues wagging. She is doing her best to move on, but spinsterhood is knocking on her door at 25 years old. She and Evander have known each other for years, running through the fields, getting into mischief at their neighboring country Estates. When he proposes they get married, she is very hesitant. Evander had his life all mapped out, he loved teaching at the university. But after his brother passed, he is somewhat forced into giving up everything he has worked for to do his duty to his family. He can’t imagine his life without Olivia in it. The story had so much charm and compassion. The characters are strong and stubborn yet also sweet and tender. I loved watching their relationship grow, their witty banter, and crazy shenanigans make for a lighthearted courtship. The intrigue and suspense of the drama unfolding held my attention right to the very end. It is a clean (just kissing) Regency romance. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
The banter between these two had me giggling more than once! Beers does an excellent job of showing how well Evander and Olivia know each other through years of friendship. I enjoyed following along as Olivia falls in love with her best friend. This is a clean romance perfect for fans of the Regency era as well as those who enjoy a touch of mystery in their stories.
