Every time I think, “How are they going to improve on this story and make it even better?” Here comes the next volume satisfying that craving!
This is no hyperbole! This manga GETS BETTER EVERY VOLUME. If it reads like I’m yelling at you, I am! Go read ‘Fool Night.’ It continues to delve into the complexities of both human psyche and development. It is RICH with intricate nuances that compels you to think beyond the surface level.
I find myself constant saying, “No, this volume’s my favourite,” after reading each volume. It’s almost criminal that I have to wait months for the publishing to get me new volumes, but it’s also a blessing because it allows me to digest what I’ve read. I’m old school, I love digesting content I’ve consumed. Definitely gets synapses firing!
Yukima– I knew I would love her the moment she was interviewing Toshiro– that’s another thing. This manga has several female characters that are not fan service (this manga doesn’t do that), or just exists to prop up the MC. We get contemptuous, loyal, trained fighters, morally grey, big brained multifaceted characters over here!!! Do I love all of them that’s been introduced? No, but that’s exactly the point! You don’t love everyone you’ve ever encountered in your life, so works should reflect that. As this manga is a bleak reflection of a dystopian future, it feels LIVED in! Hell, minus the dark clouds and a few minor factors, it could easily be an interpretation of today’s world, but I’m getting away from my original point. I love Ai Yukima. Daughter of that king (trying not to reveal it for spoilers). I knew she was going to be a problem –in the best way– and I can’t wait to follow more of her story in the next volume.
Listen! Everybody needs to read ‘Fool Night!’ It’s an absolute masterful telling of a dystopian future with poignant themes that encompasses religion, bourgeois vs proletariat classes, consciousness and the willingness to stand up for what’s right despite not being supported! Gahhhh! It’s so good!

another day, another series that i randomly got recommended on twitter, yay! fool night is a a bleak dystopian future where people undergo experiments that transform them into plants in an effort to preserve earth's dwindling oxygen supply. it holds no punches in depicting how bleak living is (especially if u are poor, good fucking luck) and i appreciate how its main cast is not immune to grievous injury or emotional turmoil. bc that's how you get to know them better! lots of morally grey themes (bureaucracy goes crazy), a very creative & horrific approach to the future and nice art. also, there's a character with a :3 face. she is my favorite <3

Suite toujours aussi prenante mais un peu plus complexe de ce thriller écolo sombre qui a le mérite de vraiment faire réfléchir.
Une suite complexe, pour ne pas dire un peu brouillonne pour moi, dans ce tome. Je me suis en effet plusieurs fois embrouillée dans ce qu’il se passait entre les différentes instances et je n’ai pas eu l’impression que l’auteur rendait les choses des plus clairs.
Passant de tomes avec pas mal d’action, ce en quoi excelle l’auteur grâce à son dessin très visuel et lynchéen, on arrive sur un tome plus complotiste, plus politique aussi, où il ralentit le tempo, brouille les pistes, explorent les zones d’ombre chez chacun et met un peu tout le monde dos à dos sans savoir vraiment qui est dans quel camp. Les gentils ne seraient-ils finalement pas les méchants de ce monde ? Que cache vraiment l’industrie de la transfloraison ? C’est une vision bien sombre et torturée qui me plaît beaucoup, m’accroche et me happe. En revanche, j’ai trouvé la narration moins fluide que d’habitude et j’ai eu l’impression de faire un peu du surplace à peu d’avancées près.
Je suis donc partagée entre le plaisir de voir les choses se complexifier et les frontières se flouter, et la retenue voire la langueur ressenties dans cette lecture plus mollassonne et moins nerveuse que les précédentes. Heureusement, il y a toujours un univers incroyable derrière dont j’adore la noirceur, ce qui merveilleusement rendu dans les dessins aux vues très géométriques de Kasumi Yasuda. C’est beau tous ces contrastes, toutes ces formes et ces lignes qui se croisent et apportent une signification en plus à ce qui se joue. De même, le mangaka sait ajouter une dimension humaine pour enrichir son récit et apporter d’autres lignes d’intérêt à ce qu’on lit. C’est le cas avec l’histoire de Kanaeno et son fils, dont la subtilité m’a touchée.
Cherchant toujours à faire la lumière sur les sombres manoeuvres derrière l’office de la transfloraison, l’auteur complexifie sa charge et emmêle les fils. On peut être partagé sur le résultat narratif de cela mais l’expérience graphique, elle, est toujours au rendez-vous et la dimension de thriller politique n’est que renforcée ici et plaira aux amateurs.

Even with the supposedly impactful ending (secret identity revealed!), this series last volumes keep failing when it comes to grab my attention; probably because, as I said before and I'll have to repeat myself once again, it has lost a lot of heart, in favor of somehow high stakes action, and endless conspiracies.
So yeah, getting a bit repetitive and boring...

I love this series, I really do. It's one of the most original mangas I've ever read.
However, the fact that the author keeps introducing new characters is worrying me.
I don't like mangas with a lot of volumes and I'm afraid this series is going that way.
I hope I'm wrong.

every time this world expands or zooms in on little details of how things work it's fantastic. i know it's important to pace those things properly to avoid exposition overload but i could read an encyclopedia of it and (probably) not be bored

I am so excited to tell you all about this manga series. I discovered it on a whim and it was really good. It’s set in a future version of earth where we’ve nearly run out of clean air due to pollution. In response to this, the government has decided that if you are terminally ill or very old and going to die soon, you can choose to have this medical procedure done that will turn you into a plant. It doesn’t happen instantaneously. You gradually transform over a few months until you eventually lose your ability to walk around and then your consciousness as well.
Our main character is a boy in high school who is trying to hold down a full time job in order to afford his mother’s life saving medication. I don’t remember if it ever says what specifically she has, but some of the symptoms include memory loss and anger, which will get worse if she doesn’t have her medication. This kid’s job doesn’t even come close to covering her medication’s cost, plus rent and food, so he’s had to make a lot of sacrifices to try and support both of them.
After running out of money and losing his latest job because they don’t want to keep a teenager employed who is skipping school to work, he is forced to resort to drastic measures. Typically, you can only sign up to be turned into a plant if you are dying, because doing so comes with a huge payout, similar to how doctors will pay people to test new medications and experimental surgeries.
He lies about his health and somehow manages to get scheduled for the operation, which provides just enough money to cover his mother’s medication for a little while. After that, he’s going to have to figure out what to do, because eventually he’ll become a plant and won’t be able to work to support her.
It’s at this point that the medical company that performed his surgery discovers that there is a plant going around killing people. The main character ends up getting wrapped up in all this, because he discovers that he can understand the thoughts of plant people that are so far gone that they are no longer able to speak. At first, he’s just working with clients, helping them identify their loved ones who had gone through the plant transformation process, but then once the killer plant starts to become more active, he ends up getting involved in that.
I’ve only read the first four volumes of this series, because it’s very new. I cannot wait to see where this series goes. I’m not sure how long the mangaka is planning on making it, but I hope it goes on for a while. There are a lot of great themes in here that deserve to be fully explored. I think the people who would most enjoy this are people who really like the movies made by Satoshi Kon. I recently watched Perfect Blue for the first time and it reminded me of the storytelling style of this series a lot.
