After the sort of introverted childhood you would expect from a writer, Liz earned a degree in Egyptology at Brown University and then promptly spent the next ten years producing video games. Finally she caved into fate and wrote Snow and Rx under the name Tracy Lynn, followed by The Nine Lives of Chloe King series under her real name, because by then the assassins hunting her were all dead. She also has short stories in Geektastic and Who Done It and a new series of reimagined fairy tales coming out, starting with A Whole New World—a retelling of Aladdin.
She lives in Brooklyn with a husband, two children, a cat, a part-time dog, three fish and five coffee trees she insists will start producing beans any day. You can email her at me@lizbraswell.com.

So this book only came out yesterday and I’ve already devoured it. I feel like for any true labyrinth fan that this is a great thing to buy and add to your collection.

This follows the movie really well with most of the lines, almost all of them, being taken directly from the movie, and is such a faithful novelisation. There is an extra scene within the book which is also in the 80s novelisation version, so I assume that it is a scene that was originally planned for the story in the movie that never happened.

This novelisation contains some great descriptive writing, and I feel like if you didn’t know the movie you would still be able to follow it in this book which is different to the original novelisation by A.C.H Smith where I feel like there is very little description within the text.

There’s also some beautiful artwork. This version is the illustrated novel and the pictures are really accurate except from Jareth and Sarah‘s facial features. I don’t know if that’s a copyright issue that they’re not allowed to depict Jennifer Connolly and David Bowie, or whether that’s a conscious choice just in case people didn’t like if it wasn’t fully accurate, but the detail in the pictures for everything else is so on point that I feel it’s kind of a shame it doesn’t fully look like our actors. However, it is still stunning artwork and like I said, I think for anyone who likes Labyrinth and wants to collect everything, they should definitely buy this one.

It is more aimed at children I guess with the way it’s written, however I do feel really the true target audience are all those that just love and grew up with Labyrinth. There are some footnotes which have explanations which honestly at first I was feeling like maybe we could do without these, but some of them are actually very humorous and I really appreciated that there is some added humour through them which I feel like is for the adult fans that read this book.

The work around where songs are in the movie are generally done really well here too. If I’m totally honest ,I think the final confrontation scene could have had better dialogue, but that’s just me being very fussy. I needed the ‘your eyes can be so cruel’ line! Overall, great for any fans and one I feel older fans could share with their children too! So I’m giving it 5* because it brought me pure joy.

Also to note, there were a couple pages in my copy that did not print well and were a little difficult to read in places. Pages 34 and 39 - I don’t know if it’s like this in all copies from this initial print or not, and it isn’t affecting my rating for the content, but it’s something to check in each copy if you buy it, especially if giving it to children.
