Cursed by Love, book 2 in the Enchanted Deceptions series, it is a no spice, romantasy loosely inspired by Aladdin retelling with a morally grey hero, a strong heroine, and The Mummy vibes. Download today and get ready to fall for Caleena and Ranen.

ARC COPY REVIEW: I actually loved this! It was a bit darker/more serious in parts compared to the first book, which I think it needed! I loved Ranen, his feelings for Caleena, and soooo many of his quotes. I also really loved a few of the plot twists surrounding Caleena that I did NOT see coming. Overall, a great no spice (but still yearning) romantasy that I loved!
A very exciting a gripping read. I liked it even more than the first one! It was great being back in this world and with these characters, even though the author had me absolutely terrified for my darling characters the whole time 😂 I really did like it! It wasn’t quite five for me but was close. Renan is still my favorite and allllwayyyyss willll beeee. He’s the best if you couldn’t tell. Also breaks my heart while also making me smile. He’s a crazy but lovable character. And wild haha. I was very satisfied with the book, and was very happy with it.
Content: Violence, magic, some hard topics discussed, please see the author’s trigger warnings if you want to be informed. No spice romance.
“Ya amar," he whispered, his breath ghosting over my ear. "Hate me until your last breath. Curse my name. Make me the villain of your story. You wouldn’t be wrong to do so." His fingers splayed across my stomach, trembling as they drew me back into the cage of his arms and tighter to his chest. "Pierce my heart with that dagger if it makes you happy. But right now, in this moment, just let me hold you. Let me pretend I haven’t already lost you.” Jessica Spruill has done it again!! She’s written an enchantingly stunning sequel to the gorgeously romantic novel, Bound by Wishes. If you thought you loved Ranen and Caleena in her first book, be prepared to fall head over heels all over again in this heart-stopping, poetic and darkly enthralling sequel. I was pulled right back into Jessica’s beautiful worldbuilding immediately, never skipping a beat from where we left off in Bound by Wishes. The stakes are higher than ever before, and Ranen & Caleena are forced to wrestle with their forbidden, growing feelings for one another whilst fighting it every step of the way in a world that’s slowly cracking. Secrets and mysteries that were once encased in shadow are dragged into the light, setting in motion a series of events that will either save them, or doom them all. I thoroughly enjoyed watching their characters develop over the course of this duology. I laughed, cried and kicked my feet swooning over our favorite, handsome and morally-gray Ranen. I wish I could have stayed in their world forever, but maybe if I’m lucky, I’ll find another lamp trapped in a mysterious cave and make a wish to be magically transported back all over again. 😉
**** Thank you Jessica for letting me beta-read your amazing story, I loved every minute, and I am so proud of you!! 🖤
After the heart wrenching twist of an ending with book one... I was SO EXCITED to jump back into this world and story! Jessica Spruill knocked it out of the park again with another gripping novel... Although we could guess there would eventually be a HEA - there were still so many unexpected twists along the way that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I really enjoyed these characters in book one and that continued in book two as well. I love how well Jessica portrayed Ranen and his dark, broody character! I'm very happy with how this book ended - I always love Jessica's books and look forward to them.
This book was….WOW! “Cursed By Love” emotionally shattered me and put me back together at the same time! It was a whirlwind from start to finish. I started reading this book right after finishing “Bound By Wishes” because of the shocking ending. It is not often I find books that are unpredictable to me. Jessica did an EXCELLENT job writing two books that have done just that. The amount of details she put in this book really makes it easy to visualize these captivating places, from the sands of Jalam, to the ruggedness of Drakoria, and the stunning beauty of Lidian. Don’t even get me started on the food. I was getting SO hungry. 😋
Caleena is met with the worst possible situation in learning that the man she just married has betrayed her on all counts. That the love she thought they had wasn’t real. She must make a choice between staying with the man she thought she knew or destroying a monster. The way Jessica wrote Caleena really makes you feel for her. She’s strong. Not weak. Of course she is devastated by what has happened, but she is done being pushed around anymore. I love the way she is written, and I love even more how her story ends in this Duo-logy .
Ranen is definitely the type of character that even with his flaws you can’t help but love him and secretly root for him. Not because of his darkness, but because of his deep longing for the only person he truly loves. His story is nothing short of devastating and sweet. You really start to understand his reasoning for why he is doing things in this book. But even with all of his faults, his love for Caleena is undying and leaves readers swooning.
The ending was perfect. I was terrified about what would happen. Some horrible plot twist. Lol. But Jessica did a fantastic job allowing just the right amount of pain and happiness. I truly love these books and highly recommend them. 💖
My journey through this world, inspired by Aladdin, a realm of enchantment, deception, and intrigue, has come to an end. As much as I'm sad to part ways with these characters, I'm truly thrilled with the ending I was given.
It was the perfect conclusion for the MCs. For Caleena, a devoted scholar and archaeologist driven to explore, discover, and unearth long-buried mysteries while never losing sight of justice, of oppression, and striving for a different, fairer life for everyone in the kingdom. For Ranen, a jinn fueled by a hunger for revenge and power. And perfect for us readers, who get to lose ourselves in every part of their journey.
The question I carried with me after that devastating cliffhanger in Bound by Wishes, Book 1 of the Enchanted Deceptions duet, was: Could this thirst for power and revenge truly dethrone love, connection, and devotion?
Cursed by Love, the finale, gave me the answer I'd been yearning for: Yes, it can. The road has been anything but easy, paved with hurt, anger, regret; lined with desperation and longing; and filled with (mis)trust, power plays, and mysteries.
Jessica swept us across the desert on a wild ride through the desert, chasing secrets and possibilities. Chasing love. Chasing devotion. Chasing forgiveness. And I'm so glad I got to witness it all.
Thank you, Jessica, for having me on the team and allowing me to ARC read for you once again. It's been my pleasure.
🧞♂️🖤My Thoughts🖤🧞♂️ 🖤Wow what a fantastic end to this duology! I am blown away by Jessica’s mind to create such an intricate world! The way she describes everything makes it so easy to picture! The descriptions of the food will have your mouth watering. The fierce creatures she created will have you wondering how the characters are gonna get out alive or maybe they all don’t.
🧞♂️Overall there are no words for how much I loved this world and these characters! Even the side characters Arwa was always there for Caleena! Then you have Malik who was Caleena’s best friend and the best comedic relief I was dying laughing at him! I can’t recommend this duology enough! I would compare it to traditionally published Romantasy books! She had me stressed out and on the edge of my seat! I went through all the emotions with this one! Definitely pick this up if you love a Romantasy with a morally grey MMC and shadow daddy with a strong, fierce FMC but no spice here!
🖤Thank you Jessica Spruill for providing me an e-arc to read. I was a little late to reading it so I did read it from KU after it released. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Listen, I don't know how many quotes I highlighted, but it was SO many. So many places where you could feel the raw emotions of the characters, so much beautiful scenery, so much passion.
Ranen and Caleena both have really great character arcs. I love their love story and so many of the details built around that. Jessica KNOWS how to write dark, broody, morally grey, overly protective men. Ranen's character is SO good!! And Caleena complimented him so well.
I did think that the pacing was off in some places. It had a bit too much going on at times. There were a lot of villains that made sense to the story, and would have been much better suited for a trilogy. That being said, Jessica's books always have me in a chokehold. As a (clean) romantasy lover, it's hard not to get sucked into her characters and worlds.
From the beginning, the writing was easy to get pulled into. And there was sooo much action, I could read it for hours on end. (On that note, you might want to read the last half all in one go because there are a lot of nail-biting scenes! 😅)
This book is definitely darker than the last, and Ranen is certainly morally gray. But frankly, I love dark. And the fact that a major theme is light and darkness balancing and complementing each other, it's only fitting there are some dark plot points.
And just as the second half had me on the edge of my seat, the first half had me swooning and highlighting lines on pretty much every page. 🫠
Then I got to 90% and I cried and inwardly raged... (Jessica, how could you?! 😭)
Absolutely loved this duology!
⚠️ No cursing, violence with minimal gore 🫑 Kisses only on page, closed door (marital)
Thank you so much for the chance to be an ARC reader, Jessica!
This was a fantastic conclusion to the Enchanted Deceptions duology, which is among my top favourites and best surprises of the year. I'm definitely going to reread it.
Bound by Wishes was amazing, and then Cursed by Love surpassed my expectations for how the story would continue. It kept getting better. The stakes were higher, the tension increased, and Jessica Spruill created a world so captivating. This duology would make incredible movies. I forgot I was reading sometimes and could just put down the book until the next day. Instead, I read until after 4 a.m. for 2 nights in a row.
Ranen was truly a morally grey MMC. I was a little worried that he wouldn't be redeemable. Yet, the character arcs for him and Caleena were perfectly executed. There were crazy plot twists and stunning revelations that made my heart race and break. I held my breath often and nearly cried a few times. What a journey!
I greatly appreciate that this duology was free of spice. It successfully proves that there's no need for explicit content to make romantasy enjoyable. There were plenty moments of yearning, swoony romantic tension and emotional connection. There's also a fade-to-black scene.
The opportunity to read an ARC of Cursed by Love made me so happy. Already, I can't wait to see what Jessica has planned next. I want to read everything she writes because this duology blew my mind.
3⭐️ ARC Review: We are left on a cliffhanger from book one, so I was so ready to get into this but my goodness this was such a disappointing ending to a story I was kind of invested in. It almost seemed like a completely different story than book one. The characters weren’t the same, the story, even the writing felt different. And the time/setting was STILL unclear! Is it the modern world for everyone else outside of the magic kingdom? I guess we’ll never know, but it was annoying not knowing that small thing for some reason ha.
I did not like either character, I didn’t like the direction this story took, and the resolve in the end was so fast and weird, I was like what the heck is even going on right now? But at the same time I’m like of course that’s how it ended. That’s really all I have to say. I’m having a hard time finding anything positive to even write to make this review more happy ha. Negative reviews are hard for me. Maybe a 3 star rating is too high though.
*Thank you to the author for the ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Read if you enjoy: - Shadow king - Djinn magic - Dual POV - Enemies to lovers to enemies to lovers? - Pet tiger
Content 💋: - Soft fade to black. Basically kisses only - No language
The yearning….😩🥺 if you love yearning more than spice this is your book though I wasn’t disappointed without the spice either I felt the book didn’t need it.
And the plot twists around Caleena it definitely threw me and I love that I usually know what’s happening before it happens and part of me loses interest but not with this, it’s such a gripping read and I think I may have loved this one more than the first 🙈
I loved every bit of it (even the slightly darker bits) I personally believe it gave it more depth. I love the MMCs and how they play off each other (Banter I am a banter girly and I love love love the banter!)
Absolutely give me more of this I loved it all I’ve recommended it to family and friends without spoilers. (I’m looking at those who spoil everything! 👀)
This book was gorgeous I love the cover art and the art inside 🥹🫶 it’s beautifully written and I love the world building wasn’t to over the top and it didn’t drag on all the pieces sucked you in and spat you out in a good way this was also my first ever ARC and I kid you not ladies and gents it’s everything and more you want in a book!
✨ Review: Enchanted Deceptions Series—The Genie that broke my heart (and Rebuilt it, Only to break it again!)✨
IF I WAS CAPABLE I'D GIVE THIS SERIES, AN INFINITE RATING!!! This isn't just a book; it's an experience that grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go! It's totally worth it!!! 🛐 It's the most unique book I've ever read! It's a mixture of every fantasy novel—it includes genie, lamp, djinn, magic, nightshade, mummy, dragons, assassins, king & queen... Yesss, I'm not lying, it has 'dragons'! Omg, I'm overwhelmed!! This series has everything I never knew I needed. 🥹 This isn't the sweet, simple happily-ever-after version of the lamp; this is the story that comes with twists so vile that it'll have your attention pinned! A story where wishes come with a wicked, curse-laden price tag! These series has soooooo many plot twists that actually twist will keep you up all night, Captivated! It's such a unique concept 👀 I mean there are so little of books written about Archaeologists & ancient languages. The Author nailed it! 🎯 This series literally soothed something inside me the chemistry between the MMC & FMC is to die for 🥹 I'll gladly accept Ranen as my Husband 🛐
* Genre: Romantasy ❤️ * Tropes: -Morally Grey Hero (Ranen will make you swoon and scream in the same chapter) -Forced Proximity -Mistaken Identity -Transformation -He falls first -The Mummy Vibes -Strong Heroine -Revenge/Vengeance -Enemies-to-Lovers (Again!) -King/Genie/Djinn × Archaeologist/Princess -Mysteries (A lot of them!!) -Hidden identity -Angsty Second Chance -HEA & many more.. * Inspiration: Loosely inspired by Aladdin retellings, Arabian nights, House of Dragons (I see what you did there—genius!). * Spice Level: NO SPICE! (just some beautiful kiss moments 😍) Honestly, the tension is so thick, you don't even miss the spice! The eye-contact alone could melt steel. * The Vibe: High-stakes fantasy, Ancient Egyptian/Middle Eastern aesthetic. Classic Adventure meets Fantasy Realms
Book 1: Bound by Wishes🧞♂️ He's cursed by treachery. She's bound by wishes. Together, they’ll find salvation. Or utter devastation…? * Plot: The FMC, Caleena—a smart, career-driven archaeologist is finally getting the recognition she deserves when she’s called to decipher an ancient language. Instead, she unleashes Ranen, a powerful king cursed into a magic lamp by his wicked brother. Ranen is obsessed with revenge. To get into the palace, he transforms Caleena into a princess—possibly a bride! Before the royal wedding can commence, Ranen realizes his brother’s plans are far bigger than revenge. They must work together to stop the coming darkness, but can Caleena trust the genie who used her? Just when you think you know where it’s going, he pivots. It will keep you up at night.
Book 2: Cursed by Love🔥 The curse of loving him nearly destroyed her. Now it’s time to return the favor… * Plot: UGH. The masks are OFF. Caleena fell for the most beautiful, dangerous lie. Ranen didn't just use her; he tore her apart. You feel her rage, her broken heart, and her cold, justified anger. She sees him now as a "monster cloaked in charm and cruelty". To save her world, she teams up with the Cannari Mejdai to fight the disaster Ranen caused. This leads to the most painful conflict: Can she truly find the strength to kill the man who still melts her heart with his mind words & actions only towards her 🥹? "This is no fairy tale... Some love stories are meant to burn…". My heart was in my throat the entire time. Lastly, It's for readers who love high-fantasy settings, a truly strong FMC (Caleena is —no damsel in distress here!), and MMCs who are charming, cursed, and intoxicatingly mysterious! If you like your romance to feel less like a gentle fairy tale and more like a necessary fight for survival against the man who swooned you! Pick up the Enchanted Deceptions series! You won't regret the pain.
Firstly, Jessica Spruill, thank you so much for an ARC of this amazing book.
Cursed By Love was a brilliant conclusion to this magical duology. This book developed from Bound By Wishes perfectly with a darker atmosphere, and it ramped the stakes, the tension, and the yearning. Caught in a web of lies, Caleena (Cal) does not want to believe the worst of Ranen. But when death falls in the wake of his shadows, Caleena finds herself caught between the man she loves and the monster he appears to be. She has his heart, but to save her people, she must make the choice to find the only weapon that could end his life.
I loved the indecision of the main characters, as it was explored and enabled both characters to grow.
Ranen being torn between what he was brought up to be and what he desired to be was well portrayed and steadily paced. He is definitely one of the best morally grey characters I have read. Caleena choices are so burdensome as she appears to be constantly battling between multiple sides, and she never seems to make the right choice despite her intentions being good. She finds strength and confidence in herself throughout the narrative, and I loved seeing her develop.
Both characters really go on an emotional journey as they carve their own way through many obstacles and trials.
____________________ Favourite Quotes:
“Don’t mistake your new queen for a dainty thing to be coddled. Handle her wrong, and you’ll realize she’s fire wrapped in the silk of moonlight."
Let me pretend I haven’t already lost you.”
“It’s going to take a while for me to stitch time back together.”
No one comes to this forsaken country because they think it’s hostile, but the truth is, it’s crawling with monsters.
I hated him, shunned his affection, but now, as I quivered on the ground, I was forced to realize the truth. He might be a nightmarish monster, but he was my monster, my wreckage, my ruin. And I loved him beyond anything words could describe. He was a poison I’d gladly drink, if only I had another chance to. I wanted him, every single broken piece of him. ____________________
Fast-paced and brilliant, I was completely taken by this story. The number of villainous characters was phenomenal, and they were all so well written. The stakes are high, and the numerous twists just left me wanting more. The relationships were strong, and I enjoyed every character.
I thoroughly enjoyed book 1, Bound By Wishes, so I had high hopes for Cursed By Love. Those hopes were appropriately high! Jessica Spruill delivered a spectacular continuation of Ranen and Caleena’s story. The magic, the tension, the plotting, the pining all ramps up in this sequel. The trials both Ranen and Caleena face test not only them, but who they want to be and their tenuous relationship. To avoid spoilers, lets leave it at saying that they have a lot of trust to rebuild, if that’s a possibility, choices to make on what matters most and secrets to uncover.
Caleena’s confidence has definitely increased, much to Ranen’s pleasure…and occasional annoyance! Ranen’s grouchy nature from book 1 has morphed into a fierce protectiveness, his magic majorly levelled up, but with a cost.
This book kept on my toes, wondering how they could overcome their differences and how the story was going to pan out - I flew through this book, keen to find out if Ranen and Caleena could beat the odds so heavily stacked against them. Ranen’s nickname for Caleena, ‘ya amar’ meaning ‘my moon’, is still the sweetest thing. The side characters truly come into their own in this book as well, which added a lovely depth to the story. There’s plenty of adventure, intrigue, spice-free swoon, treachery and loyalty to enrich and deepen this tale, along with lush imagery to vividly bring it to life.
Oh and the cover for book 2…just as beautiful as that of book 1!
If you needed any more reasons to check this series out, these quotes might convince you….
‘ “Yep,” Malik confirmed. “We should have definitely kept running.” ‘
‘ “Believe me, ya amar, I know exactly who you are and what you are capable of.” ‘
‘ “Some people wear their fangs openly, but others…” His gaze darkened, lingering on mine. “They wrap themselves in kindness and smiles, whispering promises while sharpening their claws.”
‘My husband. The man who could unravel me with a look, shatter me with a touch, and piece me back together again like no one else.’
‘ “My heart isn’t in my chest. It hasn’t been since the first time I kissed you.” ‘
While it is a spice free romantic fantasy, I again would recommend parental guidance for younger readers due to mature content, and check the trigger warnings to asses suitability.
My thanks to Jessica Spruill for allowing me to be a part of her ARC team; I have loved the journey.
The second book in the Enchanted Deceptions series which I had been patiently waiting for and I've been a little slow to getting to it due to lots going on, but finally I've read it and OMG this was everything I was waiting for and more, we pick up from where the last book ends and I found that compared to book one this was a little darker and twisty, which really fits well with the darker vibes we get from the MMC with being the Nightshade.
We pick up with the FMC Cal who feels betrayed and used by MMC Ranen, who used her blood to unlock the nightshade power, but Cal won't let that stop her, we start with Cal who decides she not sticking round so she decides to leaves along with her best friend Malik and that when Cal learns the truth about Ranen and finds out there is a way to stop him, so she takes matters into her own hands and decides to take her "Honeymoon" to which explains is the reason why they are going on a trip but its a trip to the mythical cave where she is told is the weapon to end the Nightshade.
This trip soon turns deadly and Cal will do everything to protect her friends, even if that is to die, we follow their journey, and watch how Ranen would truly let the nightmares destroy him to just have Cal look at him with the love that he feels. This was full of twists and turns and finally the ending which truly reveals Cal and the true Queen she was made.
Jessica has once again left me in a book hangover with this closed door spice romantasy, that was overflowing with adventure, mission, trials, self-discovery, love, found-family and magic. The characters are all lovable even the ones you shouldn't, while watching the growth in them all. You can't help but feel you are right there in the book alongside the characters, where you really will feel all the emotions and wish that you had the magic that is included throughout this series. I highly recommend this series!.
"After everything I had been through, all the darkness, the anxiety, and the fear, I had finally found my place in this world. A place where I belonged. A place where I could do some good. Where I could help others. And I had found a love that bloomed where darkness met light, born of shadows, bound by stars, and strong enough to defy fate itself. And I knew… my father would be proud. THE END"
Those last few sentences from the book are everything!!!
This book was something I didn't know I needed. I was extremely blessed to receive an ARC of this particular book. This duology was something I didn't know I needed. Both books kept me so intrigued. I loved the adventure, the character dynamics and growth. while this book and it's prequel are fantasy the relationship dynamics are real. People are broken, relationships are hard, and love and even like are rarely felt at first sight. I enjoyed this story showed all of that, both main characters had hurts to overcome and it was beautiful to read that unfold. I was 100% caught off guard with the how the second half unfolded and I was 100% in love.
I love how Jessica is able to take the stories of our childhood and turn them into stories for adults. It allows me to experience the "magic" of those stories in a completely different way. I had no idea how much I would love stories like that. this story is definitely a dark romance with a seriously strong FMC who transforms over the course of the two books. Absolutely no cursing or open scenes outside of a few kisses but they take a while to appear (I was craving a kiss bc I loved the relationship growth and was soo excited when it unexpectedly came!!!). Two fade to black scenes but nothing descriptive leads to it so no awkward or uncomfortableness while reading.
I have read four of Jessica's books and I will continue to read every book she publishes.

I can confidently say that Cursed by Love was a well-executed continuation of this duology. Even though I expected the twist at the end of Bound by Wishes, the development of this second part took me by surprise several times, and in the best of ways! Jessica did a wonderful job with the pacing, the setting changes, and the whole "almost lovers to enemies" thing... This is exactly how you write that dynamic!! Her descriptions of places and emotions are always potent and beautiful.
Regarding the characters:
Ranen... He is an AUTHENTIC morally grey character, and I loved him for it. The yearning and the "my wife" trope were magnificently done; I also enjoyed seeing the tug of war between what he’s supposed to be and what he wished to be for Caleena. I think "Ya amar" became one of my favorite nicknames! 🌙
Caleena- "Even if I died here today, I remained true to myself. I didn’t use strength or magic, just me and what I loved. Language and history." As someone from the language field, this felt like a hug♥️. Just like Ranen (at the beginning), I mourned for a bit the innocence that used to characterize her. However, getting to see how she faced her fears and grew on her own while being relatably vulnerable was great. I was not a big fan of her situation by the end of the book, but I liked the fact that her kindness prevails.
Malik, the best of friends, got me laughing often. Loved him.
Yara... Worst of the worst. I was hoping for a different ending for her, but I guess her worst nightmare (🤭) was exactly what happened.
This book is an amazing ride! If you're looking for adventure, fantasy, swooning moments, and yearning, this is for you!
I am in awe. This is a phenomenal story that kept me absolutely enthralled until the very end. The angst, the yearning, the unhinged obsession, the sharp wit, the character development—I felt like I was highlighting and bookmarking practically every page.
The highly-anticipated second half of the Enchanted Deceptions duology follows Caleena and Ranen into the world of nightmares and darkness, chaos and betrayal, danger and love. This novel is an EPIC conclusion to the story.
⚠️ Potential spoilers ahead if you haven’t read the first book⚠️
Caleena is deeply hurt that the djinn she married, but won’t admit she’s in love with, has betrayed her. Ranen is quickly realizing that nothing is worth causing her pain. Unfortunately, being the Nightshade is all-consuming, and he finds himself unable to resist the darkness, at least until his wife gets involved.
The character development is off the charts for Caleena and Ranen. I loved the deep dive into their souls. Caleena has grown so much since the first book, although, I really think her time with Ranen has helped her stop hiding who she truly is. Ranen is devastatingly unrepentant, until he isn’t. Caleena’s influence on him has been just as strong, even if she doesn’t know it yet. And it’s SO good!
This is a no spice, dual POV fantasy with shadows and monsters, “my wife/queen” galore, mortal peril, family secrets, epic love, and mesmerizing storytelling. I highly recommend it.
I was privileged to read an early copy of this manuscript. It was a dream come true.

Cursed by Love by Jessica Spruill is the well-awaited sequel of the dark and mesmerizing genie you can’t get enough of and the spunky FMC you can only root for.
This book took my breath away with the first sentence being, “Trust is more precious than love because love cannot exist without it.” What a quote. I read this one sentence and I had to put everything down to finish this gut-wrenching book. We are on the edge of Ranen and Caleena’s love story, a love story that was built on lies, deception, and manipulation. Would you even call that a love story? I as a reader was torn between good and evil, and actions versus words. What was even real anymore?
🗡️ALL THE BANTER & TENSION 🗡️Touch her and die 🗡️My wife 🗡️Almost lovers to enemies 🗡️Forbidden love 🗡️Genies, magic, and nightmares 🗡️No spice fantasy
Let me talk about those characters. First, we start with Ranen, how can we care for that guy? Especially when Ranen did everything he could to make himself to be the villain. But, his inner thoughts, the workings of his mind, and the dedication to Caleena was amazingggggggg. Caleena was a woman who had to balance between what was right and what she wanted. How can you choose between those? The fire that grew within her throughout the book was beautiful. She was dedicated and she was fierce.
If you want a series of the embodiment of where darkness meets light. YOU HAVE TO READ THIS!
I could not put down the first book, Bound By Wishes, and this book was much the same! It was an excellent and satisfying conclusion to this duology. The beginning was dark, bleak, and heartbreaking, but, honestly, it had to be based on how the first book ended. Caleena was forced to find her strength in her pursuit of truth and justice, and Ranen was forced to fight the shadows that owned him and the weight of his upbringing. And for what felt like a long time, Ranen seemed to be losing his fight.
And yet, Caleena was his moon and guiding star, and he made the hard choices, and truly grew into the partner she needed and deserved. Caleena herself was one of my favorite FMCs - still struggling sometimes, but finding her power and her voice and never compromising who she is. The only character I really had an issue with was Malik, her best friend, who at times seemed to be the friend he was supposed to be, and at other times, he seemed to be a toxic friend, blaming her for things out of her control and threatening to leave without actually doing anything, which did nothing but leave Caleena consumed with guilt.
There's a lot more I could say, but I'll end with this: There were some twists I definitely wasn't expecting, and it turned into an incredibly beautiful ending to an amazing story. I look forward to revisiting Caleena and Ranen :)
Caleena’s story grabbed me from the very first line and never let go. This is a beautifully brutal tale of love twisted into betrayal, where the heroine is both fierce and heartbreakingly vulnerable. The writing crackles with raw emotion and vivid atmosphere — every scene feels immediate and dangerously alive.
Ranen is the kind of antagonist you love to hate: charming on the surface, monstrous underneath. His betrayal drives the plot with a fierce urgency, and the stakes (both personal and political) feel enormous and believable. The world-building around the Cannari Mejdai is rich and intriguing, providing a textured backdrop for Caleena’s quest for justice and vengeance.
What I loved most was how the book refused to follow fairy-tale clichés. Caleena isn’t waiting to be rescued — she fights, she struggles, and she makes impossible choices. The exploration of whether she can kill the man who still haunts her heart adds a powerful emotional core that stays with you long after the last page.
Dark and unflinchingly honest, this novel is for readers who like their romances dangerous and their heroines complicated. A gorgeously written, gut-punching read — absolutely deserving of five stars. I read an arc of this book. @jessicaspruillauthor

Cursed By Love is the conclusion to the Enchanted Deceptions duology.
I read the ARC of Bound by Wishes, the first book in this duology, so I was over the moon when I received the email with the link to the ARC of this epic conclusion!
The first book ended with a shocking cliffhanger (which almost made me throw my Kindle across the room), so I was glad when we returned to that very suspenseful scene! The betrayal, the hatred, the adoration, the whirlwind of emotions.. it kept me on the edge of my seat. Like Jessica, please, give me a moment to pull myself together and breathe! The tension, the longing and all that banter made my heart beat faster. I loved every second of it though.
This book is fast-paced, action-packed, plot twists that left me flabbergasted, and the romance was outstanding. I might have shed a tear after finishing this gem. Oh, I highly recommend this duology! I wish I could read it again for the first time.
I read an early copy of this book. Finished this book in a day because I could NOT put it down! I love that this author does not sacrifice the story line or character development while writing in the “no spice” space. This story did not disappoint!
This story picks up on a cliff hanger from the first book where Ranen just revealed that he manipulated Rhea during their time as genie and sayyida and he is now the new Nightshade. She is now reeling that she’s now married to the new Nightshade and it was Ranen’s plan all along. I love Rhea’s cunning plans and how realistic that jumping in two feet first doesn’t always pan out. This story takes us into various kingdoms where Rhea and Ranen are put to the test.
Rhea-Feminine but Strong FMC “Don’t mistake your new queen for a dainty thing to be coddled. Handle her wrong, and you’ll realize she’s fire wrapped in the silk of moonlight.” Love how she conquers her fears and learns to cope/overcome her past assault Ranen- Strong MMC No spice, closed door Touch her and 😬😬😬 Shadows
If you are looking for YEARNING.....this is THE book.
I think if you look up yearning in the bookish dictionary, you will find Ranen's name. My whole soul felt completely reinvigorated at how perfect his yearning was throughout the whole book (even when he didn't want to admit it to himself).
Ranen's character growth in this book is gradual, but big moments can be pin-pointed and appreciated. Ranen goes from "maybe villain to maybe hero to definitely villain to.....", and I loved his POVs because it was such a wild ride.
Caleena.....I adore her. Her character growth and coming into herself and getting over her own fears was so night and day from how she was in Book 1 (Bound by Wishes). I love her heart, I love her determination, and I love her optimism. She is the kind of FMC I love to read about.
This story was beautifully written, had amazing imagery, and a plot that had my heart pounding from start to finish!
What can I say about this book? This is the second book in Enchanted Deceptions duology, and it picks up right where book one left off, which is really good since the first book was left on a cliffhanger. Jessica Spruill writes gorgeous descriptions, and I truly loved reading her world building. She is an uncanny way of writing swoony, and I would even describe steamy love scenes without any of the spice and smut that riddles so many books today. I loved seeing Caleena go from one riddled with nightmares to.....well, spoilers. You will just have to read the book for yourself. Just be prepared for a lot of screaming and tears and a bit of laughter on the side. If you ever thought that Jasmine should have fallen for Jafar, then you should read this book. if you love closed door and clean reads, you should read this book, and if you loved watching the Mummy, you should read this book. Just be sure to bring a box of tissues and a pillow to muffle your screams. You need it when you're reading in the dead hours of night.
“For even the strongest king can be swayed when the queen moves.”
If you love Aladdin, the mummy, touch her and die, high adventure, and tension, this book is for you! But make sure you read the Bound By Wishes first. I don’t even think I can put into words how amazing this book was, it was fire!! A battle of light vs darkness, fear vs love, king vs queen, husband vs wife and what destiny could be if given the choice.
“To her, this was a choice. To me, it was my destiny.”
Ramen and Caleena go through so much together. He is essentially a monster, fighting his desire for his wife. She’s a determined woman, who will stop at nothing to save her people, even if it means siding with enemies, confusing her beliefs and losing the man she loves, despite his lies and darkness.
“I married her out of fear. Fear of losing her. Fear that someone else might claim the one thing I couldn’t bear to let go of.”
Again Jessica Spruill has done it she never fails to amaze her writing is amazing and the never ending twists and turns keep you engaged and guessing I love the anxiety rep it’s nice to see someone face their challenges and seeing someone overcome them is refreshing I read the first book bound by wishes and fell in love with Raneen and Caleena but I must say after reading Cursed by love and getting to watch them grow together made me love the even more they’re relationship is great and I absolutely love them
Warning Spoilers beyond this point !!!
Was so excited to find out she was actually the missing heir and that she had two bloodlines ands was totally wowed to find out that she could even control the nightshade powers that amazed me and made me so happy I must admit when Raneen died I wanted to cry but then turns out he’s not actually dead loved that a beautiful story that kept me reading and it was nice seeing the power of love
ARC Review: I cannot tell you how much I absolutely loved this book!! I thoroughly enjoyed book one where the MMC, Ranen, and the MMF, Caleena, became enemies to lovers, but ended with them being lovers to enemies, which carries on for a good portion of book two.
There were two fade to black scenes between a husband and wife with no details mentioned. There is no cursing, which I adore, and the story line flowed very well.
The ending was better than I could’ve hoped for. I highly encourage all those that love romantasy and enjoy following along on an epic quest to save the lives of thousands, this is for you. Lots of swoon worthy moments, I couldn’t help but fall in love with the characters!!
10/10!!
