thanks to netgalley for the arc of all i want for christmas by bailey black. i had already seen a lot of enthusiastic opinions about this holiday romance and, as soon as i started it, i immediately understood why: it’s light, warm, and has that little touch of magic that gets you into the christmas mood.
tropes:
small town christmas
grumpy x sunshine
forced proximity
found family
fish out of water
holiday magic
the story starts strong with an idea that really works: tinsel evergreen, daughter of the grand elf, grew up with a future already decided for her. she’s been promised to chris, the next santa, since forever, and she’s supposed to just follow the path chosen for her. no one ever asks what she really wants, and when she realizes she can’t pretend anymore, she takes a bit of magic and runs away. her emergency landing brings her to winter key, a small coastal town in florida trying to reinvent itself with slightly kitschy but adorable christmas decorations and events. for tinsel, it’s the first time she can actually breathe: no labels, no imposed traditions, just the chance to figure out who she is outside the north pole.
the problem is that, once she gets there, she ends up without a place to stay and is literally thrown into mason kraus’s life. because of a booking mistake, she ends up in his house, welcomed into the guest room, and their plan is simple: quick coexistence, no entanglements, and then everyone goes their own way. obviously, it doesn’t work like that. the two of them have to deal with a growing attraction while winter key tries to save its christmas spirit, and tinsel has only a few days to decide if she’s ready to go back to the life she left or if she’d rather take a risk. i won’t say more to avoid spoilers, but the ending is heartwarming and closes the story in a way that makes you smile to yourself.
tinsel is a character you like right away. she’s lively, a little chaotic, and completely determined to take back her independence. what i liked the most is that she doesn’t want freedom “to rebel,” but because she finally wants to choose for herself. throughout the novella she grows a lot, understands what she truly wants, and faces her limits without becoming heavy or dramatic.
mason, on the other hand, is the type who doesn’t want problems, but life gives him plenty anyway. with the family shop closed, his sister’s bar to support, and a past that still weighs on him, he’s not exactly the classic “grump,” even if people describe him that way. he’s more of a calm man, quietly sweet and much more sensitive than he seems. he’s one of those characters who don’t try to impress you, and maybe that’s why he works so well. and yes, he definitely has that slightly possessive and jealous side which, in a christmas story, weirdly fits.
their relationship flows really well. there are funny moments, softer ones, a few awkward exchanges, and a chemistry that starts fast but finds its rhythm as they learn to trust each other. the bond between tinsel and mason feels believable because they actually talk about their doubts instead of jumping into a relationship without thinking. a small but important detail: yes, there’s a touch of spice, but it stays light and doesn’t take space away from the plot.
bailey black’s writing is warm and pleasant, with a quick pace that brings you to the end before you notice. the atmosphere is really cozy: it almost feels like watching a christmas movie, but with sharper writing and lively dialogue. the dual pov works well, and the magical moments are balanced without making the story feel childish. the only thing that sometimes made me want one more chapter is the speed at which some emotional scenes are resolved, especially near the end, but that’s something typical of novellas and doesn’t spoil the reading experience.
the only downside: please, fix the formatting of the arc because i’m sorry to say it, but it’s almost unreadable.
overall, it’s a feel good read, perfect if you want something sweet, fast, and with the right amount of christmas vibes. if you’re looking for a cozy story with immediate characters and a spark of magic, this book gives you exactly what it promises.
