The Unraveling of Michael Galler

Rate this book
For fans of nuanced, slow-build narratives, a psychological family drama about a teenager whose entanglement in an intense, complex new relationship exacerbates his obsession over his greatest fear.

After observing multiple terminal effects of varying illnesses of those close to him that he perceives as cancer, Michael Galler gains a heightened cognizance of the physical threats that can grow unknowingly inside a person. As a result, he dedicates himself to healthily fortifying his body against any comparable assault.

While growing up with his loving, widowed father and the younger brother he feels compelled to protect, Michael is able to balance the pressures of his young life—academic achievement, high school athletic competition, and even training for the Boston Marathon. But as he moves toward college life, he develops a promising relationship with a girl who too easily fills the gaps of his motherless upbringing—and his long-held fear of what he now thinks of as capital-C Cancer begins to take over. Everything he experiences, he experiences through the filter of trying to outrun a disease he thinks is pursuing him.

A dramatic coming-of-age tale with a dark psychological twist, The Unraveling of Michael Galler explores the motives of a teenage boy so overwhelmed by an obsessive fear that he loses his grip on reality.

The Unraveling of Michael Galler by Steven M. Rubin

Release Date: May 12, 2026

This is a slow-building story where you read about Michael Galler’s life, thoughts, and feelings. You invest your time reading about Michael that when Michael starts to behave differently you start to worry for him. There’s a lot of complex feelings regarding his fear of Cancer and how he connects Cancer to certain aspects of his life. This was definitely a slow building story and the final twist at the end was amazing. I was devastated that the book ended that way but it definitely lingered in my mind for a while.

4.5!!

This one was so intriguing! It really hooked me in the beginning with starting off in Michael’s head and reading his thoughts and also all the different POVs.
This is such an enchanting and memorable coming of age, thriller, suspenseful novel with lots of family drama all in one.
I liked how this one was written- it makes for lots of speculation about the emotions of the characters and has a lot of symbolism and speculation and also a great deal of mystery.
The portrayal of health issues (that takes over Michael’s mind, especially) and the different family dynamics is written out so well!, and I couldn’t get enough!
This story was so consuming with just-as-consuming character stories and arcs!
I really loved the progression of Michael and Daniel’s life- such a beautiful, tragic, suspenseful story
How everything played out and the psychological aspects intertwined with the stories and characters’ POVs with their thoughts!
Overall, I really loved this one! I definitely recommend if you’re looking for a coming of age psychological thriller novel!

Thank you to Book Sparks and the author for the advanced reader copy of this dark psychological thriller debut.

This was nothing like what I was expecting, but still extremely compelling. This is a deep dive into the psychological repercussions of a pre-teen watching his mother die from cancer, but not truly understanding what cancer is. Michael develops a theory that cancer is trying to kill him and everyone in his family by any means. If anything goes wrong in his life, it is cancer trying another approach. As he is growing up this obsession steers every aspect of his life until he finds a new obsession and starts to unravel at a much higher rate.

While I was invested in Michael's journey and overall enjoyed this novel, you could definitely tell it was written by a man. Not only because of the extremely cringe description of Michael's first sexual encounter, but because of the inability to sit in uncomfortable emotions. This book has good bones and an award winning idea, but every time it would get to a deep heart felt moment the author followed it up with an overexplanation as deflection. This novel is very much character driven, but this deflection kept you from being deeply invested in the character.

This was still a great debut and I will definitely pick up the author's next book.

In the most non-sexual way possible, this book is basically the thriller version of edging a reader for 300+ pages. Every paragraph is somehow written in such a way that I constantly felt on the edge of my seat like something terrible was being foreshadowed. And yet, I never actually knew what that terrible something was until the very end. Take the title, for example. Michael is doing so well in life. Why does he unravel?? How does he unravel?? What does unraveling mean for him?? I think it was for that reason that I could. not. stop. reading. I had 80 plants to plant this weekend, but did I get that done? No, because I needed to find out what happened to Michael Galler.

Rubin is also able to write such a creative ending to this story. I would never describe it has a happy ending, but it's the happiest way things could end for the main character. Dark and twisty in such an interesting way.

This is an amazing psychological family drama with a nice slow build about Michael who as a teenager coming of age has to deal with some relatable struggles like relationships, anxiety and fear, a tough family situation and more. After losing his mother and some scary health issues with his father, the nerves and fears grow and that feeling oozes from each chapter. I loved Michael’s character and felt so much empathy for him. At times there was humor and other times I felt sad and scared. I became so invested in this book and everyone in it that I struggled when it ended, but in a good way that only a truly good piece of literature does for me. I’ll be reading this book again and again. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Whew… this one had me staring at the ceiling after I finished reading. Gosh, this was a dark one.
This is a coming-of-age psychological drama about a boy named Micheal Galler who becomes obsessed with cancer after losing his mother at a young age. We follow him from childhood all the way into adulthood, and through certain events (no spoilers here), that obsession keeps growing until he slowly begins to lose his grip on reality.

This is one of those books you really need to take your time with. It’s incredibly in-depth, fully exploring Micheal’s upbringing, his family dynamics, and his personal relationships. Because of that buildup, watching everything he has to face by the end genuinely felt like watching someone I knew unravel...hence the title of this book.

It’s one of the saddest and most depressing books I’ve read in a long while, and the ending… gosh, that ending is going to stay with me FOREVER. GAH.

Thank you so much BookSparks and the Author for the gifted copy! 🫶

A slow spiral into obsession that I couldn’t look away from.

This story follows a teenage boy who becomes increasingly fixated on illness after witnessing the struggles of those around him and from that moment on, his entire world begins to unravel around fear and obsession.

Character-driven and quietly intense, it’s a heavier read that really makes you reflect. Not an easy read, but one that held my attention from start to finish.

A dark, introspective journey that I genuinely enjoyed and found deeply thought-provoking.

In this coming-of-age story with psychological depth, Rubin deals deftly with the important and timely topics of loss, obsession, and mental health. Even if I might have wanted Michael or Daniel to do one or another thing differently, Rubin’s narrative always made their choices believable. And—believe me—you don’t want to miss the remarkably clever ending! I didn’t see it coming.

Wow...that was complex. But aren't families always complicated? It is a very, very slow build and a little tough to get through in the beginning. Definitely a thought-provoking read that will make you reflect. Do not expect a light-hearted read, but it will keep you on your toes.

Whoa—the ending of this book completely unraveled me: it was wonderfully unexpected. This is a well-paced psychological thriller that delves into the core of a fragile human mind. I highly recommend it.

For fans of:
Coming of age
Psychological drama
Complex family dynamics
Relationships
Finding your voice
Peer pressure
Mommy issues

This one was a little hard for me to get into at first, but I’m really glad I stuck with it.

It does start slow (and yes, I was impatient lol), but once it picks up, it really gets under your skin.

The story follows a teenage boy who becomes fixated on the idea of getting sick after seeing people around him struggle. From there, everything in his life kind of spirals around that fear.

It’s very character-driven, a bit unsettling, and honestly pretty intense in a quiet way. Not a light read, but definitely a thought-provoking one.
