I don’t have the words. This quiet and grief filled horror book left my heart broken and aching. It gives us a glimpse of the true, at home horrors that happen to too many children in this world. 6 year old Ellie is forced into the caretaking role of herself and her infant brother Sam, while her mom battles drug addiction and possibly some mental health issues after her father left their family. she craves love and attention, so when something shows up at her window in the night with her fathers face, she has no choice but to grasp onto the hope of him being the parent she needs. And the last line of the book completely shattered me 😭

This book gave me the same ache in my chest I got when reading In the Tall Trees by Angel Van Atta, so I knew I was going to love it. This is the perfect example of well written horror that doesn’t need to jump out and be in your face, which makes it all the more horrifying. I find myself reeling at the fact that this is Corienne Westbrook’s first book! The writing was incredible and I could feel the heaviness of the words in my chest.

Thank you SO MUCH @corinnewestbrook for this gifted copy! This is a book that will stay with me for a long time 🖤

Title: The Hollow One
By: Corinne Westbrook
Publisher: Permuted Press
Published Date: May 26, 2026
ASIN: B0GTRNYXN3
Page Count: 254
Triggers: Child neglect, addiction, grief, family trauma, unsettling supernatural elements, emotional abuse

Star Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Skull Dread Rating: 💀 💀 💀

What Did I Just Walk Into?
A rundown house, a child carrying far too much, a baby depending on her, and something outside the window pretending to be comfort. So naturally this book reached into my chest, grabbed my emotional stability, and made itself at home. The Hollow One is not the kind of horror that barrels in covered in blood and screaming for attention. It creeps up quietly, sits beside you, and waits until you realize the real nightmare is what this little girl has already been forced to survive.

Here’s What Slapped:
Corinne Westbrook understands that atmosphere is not just fog, creaky floorboards, and spooky woods. It is pressure. It is silence. It is the feeling that a house has been holding its breath for too long. The setting does a lot of work here, but Ellie is what makes the book hit like a truck. She is written with such painful sincerity that every choice she makes feels loaded. You are not just watching a haunting unfold. You are watching a child try to make sense of danger, love, memory, and neglect with tools no child should need.

The supernatural thread is strong, but what makes it land is how tightly it is tied to the emotional core. This is horror that understands monsters do not need horns to be terrifying. Sometimes they look like grief. Sometimes they look like abandonment. Sometimes they stand outside a window wearing the face you miss most. Rude. Effective. Deeply unsettling.

Westbrook’s prose also deserves its flowers. The writing is sharp without showing off, lyrical without becoming purple soup, and restrained enough to let the dread do its work. The book trusts the reader, which I appreciate, because nothing kills horror faster than a novel elbowing you every three pages like, “Did you catch that? It’s symbolic.”

What Could’ve Been Better:
Very little, honestly. Readers who want nonstop chaos or gore flying through the drywall may find this too quiet for their tastes. This is a slow tightening, not a sprint. But if you are willing to let it build, it absolutely pays off.

Perfect for Readers Who Love:
Psychological horror, broken family horror, literary supernatural dread, and stories that hurt your feelings before they ruin your sleep.

You'll feel for Ellie, you'll fear for Ellie, and you won't forget Ellie.

If you're looking for a horror story that haunts your heart as much as it chills your bones, this is it. Corinne Westbrook has crafted something incredibly intimate here, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about Ellie since I closed the book.

The way Westbrook weaves her words is masterful. Throughout the story, I found myself caught in this constant tug-of-war between deep sadness and genuine fear. One moment I wanted to cry for Ellie—a child carrying the weight of the world on her small shoulders—and the next, I was looking over my own shoulder. It’s a rare talent to be able to tug at someone’s heartstrings while simultaneously making their skin crawl.

I’ll be honest: I’m usually not a huge fan of third-person narratives. I often find them a bit detached compared to dialogue-heavy stories, but this book is a total exception. I felt completely immersed in Ellie’s world. The author captures the isolation of being "unseen" so well that you start to realize how much of Ellie lives in all of us. We’ve all had moments where we felt forgotten or misunderstood, and that relatability makes the horror hits even harder.

The story deals with some heavy themes, specifically how different people cope with trauma and exhaustion. We see the stark contrast between those who turn to substances to drown out reality and those, like Ellie, who cling to hope and imagination just to survive.
One of the most profound "aha" moments for me was the book's commentary on how we label "shy" children. Often, adults call a child shy because it’s a comfortable, easy excuse to avoid a deeper, more painful truth. In reality, that silence isn't shyness—it’s fear. It’s a heavy realization that definitely stays with you.

The book is a "literary horror" in the truest sense. It’s atmospheric, dark, and deeply emotional. The emotional depth and the way the author handles the "monsters" (both literal and metaphorical).

If I have one gripe, it’s the ending. While the mystery of the "figure" at the window is terrifying and the lore is fascinating, I felt a little left hanging. I was craving just a bit more closure regarding the fate of certain characters and the ultimate origin of the entity.

Corinne Westbrook is definitely an author to watch. If you want a ghost story where the scariest thing is the silence inside the house, pick this one up.

I just finished an early copy of The Hollow One, and Corinne Westbrook has crafted something truly special and devastating. This book is perfectly bittersweet, blending heartbreaking emotion with profound meaning in a way that lingers long after the last page.

This is horror at its finest: heartbreaking, profoundly meaningful, and unflinching in its exploration of parental neglect, addiction, and the crushing weight of responsibility thrust onto a child. At its core, it's the story of a young girl forced to become the parent to her vulnerable baby brother amid a crumbling family, delivering raw emotional truth that cuts deep.

The symbolism is strong and poetic, woven seamlessly into the story without ever feeling forced or heavy-handed. It unfolds naturally, enriching every scene and making the entire narrative feel tragically real. The characters' pain, the stakes, the atmosphere: everything grounds itself in raw, authentic tragedy that hits hard.

From the first pages, it's gripping and utterly captivating. The tension simmers and builds relentlessly, pulling you into a world that's both beautiful and terrifying. Westbrook's writing is evocative and precise, masterfully balancing raw vulnerability with creeping, atmospheric unease.

This leans into psychological horror and emotional/family trauma horror, with subtle undertones of body horror and monstrous inheritance that ground the supernatural in devastating human reality. It's the kind of story that haunts your heart as much as it chills your spine.

If you're drawn to horror that digs into broken families, sacrifice, addiction's ripple effects, and the monstrous things we do (or become) for love, The Hollow One is essential. It's easily one of the most impactful and moving reads I've had in ages. Highly, highly recommended.

Pre-orders will be worth it—this one's going to resonate with fans of thoughtful, tragic horror. Can't wait for more readers to discover it. #TheHollowOne #CorinneWestbrook #Horror #PsychologicalHorror #FamilyTraumaHorror #ARCreview

Dark, chilling, mesmerizing, heartbreaking, and hard to put down, The Hollow One is a devastating book about a parentified child who must cope with things no child her age should. Ellie is a six-year-old young girl who primarily cares for her baby brother, Sam. Their mother is often absent, locked away in her room, or out of the home. Ellie feeds, bathes, and comforts her baby brother but who is there to comfort her???

This book is horrifying, but not in the way most horror books are. This book looks at the real-life horrors that Ellie, a small child herself, faces in this book. I instantly felt for her and all that she was going through. I also felt the tension, the dread, the unsettling moments, and the burden Ellie felt while caring for Sam. Yes, there is a supernatural element, but that builds slowly over the course of this book. As Ellie was being visited at her bedroom window, I watched with apprehension and dread.

Man, this book reached into my chest, pulled out my heart, stomped on it a little, before casting it aside. This book had me feeling all kinds of feelings. I wanted to pick up both Ellie and Sam and cradle them in my arms and keep them safe. This book touches on some difficult subjects such as loss, grief, neglect, and addiction amongst other things. This book is also wonderfully written, well thought out, and chilling.

Thank you to Post Hill Press | Permuted Press and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

A brilliantly written and absolutely devastating horror that was simultaneously difficult to read due to the truly disturbing life of our main character, and at the same time it was almost impossible to put down!

Written from the point of view of our main character who is a six year old child, left by her father and living with an awful and absent, I would also call abusive, mother, we see how cruel life can be - so much so, that at certain points you question who is actually the evil one. Ellie is left to take care of herself while also taking care of her six month old brother, because their mother can't be bothered to do so. Her life is so sad, she craves a parent figure, so when one night her father comes from the woods, knocking on her bedroom window, she lets him in, even though deep down she knows that's not really him.

The author, who is also a journalist, wrote the book in a way that you feel like you're reading about real people and your heart will start to hurt about the two kids. It's especially hard if you like me, have children.

Even though I don't think I ever read a book like this, I would highly recommend it to every horror reader, especially if you like horror that's rooted in reality (but take into consideration that the plot revolves around a small child) and to the fans of books like "Incidents around the house".

A big thank you to NetGalley and Post Hill Press for giving me the opportunity to read this debut in exchange for my honest opinion!

Requirement for reading this book is that you make sure it's daytime. So glad I read it all in one sitting, on a Saturday morning in my naturally sun lit living room watching the red house finches build a nest in my hanging Mother's Day planter on my porch.
I honestly did not know what to expect, just that I knew it would be creepy. It had so much more than I expected, the POV especially being a young girl vs being an adult, that made my heart break just a bit. The trauma, the life style, all of it.
Then the fact that this was a horror story, like the evil doesnt come unless you're open to it, or invite it in. This stood true with that, and man, I just wanted to hug her so much.
At the end of the book, the author mentioned the story stemming from emotional truths and realities, I would be so interested in what realities she had experienced. Cause gosh, I too have had some haunting experiences.
The author did a good job in keeping my attention. Heck, I read it all in one sitting, I was sat! Definitely a must read to those who enjoy horror, thrill, and the unknown.
Thank you to Netgalley for a chance to obtain this early advance reader copy of this book! I saw it in the read now and it sounded so interesting. These words are entirely my own.

I received an ARC for The Hollow One from Netgalley for my honest opinion on it.

Oh my! The Hollow One by Corinne Westbrook is terrifying and hauntingly sad. I couldn't put it down, but it felt like a car crash in my hands. Ellie, a first grader, takes care of her 6 month old brother, Sam, and herself. She takes herself to school and rushes home to take care of Sam. Her mother is either out of the house or in her room. Slowly Ellie lets her father in, but who or what exactly is he. Saying more will give it away and this one you will need to experience for yourself. (I will say make sure that you check TWs)

The spiral that this book took me on went hard and deep. I was reading it, having to know how it ended, but wasn't really sure that I wanted to know. I read it in 24 hours and woke up at 5:30am today to finish it before I started work. This book will stay with me for a while. It is dark, depressing, and tragic. I don't normally picture things in my head while I read - this book, I could feel everything and see everything. I give it 5 stars for the visceral reaction that it got from me. I was not expecting that!

Ellie’s story was horrifying! This book will grab you and stay with you.

This story follows Ellie, 6 years old, as she manages the household and her little brother.

She cares over Sam, her little brother, when she is home from school. Her love for her brother is palpable.

This story is a brutal read! The pacing of this book was so well done! This book kept me curious! As I read, I told myself this be a redemption story. Corinne knows how to carve a book that will stay with you. I could not put it down. I really enjoyed the writing and one wouldn’t know this is a debut novel. The writing is methodical and makes the reader feel as if they are in the story.

“Readers Choice Book Awards Gold Winner, was a deemed a slow burn horror novel about neglect, memory, and what answers when a child needs to be loved.”

This drew me in knowing I was going to be in for devastation.

I too agree with the author’s sentiment about the scariest horror being with a thread of possibility of truth.

Thank you to Netgalley, Permuted Press, and Corinne Westbrook for this eARC in exchange of my honest review.

Corinne Westbrook has written a masterwork of supernatural horror. Where others rely on cheap scares, gore, and shock value to amp up the tension, Corinne goes straight for the mind and the heart. Her world builds itself slowly, methodically—you can almost see where she’s taking you at times, but you’re never quite sure. The characters feel carefully drawn out, with just enough detail to make you think you know them, but with pieces deliberately missing from the puzzle. Every detail matters, and you come to understand the world she’s created through the small things that add up. She carries the story through emotion in a way that feels almost cathartic, and comes from a place of deep understanding and care. There is no slapstick horror to be found here—only deep, creeping emotions that perfectly suit the monsters of this world.

Deeply atmospheric, emotional and dread-inducing horror. Westbrook plotted this so well - for a story where the horrors builds in the empty spaces, the narrative never dragged. Westbrook works masterfully in creating the space between, the lack of things, the stretch of time. I found some phrasing to be repetitive ("the air changed"), and I imagine that the author expects that one of their choices will be highly triggering to some (specifics omitted to avoid spoilers). I would absolutely recommend for a hardy reader, because while the story is disturbing and - of course - very scary, it also is deeply sad and emotional, which is a great accomplishment by the author. I think Ellie will stick with me for a long time. Thank you to NetGalley and Posthill Press for the ARC, and the opportunity to share my honest feedback.

The Hollow One by Corinne Westbrook was in turns creepy and heartbreaking. Ellie has so much heart in her, I know she will stay with me for a long time. Written from the eyes of a child, it really takes on the magic and questioning and longing that children feel. I don't have a lot to say about this book, besides that I loved it. The creature wearing her father's face was horrifying, but so was the real to life horrors that Ellie and Sam faced.

Thank you for Netgalley, Corinne Westbrook and Post Hill Press for the ARC!

Corinne was nice enough to provide me with an advanced copy of "The Hollow One," and I have to say, it is a book that will stay in my memory for a long time. It is both chilling and gut wrenching at times. There are some truly uncomfortable moments in the book which just adds to the creepiness. If you are a fan of Stephen King, Shirley Jackson, or even Richard Matheson, you will definitely want to read this book.

This book pulled me in from the beginning. Corinne's description of characters and scenery made me feel like I was there watching and listening, however terrifying that may be. I was reminded of older Steven King or Dean Kootz stories that sucked the reader in to the end.
Over all it was an incredible story. Full of the horrors of too many families and the super natural intertwined so cleverly.

To be honest I wasnt sure what to expect i went in blindly. I can say this book had a lot of detail so I felt like I was right there in the pages and it felt simple enough that I wasn't lost. There wasnt a moment I felt bored, sometimes wondering whats next. Im a sucker for a happy ending but not every book has one. Overall, I enjoyed it.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. The Hollow One is this book is an eerie exploration of the way grief possesses those it touches. Ellie is a young girl with a brand new baby brother at home. The story starts with Ellie rushing home from school as any child would but the home she returns to each day is anything but idyllic. This story is told perfectly through the eyes and thoughts of a young girl facing unfathomable circumstances.
