Definitely recommend this book for a good summer read, it’s so easy to go through and overall would read more from this author if she writes another YA novel!!

Summers at Big Bear Lake have always meant Andie and Patrick—until she ghosted him after their first kiss last year. Now she returns hoping to fix things, only to find Patrick with a girlfriend. Meanwhile, Tommy arrives freshly dumped. When both are heartbroken, they make an SOS pact—but what happens when you’re both standing on the same cliff?
The moment I saw this story was set in Big Bear Lake, California, it was an immediate add to my TBR—one of the cutest towns I’ve ever visited. Add in the fact that it gives off Better Than the Movies and Beach Read vibes, and I was excited to jump in.
As I dove into the story, those elements definitely came through, but the overall feel was very young. This could be a combination of it being a shorter novel and the pop culture references, which made the tone feel like a slight step up from middle grade, but a step below Lynn Painter’s typical YA feel. I still hesitate to say this is fully appropriate for 13-year-olds, though, because of some of the content warnings listed below.
Overall, it was a very fun time spent at the lake with two heartwarming friends-to-lovers leads. Cute, but likely not super memorable.
I enjoyed the female narrator for Andie, but the male narrator felt way too old for Tommy.

I have been wanting to read Myah Ariel for some time now. This is her debut young adult and I thought it was really cute! At first I wasn't sure if I was going to be into it and with YA books sometimes it's a miss as I am not the demographic. This one started out that way but then half way through it shifted and then I was very invested in Andie and Tommy! I think a lot of teens would be able to relate to these characters and how messy life can be.
I thought Myah was able to convey those teenage feelings really well. Andie was going through her own journey with her parents divorce and Tommy was feeling the pressure from his parents specifically his dad to continue with baseball. I was very happy for Tommy that he was able to stand up to his dad and express how he feels. The way the two connected, although it was driven by heartbreak, just felt like a natural progression over the summer. Even though Andie was pinning after Tommy's brother, it was very clear that the connection was not like how it was with Tommy.
The audiobook was interesting. I really enjoyed Khaya Fraites narration and honestly I would have been okay if she would have done both POVs. And it was not that Raymond J. Lee was bad, but he just didn't sound like a teenage boy. But by the end I was used to his voice and then he was Tommy. The audio was super quick! I started it on a whim towards the end of my work day and had I started it in the beginning, I would have been able to complete it in a day (it is under 6 hours).
If you are looking for a quick YA book that takes place in the summer - give this one a read!

It’s summer time and Andie is back at the lake house with just her mom this summer since her parents got divorced. If that wasn’t hard enough, she’s facing Patrick – her crush. They kissed last summer and then she ghosted him. Patrick’s brother Tommy is supposed to bring his girlfriend Chloe to the lake and at last he will “fit in.” But then Tommy’s girlfriend dumps him and Patrick shows up to the lake with a girlfriend. With Andie and Tommy heartbroken, they decide to be friends and support each other. Does Andie get Patrick back? Does Tommy patch things up with Chloe? Or is there a spark between them?

Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this arc! I really enjoyed this book and how layered it was. Both characters, Tommie and Andie are getting over heartbreak and decide to lean on each other for support. Over time these feelings grow into more. I loved to see how these two grow together and individually. As well as seeing their dynamics with their families. I loved seeing Andie navigate the divorce of her parents and handle those emotions. I also enjoyed the part where Tommie was debating about school and his career. They take the individual stuff they are going through and are able to lean on each other for support. This was a beautifully written YA. Also please give us more details on Andy’s mom’s story I just really need to know where this is going!!!

I would totally recommend! This is the first book I read by this author and I will be reading more of her works!
Andie is so unique and just a young quirky girl! She shows the best parts of being a young teenage girl. Andie is one of the most original characters I have ever read! Now to Tommy! He was not what I was expecting at all! His storyline is very interesting and different than what I thought he was going to be like. All the characters are sweet, kind, and funny!
There were no actual bad parts in this book! There were some moments and dialogue that I felt was very cringey. Besides that this was so much fun to read!
In total, this book was is such a fun summer read! This piece is not spicy at all, which makes it great for the young readers too! I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a new sunshine, happy vibe in a book!

This was so freaking cuteeee!!!
Andie, our main FL, sends a suggestive text to her long-time friend and crush, Patrick, hoping to move their relationship forward after they shared a kiss the previous summer. Only to find out, upon arriving at his home, that not only is he being awkward around her, but he also has a girlfriend—and she's staying at their vacation home. She and her bestie, Mel, try to do damage control by sneaking into his room to delete the text before he sees it, but they're caught in the act by his brother, Tommy.
This was such a fun read. When it was mentioned in the earlier chapters that Tommy, back when he was still the uncool, serious older brother, would stare at Andie until she eventually looked up, only to get annoyed, pack up his stuff, and leave, I was all in! And I am so glad he ended up being the love interest.
The dynamic between the two of them—two heartbroken teenagers leaning on each other to get over their pain, discovering how much they have in common, cheering each other on, and eventually falling in love—ugh, be still my heart. I absolutely loved it.
While I was reading the last chapter, I had taken some medication for a health issue I'm dealing with, and it made me incredibly drowsy. I fought so hard to stay awake to finish it, but when I woke up the next morning, I realized I lost the battle lol. It was totally worth it, though, because I loved re-reading that final chapter anyway.
I really hope and pray we get a book about Andie's mom and Simon. Pleaseeeeeee!!! I want that story so badly.
Also, when I first came across this title—and every other time I saw it—I kept hearing "You jump, I jump" in my head. I couldn't figure out where I'd heard it before, so two days ago I finally gave in and Googled it. Turns out it's from Titanic. Then there's a chapter in the book where the characters reference Rose, Jack, and the movie, and I felt so validated because it definitely wasn't just me thinking it.

You Jump First is an absolutely adorable YA romance and easily one of the cutest young adult love stories I’ve read recently.
One of the book’s greatest strengths is how relatable it feels. While the story centers on teenage characters, the insecurities, fears, and uncertainty they experience are universal and will resonate with readers of all ages. I especially appreciated how Andie’s developing relationship unfolds alongside the challenges within her parents’ marriage. Watching her navigate her own feelings while witnessing changes in her family added emotional depth and authenticity to her character.
I loved the dual POV, which allowed me to connect with both Andie and Tommy and better understand their individual struggles and growth. Tommy’s writing and the story-within-the-story elements were particularly charming and ended up being some of my favorite moments in the book.
Another aspect I appreciated was the portrayal of the parents. As a parent myself, I value stories that show adults making mistakes, taking accountability, and apologizing to their children when appropriate. Those moments felt genuine and meaningful.
My only minor criticism is that I would have liked a bit more resolution for a few story threads, particularly regarding the baseball storyline and some of the family dynamics. However, this is a small complaint and mostly reflects the fact that I wanted to spend more time with these characters.
Overall, You Jump First is a sweet, heartfelt, and engaging YA romance filled with lovable characters, emotional growth, and plenty of charm. Fans of contemporary YA romance will find a lot to enjoy here.

You Jump First is cute, breezy, emotional, and very much for the people who love yearning, awkward crushes, heartbreak healing, and that magical “one unforgettable summer” vibe. It gave me major comfort-read energy.
Andie and Tommy were honestly adorable together. I am forever weak for the “we’re both heartbroken so let’s emotionally spiral together” setup 😭 and the way their friendship slowly turns into something deeper was sweet without feeling overly dramatic.
Things I loved:
☀️ The summer-at-the-lake setting was immaculate
💔 The heartbreak pact setup was genuinely fun
🫶 Tommy being the quiet, misunderstood sweet boy? Inject it into my veins
🌊 The whole book feels light, cozy, and easy to binge

You Jump First is a sweet YA novel about summer at the lake with friends and falling in love. Andie has had a crush on her friend Patrick for years. They kissed last summer, and Andie is anxious to see where they stand. Tommy, Patrick’s older brother, was planning to spend the summer with his girlfriend Chloe before she dumped him unexpectedly. When Patrick shows up for the summer with his girlfriend Bekah in tow, summer in the lake looks much different than Andie expected. Andie and Tommy become friends quickly as they bond over being the only single members of their friend group at the lake house.

On top of that, she’s had a rough year coping with her parent’s divorce. Tommy was planning on spending the summer at the lake with his girlfriend Chloe, but she dumps him right before they are supposed to leave. In order to try and cope and survive a summer in a friend group where they are the only singles, Andie suggests she and Tommy become each other’s support people, and it doesn’t hurt that they are already family friends. Will Tommy be able to help Andie overcome her childhood crush and first summer without her dad at the lake house? Will Andie be able to help Tommy see that he has a lot to offer and that Chloe is missing out?
This was a sweet, summer friends to lovers read, but it lacked depth in plot. You Jump First is Myah’s first YA novel. I’ve read and loved her adult contemporary romances so I was excited to hear she was branching out into YA. This book was absolutely adorable and deserves all the stars! I read it in less than 24 hours. The story is told from both Andie and Tommy’s perspectives. I loved getting to be inside their heads as they navigated their own struggles. The author kept the story lighthearted, heartfelt, and fun! The friendship and slow-building chemistry between Andie and Tommy was so sweet. It was adorable to see all the little things Tommy did for Andie. I also loved how Andie encouraged Tommy’s writing and that we got little glimpses of the story he was working on. Andie and Tommy’s friends added so much fun to the story especially Mel (Andie’s BFF). I appreciated that the pop culture references felt natural rather than overdone. The ending was really satisfying! I’m hoping we could get a book or novella on Andie’s mom’s love story which would be fun to explore! If you love YA summer romances, you should definitely pick this one up!

Every single one of us has had a summer (or long term) crush completely go off the rails before. Andie, our fmc, is the quintessential 16/17 year old and I found her character to be pretty realistic when it comes to navigating crushes at her age. (& lets be honest even my age now lol) She allows herself to be sad about Patrick not being into her anymore and getting a girlfriend but she does her best to get closure and move on. Her best friend Mel is the perfect supporting character for her. Then I also enjoyed her slow friendship with Tommy, Patrick's brother. This too felt really realistic on how a crush can really just hit you out of absolutely nowhere. I liked their mutual pining and the space they allow each other to really be themselves.
You jump first was such a cute summer YA romance. I liked all the characters, the setting, and the message of finding your people that help you grow into the best version of yourself. I would definitely recommend anyone to check this book out if you're in the mood for a cinnamon roll of a romance story.

You jump first was such a cute summer YA romance. I liked all the characters, the setting, and the message of finding your people that help you grow into the best version of yourself. I would definitely recommend anyone to check this book out if you're in the mood for a cinnamon roll of a romance story.

I hate that I missed posting this review prior to release, as planned! An unexpected medical issue made it impossible. However, You Jump First, by Myah Ariel is too cute to forget!
With a diverse cast of characters, the book is a coming of age story that touches on relatable topics such as first heartbreaks, depression and divorce, yet the author does a good job of adding just enough lighthearted moments to keep the story from feeling heavy. It’s a quick read with mostly decent pacing, though I wish there were more pages for Andie and Patrick’s burgeoning feelings to add a bit more tension. I really liked them together, and it was nice to see the characters struggles with their insecurities in ways that reminded me that they’re still young.
Also, Patrick is a doll.
I’m not a fan of spoilers in reviews, but I do recommend this book. I certainly enjoyed it.

Andie and Tommy team up for a summer of having each other’s backs. Andie falling for her friend after they kissed last summer and realize this summer wasn’t going to be the connection she had hoped for. Tommy (brother of said friend) just got broken up with and is trying to get over the heartbreak of that and figure out what he is going to be doing next with his life.
This was such a cute and fun book; absolutely perfect for a summer/beach read. I loved the characters, the friendships, and the romance. The characters helped each other work through their problems and I just really enjoyed them getting to know each before any feelings came up.

I absolutely LOVED Myah’s novel NO ORDINARY LOVE last year so I knew I had to grab her newest! YOU JUMP FIRST is a cute summer YA romance filled with perfect lake vibes.
The whole cast of characters were great and it’s a perfect read for the older teen or young adult in your life! Andie and Tommy’s friends to lovers story arc was so sweet. And I loved the depth of Andie’s parents storyline. (I would love to dive more into this though!) Andie’s best friend, Mel, is a real girls girl and we all should be lucky to have a friend like her.
I’ve been in a major book slump but gobbled this one up in less than 24 hours. It’s a quick, sweet read! And one that will be perfect reading on a beach or a day in the sun!

We've all had a high school crush gone wrong - where you feel one way, but they may not feel the same. This is all of those awkward teen emotions/worries wrapped in a cute friends to lovers romance.
Andie was my favorite; I felt SO bad for her. But I'm glad Tommy helped her get through a miscommunication based on his brother's misdoings. I also enjoyed the male perspective of Tommy juggling feelings for his ex! All those confusing emotions from both Andie & Tommy I felt. Seeing how their relationship unfolds was enjoyable.
One thing that didn't work for me were the pop culture references. One or 2 were spot on for this year, some I understood (but don't think any teen would grasp) and then many that even I had to look up because it was either before my time or something/someone I have never heard of. 😅 I felt like this is a YA book written for adults. Myah Ariel’s You Jump First is a cute young adult romance. The families have returned to the lakeshore houses for the summer.. For Angie, this summer is different. Her parents have divorced since last year. And Patrick, who kissed her last summer, has come with his girlfriend. Angie is struggling to understand all the changes. Enter Patrick’s older brother Tommy. Tommy is also suffering as his girlfriend dumped him via text message. Tommy and Angie tell their story and the reader comes to know each of them as the POV changes each chapter.
There are several funny interactions as the author uses different settings and situations to create a new summer for both. Definitely written for a teenager, You Jump First is a good read for a teen looking for fun and light reading.

I absolutely loved this book! It was short, sweet, and such a fun summer read.
The characters were really compelling, and I loved that there wasn't really any miscommunication going on. The characters were mostly up-front with their feelings and thoughts, and they handled things pretty maturely.
The plot was fun, and the romance was really sweet. My only issue with this book is the cursing. There is a fair bit of cursing (which I get it, the book is about teenagers). Also, I think the texting format kind of bothered me. I don't think teenagers really text like that, but I could be wrong.

This was such a sweet summer read! For this being Myah Ariel"s first venture in the young adult space, she did a fantastic job! Her voice and style felt very authentic to the genre. I was obsessed with Andie and Tommy. Their story was just so sweet to watch unfold. While I love a book where one of the love interests has had this deep seated, years long infatuation with he other love interest, I do love how these two just hadn't thought of each other that way until they really did. Sometimes you really don't notice people until you do! I also adored Mel and Andie's friendship and that their bond was so rock steady. Same goes for Andie's parents, while there was some messiness, I love that her mom was so there for her. Overall, it was such a sweet summer read!

This one was a really light read. Unfortunately, this wasn't necessarily a good thing. It felt like it was missing substance in all aspects to the point where I just wanted more.
I did like the friends-to-lovers aspect and how the relationship played out for the most part. The growth from their re-connection to friendship to romance felt realistic and relatable. I did want some more depth and maybe even some more buildup to the romance, though. I think some plot would have helped as well - it often felt like it was more vibes and hanging out than a real plot.
At the end of the day, this was a clean YA romance that could be quite enjoyable for readers looking for a light read. My thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for allowing me to read this work. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

This was fast, light, fun, relatable, and the summer vibes were definitely there! The setting really shone through and made the book so much more fun. The MC also served the story well and was enjoyable. The romance was easy to root for and be invested in, and this book felt like it was written especially for the Conrad girlies. I did want a little bit more to sink my teeth into, but still, the book was fun. My only other complaint was that Tommy didn't exactly feel like a real boy and the dialogue didn't always sound realistic, but regardless, I had a lot of fun reading this book. It's perfect to scratch the summer reading itch!
