From USA TODAY bestseller Kayla Olson, a new rom-com about a high-maintenance woman who embarks on a wilderness trek to prove to her ex how low-maintenance she can be—only to find herself with no makeup and an extremely attractive trek leader.
Sadie Whitlock has always been praised for being the most prepared person in the room, the one who’s thought of everything—and every backup plan—for any given situation. She knows exactly what she wants, exactly what she loves, and goes to great lengths to make sure her life runs perfectly as planned.
So, when her laidback boyfriend breaks up with her for being “too high-maintenance,” Sadie is eager to prove him wrong, and signs herself up for a weeks-long guided wilderness adventure in the High Sierras of camping, hiking, rappelling, and kayaking. It’s the most miserable, uncomfortable situation she can think of.
Sadie’s a five-star resort girl at heart, but she has a compelling—and suspiciously attractive—tour August Thorn. Thorn lives for adventure and always keeps a professional distance from the trekkers under his care…but there’s just something about Sadie, and for the first time, he finds himself wanting to get closer. As they explore the wilderness together, Sadie realizes the great outdoors might truly be great with the right person.
Kayla Olson lives in Texas, and can usually be found in near proximity to black coffee, the darkest chocolate, Scrivener, and an army of Zebra mildliners.

After being dumped for being “too high maintenance,” Sadie decides to prove she can rough it by joining a group backpacking trip through the Sierras. Except, things don’t go quite as planned — and what starts as a personal challenge turns into something much more complicated when she meets Thorn, the rugged, rule-abiding trip leader who seems to like her exactly as she is.
This book was so much fun — especially if you love the outdoors! Sadie and Thorn’s romance is sweet because he genuinely likes her for who she is, which felt so satisfying after everything she’d been through. And the “no relationships with hikers” rule? Totally believable. Sleeping with a client would be such a real-world mess, so I loved that it added real tension.
That said, my backpacker brain couldn’t ignore a few details — these people needed bear canisters, and the idea that only a few knew what switchbacks were made me laugh. Sadie also should’ve been in way more pain for someone new to backpacking! But beyond that, I had such a good time with this story.
Tropes I loved: 🪵 Forbidden romance 🎒 Opposites attract ⛺️ One bed (tent!)

EEK! I just knew I was going to love this book when the opening author note said this book was for anyone who would 100% go on survivor if not for the whole surviving off the land thing, knows all the words to “a little bit Alexis”, and takes inspiration for the way Elle Woods went to Harvard just approve a point. I really resonated with the main female character Sadie for the way she feels that she is “too much”. She is super prepared, overly organized and likes to have a well structured thought out plan. She likes the comforts of the indoors and would never see herself doing a backpacking trip… it’s hitting close to home. But I loved reading about Sadie‘s transition from day one to day 12 of this trip to find that she is wonderful just the way she is, strong enough to do anything she puts her mind to, & even found love in a super attractive and thoughtful tour guide along the way! I’m super thankful for, ATRIA books, and NET galley, and Kaitlyn Olsen for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to Atria Books and NetGalley for the advance copy of The Great Outdoors by Kayla Olson.
This story follows Sadie, who’s freshly heartbroken after her boyfriend Caden breaks up with her, calling her “high-maintenance” and “too much.” Through a series of revenge type moments Sadie books a 12-day hiking trip in California despite her desperate need for comforts (like coffee and her favourite things) and embarks on the hiking journey to prove to herself that she can do it despite Caden and his opinions and his decisions.
From the moment Sadie meets Thorn, the experienced but quietly guarded trail guide, the story unfolds into something much deeper than a breakup-revenge hike. Olson writes a tender and empowering journey of self-discovery, healing, and unexpected love. Sadie’s growth felt so genuine — from struggling to lighten her pack to saving a fellow hiker and facing her fears head-on, she transforms in such a relatable, inspiring way.
The chemistry between Sadie and Thorn builds slowly and naturally, with so many heartwarming, funny, and occasionally heart-stopping moments.
This book was not just a romance, but a story of self-discovery about finding your strength, your joy, and your place in the world.
The Great Outdoors is uplifting, heartfelt, and full of adventure, reminding us that sometimes feeling lost is exactly how we find ourselves.
** Thanks to Atria Books and Net Galley for the ARC I was provided with in exchange for my honest review. **
I'm a first time Kayla Olson reader, but this will for sure NOT be my last. She knocked it out of the (National) park with this one.
This is the second book I've ever read cover to cover in one sitting. Technically, I've read two cover to cover just this month. Yeah. It's that good.
The story of Sadie sucked me in from the very beginning. The story of proving someone wrong, while proving yourself right at the same time. That one hit home for me. I'm sure it hits close to home for a lot of people.
Then add in Thorn. He is the perfect balance in the story. The complete opposite of Sadie's crappy ex. The inner turmoil Thorn goes through. So selfless. Gah.
I could go on, but that would ruin it. Read this one. You will not be disappointed.
After “The Lodge”, this is the 2nd Kayla Olson book I have had the pleasure of receiving an ARC for. My expectations were high as that was one of my favourite reads, and I was not disappointed with this new book!
Sadie likes what she likes. Comfort, routine, and 5-star resort vacations. At first she sets off on this adventure backpacking in California for a week and a half to prove something to her ex, who told her she wouldn’t make it. As Sadie progresses through the story, she discovers it is for herself. Destabilizing her routine is difficult but necessary in life’s unpredictability.
Thorn is Sadie’s tour guide and knows this hike inside and out. In his own way, he is stuck in his routine and comfortability, despite backpacking as his job.
It is against the rules for the guides to fraternize with the hikers, but Sadie and Thorn gravitate towards each other anyway. One of my favourite scenes is Thorn painting Sadie’s nails in her tent, because of course she brought nail polish. Also one tent ;)
Thank you Netgalley and Atria for sending me this ARC. This is for sure a reread for me when it releases!
Thank you to Kayla Olson, Atria Books, and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I was so glad I got to read this book — I was actually sad when I finished it, because what a great surprise this turned out to be!
I could relate so much to Sadie and her need for predictability, structure, and that sense of comfort that comes from having a plan. I loved following her journey and seeing a FMC who enjoys her little luxuries, but not in a pretentious or annoying way. Her growth, reflections, and ability to adapt and make the best out of unexpected situations really stood out to me.
What impressed me most, though, was how well the author balanced both main characters’ arcs. Often in dual POV stories, one character (usually the FMC) gets more emotional depth, while the other mostly serves the romantic storyline — but that wasn’t the case here. Kayla Olson gave both characters space to grow, face their own challenges, and evolve in meaningful ways, all while building a romance that felt genuine, sweet, and beautifully written.
I also loved the vivid descriptions of nature and setting. The way she brought the Mackenzie Lake Loop trail to life was so immersive that I was ready to pack my bags and go — until I realized it’s fictional! The atmosphere and details were so realistic, it’s hard to believe it’s not a real place.
To say I loved this book is the understatement of the century. 13/10. No notes.
The banter and chemistry between Sadie and Thorn is undeniable! I laughed. I kicked my feet and giggled. I swooned. There’s something special about a love story that doesn’t involve a bunch of drama and is just easy going and sweet and cute.
I love the depth that we got from BOTH of the main characters. Usually a dual POV favors one or the other, but we got good, deep perspectives from both the FMC and MMC. I loved seeing the sacrifice, struggle and growth from both of them.
Especially Sadie. A girl on a mission to prove others wrong, but discovers herself and proves to HERSELF that she is stronger and more capable than she thinks.
I loved the outdoorsy adventures and all the supporting characters that allowed this book to be so much more than just a little romance story. Great side plots and storytelling.
Overall, just a beautiful story & I will be telling everyone I know to read it once it is released.
The Great Outdoors is such a sweet and fun read. Olson’s writing style is straightforward and easy to follow. The Great Outdoors was had a great sense of place that kept you well- oriented while the characters were constantly moving. Additionally, there were several high movement situations that were clear and easy to understand, I never had to re-read a paragraph to understand how someone suddenly got hurt.
The cover was what hooked me onto this book and I tried to go in as blind as I could.. After the first few chapters, I was wary of a high-maintenance-girl-off-on-a-precarious-hiking-adventure, and that this might feel overdone. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find the emotional journey did feel like a worthwhile take on self-discovery.
I really enjoyed the main characters of Sadie and Thorn. Olson does a good job showing you not telling you how the FMC and MMC fall for each other. The side characters and, in particular, Thorn’s conflict with his co-leader, add a lot of emotional variety.
This book is for fans of an opposites attract, strangers to lovers, with very normal relationship roadblocks kind of romance.
Sometimes you just want two great people to find each other and work out their conflict with tender, loving care while also having some rock face rappelling mishaps, you know??

If you liked Happiness for Beginners by Katherine Center, then you'll love The Great Outdoors: a type a woman who's coming to grips with the loss of a major relationship finds herself after abandoning her personal status quo by going on a backpacking trip, where she falls in love both with the new version of herself as well as a ruggedly handsome outdoorsman. Like Katherine Center's novels, The Great Outdoors is a clean romance, which was a refreshing change of pace for someone like me who could do without spice.
I loved Sadie's resilience throughout the novel, despite her literally being out of her element, and the way she came to understand herself as being just right when you're with the people who are meant to be around you. She made the best of the situation, despite being a little (or a lot) naive about what a two-week hiking excursion would entail, and she came out the other end a more whole version of herself because of it. I loved getting to see Sadie's growth and it inspires me to view myself differently, too, as a person who has been told they are too little or too much most of their life.
Thorn (I wish we had called him August instead of by his surname because why would you give him the beautiful name of my birth month only to discard it like three chapters in?) annoyed me at some points but that's because he was written like he is (read: a man) and had his flaws just like everyone else, but he loved Sadie for exactly who she was and it was so sweet to read their falling for each other.
Def recommend The Great Outdoors for anyone looking for a tender, wholesome, and spice-free love story.
Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for providing me with this ARC!
Sadie Whitlock is too much. She overthinks, over packs, and is far too high maintenance for her (now) ex-boyfriend, Caden O’Connor. When she signs up for a two week hike through the Californian wilderness, she knows it certainly won’t change her life; it will only prove her ex wrong.
Right?
Enter one August Thorn, her trek guide, whose own life is about to be wholly upturned by this type A novice who packed sneakers for a hike through rugged terrain and a whole coffee setup for her caffeine fix.
Will either of them actually make it through the trip unscathed? (Spoiler alert: No. No they won’t.)
I’m such sucker for the “finding your person” love story so this was such a lovely read! Both Sadie and Thorn are well-rounded and interesting leads who play off each other well. Their magnetic attraction steeped early on in flirty banter and friendly teasing had me hooked. But their eventual relationship built on deep understanding and trust held all of my focus.
This is my first time reading Kayla Olson’s work, and I have to say I’m definitely a fan now. The combination of both journaling and (occasionally) vlogging within the text flowed perfectly. It never felt stilted or out of place. And the alternating points of view worked so well. Sometimes we’d get clarity for something one person did in the other’s following chapter.
The setting itself is also magnificent. I never realized I needed a novel set in the wilds of Northern California, though I will admit there were times when I wished we saw more of the day to day experiences of the hike. Like how did Sadie handle the initial change from indoor plumbing to roughing it on the side of a trail. Or how did mealtime actually happen at their campsites? Perhaps a bit basic and dull, but it would’ve added just a hint of reality.
Another minor miss for me lies with the supporting cast. I know this is a romance and we’re meant to focus on the main couple. But the other characters tended to lack depth, even Sadie’s best friend and the bickering engaged couple. They’re all sort of there existing until they become a plot device for convenience.
This is definitely a romcom for all of us who have ever felt like they were too much for everyone else. Highly recommend if you’re looking for something that takes a break from big city realness!
After Sadie gets unceremoniously dumped—for being “too much” by her shallow boyfriend—she signs up for the nature hike (which is totally unlike her self-admittedly high-maintenance self) that he mocked her for being interested in, but then finds out weeks later that he “missed the deadline” for signing up. Her ex’s taunting her with the possibility of death is like fuel that ignites her fire, and Sadie becomes more determined to hike through mountainous countryside than ever. On her first day in California, she encounters her outdoorsy hiking guide named Thorn, and as they hike across rugged terrain with an eclectic cast of characters, his icy shell begins melting; simultaneously, Sadie starts to lose interest in her materialistic life in Texas and wonders if nature really isn’t her thing, or if her newfound love for adventure has more to do with the man leading her on the hiking trails.
Unfortunately, Thorn’s coleader and former best friend (stealing a guy’s girlfriend and running to Peru can put a damper on relationships), Matty, is more focused on himself and how he believes the world has wronged him, so—even though their trek through the wilderness starts great—things turn angsty and dangerous rather quickly. Mix in a messy, engaged couple with Matty’s lack of consideration, and you have the perfect storm—and this cute, funny, and, at times, devastating novel with an ending that’s just the icing on the cake.
In The Great Outdoors, Kayla Olson interweaves vlog posts, journal entries, and seemingly nonfiction passages into a humorous, intriguing narrative—told in the first-person from the point of view of both main characters—that is full of reverie reflecting on themes such as self-growth, development, and the need to prioritize self. Furthermore, she expertly combines tropes, including forbidden love, only one tent, and grumpy and sunshine. Needless to say, I highly recommend this five-star, closed-door Romance to anyone searching for a summer escape—filled with appealing imagery describing the Californian wilderness—and a light, but sometimes tense (in more ways than one 🌶️) read. Thank you, Netgalley, Kayla Olson, and Atria Books, for the opportunity to read this ARC and leave an honest review.
Oh my goodness, The Great Outdoors by Kayla Olson was such a pleasant surprise! I read it expecting something light and funny, but it ended up being so much more than that. It’s charming, hilarious, and honestly just filled with so much heart.
Sadie was such a delight to follow! She is high maintenance, self-aware, but also determined as hell to prove everyone (especially her ex) wrong. Watching her go from not being able to survive without lattes and the internet to literally conquering living outdoors for weeks was so satisfying. Her character growth was written perfectly. She found her confidence, her strength, and her joy again, and I was seriously so proud of her by the end.
And Thorn! I loved the slow burn between him and Sadie. At first, he’s all unimpressed and judging her for showing up to a two week hike without hiking boots (I was crying laughing at that scene), but then he slowly starts to see how capable and fierce she really is. Their chemistry was so natural and fun and felt like a perfect balance of flirty tension and mutual respect.
The setting was stunning too. I felt like I was right there with them and the way Kayla Olson described the landscapes made me want to go hiking immediately (and I am not a hiking girl). The vlogging and journaling touches added such a personal, modern feel to the story, and I loved getting those extra glimpses into Sadie’s mindset.
There’s definitely a good amount of drama, but in more in the needing to know what happens next kind of way. I was hooked on everyone’s story, not just Sadie and Thorn’s. And while it’s light on spice, it doesn’t need it and the emotional connection and humor totally carry it.
All in all, this was just a feel good, fun read that made me smile the whole way through. I loved Sadie’s journey of rediscovering herself, laughing through chaos, and realizing she is capable of way more than she ever thought. If you love sweet rom coms with heart and humor, this book absolutely delivers!
Thank you to NetGalley, Kayla Olson, and Atria Books for the eARC of this book.
Can Kayla Olson write a bad book? Because she’s on fire with her sweet romance novels!
In this book we follow Sadie and Thorn. Sadie was recently dumped because her ex says she is too high maintenance. To prove him wrong, she signs up for a 12-day hiking adventure that the ex was also supposed to be on. Well, he ditched and now Sadie is with a group of strangers trying to embrace the wilderness. Thorn is the lead hiking instructor in charge of keeping everyone safe. He takes a liking to Sadie, because she is not what she appears. Together, Thorn helps Sadie embrace a different version of herself.
I loved this story. I had it on my kindle forever, and I want to kick myself for not reading it sooner! The depth of the characters really has you locked in from the first chapter.
Sadie is a character you want to cheer for. She is so hopeful and positive with every experience. I loved that she learned on her own how to give up certain things (like her coffee maker and expensive clothing that isn’t practical) without having to be ridiculed or told so. She has tremendous character growth. I also enjoyed how she wasn’t a high maintenance, spoiled girl. She just had a crappy boyfriend who made her think that way. She is strong and resilient.
Thorn was perfect. He has a kind heart and cares about everyone, even his ex best friend who ran off with his ex girlfriend. Takes a true man to forgive someone for that. At the start of the novel he is truly infatuated with Sadie, but his goal is to help her grow and embrace the experience. He accomplishes this, and then dives into his true feelings. I loved him start to finish.
This is a cute, sweet, closed door romance novel. I don’t even miss the spice because the chemistry and real-life connection will have you locked on the story. I enjoyed every moment and cannot wait to read Olson’s next novel!
*An ARC was received in exchange for an honest review.
When I first opened the book and read the first few paragraphs, I didn’t think I was going to like the FMC at all, so I was a bit nervous about maybe not liking the book. But she was not as I expected. I love this character!
Sadie is a high maintenance woman. Her boyfriend breaks up with her because she can’t be more spontaneous and live more freely. They were planning an elaborate trip to Italy, but instead he has decided he is going on a wilderness trek instead. To prove to him how low maintenance she can be, Sadie decides to sign up for the trek on her own.
I loved this book. It is funny. It is sweet. It has yearning and tension. It is a journey of self-discovery and of friendship.
Sadie knows what she likes and knows what she needs to be comfortable. I love how self aware she is. Her high maintenance is really just knowing what brings her pleasure. Whats’s wrong with that? Except when you want to pack your entire apartment for a 12-day wilderness trek!
She may be a little excessive but that is the fun of this story. Watching not only her grow and understand what she really needs but also how others change their mind about her.
Thorn is perfect! He is just the person you would want to lead this expedition. Kind, caring and concerned for all involved, wanting to open them up to the possibilities and beauty around them.
The chemistry between Sadie and Thorn is there from the start. They become friends first and then something more. I enjoyed how they each opened up a different part of themselves through knowing the other person. The banter between the two was witty and fresh.
I laughed. I cried. My heart ached, broke and was put back together.
Don’t miss this book once it comes out in 2026.
Thank you to NetGalley, Kayla Olson and Atria Books for the advanced copy of this book.
The way the author introduced the book at the beginning was so fun and really got me excited to read this story. The main character, Sadie, gave me major Libra vibes, which helped me connect with her. She’s stronger than she realizes, kind, loves to be prepared, and is determined to finish what she started. I think her character could’ve easily been written as annoying or unlikable, but I actually really enjoyed her, and you could feel the warmth she brought to the story. I appreciated her positive attitude, even during uncomfortable moments.
What would’ve made this a higher rating for me is more character depth. You get a sense of who the characters are, but they also feel a bit one-dimensional; the male outdoor enthusiast and the “high-maintenance” female. It would’ve been nice to explore their individual backgrounds and motivations more fully to have a deeper connection to the characters. This lack of depth also made it hard to feel much chemistry between the two main characters; it felt more like a beautiful companionship than a romance, which is still nice, but left me wanting more. We also hear a lot about the male lead’s dad, but it’s never fully explained. I wish the two main characters maybe were more engaged with each other when they did have deeper heart-to-heart conversations, which would’ve added a lot more depth for me.
The story also felt a bit rushed at times, and I often felt like we were told the outcome in a sentence or two rather than being fully immersed in the journey. I honestly didn’t mind it too much, but it was noticeable.
Overall, it was a really fun and easy read, and I really appreciated the absence of overwhelming "spice"—sometimes, it’s just nice to enjoy a straightforward, light, feel-good story.
ARC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Kayla Olson is a wonderful romance author, so I was excited to see that she has another book coming out! "The Great Outdoors" has a somewhat familiar storyline but is written with more complexity than other similar books. Sadie has always prided herself in being the most organized and prepared person for every situation but wasn't prepared for her longtime boyfriend to complain about how she can't ever be spontaneous or low-maintenance. When he starts talking about a camping/wilderness experience and how he knows she would never do something like that, Sadie signs herself up for one. Even after they break up, she decides to move forward with her new spontaneous lifestyle and is determined to prove him wrong. However, the very first day of Sadie's two-week outdoor camping adventure, she knows that she is not at all prepared for this experience. With the help and encouragement of the adventure guide, Thorn, Sadie tackles every obstacle in her way and discovers that she's stronger than she ever imagined. And her newly-formed friendship with Thorn is beginning to develop into something much deeper and more healing to her soul. But what will happen with that relationship when her wildlife adventure is over?
I really enjoyed this book, and especially loved that it was focused more on Sadie's inner strength and her new-founded confidence. My only complaint is how quickly the book wrapped up, as I would have enjoyed reading more about Sadie and Thorn's relationship after the outdoor adventure. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
I am so incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have received an advanced copy of The Great Outdoors from the author and Atria Books! 🫶
The Great Outdoors is everything to me and I am truly so grateful that this book came into my life when it did because I needed it more than words can express! 🥹🩷 It brought me such comfort and it felt like this book was giving me a giant hug that I so desperately needed! 🫶
As soon as I read the dedication about this book being for the overpackers and going on survivor if sleeping outdoors weren’t a thing I knew this book was for me! 🥰❤️ I am a major overpacker just like Sadie when I travel anywhere so I related to her on so many levels and I loved her so much. Sadie gives me so many Elle Woods vibes from Legally Blonde and of course that makes me love her more. She’s determined, courageous, and I wanted to give her the biggest hug when she decided to go on the 12 day hiking adventure just to spite her ex-boyfriend since he thought she wouldn’t even get past day 1 of it. It’s completely outside of Sadie’s comfort zone and I love how vulnerable and how she always stays true to herself! 🫶 Thorn on the other hand is one of the hiking guides and he is the complete opposite of Sadie. I truly love how much he helps her with this journey and how sweet and support he is. The chemistry between Sadie and Thorn is *chef’s kiss* 👩🍳💋 and I couldn’t get enough of it!🤭🔥
If you love romance books, hiking, opposites attract, slow burn, forced proximity, and a book that is honestly the cutest then this is the book for you! 🫶
What an utter delight of a romance novel! This is a sweet, slow-burn romance that doesn’t skimp on the emotions. I always love a good “fish out of water” story, especially when it involves a high-maintenance FMC meeting an outdoorsy MMC during a wilderness challenge, and this book delivers those beloved tropes beautifully.
The author plants the seeds of romance in the reader’s mind early on and allows those seeds to grow gradually (well, it feels gradual while reading, though the entire trip is just twelve days). After Sadie is unceremoniously dumped by the man she thought she’d marry, a man who constantly criticized her for being overprepared and unwilling to go with the flow, she joins a hiking trek, determined to prove him wrong.
Thorn, her hiking guide, knows Sadie’s type. Yet he approaches Sadie’s preparedness (which often ironically means being woefully unprepared) with patience and kindness, not judgment, and helps her to explore entirely outside her comfort zone. He doesn’t expect that she might push him outside his own comfort zone as well.
I loved the descriptions of the group’s outdoor adventures, the beauty of the trails and lakes, and the unmistakable pull between Sadie and Thorn. If you’re looking for a perfect outdoorsy, non-spicy (yet still deeply romantic), feel-good romance, this is it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for the early review copy of this book!
Ohhhhh this book undid me. I LOVED IT! Sadie is a high maintenance girlie who is broken up with my a weak excuse of a man who tells her she is too much. To prove him wrong she signs up for a 2 week hiking/backpacking excursion in the woods of California and hopes to be there with him to prove him wrong. After she finds out that he never signed up for the trip, she decides to stay and tough it out to show it what she's made of by posting it on social media. She meets hiking guide August Thorn (called Thorn), he proves that he literally doesn't care what she does/where she's from/ or how high maintenance she is...she's just got to suck it up and hike. It doesnt take long for him to realize that she is insanely kind, sharing, caring, and has a beautiful heart that shows she so much stronger than she gives herself credit for. He grows on her too and these two become the ANTHEM ( in my head) for "if he wanted to he would!" I love them both so much. The way he coaxes strength out of her, does not step in the "rescue" her when things get hard but just encourages her to dig deeper, cares for the people around him, and genuinely wants her best for HER is so refreshing and BEAUTIFUL. She doesn't have to choose herself or a man...he chooses her for her...and for him to. I could read it a dozen times and still feel the butterflies and excitement just like the first time and I cant wait to share it with all my book loving friends!

This was the first book I've read by Kayla Olson. I'll definitely be picking up others by her! I can genuinely say, I did not want to put this book down. I loved the chemistry between Sadie and Thorn and the way the progression of their relationship felt natural. One of my favorite parts was getting to read Sadie and Thorn's journal entries throughout the trek.
This is one of the few books I've read where I felt connected to so many characters. I loved that Sadie went outside (literally) her comfort zone and did something that scared her. Thorn and his relationship with his Dad and flashbacks of their adventures was so sweet. All I have to say about Abby is, everyone deserves a friend like her. I also really enjoyed hearing about the other people in the group throughout the trip. Maybe if I speak it into existence we can get another book that expands on Matteo's next adventure or even more about what Zoe decided to do next.
The descriptions of the scenery throughout the hike was on point. I especially appreciated the stargazing scenes. It's one of my dreams to go somewhere remote and camp under the stars.
Highly recommend picking this book up! I think my official rating is a 4.5/5. I really think this could have been a 5 star read for me if the ending wasn't so rushed. I could have used more details about how it went from the trip ending to the happily ever after.
A huge thank you to Atria Books and NetGalley for sending me an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Let me start by saying this was such a good fish out of water story. Sadie is a sensitive over planner that enjoys the good and luxurious things in life. After a bad break-up due to being perceived as high-maintenance she treks into the wilderness to prove not only to those that don't believe in her but to herself that she is more than just a pampered princess. This is when she meets Thorne, a wilderness loving hiking guide that has lived his life on the trails. Opposites attract and Thorne struggles to keep his professionalism while showing Sadie that she is capable of anything if she tries. The writing in this book is very easy to read and flows well. The plot moves at a great pace keeping you reading. The descriptions of the scenery really bring you into the scenes and make it easy to paint a picture in your mind. The love scenes are not at all graphic and don't go to far. So don't expect spice, but it's such a nice story that it doesn't really need it to keep you hooked. The only thing I found unrealistic was some of the expensive things that happen at the end of the book as it's hard to believe given the jobs of the FMC and MMC that they would be able to afford it even if they saved every penny. But overall I would definitely recommend this to any fan of contemporary romance.
Okay, so The Great Outdoors by Kayla Olson totally surprised me in the best way. I’ve been on a bit of a romance binge lately, and this one instantly pulled me in. It’s funny, warm, and such a good reminder that stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to the best kind of chaos.
The main character is this relatable woman who does not love nature but somehow ends up on a huge camping trip in the Sierras. As someone who once volunteered to camp with my Girl Scouts and ended up with a wolf spider crawling on my head, I felt her pain. She’s hilarious and self-aware, and I loved watching her navigate all the awkward, messy, heartwarming moments that come with trying something new.
The pacing kept me hooked the entire way through, and the banter between her and the male lead was the perfect mix of flirty and funny. His last name is Thorn, and yes, he’s a hiking leader, which made me laugh — but it works. The story balances humor with some real emotional notes about rejection, approval, and learning who actually deserves your energy.
It’s charming, it’s satisfying, and it left me smiling. If you love grumpy-sunshine romances, quick pacing, and characters who feel like people you actually know, you’ll have a great time with this one.
Thank you to NetGalley, Kayla Olson, and Atria Books for the advance copy.
** ARC Review ** The Great Outdoors is a breath of fresh air and a truly delightful romantic comedy that delivers on every promise. This book is perfect for anyone who loves a fun, character-driven story with plenty of heart and a "grumpy-sunshine" dynamic.
The characters are what really make this story shine. Sadie Whitlock is a high-maintenance, resort-loving character who embarks on a rugged wilderness adventure to prove a point to her ex, leading to some truly hilarious and heartwarming moments. Her journey of self-discovery and learning to appreciate her own worth, messy parts and all, is so relatable and beautifully executed. Then there's August Thorn, the stoic and serious hiking guide who gets far more than he bargained for with Sadie. Their banter is absolutely top-tier and their slow-burn romance is simply perfection.
Olson masterfully balances laugh-out-loud moments with genuine emotional depth. The story has a fast pace that keeps you hooked from start to finish. Set against the stunning backdrop of the High Sierras, the wilderness setting adds another layer of charm to Sadie and Thorn's story. I cannot recommend The Great Outdoors enough. If you're in the mood for an escapist romance that will leave you smiling long after you finish, add this one to your TBR list immediately.
Thank you Kayla, Netgalley, and Atiria Books for the ARC of The Great Outdoors in exchange for my honest review.
The Great Outdoors is the perfect adventure read that’s way more than just a romance. Sadie is post breakup. Feeling down on herself for being labeled "too high maintenance," she decides to take a 12-day backpacking trip into the Sierras to prove to everyone that she's not above spending time in nature. What starts as a revenge hike quickly turns into a journey of self-empowerment. Overall, the book is uplifting, and just so much fun, especially if you're into the outdoors. The overall message shows readers that sometimes feeling lost is exactly how you find your inner-strength and joy.
The chemistry between Sadie and Thorn, is a gradual slow-burn type of deal. Thorn is the perfect guarded, type-a love interest. Which made for one of my favorite tropes, forbidden romance. You know, "no relationships with hikers" kind of thing. What makes their connection so satisfying is that Thorn genuinely likes Sadie for who she is, and helps her love herself the same way. Watching Sadie's personal growth felt incredibly relatable, too. She transforms from struggling to do life to facing her fears head-on and truly finding her place in the world.
This book was such a quick enjoyable read filled with love, adventure, and self-discovery.
Every now and then, you come across a book you simply can’t put down. The kind that has you sneaking in pages every spare moment. That was The Great Outdoors for me. (Thanks, NetGalley!)
After being blindsided by a breakup, Sadie signs up for a wilderness trek that includes everything her ex claimed she couldn’t handle. Determined to prove him wrong and, more importantly, to prove something to herself, she faces two weeks in nature full of challenges, surprises, and self-discovery. Along the way, she learns to embrace her overprepared tendencies, let go of her need for all of life’s comforts, and find joy in the unpredictable.
What Sadie didn’t expect was Thorn, the ruggedly handsome wilderness guide who pushes her out of her comfort zone and is there for her every step of the way. Their chemistry is undeniable, but so are the obstacles between them.
The emotional journey Sadie and Thorn share throughout the trek was beautifully written. I could feel their growing attraction, the tension of Thorn’s inner conflict between responsibility and allowing himself to get close to someone, and the bittersweet emotions when their adventure reached its end. The story struck a perfect balance between heart, humor, and yearning, leaving me with that satisfied, content sigh you get after finishing a truly good romance.
What a delightful, sweet and meaningful story! It's so much more than a romance, it's a story of self discovery and overcoming one's weaknesses. Sadie is such an amazing heroine, even though her motivation for going on the hike had to do with proving her ex wrong, it turned around and became so much more, proving to herself how strong she was and how she can do it for herself. Her self discovery and character development was so well written.
Sadie and Thorn had such a sweet relationship. At first I thought things were progressing too fast between them for my liking, but considering the forced proximity and what they're going through, it was believable. Their chemistry was really good. The way they could tease each other and rile each other up was fun, as well as the more serious moments and the way they got each other.
I also loved Thorn's story and perspective, too. His relationship with Matteo was just as compelling for me as the rest.
There were a few times I thought the pacing was off, at times fast, at times too slow, but all in all this was such a sweet book and I'm so glad I got the opportunity to read it!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC!
After being broken up with for being too high-maintenance, Sadie decides to join her ex-boyfriend in a 12 day nature trek to prove him wrong. When her ex backs out of the excursion, Sadie decides to go anyway.
Once Sadie meets her attractive trek guide, Thorn, she is even more determined to prove she is capable of spending 2 weeks in nature. While navigating through the challenges of camping, hiking, and other outdoor activities, Sadie and Thorn grow closer and must then start navigating their feelings for each other.
This was a beautifully tender and light-hearted story of self-discovery and bravery. Both characters showed a natural growth over the course of the story that felt very real.
I appreciated that Thorn had his own conflict to work through instead of just being responsible for Sadie’s character growth. I also enjoyed that Sadie’s experience didn’t fundamentally change her identity but instead allowed her to grow and add to who she was.
As someone who loves spending time outdoors, I really enjoyed the setting and how the author portrayed how healing it can be to spend time in nature and step out of your comfort zone. All of the side characters were also so fun and added a quirky layer to the story.
The Great Outdoors releases June 16, 2026.
