Misfit Mansion #2

Mayhem at Misfit Mansion

Rate this book
A monster girl and her mythical housemates work together with their human friends to save the town from an unexpected new threat in this delightful spooky and sweet graphic novel companion to Misfit Mansion.

Iris and her housemates can’t wait to host a haunted house party for the people of Dead End Springs! Iris is desperate to connect with Larkspur, the reclusive new addition to their home of misfit monsters. She hopes that by bringing a part of the harvest festival to the house, Larkspur might finally open up—to her and to the humans he so fiercely mistrusts.

But Iris quickly learns that relationships can be complicated. Not only is Larkspur cold towards just about everyone, but their new human friend Mathias is struggling to get along with the other townspeople. Even Iris’s closest friendships feel as if they’re growing weak, and she worries she could lose Agnes and Kel forever if nothing is done.

When a rare horror called a pied piper parrot arrives at the house in search of her missing friend, Iris takes it upon herself to help, dragging a grumpy Larkspur with her. Faced with horrors beyond her imagination, can Iris keep her family safe? Or will she lose everything and everyone dear to her?

It was a pleasant surprise to find out that there was going to be a second book with these characters. The art is absolutely incredible and it’s adorable. I love the characters as well. Personally I prefer the first book to this but this one was still super cute!

Thank you to Net Galley and Simon and Schuster Children's Publishing for helping me get a few "mom points" out of this eARC!

My son is ten years old and from the moment of finishing Misfit Mansion he was asking constantly when the next book was coming out. I'm relatively new to NetGalley - but let me tell you - I was checking constantly to see if this would be uploaded.

Misfit Mansion is easily my son's favorite graphic novel - having read it several times over, taken it to school, had his friends read it, and they even did short acted out films of the characters.

My son went through this sequel in one sitting. The story takes place two years after the first with the introduction of a new character who causes the titled Mayhem. He enjoyed the characters dynamics and how even though they are not human, how they handle their very relatable life experiences. The art is so fun and bright - keeps everyone engaged. My son says that even though the book title suggests otherwise, he finds these calm and relaxing to get through.

Even though my son says that he prefers the first book to the second, he hopes that there will one day be a third book to the series.

Mayhem at Misfit Mansion is a magical, fun, fantasy world. Me and my siblings enjoyed it a lot and wished we could meet some of the characters in person! The book starts two years after the first book where we find the characters are all busy doing their own thing until a nice new character shows up and throws the mansion into mayhem. The drawings are really cute and funny and the characters' reactions to situations match the moment. The Horrors in both books are awesome and unique with their own traits and powers. In this sequel we also learn more about how dreamons work. Even though the main character isn’t human she still goes through some relatable human problems that teach the audience the importance of being honest about your emotions with others. All of Kay Davault's books are a nice little break from reality. They remind me of my favorite show The Owl House, and I feel like the characters from the book would use the phrase, “ Us weirdos have to stick together.”

Thank you so much for this ARC that we got through an author giveaway! My son loves all of Kay Davault's work and was very excited to read this novel. The review is in his words:

I loved the book. Only part I didn't like was that Larkspur said the number song was dangerous to dreamons but they never explained how. I liked the new bird characters and would recommend it to friends. I want to read book 3 now.

My daughter and I have enjoyed reading Kay Davault’s books for a while now. Our first one being Star Knights. When we saw there was going to be a follow up to Misfit Mansion, we were eager to receive an ARC through NetGalley. We loved all the new characters, especially the birds, the pied piper parents. We are hopeful for another book for the series to continue Iris’s adventures with the horrors. Will definitely be buying a copy on release day for our home library.
