In the fog–drenched marshes of Tidehaven, a burnt-out scientist and a guarded ex–Navy SEAL must navigate deadly secrets and slow–burn desire, where falling in love might be the riskiest choice of all.
Emery Caldwell needs a change.
After seven years of teaching marine biology, having grant after grant denied, and growing tired of her mediocre relationship, she’s burnt out. When a sabbatical offers the chance to reset, Emery heads south to the quiet fishing village of Tidehaven, South Carolina, hoping to gather research for a new journal article—and maybe find the direction her life desperately needs.
Reid Morgan has fought hard for peace.
After leaving the Navy SEALs behind, he’s built a quiet life working at the Driftwood Marina, where the days are predictable, and the past feels farther away. The last thing he wants is trouble, or the curious, determined scientist who stirs up things better left buried.
But when Emery witnesses something she shouldn’t in the fog–thick marshes, suddenly both of their lives are in danger. As a deadly threat stalks Emery, Reid steps in to protect her—but getting close means letting her break down all the barriers he’s worked so hard to build.
As danger grows, so does their unexpected connection. But facing the truth—and each other—may be the biggest risk of all.
Linny Mack grew up a voracious reader and writer. She spent her days of adolescence up in her room writing her own stories, cutting her characters out of the Delia’s catalog, and then forcing her family to listen to her read them aloud. Now, Linny is a debut author of contemporary romance. When she isn’t writing your next book boyfriend, she is spending time with her real-life romantic hero and their three children in New Jersey.
Put whatever you're reading down and add this to your TBR list immediately! I haven't read a suspense ARC yet and this one was IT! Linny Mack is an incredible author and had me on the edge of my Kindle the whole time. Think Where the Crawdads Sing and the first few episodes of the TV show, The Outerbanks! I immediately connected with the storyline being a science nerd myself as we dive into a story of the decline of sea turtles in a small marsh town. Taking place in South Carolina, a researcher named Emery is about to start her sabbatical. But it's not an ordinary one. She's finishing where a former one disappeared and was found dead. The quant town of Tidehaven is on edge at what happened and definitely aren't quick to accept a newbie. Enter Reid, a former SEAL. He's cautious to help Emery restart the research project but he falls hard and fast. Together, they witness some pretty sketchy interactions in town, a murder, survive a hurricane and uncover wayyyyyy more than they were expecting in just a few months of Emery's arrival. There's more than wild life beneath the still waters of the marsh town and you're going to want to find out!
Wow! Emery and Reid hold a special place in my heart. This story is full of twists and turns and edge of your seat moments, plus a little bit of spice. This story starts out with a bang (literally 🔫) and just doesn’t stop. We have stalking, 💀 body and a town that has its own deadly secrets.
We meet Reid, broody (and I mean so broody), ex navy seal who is so down bad for his girl. Reid was a golden retriever hiding behind a scowl. Emery, Marine Biologist, who up roots her life in hopes to figure out what she needs for herself. Emery was fierce to be reckoned with even with all the things that were thrown at her. The chemistry between Emery and Reid was electric the moment they saw each other. Though it took them time to get there when they finally did it was just had me kicking my feet and squealing. The mystery had me gripped the entire time and that twist? I can’t wait to read the rest of the series! It’s going to come together so well!
Overall if you love romantic suspense with an interconnected story, deadly secrets, broody mmc, touch her and 💀 then I highly recommend this series!
I went into Beneath Still Waters by Linny Mack expecting a coastal romance, but what I got was something much more, a story wrapped in tension, quiet uneasiness, and secrets that never quite let you relax.
From the first chapter, there’s an underlying sense that something isn’t right, and that feeling follows you through the entire read. The atmosphere is heavy in the best way: suspense simmering beneath calm waters, emotional walls slowly cracking, and danger always lurking just out of sight.
The characters really carried this story for me. The grumpy ex–Navy SEAL hero is exactly the kind of guarded, battle-worn character I love, tough on the outside but clearly carrying more than he says. Pairing him with a marine biologist desperate for a fresh start was perfect. She isn’t just escaping her past; she’s trying to rebuild herself, and watching their connection develop was incredibly satisfying.
This is definitely a slow burn, both romantically and in the suspense plot. The pacing allows the tension to build naturally, and the deadly secrets woven throughout kept me turning pages because I needed to know how everything would unravel.
And that ending? Absolutely worth the journey. It delivered emotionally and left me excited rather than frustrated — the kind of finale that makes you immediately want the next installment.
I’m already counting down to the next book in the Tide Haven series, especially Whispers in the Dunes. If it continues the same atmosphere, character depth, and creeping suspense, this series is going to be a favorite.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Moody, suspenseful, and quietly addictive.
Thank you to the author Linny Mack for this eARC. Beneath Still Waters is my first romantic suspense story and I believe you’ve converted me to a lifelong fan.
The novel follows Emery, a 35 year old, marine biologist who is sick of teaching college students and just wants to do what she loves— research. She arrives to a small fishing town to run a research program for 6 months but quickly uncovers a mystery that results in her life being endangered (literally). Poor Emery only wanted to research turtles! Don’t worry though because she meets Reid, a former Navy SEAL, who works the marina and becomes her bodyguard. Romance quickly finds them as they navigate this small towns hidden secrets.
This novel has it ALL. I am talking grumpy x sunshine, small town drama, drug conspiracies, 💀 bodies, love at first sight, and so much more. I was captured in the first few pages trying to figure out this mystery. By the end I was itching to know more and flipped through the remaining chapters with ease.
The author wrote this in first person, and it really allows you to immerse yourself in emotional experiences of these characters. The writing is simple and easy to follow along, but still very much so atmospheric. I did notice some inconsistencies in the continuity of the story as I read through. Nothing too jarring and will likely be fixed in final edits before publishing, but enough so that I wanted to mention it. Some scenes lacked believability for me because of it, but it didn’t dampen my love of the overall plot. If you read my notes you’d know I was flabbergasted with the reveal at the end! Lowkey excited for Tate’s book and wondering if a certain agent will be his love interest 👀.
You should know that this is a series of 3 books each following different characters. Therefore, the mystery bleeds into the next book leaving some questions unanswered. I didn’t mind that at all and will definitely be reading the next book. Know that going in because not everything will wrapped up in a neat little bow (which I lowkey love).
Lastly, I think my favorite part of this book was witnessing Emery and Reid’s love story 🥹. It’s a true testament of, “when you know, you know.” I am not going to lie I am more of a slow burn lover and this is not that. I didn’t mind that though and found it to be a refreshing change. I’ll be thinking of these two living happily ever after (hopefully) for a long time to come.
Should this spill into your TBR? Yes— if you are in the mood for a fast pace mystery with a whirlwind romance this one is for you.
Romantic suspense with mystery and scorching heat? Sign me up. Beneath Still Waters is the first installment in a new trilogy from Linny Mack, and it might just be my favorite of hers yet. She’s officially cemented herself as an auto-buy author for me. Emery is burned out from academia and takes a sabbatical as a research director in Tidehaven—a town that quickly proves it’s hiding more than a few secrets. Reid, a former Navy SEAL, has returned home with a strong sense that something isn’t right. The unease runs deep, and whatever darkness lingers in Tidehaven is carefully protected by those with power and money. Linny doesn’t hold back. A murder occurs before you’re even 20% into the story, and from there, the pace never lets up. Emery’s fear and Reid’s mistrust feel authentic, and while they’re clearly trauma-bonded, it works in a way that completely draws the reader in. And the chemistry? Absolutely scorching. There are moments where the tension and heat practically rise off the page. The mystery kept me hooked and turning pages long past bedtime. Tidehaven is brimming with secrets, and I’m all in for uncovering them. I cannot wait for book two in 2027. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you to the author for a gifted eArc of Beneath Still Waters. I am relatively new to reading the romantic suspense genre. I've only read a handful of them, but I am finding that I absolutely love them. Linny Mack did an incredible job writing an epic romantic suspense. The tension, the mystery, and the action were all incredibly well written and plotted. I read Beneath Still Waters in just a few days because I could not and did not want to put it down! This story and these characters consumed me. I loved the dynamic between Emery, a burnt-out scientist, and the grumpy/guarded ex-Navy SEAL Reid. Their tension and romance were perfect! The action and mystery elements of this story did not let up, taking me on quite the wild ride. I would recommend this as a must-read for any romantic suspense lovers.
ARC Review Beneath Still Waters @linnymackwrites Pub Date: 06/09/2026 ☺️
Linny Mack!!!!! This was so good… I had such a great time in Tidehaven with Emery and Reid 💜
Emery, a marine biologist and teacher, heads to a small town in South Carolina for a fresh start…burnt out, questioning everything, just needing a change.
Enter Reid—ex Navy SEAL, quiet, a little broody, and very much the protective type…
Small town secrets, a mystery that just keeps building, and that constant suspense in the background. There’s tension, betrayal, and it all slowly unfolds.
Emery and Reid… there’s just so much tension there and I loved how she slowly broke down his walls. 🥹
I really enjoyed this one. The ending leads right into book 2, which I’m so excited about and can’t wait to read. I’ll definitely be checking out more of Linny Mack’s backlist in the meantime.
If you love romantic suspense with just the right amount of spice and tension, this one has those Catherine Cowles / Devney Perry vibes 💜
A huge thank you to the author for providing an early reading copy in exchange for my honest thoughts!! 🫶🏻
Romantic suspense, grumpy/sunshine, Marine biologist and hunky Navy SEAL, murder and intrigue. Linny Mack has done it again. Another great story in a small coastal town but this time she adds suspense, drama and stalking. I love how we get to enjoy Emery and Reid’s growing relationship throughout the building drama. I look forward to the continuing suspense in Book 2. Thanks Linny Mack for my first eARC!!
This book was SO! GOOD! Ex navy seal x marine biologist, grumpy(ish) MMC, small town, romantic suspense, town secrets…
I did not want to put this book down! The mystery had me hooked and I found myself flying through this book. It had the perfect level of spice and didn’t take away from the plot. I loved Reid & Emery’s relationship, he is definitely a protective MMC. Though their timeline moved fast, their relationship didn’t seem rushed. The perfect mix of romance and suspense.
This book was fantastic. The story build, the characters, the romance and suspense loved it all. I couldn’t put this book down( my kindle even died while I was reading and I couldn’t wait for it to charge to pick it back up and finish reading) The chemistry between Reid and Emery 🥵 I loved how the author included so much detail even down to the smallest things 🐢. I would 100% recommend this book and all others by this author.
It’s fun to change it up and if you’re in the mood for a romantic suspense, you’ll love this one. It’s a perfect balance of both with a nice side of spicy🌶️🥵
Ex Navy seal and Marine Biologist meet coastal charm.
Small-town | Broody MMC | Touch her and die | Deadly secrets | Atmospheric | He falls first
And hello sprayed edges. Get those pre-orders in. I can’t wait for the next book in the series Whispers in the Dunes.
Emery Caldwell has been teaching marine biology but all her grants are rejected, plus she’s grown weary of her average relationship. Then an offer of a sabbatical is within her reach. Emery moves to Tidehaven, a peaceful fishing village in South Carolina. Reid Morgan was once in the Navy Seals but now he cherishes predictability. But, when Emery lays witness to something she shouldn’t have in the marshes, not only is she in danger, so is Reid. Reid finds himself wanting to protect Emery, but that also means he has to pull down the walls he has so carefully built around himself…
The Pros: 1) Romantic suspense is fast becoming a favourite genre of mine. 2) It felt like a mash up of Across the Vanishing Sky (by Catherine Cowles) and Where the Crawdad’s Sing (Delia Owens) - I loved both of those books! 3) The two main characters were great. Emery - woman in Stem and Reid -ex-Navy Seal. 4) The romance 💖 5) The atmosphere -You can feel the ominous danger
The Cons: 1) If you aren’t a fan of spice there are a few occasions of open door intimacy 2) I found Reid’s attitude at the start of the story, a bit baffling - as an ex-Navy Seal. To me, it didn’t ring true entirely.
The Quotes:
1) I marvel at her, hoping I’m not too obvious. This gorgeous woman doesn’t need anything from me. She’s smart, strong, resilient. And for reasons I can’t yet name, that makes me want to give her everything.
2) ...but what’s the point of science if you bury the truth? I like science because it is cut and dry, indisputable. Data doesn’t lie, and if I collect enough of it, no one can argue.
3) The night is quiet and still, the kind of silence that hums with something underneath. The marsh is awake with the sound of frogs, cicadas and other insects in the air, the occasional sound of moving water. But beneath it, there’s a heavier sort of quiet - the kind that waits for you.
The Summary: I was drawn to the story as the description sounded like a mix of Across the Vanishing Sky and Where the Crawdad’s Sing - and honestly that’s a pretty good indication of how this book is. There’s a quiet, eerie undertone of suspense throughout, and with the nature (cute turtles), the romance (sweet and spicy) and the mystery, I was so glad to have picked the book! There are a lot of great tropes including: *grumpy sunshine * small town romance and *forced proximity (amongst others). I was left excited to see where the next in the series will go!
Summed up in a sentence?: Scientist Emery & ex-Navy Seal Reid, are witness to something in the marshes...
I rated the book 4.5 stars - rounded up to 5.
A big thank you to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for the free arc in exchange for an open and honest review!
Oh no, what an ending😭. Thrilled. Is the only word comes to me at the end of this story. Anf now this author is auto buy for me!
This is story has everything it in. A perfect suspense plot, romance part, fun part and thriller. I was engrossed into this from very first chapter itself. Seriously enjoyed reading the hell out of it. I thing i liked the most was the reality and maturity of the characters given that they ever in their late 30s. Their actions had well defined reasons. No unnecessary chessey deeds. If you know what i want to say. I particular loved their journey through life after they fell in love. And they meeting each other and facing fears together plays a very important part of the story. And i have no regrets in it. Everythig was perfect for me Can't say much about their journey due a spolier free review. Also the romance and suspense so well blended that it kept me at the edge of my seat at the end of the very damn chapter. I loved the way the author has setup the Tideheaven. There small little mariana was evrything. I loved the bonding between the boys. Tate, Colt and Reid. Their characters helped building up the story so well. And of course, the writing was easy to read and yet so beautifully put forward for suspense plot. I didn't find myself skimming through the pages even for a damn paragraph. Each word contributed to the plot. And take me seriously, when I say that THIS HAS TO ADOPTED AS TV SERIES, once this series completes And the story has ended in a perfect twist, can't say a cliff hanger but sure a interesting buildup of Tate's story. Can't wait of the book two come up! If you are into small town romantic suspense, ex Navy seal MMC x STEM FMC then this is definitely for you. Everyone must read this book when it is out!
Thank you Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for providing me an e-ARC of this wonderful book!
Linny’s latest novel does not disappoint. As the first installment in her new series set in the small town of Tidehaven, the story initially presents a tranquil, almost idyllic atmosphere. Beneath that calm surface, however, lies a web of dark secrets hidden within the surrounding marshes, transforming the novel into a gripping, suspenseful read.
From the prologue, the tension is immediate, drawing the reader in and maintaining a steady sense of anticipation with each twist and revelation. The narrative balances its mystery with a compelling slow-burn romance, keeping readers invested not only in the unfolding secrets but also in the evolving relationship between the protagonists.
Reid, a brooding and guarded retired Navy SEAL, struggles with his inner demons and the challenge of letting someone into his life. In contrast, Emery - an optimistic outsider searching for belonging - finds herself confronting a much darker reality than she anticipated. As their paths intertwine, they discover a sense of safety and understanding in one another, even as danger closes in.
Their undeniable attraction simmers beneath the surface before inevitably igniting, evolving from a tentative connection into a profound and unwavering love - one they are both willing to fight for at any cost.
As secrets continue to surface and trust becomes increasingly fragile, the question of who to believe looms large. Yet, amid the uncertainty, one truth remains clear: Reid and Emery can rely on each other.
This captivating start to the series leaves readers eager to return to Tidehaven and uncover what mysteries the marshes will reveal next.
SUSPENSE. THRILL. STEAM. ROMANCE. LOVE. YEARNING. — All things I love in the books that I read and we have them all here!
“I want to reach for her, pull her in close and keep her safe.” — Okay but that vibe is vibing. I’m all about a protector.
Reid is a delicious grump who loves his solitude after the chaos that was his life “before” TideHaven. 🤫
Emery is clueless about this town and the happenings within…and perhaps a little too curious. She’s stubborn and winds up smack dab in the middle of something she should never have been that close to. — Don’t worry, Daddy Reid is going to come out of that solitude to wrap his arms around our lovely blonde marine biologist, to keep her safe.
“Use your head, not your heart.” Okay, sir. We don’t practice what we preach, huh? Here for it. ✨
Me to Emery and Reid: “Just fall in love already. No, don’t. Take your time. No, hurry up. Put your hot mouth on hers.” Rinse. Repeat. Rinse, again. That was me the entire first bit of this book. I knew it was coming and loved the buildup. I ate it UP!
“For having such a hard body, Reid sure is a soft place to land.” OOF, baby. 🔥
“Baby, you’re it for me.” — How I feel about this book. 👌🏻 I went to preorder Beneath Still Tides on Amazon and saw that book two, Whispers in the Dunes, releases later this year. (Internally screaming.) Linny Mack is over here trying to take all of my money and I’m going to just let her. This is an auto-buy author for me now. She should be for you, too.
Delicious. 10/10.
Thank you, Linny Mack for allowing me the opportunity to read this ARC. 🖤
4.5 ⭐️ Emery, a marine biologist, takes a sabbatical from her teaching position. She decides to leave her past & her ex in NJ & head to Tidewater SC for a research opportunity.
Reid is an ex Navy Seal, part owner of the local marina, who keeps to himself, in his small coastal hometown of Tidewater. He’s guarded, broody & has survived past war trauma.
While researching marshland wildlife, she crosses paths with Reid & they both see something they shouldn’t. Danger follows & Reid becomes Emery’s protector…and sparks begin to fly 🔥❤️🔥 As Emery’s life is in danger, town secrets are exposed & not everyone in this sleepy coastal town is telling the truth.
I loved this book! The character development was on point. It had the perfect atmospheric setting: a small coastal town with buried secrets & I felt so submerged in the setting. I love Linny’s writing style: short chapters, alternating POV’s (my fave), descriptive (but not too wordy) coastal vibes with a small town feeling, slow burn but wow! when those sparks started to fly DAMN!!❤️🔥 I was swooning over Reid. I don’t read a ton of romance, maybe 2-3 a year, and romantic suspense is a new genre for me….so will I be continuing this series?! HELL YES!! Will I be checking out Linny’s Cape May series? Ummmm YES!! Will you be seeing me post more about my new favorite Jersey Girl author? YES!!
Perfect for fans who love small town secrets, romantic suspense, grumpy protector MMC, independent & headstrong MFC.
Thank you to the author for my ARC. All opinions are my own.
🌫️🖤 Beneath Still Waters by Linny Mack absolutely pulled me into the eerie marshes of Tidehaven from the very first page. The atmosphere in this book was EVERYTHING foggy marshes, hidden secrets, danger lurking in the shadows, and that delicious slow-burn tension simmering underneath it all.
Emery and Reid were such a strong pairing. Emery is burnt out, lost, and trying to rediscover herself after years of feeling stuck, and honestly? Her journey felt so relatable. Then there’s Reid… the broody ex–Navy SEAL marina man with emotional walls a mile high. 😮💨 The man practically screams “touch her and die” energy, and I ate it UP.
What I loved most was how the romance unfolded naturally alongside the suspense. The chemistry wasn’t rushed it simmered. Every protective moment, every guarded conversation, every glance between them had me hooked. And the setting? Tidehaven almost felt like its own character. The marshes, the fog, the isolation… it all created this haunting, cinematic vibe that made the mystery even more intense.
If you love: ✨ slow-burn romance ✨ protective hero energy ✨ small coastal town settings ✨ romantic suspense ✨ ex-military MMCs ✨ atmospheric mysteries
…then this one deserves a spot on your TBR immediately.
There’s danger, emotional healing, secrets buried beneath the surface, and a romance that grows stronger as the stakes get higher. I genuinely could not stop turning the pages because I needed to know what was hiding beneath those still waters. 🌊
Ohhhh. I’m a sucker for romantic suspense and this was perrrrfect. I loved that it had everything I want in something like this. A cute little town, a grumpy MMC, a stubborn and independent FMC, suspense, amazing side characters, plot, TENSION AND YEARNING and of course the absolute “fxck it” moment you can’t help but squeal and giggle out loud for. I adored Emery and the way she handles herself. She has such drive to protect the wildlife and she doesn’t care that it puts her in harms way. As long as the turtles are safe! I loved her sweetness, her sass and the fact that she had no fear of getting dirty. Reid—oh a fantastical hot grumpy retired Navy SEAL. I mean how can you not automatically want to swoon over him. Hardworking, cares about everyone else rather than himself. And when Emery came along—he’s a goner for her. And we LOVE to see it. I loved the curiousness of the story. The sweet and tender moments, the anticipation of what’s going to happen—it makes my heart happy and full. This was my first novel by the author and it won’t be a last. I loved that it was quick paced, not immediate instalove but quick enough that it still felt real. As someone who quickly fell in love with my now husband, when you know you know. It’s nice to see in books on occasion. And this one did right by it. I hope we get little snippets of them both in the future, because they’re just the most adorable couple.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I’m already a sucker for small town romance, but this layered in mystery, suspense, and angst in a way that kept me completely hooked.
Emery heads to the quiet fishing town of Tidehaven after feeling burnt out with life, work, and a relationship that clearly isn’t giving her what she deserves. Reid is the exact kind of broody I love reading about. Former Navy SEAL, keeps to himself, working a quiet life at the marina while trying to outrun his past.
What starts as a slower small town romance quickly turns into something much bigger when Emery witnesses something she shouldn’t have. From there, the tension builds fast, and I could not stop reading. I loved that Emery could be afraid but never weak. She stands her ground and refuses to let fear tear her down.
And that plot twist? Absolutely got me. Now I have to wait until 2027 for the next book, which feels honestly unfair. I need more of Reid and Emery immediately. Also fully here for the redemption, revenge, and inevitable takedowns. Yes please.
Tropes 🌊 💙Small town romance 💙Romantic suspense 💙Broody ex-Navy SEAL 💙Forced proximity 💙He falls first energy 💙Touch her and die vibes 💙Emotional scars & healing 💙Strong, resilient heroine 💙Coastal town setting
Thank you @linnymackwrites for a chance to read this ARC and congrats on ONE YEAR of being a published author!!
This romantic suspense was so good! From the very first chapter, things kick off with chaos! There is murder, stalking, some shady small town vibes, and secrets hiding everywhere!! Tidehaven seems like this quiet coastal town, but beneath it there is so much more going on! Emery (FMC) is such a strong character, she is a marine biologist who leaves behind her old life (and a not-so-great ex) to focus on what she really loves, protecting wildlife and doing hands-on research. She is smart, a little stubborn, and honestly so brave even when she probably should not be 😅. She just wants to study turtles, but instead ends up in the middle of something dangerous! I loved how determined she was though, she does not back down even when things get scary. Reid (MMC) is a closed-off, ex–Navy SEAL, but underneath that grumpiness he is protective, loyal, and sooo soft for Emery. Watching him go from distant to falling so hard was everything.Love their chemistry! Overall, this book has the perfect mix of romance, suspense, and small-town drama. If you love grumpy x sunshine, protective MMCs, and stories where the couple is basically thrown into danger together and forced to trust each other fast, this is for you. I can’t wait for the rest of the books in this series!!
Tropes you’ll find inside: ✨ Touch her and die ✨ Grumpy/sunshine ✨ Small town ✨ Buried secrets ✨ Tortured hero ✨ FMC in STEM ✨ Ex-Navy SEAL ✨ Forced proximity
I am always down for a romantic suspense book, but this one added a MARINE BIOLOGIST who is working on saving turtles. My science heart was very happy.
Emery Caldwell is taking a sabbatical from her job as a professor / researcher to go stay in the little town of Tidehaven, SC. She needs to figure out what she is doing with her life, and what better place than the middle of nowhere, with salt water and turtles. She meets a local, Reid, and finds out that he has been taking care of things at the research center until she arrived. He is a grumpy guy, very good looking… grumpy guy. When she starts digging into her research she ends up discovering that there is someone who is trying to sabotage her turtle research, and on top of that… someone is messing with their habitat. She very quickly realizes the danger she is in… but thankfully she has a grumpy marina man to help look after her.
This book was full of suspense and tension. I really enjoyed Emery’s character and her love for marine life. I also loved the side character, Kayla, who was helping Emery out at the research center. Reid was the perfect grumpy to Emery’s sunshine. The love wasn’t instant, but it was definitely quick but with the appropriate amount of build up.
Read if you love: Romantic suspense Women in STEM Grumpy x sunshine Protective MMC Turtles
Beneath Still Waters is a romantic suspense with high stakes, twists and turns that will leave you breathless and aching for answers. I loved Reid and Emery's story, the atmosphere of the coastal community, the danger, and the love that emerges.
Welcome to Tidehaven. The sleepy, small coastal town in South Carolina where ex Navy SEAL Reid calls home. When unexpected danger surfaces and easy questions can't be answered, Reid takes notice.
Emery needs an escape from her mundane life to regroup and find her purpose. As a marine biologist, Tidehaven is the perfect location for her research until she finds more than turtles in the Marsh.
As deadly secrets are uncovered and Emery's life is threatened, Reid steps in to protect her. Their forced proximity ignites a slow burn that I promise will melt your heart.
I loved how this story flows so seamlessly and breathtakingly beautiful. I recommend Beneath Still Waters for all readers who love a broody MMC, who protects his town, his friends, and the woman he can't live without.
I received an ARC of Beneath Still Waters and this is my honest review. All opinions are my own.
I loved my time with Reid and Emery in Beneath Still Waters. I could have lived in their story for longer and I'm anxious to return to Tidehaven in Whisper of the Dunes, which is expected to be released in early 2027.
Romantic suspense Grumpy x sunshine Protective MMC Forced Proximity
Thank you to the author for the eARC of this book. One of the easiest 5 stars I have ever given and I knew very early on in the book this would be a favorite of mine!
A former navy seal, a Marine biologist, a small southern seaside town and …. Turtles What can go wrong? Well , a lot because danger is lurking and the marsh keeps no secrets.
This is the first book in The Tidehaven series, and my first book by Linny Mack and it did not disappoint.
Beneath Still Waters is romantic suspense perfection with the perfect blend of danger, secrets, love, and spice. And who doesn’t love a good F*it moment and a “Good Girl”
Reid and Emery’s romance is so special. I appreciate Linny writing characters and a relationship where they actually communicate with one another and work through the hard stuff , whether it be talks of the past or plans for their future.
This story is full of intense and jaw dropping moments that start from page one and continue throughout. You will not want to put this book down because you will want to know what happens next.
And the ending… I kinda guessed it right but still was shocked at how it all unfolded!
I love romantic suspense. But I feel like this book just… didn’t work for me? I’m not entirely sure why not, if I’m being honest. Part of it is that I don’t really understand all that happened, I think. I get that it was supposed to end on a somewhat unresolved note, but I feel like I finished the book far more confused than I was supposed to be. What really happened to all the turtles? Who are “the old boys,” and what exactly are they up to? I’m just not totally sold on the story, and not having an idea of the big picture doesn’t help.
I also feel like both Emery and Reid were somewhat one dimensional. Emery seemed to cry at the drop of a hat, and Reid’s only personality trait was protective. Their relationship felt like it was instalove and founded on nothing real.
The mystery didn’t feel fleshed out, and the romance was underwhelming — all in all, not my favorite romantic suspense unfortunately. It was a little bit of a slog getting to the finish line, truthfully. I want to know how everything goes down, but given the flaws with the narrative in this book, I’m not sure whether I’ll continue the series :(

Thank you to Netgalley and Page & Vine for the ARC!
WOW! I was so excited to read this and it was everything I wanted and more. I just want to say thank you so so so much to Linny and her team for providing me with an ARC to read and review.
I loved getting to know Emery and Reid, and watch their relationship blossom. I love romance and I love suspense, but had never read a romantic suspense prior to this! I think the book was full of the perfect moments you expect from a grumpy troubled MMC and bright FMC. I also loved the suspense aspect tied in with the romance and I was pleasantly surprised that I was truly kept on my toes the entire read. I’ve found frustration in other content of being able to guess what happens, but Linny did an amazing job of keeping the secrets and keeping me guessing until the literal last chapter. I highly recommend for anyone who may be like me and have never read a romantic suspense prior. It was great to spice it up and get a mix of two genres I thoroughly enjoy together in one book.
Beneath Still Waters is Officially releasing June 9th 2026 so be sure to preorder wherever you get your favorite books! 💜
✨ARC REVIEW ✨first off, I just want to say Thank you to Linny Mack for giving me this opportunity to read the first book in the Tidehaven series.
This was my first ever Romance suspense book that I’ve read and wow… it was so beautifully written.
It was a rollercoaster ride with soooo many twist and turns.
Emery is a 35-year-old marine biologist who’s completely burned out from teaching college students and ready to get back to what she truly loves, research. She heads to a small fishing town for a six-month turtle research program, expecting a quiet fresh start… but instead stumbles into a dangerous mystery that puts her life at risk. Honestly, poor Emery just wanted to study turtles. 🐢
Thankfully, she meets Reid, a former Navy SEAL working at the marina, who quickly steps into protector mode as the town’s secrets begin to unravel. Between the suspense, small-town tension, and slow building romance, this story kept me hooked the entire time.

This was my first dip into romantic suspense and was intrigued. I'm not a big mystery reader so I thought this would be a nice way to give myself a little romance variety. It didn't dissappoint.
As much as I enjoyed a grumpy, hot ex-SEAL with a smart, take-no-bull STEM dive, the character lacked a little depth and more fleshed out lives than I think we got. The time passage is a little choppy and we go through some long portions where the plot doesn't really move forward. Then, everything wraps up quickly in the end. I wanted to bigger pay off but in the context of a series, I guess that will have to wait.
The realtionship, however, I was here for. I like that each MC brings out something better in the other as their attraction and affection grows. I enjoyed getting to know the other side characters and wouldn't have minded getting to know them better along the way.
My copy had a little of the next book (which is set up in the Epilogue of this book) which did me curious about the next book in the series. This sleepy little town has some big fish to take down!
Thank you to Team Linny Mack for the opportunity to review this book.
She did it again! I really enjoyed Beneath Still Waters. It was a solid four star read for me and I am so glad I picked it up. Linny Mack created such an atmospheric setting in Tidehaven that pulled me in right away. It had that quiet, slightly eerie small town feel where you just know there are secrets under the surface. I liked the main characters a lot, especially the way their pasts were slowly revealed. There is a heaviness to both of them that made their connection feel meaningful, even when they struggled to fully understand each other. Watching them piece things together felt natural and kept me invested the whole time. The main characters were great, and perfect together! DON’T GET ME STARTED ON THE TURTLES 🥹 The mystery element was really well done. It was not overly complicated, but it kept me curious and turning the pages. There are a few moments where things start to click into place that gave me the “omg” feelings. Overall, it was moody, emotional, and perfect in the best way. Definitely worth the read if you like small town stories with a touch of mystery and love.
Wow, this book certainly patches a punch. Romance √ Suspense √ Twisty√ Rogue Characters √ Emery is easy to root for—burnt out, stuck, and just brave enough to take a chance on herself. Tidehaven feels like the kind of quiet coastal town that seems peaceful on the surface but clearly has plenty of secrets hiding in the marsh. I loved the contrast between Emery’s curious, determined personality and Reid’s guarded, protective nature. Their connection has that slow-burn tension that makes the danger feel even more intense. The suspense adds just enough edge without taking away from the emotional heart of the story. Reid’s past as a Navy SEAL gives him depth, but what really stands out is his struggle to let someone in again. Emery and Reid both feel like people trying to rebuild their lives, and watching them find safety, trust, and maybe love with each other sounds incredibly satisfying. A romantic suspense with coastal atmosphere, hidden danger, and two wounded people learning that starting over might be worth the risk.
