One thrown stiletto. One small-town banishment. One morally gray man with secrets.
Frankie Peterson had a conquer the fashion world and avoid distractions like forever love or friendship bracelets. Then one thrown stiletto turned into a viral moment and Mr. Uptight banished her to Gi Gi’s Crossing.
It’s a small town where the gossip’s printed, fashion called in tipsy, and everyone waves. Her punishment? Run the dusty bookstore and convince the locals she’s nice. Spoiler she’s not.
Marcus DeLuca Grant was supposed to stay out of the spotlight. But when a fashion editor nails him in the head with a thrown stiletto, he doesn’t get mad. He gets strategic.
With mafia-adjacent roots and a history best left buried, he’s made a life out of staying invisible. Exiling Frankie to small-town purgatory was meant to fix a problem, not create one. Too bad she’s impossible to ignore, and every argument leaves him a little more undone.
As sparks fly and lies unravel, Frankie and Marcus must decide what happens when the person you set out to destroy becomes the one you can’t live without.
Think The Devil Wears Prada… if Miranda got sentenced to charm school.
This book is truly a gem! It made me laugh from start to finish while also showcasing two so opposite people who are so right for each other and they demonstrated it by banter, sarcasm, smart remarks, and a magnetic attraction that leaps from the pages.
Frankie & Marcus are two people who do not belong in the small town of Gi Gi's Crossing, they are both city people so wrapped in secrets that the small town dynamics give them little space to completely hide from each other.
The idea of being banned to a small town actually helps to soften Marcus, he is so ruled by secrets that it has pushed him to be controling, ruling, but with a hidden softness. Frankie is brilliant, smart, honest, and not afraid to be herself; having to work in a bookstore makes her refocus on other things besides her failures and her business. But Marcus sees her beyond the patina, and somehow she also sees him under the secrets. It is this what makes this slow burn so so satisfying!
A great book! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I absolutely loved this book. From the start, Absolutely Not Him had such a fun, sharp energy that pulled me right in. The vibes felt like a perfect mix of Schitt’s Creek and The Devil Wears Prada, which made for an entertaining and stylish read.
The main character had so much fire and personality, and the banter was spot on. Every interaction felt lively and intentional, and I found myself smiling at how quick and clever the dialogue was. It made the characters feel real and dynamic.
I also appreciated the little twists sprinkled throughout the story. They added depth and kept things from feeling predictable, giving the plot just enough surprise to elevate the whole experience.
Overall, this was a fun, confident, and highly enjoyable read. If you like strong characters, great banter, and stories with both heart and edge, this one is absolutely worth picking up.
While it took a bit to warm up to this uniquely off-center, small town romance, it came with a high demand fashionista with a pension for throwing shoes and a venture capitalist who actually brought the fashionista to his town as a sort of penance for hitting him with said shoe. It's quite zany at the best of times, and the best part is both of them are chuck full of secrets and yet they can't seem to keep their hands off of one another. It's quite a conundrum.
Probably the quote that fits this book the best is, "Sometimes when a person's pretending to be someone else...that's when their true self comes through." It's spot on, especially when it comes to Frankie Peterson and Marcus DeLuca Grant.
Like I said, this book certainly had its moments, especially with Francesca B or Frankie Peterson. She is over the top at the best of times. While I loved her wig collection and the backstory that came attached to each one, sometimes the character herself was a bit much to take. It was hard to know whether to like her or dislike her based on her shifting moods. I often relied heavily on Marcus to guide me, or even other secondary characters, on whether she was the pill I should be swallowing, or the shoe I should be throwing (yes, pun totally intended). Frankie has been through anger management for hitting Marcus in the head with a stiletto, and yet he still feels a bit more penance is due, hence he is the one who sets up for Frankie to be sent to his small town. He was hoping that if she spends time learning how to be nice with the local townsfolk, some of the small town "niceness" would rub off on her. It's a far fetched scheme to be sure, right up there with "Hallmark" movie tropes. It's a nice idea, but one that fell just a touch out of the sweetness realm of that beloved channel. Yes, it's full of quirky townsfolk and Marcus and Frankie fall into lots of the classic fish out of water blunders, there were just too many hit and miss moments for Frankie, at least for me, to make it a complete hit out of the park.
Marcus himself doesn't typically live in Gi Gi's Crossing, but he's there because of his mother's will. Taking the time to not only fix up the manor in which she lived, but also other various projects that the town seems to throw his way. Well, they don't really know it's Marcus, or his brothers, funding said projects because their involvement is unknown and that is just one of the many secrets that run through this zany book. While Marcus does his best to keep his actual identity under wraps, one of his other main goals is to keep a watch on Frankie. Of course he never imagined he'd find himself as enamored with her as he was, nor her outlandish wig collection (it's truly one of my favorite things about her, if you couldn't tell). He does his best to keep things impersonal, especially knowing she'll be furious when she discovers his secrets, but these two can only do that for so long.
This book is a 4 star read for me, mostly due to the fluctuating chemistry and mood swings revolving around Frankie. I realize she was playing a character for a chunk of this book, but it was hard to get a handle on exactly who the real Frankie was. I wasn't sure why everyone was so enamored with her in the beginning when her personality just threw me off, but perhaps that is just me and not understanding her background with the NR magazine she works with.
Thank you to BookSirens for the advance review copy and all opinions are my own.
As a fan of the Naked Runway series from this author, I anxiously waited for Frankie's story - and this did not disappoint.
While you can begin this series here, I highly recommend consuming the NR series first, so the connections are clear before you begin. Ms.Birdie is still guiding the narratives for these characters, with her sharp wit and sly manipulations, done with the best intentions, and understanding her connection to Gi Gi and the Grant brothers makes the layers of this storyline even more entertaining.
After an unfortunate stiletto throwing incident at a fashion show, Frankie feels she has more than paid the price for her behavior. Anger management therapy has left her sharp attitude mildly altered, but for "Mr. Uptight", it's not enough. Taking time away from her position at Naked Runway isn't what she wants to do, but she's willing to do anything to avoid losing her job.
Marcus is the first of the Grant brothers to begin the transformations required at Gi Gi's Crossing, even if he is less than pleased to be doing so. Having Frankie transplanted to town for another part of her recompense just adds to his frustrations. Unfortunately, the chemistry between them isn't easily contained, and her attempts to ingratiate herself into the town are both ridiculous and sweet, and not helping his growing infatuation with her. Unfortunately, secrets always have a way of finding the light, and when exposed, a recalibration is necessary.
It's easy to connect with these characters and enjoy the banter and attitudes in this small town. Ziggy's flair and energy was very entertaining, as always, and I enjoyed how he supported Frankie. The overall self serving (but well-intentioned) actions that she takes with Rae and the friendship club makes it easy to attach to Frankie's prickly superiority complex, and understand the "why" of her decisions.
I recommend this author, her originality, creativity and cannot wait for her next new release. I received an ARC from Booksirens and the author (thank you) and happily leave my thoughts.
Absolutely Not Him by Lisa Wells is a delightful contemporary romance that had me grinning from the very first thrown stiletto to its swoon-worthy finale. This is The Devil Wears Prada meets small-town charm, with a heroine whose “black cat energy” practically purrs off the page. Frankie Peterson is our unapologetically bold, hilariously honest lead — think firecracker meets fashion rebel. Banished to the dusty, quirky town of Gi Gi’s Crossing as a “be nice” punishment (which made me snort laugh more than once), she’s tasked with running a bookstore and convincing everyone she’s suddenly a people-person. Spoiler: she’s not. Marcus DeLuca Grant, aka “Mr. Uptight,” is the morally gray man with secrets, forced proximity, and more chemistry than a high-voltage lab. Their witty, tension-fueled banter carried the story, making every argument feel like foreplay and every awkward moment a delight. One thing I loved was how the book stood confidently on its own — I hadn’t read the earlier instalments of the Naked Runway universe but never once felt lost or confused. Frankie’s voice is sharp and engaging, and the small-town chaos gives the romance a fresh backdrop that balances sass and heart. Marcus’s guarded nature juxtaposed with Frankie's unapologetic flair makes their slow burn both addictive and satisfying. If I had to nitpick, a touch more depth in Marcus’s backstory — beyond the surface of brooding secrets — might have elevated the emotional stakes even further. But honestly, with banter this clever and a heroine this fun, that’s a small quibble in an otherwise delightful read. Overall? Highly recommended for fans of smart, playful romances with strong, unforgettable characters. This one’s a cozy, witty escape that’ll leave you smiling — and maybe plotting your own small-town makeover.
As a self proclaimed "Absolutely Not Fashonista", I was a little worried I would have a hard time connecting with this book. But oh my goodness, it was so hilarious and ridiculous that I fell in love with it despite the fashion disconnect.
The book started a little rocky for me - I had to reread the first page of Chapters 1 and 2 a few times to understand who and what was going on. And don't even get me started on Frankie - I definitely thought based on the first few chapters that she was too much of a jerk and was irredeemable. But Lisa Wells did an amazing job of developing her character, and the payout was so, so good.
The highlight of this book for me was the humor and the absurdity (two of my favorite things in books). Frankie, Marcus, and all of the people of Gi Gi's Crossing were just so damn funny to read about. They were all completely over the top (I'm looking at you, Ziggy), but that was part of the charm. Aside from the more serious plot point with Marcus and his brothers, the events and situations in the book were absolutely hilarious. Without giving too much away, some of my favorite scenes included the bedazzled golf cart and associated "drive of shame, " the drive-in movie date, the attempt at mediocre bedroom activities, and anything involving Harriet the Spy.
The only thing that kept this book from being a 5-star read was some confusing logic in motives/overall plot, but it was an all-around great read overall and I will definitely be checking out Lisa's other books!
Thanks to BookSirens for the free ARC in exchange for an honest review.
It starts with a thrown stiletto (iconic) and somehow spirals into small-town banishment, forced proximity, and a very morally gray man who absolutely knows better. Frankie is sharp, rude, ambitious, and not interested in being liked—and honestly, that’s what makes her so entertaining. Watching her get dumped into a town where everyone waves and gossip is basically a sport was a delight.
Gi Gi’s Crossing feels like one of those small towns that shouldn’t work for someone like Frankie… which is exactly why it does. The dusty bookstore, the nosy locals, and the constant judgment make for great tension and humor.
Marcus is quiet, strategic, hiding a messy past, and clearly used to being in control. His dynamic with Frankie is all sharp banter, power struggles, and a whole lot of chemistry for two people who insist they can’t stand each other. Every interaction chips away at their walls, and it’s satisfying to watch.
The romance is slow-burn but charged, with secrets, lies, and just enough danger to keep things interesting. I also liked that neither character is trying to be perfect—both make bad choices, and the story lets them sit with that.
Overall, this is a fun, messy, enemies-to-lovers romance with a small-town twist, strong banter, and a hero who lives comfortably in the gray.

This is in the Naked Runway series, #5. And a definite must read! Who knew that a chaotically thrown stilleto would change two people's fate. Certainly not Frankie and definitely not Marcus, aka "Mr. Uptight." Frankie's whole life is being editor in chief at the fashion magazine Naked Runway. However, after an extremely serious hissy fit, and therapy her boss, Mrs. Birdie, at the behest of "Mr. Uptight," gives her an ultimatum. Frankie obviously takes the lesser of the two evils which has her proving that she can be nice by going "undercover," in a small town named Gi Gi's Crossing. One thing about Frankie. She's a whirl wind of a woman, unapologetic and doesn't take anything from anyone. Unbeknownst to her, that's also where the mysterious Marcus aka "Mr. Uptight" is and she'll be living at the same place. Needless to say when Frankie gets there in her undercover disguise all the sarcastic and witty banter and hijinks ensue. You'll have to read the book to find out more. It's worth it. It's such I fun, fast read with fantastic characters and plot that you won't want to put it down. I didn't. Now this can be read as a standalone but I do recommend reading the previous books first so you know the backstory of some characters. Again, it's not necessary though. If you want a good laugh, read this and all Lisa Wells books. She never disappoints.
This book - THIS BOOK - 5 ⭐️ it is absolutely a must read!
The book may be called absolutely not him, but this should ABSOLUTELY be on your TBR
One thrown stiletto leads to revenge
But was the shoe really leading to fate?
Frankie doesn’t do small towns 🤝 gets sent to a small town
Marcus and Frankie are tied together in the town - but can Frankie handle Marcus’s secrets? Frankie has one of her own (well two) but she refuses to backdown from being exiled away and having a man control her life especially the man she despises. All the ups and downs that go on - nothing a grand gesture can fix…right? Dive into this book and by the end I bet you’ll want more 🙌
Quotes:
"Your editor-in-chief nailed me with a Christian Louboutin stiletto."
“She doesn't do quaint. She does curated chaos. The town won't know what hit it."
"If you're living in my backyard, I’d like to know whether you're a storm, a squatter, or a story I'l regret not paying attention to."
"Sometimes when a person's pretending to be someone else...that's when their true self comes through."
If you like wacky romcom, the poor guy doesn’t stand a chance, and sort of not quite fade to black, you might like this book.
There was a lot to like, but there was also a lot that got on my nerves. One thing that I liked was that the FMC was the epitome of women being told they’re too much and not enough at the same time. I also liked the inner monologue of the MMC. The best part of the book really was the FMC finding another fashionista in the town and adopting the middle schoolers to teach them fashion.
I like the wacky characters and the small town characters.
Some of the banter was 👍🏼
Some was not. See below.
One thing I didn’t like being that the author tried way too hard to make the banter very much an homage to the old romcom movies rapid fire banter, and if you want call it banter like from the roaring 20s/Gatsby theme. To the point that it was sometimes grating and annoying. Some of it just was like what am I reading?
Another thing I didn’t like was that the FMC was manipulated and gaslighted “for her own good “and that is really a big problem for me.
I will also say I did not like that after all the tension and the sexual attraction, all of the teasing and innuendo and banter between the main characters, even some noble idiocy and yearning, there is one foreplay scene, and then they decide to take the plunge, there’s a bunch of role-play, and then it cuts to and many pleasurable hours later…. Are you kidding me?

Will they/won't they with an enemies to lovers vibe
*Received as a Goodreads giveaway* Ok so, cute story, but the writing style just wasn't my favorite. There are some that just click and I can't put them down, but this wasn't one of them for me. Definitely could be for you! I liked the small town of Gigi's Crossing. The characters really brought the small town oddities and gossip vibes you would expect from a group of people who know each other really well. I did feel like several plot points just fizzled out throughout the book and didn't get resolved which was kind of frustrating.
Frankie is Naked Runway's sassy, bossy, fashion forward Chief Editor. Well... Until she chucked her stiletto at a fashion show and nailed a guy in the temple hard enough to leave him bloodied. Now she's fresh out of therapy and headed to Gigi's Crossing to pay penance to "Mr. Uptight" for injuring him. Marcus (secretly Mr. Uptight) is fixing up the manor his mom left him and his brothers in her will and all the shenanigans begin.
This is part of a series, but I read this book without reading the first and had no issues understanding the characters or story.
Absolutely Not Him was a fun and charming read. Frankie is a strong female lead with true black cat energy. She’s unapologetic, witty, and impossible not to love. The forced small-town “be nice” punishment had me laughing, and the banter between Frankie and Marcus had great tension and chemistry.
It’s contemporary romance meets The Devil Wears Prada, but with small-town chaos, sharp dialogue, and a heroine who refuses to soften for anyone. Highly recommend if you love strong FMCs and clever, slow-burn banter.

I won a copy of this book on a Goodreads giveaway, *all opinions are my own*
This book was hard to rate! Although I enjoyed the ride and read it fairly quick, there was somethings that to me weren't well executed.
I just want to state that, the book was a very cute rom-com. However, the plot and dialogues felt a bit childish and the MMC and his brothers felt a bit too feminine. In addition, I did not enjoy the writing style of the author - mainly the way I was constantly told how to feel. It was like the author didn't trust her readers to pick up on nuances, and felt the need to spell it out every single emotion in the book.
This was a cute rom com that's about Frankie and Marcus and what happens afterwards when Frankie, editor in chief of Naked Runway magazine in a fit of temper throws one stiletto heeled shoe at Marcus which scarred him. Marcus takes revenge by sending her to Gi Gi’s Crossing/Nippleton Falls working in a bookstore. Marcus is staying in the small quaint town that's getting a facelift by the brothers. Marcus is renovating the Manor that's designated in the lists to do in the will of Gi Gi's. Our oil and water characters, Frankie and Marcus were likable and engaging. I'd highly enjoyed reading this story, it kept me entertained. I'd volunteer to read and review this copy I'd received.
This is book 1 in Wells' Not Him series and I'm already excited for more in this series. A small town, contemporary romance read with main characters Frankie Peterson and Marcus DeLuca Grant. While my own personal style is pj's and sweats and sometimes yoga pants and t's, I was concerned my lack of all things fashion may impede my enjoyment - but nothing could be further from the truth. If anything, I loved it all the more. Well written and captivating, this storyline is smooth flowing with great characters and I'm so excited for more!

Absolutely Not Him Book 1 in Not Him series by Lisa Wells is brilliantly ridiculous! I really enjoyed the premise of banishment to a small town, the witty banter and chemistry between our couple and the humor of the situation. It's a slow burn romance which I like but it's a bit too slow and dragged out for my taste. Readers might recognize some characters from the author's previous series "Naked Runway" not necessary to read prior but helpful. Looking forward to more.

Lisa Wells has written another excellent Rom-Com. I have followed her for years and consume all of her books. I fall into the story, join the town and become emotionally involved. Lisa may have out done herself this time. Warning: I could not put the book down and just kept reading. When I finally went to bed, my husband knew I had been lost in another intriguing book! I really HOPE this becomes a series. I also would enjoy visiting Gi-Gi's Crossing!
Side note: This is a stand alone book, but if you have not read the Naked Runway series, it is referenced in the book. It is also fabulous!
I found this gem on BookSirens, and although I am not a romance reader, I thought since it was a New Year I would be a bit more flexible in selections.
I loved the transition from enemies to lovers, with a twist of hidden secrets.
Each character was full of spunk, wit, and sarcasm, which both makes you laugh and yell at them.
The storyline was enjoyable, which made it for a cozy and quaint read.
This story is a lesson about change, it is a pleading to be seen as the inner you - without fear or apology. It is a dare to overcome childhood trauma and accept help to find yourself.
Well written, funny and emotional - a very enjoyable read.

During Fashion Week, Frankie threw a stiletto and it hit Marcus. Marcus is renovating the Manor house in a small town and as punishment, Frankie is working at a bookstore in the small town. I loved the eclectic folks in town and how they worked with Frankie to make her life fun. Having her teach the town how to dress was priceless! Great book and lots of fun!
I really wanted to love this one, but it was a slow starter for me. While the characters were interesting and I loved the plot, something just failed to grab me and I had a hard time focusing. My favorite part….Frankies wigs and their stories. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book provided by book sirens.
Well written book and the story line was interesting to read. I definitely recommend it for romance reader's who loves a good plot.I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
It was a cute, fun beach read. The book wasn't really my style but I could see the humour in it. I can think of a few people who would find it amusing.

A very funny book and two dynamic strange people who fall in love. Very different to the usual love stories. Well worth a read of you want a quirky, laugh along with tale.
I loved this book. The do gooder vs. anger issues will either one win or will love conquer all. This book had lots of steamy scenes that may not be appreciated by all readers.
Beware the Stiletto! A thrown shoe earns Frankie Peterson a trip to counseling followed by banishment to the small town of GiGi’s Crossing. She knows manipulation is involved, but wants to aim her revenge at the correct person. Ms. Wells has created a cast of outrageous characters who interact well. Slapstick resides with tender moments. And just when you think the situation is sorted – another twist arrives.
