Now this is how you do a 2nd chance!!!! Booyah! ✊✊🤛👏👏👏🤛

MCs meet at work on their first day and it’s love at first sight for both. The first half of the story is how they meet, fall in love and become a couple. They literally start dating on their first day of meeting each other and become inseparable. The 2nd half is after their unwanted 5 year separation and their reunion.

What makes this different from all the rest with this trope is that both MCs stay true to one another! Yep, celibate MMC (and FMC) for the whole 5 year separation!!! And guess what folks? It didn’t ruin the story at all by not having him slut around with others or bringing stupid OW drama. How about that? Now if only every other writer can follow this script…..

SLIGHT SPOILER WARNING!!!!

PLOT:

MCs meet on the first day of orientation at their workplace and are immediately smitten with one another. There is an annoying OW who tries to insert herself in their conversation and hijack their lunch date but MMC shuts it down immediately and puts her in her place. From day one, they start dating and become a couple who are deeply in love but MMC is carrying a secret. One which is based on abuse, trauma, threats and revenge. I don’t want to spoil anything because you need to read it spoiler free to get all the feels in this story but let’s just say that the “secret” is NOT based on any OW – past or present.

So they fall deeply in love in the first half and get engaged but MMC is dealing with a lot emotionally and only giving FMC partial truths of his past but not the whole picture until 2 months before they are due to get married, he has to make a devastating & heartbreaking decision to leave FMC to save her & her family. He knows that it will hurt her but he doesn’t see a way out so leaves without a goodbye and heroine is devastated at the loss and angry with him. Soon after, she learns she is pregnant with their kid but she is unable to reach him so raises him on her own.

In the 2nd half, it’s 5 years later and they meet accidentally in his hotel where she is there to interview for CFO position in his company. He ends up meeting the son he did not know he had and the woman he never stopped loving and wishing for a 2nd chance. The rest of the story is them trying to build the trust & hurt and rebuild the love & family they always wanted.

All in all, I enjoyed this so much because it was not a fluffy or immature read. The author took time to develop their relationship so that it is not all about sex and nothing else. She gave us likable characters with deep emotions that one can believe in their love instead of just being told about it and most of all, a love story that rang true because they never stopped loving one another or looked elsewhere for it. For that, I’m very grateful and this deserves full 5 stars as this is what I as a reader want to read in a fictional romance.

Safety:

MMC (28 yrs old prior to separation) – not a Manho. We don’t get any past history other than that prior to meeting FMC, he had no time or interest in women and building a relationship so he only had the occasional ONS once every few months to get the edge off.

FMC (24 years old prior to separation) – Not a virgin. Brief mention that she was in a serious relationship a few years prior and did not use a condom with OM. This is a discussion they have when they first have sex and she wanted him to go without a condom. He in turn never went without one. Also, during separation, she went on 5 dates with different men that didn’t result into anything because she couldn’t move on from MMC.

HEA – with wedding and an Epilogue 14 years later with their son and a daughter.

Final note: To my safety friends, I wish I could insert quotes but since GR won't let me with their damn rules, I just want to let y'all know that there is a passage on Ch 37 where the FMC asks MMC why he was never with any OW in the 5 years that they were separated as he is a man and has needs, and he responds just because he is a man doesn't mean he had to act like a horndog. He said he used his hand to get off with thoughts of her each and every time! How many times do we ever hear an MMC say that??? Just that line alone made this story for me! 👏👏👏

It’s not a bad story but the book is too long for a non existent grovel

They were the perfect couple, everything went amazing between them and one month before their wedding he disappeared, actually, he ghosted her

They get together again 5 years later through a job offer not because he tried to find her and that is the worst thing because he didn’t know nothing about her

She agreed to work for him ( I won’t never understand this trope) and this is where the second part of the book began. He has a tragic past and life and it’s ok but he should have explained or at least watch her from the distance
Not enough grovel and it’s all her fault, she thinks he doesn’t need to do it 🙄🙄🙄 girl…

The book is safe, they are celibate all that time
She raised their son alone, he didn’t know about it

His sister is the next heroine and I think it would be more interesting!

Best 2nd chance I ever read and I can honestly say that it was also the best fictional romance I ever read too!

My only wish is that more writers could write like this. This is the perfect holiday (or anytime) romance to read. It does drag a bit but it was worth it.

For more info, Paula said it best here https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... and those lines on Ch 37 was chef's kiss! 🥰

⭐2.5 Only rounded up because no OWD/cheating

This was extremely fast paced and rushed. Gabe asks Tori on a lunch date the second after knowing her name. On their way he is already confessing to her that he likes her. We never got the details of the lunchdate. Then they are on a dinner date which we also get no details of. Suddenly a week has passed and they are acting like a couple. Gabe asks her to be his girlfriend, ofcourse she says yes. Then they are exchanging ‘I love you’. Since this is ridiculously fast I find everything just weird, cringe and extremely rushed. The first 50% is them kissing all the freaking time and watching movies.

Since they are supposed to be colleagues, writer didn’t even bother with one office scene. Writer actually didn’t bother with anything, every scene is rushed. In the second part where they work together again, at least they are actually present in the office, while not much work is happening.

I didn’t care about the breakup. He did it in such a cowardly way. And since everything was rushed, it was even laughable to me. Him calling her luna and creating a company in that name, so cringe.

This book also needs editing. Then he is supposed to be the CEO, then the CFO. Pick one, and stay with that one, since the positions require different type of expertise. Gabe was applying for an analyst position and Tori as a trader. But suddenly his dad’s company has hotels and real estate? Did writer even do any research about the business world?

Let’s not forget that writer makes them dumb for the sake of the plot. Tori not looking up who the CFO is to not be influenced but ofcourse looking up who the owner is. Making Gabe non/existent with such a big company. Totally makes sense. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Applying for a job at a company who is in a downfall, who would pass on such a great opportunity?! 🤦🏼‍♀️ 🤦🏼‍♀️ With a background as trader and working at Goldman then going to apply as a CFO? Because restructuring finances at Bradman (of all the names one can think of...) (with a trading background?) for two years makes you a perfect candidate for a CFO position? Makes totally sense. The company having difficulties staying afloat paying for her luxury suite and sending a driver while she isn’t even hired yet.😵‍💫

I expected so much more from the note he left her.

This all was just too ridiculous for me. Things got too repetative. At some point I just wanted to fast forward just to finish this up.

But not all is bad. I like the ending and the twist. I liked that Olivia got around somewhat, enough for me to want to read her book, because in this one she was insufferable and too bitter. I liked that Gabe got his HEA, but I do feel everything writer put him through was just too much. At least Tori didnt add a lot to that misery.

"Paper Flowers" by J.L. Jackola is an absolute gem! This book totally nails the feels, blending love and loss like a pro. From the jump, I was hooked; the writing is on point and flows like a killer mixtape.

The characters? Oh man, they’re relatable for sure. You get wrapped up in their struggles and victories, and it hits you right in the gut. Jackola’s style is super vivid, making you feel like you’re right there in the mix, living their highs and lows alongside them.

What really stands out is how the story balances heavy moments with glimpses of hope. It’s like a rollercoaster ride of emotions that leaves you breathless but wanting more. The pacing is just right—keeps you turning pages like there’s no tomorrow.

Honestly, "Paper Flowers" is a must-read that totally deserves a five-star rating. It’s the kind of book that sticks with you, making you think long after you’ve flipped the last page. If you’re looking for a heartfelt read that hits all the right notes, this is it!

Super cute, and a perfect second chance. But some things felt dragged out.
And hated how they started to amends H father for what he did, felt like the h pushed that on to both H and H sister without them actually needing it. What they all needed was probably some therapy.

The story is split in to parts, the first of how they met and fell for each other. It was super cute to read, but H lies about his plan for his father and how he couldn’t be with the h for that plan, was so heartbreaking. But I understood why he needed to go through with the plan, even tho it left them both heartbroken for 5 years.

The second part is how them met again and how they built up their relationship (and his relationship with his son he didn’t know he had.)

Safety:
- Most important, both is only with each other since they met, and both celibate during separation.
- Some owd (not really) in the beginning, a coworker with them both who wants the H, but he shuts it down so nice and quick that it’s not really drama.
- h called H when she found out she was pregnant and H sister answered, h though H had left her for another woman
- h went on some dates during their separation, but nothing more than first dates
- Both experienced before they met, h had hookups and boyfriends (even one as serious that they didn’t use condom). H had few and far between one night stands, and never been tempted for anything more until he met the h

I would have given it more stars but the resolution with the father left me speechless. A man that is abusive to his son should not be given a second chance. especially when he admits he doesn't regret what he did as now both kids are exceptional (because of his abuse).

And this should not be forced by the daughter in law. I would have been extremely pissed if my significant other forced me to give a wedding invitation to a monster sperm donor.

So yeah the last chapters frustrated me and removed any good feelings I had created so far.

The father needed help…

There are several layers to this story, and I think the most interesting parts were the times this couple’s lives intersected. Regardless, the thing that truly hit me the most was Gabe and Olivia’s father needing mental health support after his wife died. That’s when he went completely off the rails…

Anyway, Tori and Gabe meet at a company where they both have new jobs. They are at orientation and he falls almost immediately. She definitely notices him too, and they become inseparable almost immediately.

But there’s stuff going on that she doesn’t know about. And Olivia/Liv is Gabe’s older sister who is focused entirely on taking down their father. Gabe has left Tori a few weeks before their wedding. And Liv makes Gabe delete all of his contacts with Tori. And of course, when Tori calls with news, Liv answers his phone and tells her that he’s moved on and to stop contacting him. And of course Tori gets the wrong idea, as Liv intends, and so Gabe never learns he’s a father.

That’s all in the first several chapters… the rest of the book is equally good and it’s definitely interesting!

Apparently Liv’s story will be next. I am not interested in her. She was a total bitch with no empathy, plus no interest in letting her brother be happy. She wanted revenge on her father and didn’t care about any collateral damage. The author eased up on her a bit towards the end, but I don’t care about her enough to buy a book about her. She never redeemed herself in my opinion.

Solid four stars. This was really good…

Review:
This is my first book by the author. The premise of the book was good. It seemed to be paced really well. There were a few surprises. However, I found myself bored and skipping pages. I was still able to keep up with the story. Something about the book didn't keep me engaged.

Having said that I did finish the book and enjoyed the ending.

I randomly came across this book and am so glad I read it!

Gabe and Tori meet at work and instantly hit it off. They start dating eventually he proposes and they are set to be married. Gabe has a lot of secrets he is keeping from Tori. His past and his family make him pack up his bags in the middle of the night two months before the wedding without so much as a goodbye. Fast forward 5 years where Tori and Gabe run into each other in the lobby of a hotel. Not only is seeing each other shocking to both of them but so is the 5 year old little boy with Tori …🫣 There are so many secrets Tori doesn’t know and most of them kept her protected over the years.

Notes for me

Had a little bit of a hard time getting into. Once the break up happened I was hooked.

Gabe rich family, cruel father, working at same company as Tori using fake name. It was training to take over family business.

Tori she really loved and trusted Gabe. Found out she was pregnant after he left her with no warning.

Reid their 4/5 year old son

Olivia/Liz - Gabe’s bitchy sister. She made Gabe cut any and all contact with Tori so their plan of destroying their father wouldn’t fail.

It was a coincidence G and T see each other when she applies at his family company. He mentioned finding her early after the breakup, but his father’s downfall didn’t happen until right as she applied.

Totally safe!

This book brought out all different kinds of emotions for me. While I was bummed a bit about the direction in which I saw the book heading, I am glad I still went through it. There were twists and turns that were unexpected, but I still felt that the resolution was a bit too sped up towards the end. I was also confused about why the FMC even accepted the proposal when she knew he was hiding stuff. I also didn't really like the MMC's sister's character as well. Overall, this was a decent read that brought out a rollercoaster of emotions. I would have loved if the epilogue didn't skip that into the future and we saw a bit more about the whole healing or more of the reconciliation part, Italy, and more!
