Book Riot’s Most Anticipated Books of 2026:

I recently inhaled the manga series adaptation of Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl, so when I saw that To All The Boys I've Loved Before is getting adapted into a graphic novel, my hands immediately started doing all the gimme gimme gestures. Fans will now have the original books, a great film trilogy adaptation, and soon a graphic novel adaptation. This is just all the wins for lovers of YA romance, Jenny Han, and her characters! —Jamie Canaves

There has never been a book more made for me than this one.

I'll be the first to admit that I'm extremely biased when it comes to anyhting To All The Boys related. I have been OBSESSED with this story ever since I first read it, so as soon as the graphic novel was anounced I KNEW I was going to love it. So it isn't a shock to anyone that that was exactly what happened.

IT IT SO CUTE I CAN'T. The art and the character desing is so well done! Initially I thought that it was going to be a challenge to adapt the story into this format since we already have a visual reference for the story with the movies, but one of my favorite aspects is that none of the characters felt like fanart of the actors (who I wholeheartedly adore). Tthis graphic novel has its own visual identity, its own interpretations of both Peter and Lara Jean (and the rest of the cast) so it's a delight to experiment the story in a new way.

Yes, probably my biggest qualm is that the adaptation feels a little choppy at times, but it's expected when taking a novel in prose into a more concise format as this one, so that's just splitting hairs on my part. I can't wait for it to come out to reread it endlessly.

I really hope we get the rest of the trilogy adapted into graphic novels, since it would make me the happiest boy on earth. FOREVER AND ALWAYS A TATB STAN.

Thank you NetGalley for providing me with an advance copy of the bool!

J’ai adoré ce roman graphique ! 💖

Ça me deg 😭

Thank you to Simon Teen for an arc copy of this in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely adored the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before series, so this was the perfect addition. I loved the artwork in this graphic novel version. It was beautifully done! The details were perfect. It made me fall in love with this series even more.

Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this to review!

This was sooo cute. The artwork was adorable even if the characters didn’t quite look the way I was picturing them. I mixed up Josh and Peter a couple times because of how similar they were. But it reminded me just how sweet this series is, truly one of the best YA romances out there.

I loved the art in this graphic novel so much. I’m a little disappointed they left the Halloween scene in because Lara Jean goes as a Harry Potter character and even though it’s not mentioned you can still tell from the costume.

Unfortunately, most of my feedback for this book is going to be negative, but I'll start with a couple of things that I liked.

I loved seeing the love letters that get sent featured throughout the book. They each get their own page and are really cute. It was nice to have them almost as their own character.

Also, the art style is really cute throughout. It all feels very much Lara Jean with bright colors and bows and baking supplies. The art style is an extension of who she is as a character, and I loved that it's shown off in this way.

Now onto the negative...
The main thing is that Peter Kavinsky, the love interest, is not likable at all. He pitches a fit like a toddler about everything, he's not charming in any way, and he's really selfish. I know he's a teenage guy, but still. When you're the love interest, you have to have some redeeming qualities. Josh was only marginally better, but I still found myself rooting for Josh over Peter. Truly, I hoped Lara Jean wouldn't end up with either of them, but since it's a romance, I picked the lesser of the two evils.

The story is set up almost in vignettes. It felt like every 1-2 pages was a different scene. We didn't stick too long in one place or one situation. I was jolted most of the time because there wasn't a transition for 75% of them. It would just jump to the next scene and try to give a brief description about where we were and what was happening.

But the descriptions were a bit confusing because the bubbles were set up kind of odd. I'm not sure if things will be changed in the final version (as I read an advanced copy), but it was often hard to tell if the speech bubble was a thought, dialogue, or description. Sometimes they were different colors or shapes, but it didn't feel consistent enough for me to understand fully. And sometimes the assumed dialogue bubbles weren't linked to a character, so I would have to do detective work to figure out who was speaking. I read a lot of graphic novels and comics, so I know that things should be easier to navigate.

Overall, I was not a fan. Maybe if you're a diehard fan of the books, you'll like this adaptation. Otherwise, I wouldn't check this out.

Disclaimer: I voluntarily read and reviewed a gifted and advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I received an early review copy from NetGalley but this review reflects my own true feelings about this graphic novel.

I never read the novel this graphic novel is based on but I have watched and adore the movie so I was familiar with the story going in. I really like the art style and color palate the artist chose. It visually gets an A+ from me. I do have a few critiques with the graphic novel as a whole though.

There were some parts that felt a little choppy to me such as important scenes cut off abruptly or not drawn out long enough to make them more impactful. It felt a little rushed I guess. It could have been better.

I noticed a minor spelling error as well. In the scene when Gen is telling Lara Jean about the rumor that she and Peter had s*x on the school trip, she says “on the hot tub” instead of “in the hot tub”. Maybe that was an intentional word choice but it stood out to me as an error because they were in, not on, the hot tub. Again, it’s a minor error, but I left a note on my NetGalley review about it in case they want to check that and make some edits before it’s published.

The last thing I want to share, but is perhaps the most important critique, is that I found Peter weirdly less likable in this graphic novel than I found him to be in the movie. In the graphic novel he felt more shallow and mean than he is in the movie. His character isn’t too well developed. Again, I haven’t read the novel so maybe that’s more accurate to his character in the book, and maybe the movie softened and polished his character to make him more likable. Either way I wish he was a little more endearing because it would make him and Lara Jean falling for eachother more realistic. There was some sort of disconnect for me with how the artist portrayed their relationship. I just didn’t feel the chemistry between them at all.

Overall, I didn’t hate this graphic novel but I didn’t absolutely love it either. I’m curious to read the novel now so I can revisit this graphic novel and see how it compares to that.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before the Graphic Novel by Jenny Han is an adaptation of Jenny Han’s beloved YA contemporary romance. Lara Jean writes letters to her crushes that she never sends as a way to get all her feelings out, including to her older sister's boyfriend, Josh. When her sister leaves for Scotland and breaks up with Josh, Lara Jean is content to help the two get back together, but someone sends Lara Jean’s letters to her crushes, including Josh and an Lara Jean's first kiss, Peter.

I have yet to read the books or watch the films, so this is my official introduction to To All the Boys I Loved Before. I was not sure what to expect since I’ve seen back and forth on whether the series as a whole is a romance or a contemporary, but from what we get here, at least book one is a romance. It follows the beats well, it’s fairly centered on romance, though it does lean heavily on Lara Jean’s POV and not also Peter’s.

This is roughly only the first half of book one in the series, so I expect a second part unless the ARC was only for half of the graphic novel. Either way is fine with me since it does cover a lot of ground and we get a pretty good idea of the romance arc so readers can decide if they want to continue from this volume alone.

The art is beautiful and full of a lot of bright colors without feeling overwhelming. Because of the style, I would put this at lower YA. The graphic novel does mention sex and STDs, but it doesn't depict those things, which does help give it that lower YA feel as well.

I would recommend this to reluctant readers who are curious about To All the Boys I Loved Before but are not ready to commit to a prose novel and fans of the original book

"If love is like a possession, maybe my letters are like my exorcism. My letters set me free. Or at least they’re supposed to."

We’ve all been swept away by the adorableness that is TAtBILB be it the novels or the movies. We couldn’t help but to become obsessed with Lara Jean and her love letters. Now the story hits a little different with this graphic novel form.

This is the story we’ve all come to love. It hits all the top points while adding the cutest illustrations. I will say that for a graphic novel, this was extremely wordy. Either way it’s a great read with a little extra spice. No, not in that way but the illustrations add a little something extra to the series.

If you love the original book series, then you’ll love this new addition. It’s cute and it’ll definitely make you swoon.

A graphic novel of a most beloved story was a fun way to re-enter Jenny Han’s TATBILB world. It was a cute integration of book and movie. I’ll always love this story, however this adaptation wasn’t my favorite. The characters felt different, especially Peter, who seemed meaner than his original character. Also, the entire story was captured in this format, but it felt very rushed and missed deeper character connections, which is the very core of this story.

I screamed a little when I got approved for the ARC haha. Ugh, I do love me some Jenny Han. This graphic novel version of "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" is S-T-U-N-N-I-N-G.

I loved being able to revisit my close, personal friends who I've never met before, Lara Jean and crew. The illustrations were gorgeous and this was adapted so well from book to screen and now to graphic novel!

A must-read for all TATBILB fans 🩷

A pretty faithful adaptation of the first book in the series that weaves a story about timid homebody Lara Jean, having a fake romance with popular Peter K in order to make her next door neighbor jealous. I was kinda disappointed at the illustrations for the half-Asian Song girls, they very much were white-looking, but the rest of the book was gorgeous.

Wow, I truly don’t know what to say. As someone who read all three books in the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before series more than a decade ago and then, swooned over the characterization in the Netflix adaptations, I’m completely at a loss about how to react.

This graphic novel feels like an adaptation in and of itself of both the book and the movie. While the illustrations and use of color are wonderful— truly, they look like a dream and invoke a bubbly, infectiously happy spirit— the plot veered quite far from the course it took in the other mediums. At first, when Peter was introduced in a different way, I wondered if said decision was made as to distinguish the graphic novel from its counterparts and have it weave its own narrative. However, as the story continued, I quickly realized that the extra scene was attempting to provide a more continuous thread of connection— one that was unnecessary. However, as Lara Jean and Peter’s interactions became more consistent (with their fake dating plan enacted), that semblance of connection completely disappeared. Peter embodied all the characteristics of the classic toxic teenage boy, rather than the inquisitive, supportive boyfriend that he was supposed to be. Indeed, it seemed the moments of bonding were missing, despite the inclusion of said scenes throughout the story, for Peter was constantly angry with Lara Jean. So too was the Josh romance subplot given much more introspective thought and attention than it seemed in the movie (though, if I recall correctly, it was still a sticking point towards the book’s end). Forgive me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Lara Jean’s letter to Peter changed too (and not for the better)?

On top of the dramatic changes to Peter’s characterization, the story felt incredibly disjointed at times due to the jumps between scenes. Given the fact that I have encountered far lengthier graphic novels (even ones written for elementary school children), I am quite curious about the reasoning behind its brevity. The Song sisters’ bond, thankfully, was still wonderfully conveyed, but, unfortunately, everything else felt lacking in development and cohesion.

Regardless of my experience, others should still read this graphic novel if they are fans of Jenny Han’s work.

Thank you to Simon and Schuster Children’s Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC!
