There were some parts, here and there, that were insightful, but I found most of it to be gimmicky and unhelpful. For example, there was a list of things that people tend to say to you when you are grieving that you might find off-putting, so there is also a list of responses or "come-backs" that you can use to "put them in their place". The responses were so mean and snarky! If someone is trying to reach out to you in your grief, and doesn't know quite what to say, and so are awkward and unsure of how to phrase things, the last thing that they need is for you to "put them in their place." It was written as though being in the process of grieving gives you the right to be unkind, or cruel, or b*tchy. What??? It just seems like bad advice to me, to potentially alienate the people who seem to care about your pain and who are reaching out to you, and trying to help. ** I received this book for free, but all opinions are my own.

HOW WILL I EVER GET THROUGH THIS? : EVIDENCE--BASED TOOLS TO HELP YOU HEAL FROM HARDSHIP, GRIEF, AND LOSS.
BY: LUCY HONE

I can't express enough how much I feel fortunate enough to have discovered this OUTSTANDING & VALUABLE resource of a book that this turned out to be, which I think that would prove useful to every reader, and I have not read as many Non-Fiction Self Help books that I have found myself maybe in my life that have been ones that I would recommend to every one as this one. I normally would not say that I have read one that I would say would be a one size fits all as much as this one. I don't doubt that the title would have most who would dismiss my thoughts about how I can say that this is for everyone, but this is not my regular genre, but I have not suffered a recent death, but have had many that came in quick succession that I never expected, and never at the time I picked up a book about it. I don't even remember what I had been thinking about that possessed me to choose it, and I did start it with a dreadfulness of which I admit wishing that I hadn't made the commitment that required me to have to read it. I didn't think it was bad, but I did put it aside in order to read something else, because I had not been in the mindset that I thought this would take in order to absorb it and I had some issues that I had regarding another serious fall that because I was half asleep I tripped which this was the second time in my life that I landed on my face with that this time was worse. Twice in six months tripping that both times I was half asleep, and both falls resulted in me needing stitches. Both were hard crashes that my forehead landed first taking the impact that required a trip to the Emergency Room at the hospital because the gashes were deep, and long which would be no other part of me was hurt except the head bleeds hard, and with Concussions. This time I developed an infection that required me to have to go back. I'm placing it in my review to apologize to both the author and Publisher which I had already been behind because of an anticipated emergency surgery that I spent two weeks in the hospital with no symptoms except for waking up, and sick that entire day, and night. That my review is mostly regarding these health problems is because I read this and am writing this with both a concussion, and an infection is because I don't remember as much as I wanted to share, but I did have one small issue and I am going to either contact this outstanding Author's website because I didn't know how to access the bar codes to use the RESOURCE INFORMATION that accompanied all twenty chapters which was part of what each chapter covered as an enhanced feature covering the topics, and I definitely hope I can get those especially for the one at the end which is a summary of the book. I remembered that the book is one that was full of specific information that if I didn't think it was a gold mine of Peer Reviewed Science backing up a large study of people that was done regarding various fascinating things that I didn't know about. In my mind this is probably something that most people wouldn't know unless you had studied the recent or maybe not recent Nervous System components that I am including because I read a lot about the way our Brain works with our Nervous System, and I either missed it before reading this book. I still owe this author a great debt of gratitude because I didn't have it explained in a way which for as intelligent as this author is, she did a phenomenal job at explaining the entire book that I was impressed how she made it simple to grasp. The book is divided up in the first half with ten questions, and the second half of ten questions which the Second half started around 52%. At that point I was so engrossed with how much helpful, and useful information that was presented that built on what I knew but not as in depth as to how much I cared about how much easier my life would be to make sure to incorporate the content. Not to mention crucial to improve the quality of my life that are presented to motivate me to reread it, again. They certainly were important enough for me that can help with a wide audience of people in becoming more resilient, and while it would help during times of hardship they are applicable to motivate me to memorize it, and that is why I think that the practical tips are worth reading this book, and Beneficial to know ahead of time. Sooner or later everybody experiences loss, and it doesn't just mean from losing someone in death. There are many ways of experiencing loss that are common that can be applicable to things that are minor. I know that like the Subtitle includes hardship. I have many things that I Could list that I think this would the scope of which I found this to be a life changing book which just how this author has explained in here which deal with easy to do things to maintain a healthy Nervous System that she has provided different options of ways in which everyone needs to do certain things weekly, and certain shorter Daily routine easy to do at home that are crucial that I might have known, but I think is worth the price of this book alone such as exercises to do to regulate one's Parasympathetic Nervous System that needs to be maintained with getting it out of Fight, Flight or Freeze. There are the weekly options that everyone should do or your Nervous System can stay locked in whichever state its response was activated. Otherwise without these exercises to regulate your Parasympathetic Nervous System that works with your Brain without realizing that your stressful event has ended is still releasing Cortisol and other harmful chemicals into your body long after the stress inducing incident has passed. It can be any stress inducing incident which this author has provided that are various simple choices that can be easy to do once or twice per week to maintain that your Nervous System doesn't keep working with your brain preventing that harmful chemicals that over time that everyday shorter exercises protect your health.

This is a tool I will keep close to me. I define it as a tool because it gives a mind like mine a straight, analytic, even charted process of dealing with the oposite: emotions that overwhelm. It helps me rationalize fear and grief, and I don't use it just for when great losses happen. Sometimes (with my depression and anxiety) I am what is lost, and the exercises and simple, in-your-face writing allow me to get back on track. Here are some examples (just one page: the book is very rich) also recommend the audio.
"How to leverage positive emotions. One of the toughest parts of healing is believing that what science shows works will also work for you; that and finding time, energy, and inclination to bother doing it. (...) While some of the stuff you see on social media might be rubbish, the strategies below have been tested in multiple studies. (...) Spot the good. (...) Savor, don't rush (...) Find the benefits (...) Say "thanks (and mean it) (...) Get out of your head and into the moment (...) Play to your strengths (...) Focus on small wins for big impact (...) ... "

Very informative! I really enjoy books that are based on science and facts and take the time to explain the how and why behind things.

If you're really going through it right now, this might not be the book for you. But if you need some help navigating grief or preparing for an upcoming loss, I think it's a great tool.

I also liked the guides and exercises included throughout the book. As someone who prefers seeing evidence and research backed information, those sections were especially helpful and made the concepts feel more practical and approachable.

Thanks to NetGalley, Lucy Hone & S&S/Simon Element for the ARC

This is an exceptional book. Describing grief in such a holistic way with so many evidenced backed approaches to support healing and just understanding. Written in a way that I just constantly pick it up as my go to support and manual to help me get through the pain of losing the closest person in my world. A game changer.
