The Love Producer: My Unscripted Journey from a Reality TV Career to My Own Happily Ever After

Rate this book
A former Bachelor producer flips the script in this vulnerable memoir about her own journey to finding love after her job turned into a real-life rom-com.

Julie LaPlaca spent years crafting some of reality TV’s most iconic and swoon worthy romances, from hot tub heartbreaks to heartfelt proposal speeches. But behind the scenes, her own love life was unraveling. The end of a five-year relationship, one too many bad dates, and months on the road left her wondering if she’d ever get the happy ending she helped curate for others.

Then came the headlines. The tabloids speculated Julie was the love interest of the very Bachelor she was producing. Suddenly, her life mirrored her own creation, as she was pulled into the spotlight, started to question her feelings, and lines became blurred between her and the show’s leading man. She began to What is real, and what is fantasy?

Once back behind the cameras, a mid-thirties meltdown forced her to reevaluate what is most important in life. In this candid and revealing memoir, she shares the messy fallout of her time as a producer, and her journey to reclaim the script of her love life and become her own leading lady.

The Love Producer explores pop culture’s influence on romance, desire, and the idea of happily ever after. With wit and vulnerability, Julie shares stories of heartbreak, shame, aging, dating, and spiritual transformation. Readers will feel empowered to reimagine the stories we’ve been led to believe, as Julie begins to uncover a love far deeper than what you see on the screen.

I’ll be the first to admit that when I saw this book featured on TikTok, I thought I was going to get some hot gossip about The Bachelor franchise. What a surprise when I saw it on NetGalley a few days later! It was fate.

I definitely did get some gossip. I learned that I never want to be a producer if I ever decided to swap careers. The highlight though was feeling like I had joined Julie’s inner circle of friends. She’s incredibly vulnerable, fierce, and shares a great message about finding your own version of love from within. You can’t help but root for her. I had a great time reading her book.

THE LOVE PRODUCER by Julie LaPlaca. For all of my OG bachelor fan girls, pick this up immediately! Julie is a former bachelor producer. She was there during the golden era in my opinion (Pilot Pete, Hannah Brown, etc.). And our girl dishes the tea! Julie dives into rumors and headlines during her time on the show, and shares her journey! It was so fun getting behind the scenes bachelor details, but then, we get to see Julie’s real life love story and growth. I think it’s so natural to wonder when it will finally be your turn for love, and it was so fulfilling to see her grow to love herself and see her value.

I listened to the audio and highly recommend!

Normally I don’t rate memoirs on principle, but since this is blatantly fan fiction, I feel comfortable and confident giving it a fat 1-star. Julie LaPlaca clearly went to the Scheana Shay school of writing a book for attention while simultaneously making yourself forever unemployable. This book reads like the most insufferable person you know digging back through their situationship from 5 years ago every time you hang out trying to parse new details and thinking that’s “girlhood”. It reminds me of when I was paired with the popular guy in 9th grade science class to do a lab assignment and he said “you’re actually really funny” and I convinced myself he was in love with me, except in that story I was 15 and I wasn’t his boss. The utter delusion on display here is almost magnificent to bear witness to (she devoted more airtime to the loss of the opportunity of being the bachelorette than she does to her literal grandparent), so I guess in a sense I’m grateful she put her story out there the same way I am indebted to the woman from TikTok who was in love with her psychiatrist and did a 28 part series about it.

If you are a fan of "The Bachelor", you will absolutely love this book. Julie LaPlaca, a former producer at The Bachelor/The Bachelorette/Bachelor in Paradise, worked many seasons of the show, including those of Nick Viall, Hannah Brown, Colton Underwood, and Pilot Peter Weber.

Turns out the rumors were true. Sparks were flying between one of the Bachelors and Julie, the producer - which of course is frowned upon. This behind-the-scenes look at the show was fascinating, and reminded me a bit of the show "UnReal". I was pretty surprised by a lot of it actually!

Reading it feels like talking to an old friend while sipping martinis at a bar. There is plenty of gossip in this book, but Julie also goes deeper and talks about her spiritual and holistic journeys. I definitely recommend it!

2.75⭐️ (rounded up to 3⭐️)

I saw this book featured on social media a couple of weeks ago, and I thought it sounded like something right up my alley. So, when I saw it on NetGalley shortly after hearing about it, I knew I had to request it and see what it was all about.

It started off very strong by getting straight into how the author started producing reality television and how she eventually got to The Bachelor franchise (the meat of why most folks are probably going to pick up this book.) She shares a lot about how it worked to be different types of producers on the hit show. Those parts were really interesting to read, I won’t lie. However, once she got past the Bachelor era of her life, the story became more cringy and less exciting.

By the time I was about 2/3 of the way through the book, I was ready for it to be over. It felt very “pick me” in the discussions surrounding the jealousy of the author not being chosen as the next Bachelorette producing Hannah Brown and Pilot Pete’s seasons of the show. It also leaned a lot into LaPlaca’s journey to discover her spirituality through her past experiences and her consistent want to be more feminine and less dominant in the love department of her life. Put all that together with the talks of psychotherapy, the random conversation about aliens/UFOs dropped in the middle of the book, and the thought in the back of my head that Pete was vehemently against LaPlaca sharing the intimate details of their relationship in this way, and this book just fell kind of flat for me by the end.

Overall, I feel like if you’re just coming here to read the story of the salacious relationship between a producer and the reality tv show contestant she produced, then you can skip through most of this book and not miss much.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ALC!

As a fairly regular fan of The Bachelor and its multitudinous spin-offs, I chose to listen to this book in the hopes it would provide a behind-the-scenes look at the production of the show as well as share the experience of a senior producer.

What I got, however, was the production of a narrative. It felt the author could not separate her own real life from the format and narrative arc of a reality show. Each struggle she expressed seemed to relay back to how it would be presented, handled, or maneuvered in a season of The Bachelor, ultimately making the author feel out of touch with reality. If this was an attempt at creating a metaphorical parallel between her own love life and the show’s love-centric throughline, it failed at seeming metaphorical. It in fact seemed like the author used fairytale storylines to justify the misuse of her role as a producer on the show.

Finally, the latter parts of the book felt inherently contradictory, as she talked at length about finding spiritual awakening through hypnotherapy and manifestation. In one line she discussed letting her heart be open to receiving love and the universe sending her what she needed, while immediately thereafter discussing how to manifest opportunities and love in her life. Perhaps it’s my own misunderstanding—or lack of understanding—these concepts, but it felt like whiplash between accepting love and producing it.

Pilot Pete’s season never ends. It was interesting to read about what happens behind the scenes on the show and the author’s reality tv producing career. I just wasn’t feeling the last part of the book which focused on her life post-show.

Thank you to Brilliance Audio and NetGalley for the advance listening copy of The Love Producer in exchange for my honest review.

I feel like memoirs should never be rated, because it’s someone’s story: someone’s vulnerability and soul on a platter. So my thoughts here are based mostly on the writing and the audiobook production.

This story is so digestible from the get-go. It plops you into an iconic music festival and, even more, into the most relatable feeling in the world: the unsureness of being loved or chosen, and wanting to throw all the fucks away but you can’t because logic. Those two things together made for the best bite-size intro, the kind that makes you want to know what happens next.

There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes information revealed here, and it was fascinating. I did wish for more showing than telling at times, but given how much information there was to cover, I understood that building that background was probably the point. I’d be remiss not to mention it, though.

The tension in the writing was the key here. It’s written with a fiction-like feel that makes you want to binge it, even though it’s someone’s real life. It’s not even the details of her life that make you forget- it’s the actual writing. That said, some chapters did feel a bit formulaic. Not that it didn’t work, but it’s noticeable- they follow the same cadence and pattern. If that’s something you love, you’ll love how this is sequenced. If not, you might get pulled out of the story from time to time.

The last third is where it gets interesting. There’s this underlying “why not me?” thread running through the whole book, and you’re hoping it closes by the end. But it kind of just… stays there. She goes into psychotherapy for a chunk of this part, and it was supposed to feel helpful and insightful, but it just came across as preachy instead.

The narrator did an amazing job with this one. I truly saw Julie’s life through her eyes, and at times had to check whether it was actually her narrating. I was immediately invested because of how well she performed.

Overall, I was eyeing this book because I’m a sucker for love and wanted to see the journey. I wish I could say I ended up loving it, but it didn’t hit the mark for me in terms of enlightenment, or gaining the kind of hope a book about finding love should deliver so prominently.

I love a good memoir, and this one did not disappoint for me. I will be honest, it's not as juicy as I first thought it would be regarding the Bachelor stuff. It's definitely a big part of Laplaca's story so it is interwoven in the book, but this is more of a walk through relationships past with the author. It still worked for me, and I found it entertaining and I wanted to keep listening. I listened to the whole thing in two sittings. The narration of the audiobook was great.

I will say that I think it may do this book a disservice for marketing purposes not to have it listed as spirituality under genres as well. It does mention at the very end of the description that it's partially about the spiritual journey of the author. But, I felt like it went kind of far in for some reader's comfort. I'm a spiritual person, so I enjoyed that part of the book, but I could see where people might be expecting a completely different book when they first pick it.

All in all, I'm really happy I gave this one a chance. I really enjoyed the book. I do recommend the audio version, I didn't read the print.

This is one of these memoirs where I wonder “who asked for this?” I understand there is a little drama and tea in here about Julie’s time working the Bachelor (why I, and most of us, will pick it up), but it’s only 1/3 of the book, which takes some strange turns by the end. I liked that the beginning didn’t go too in depth about childhood and we jumped quickly into her ambition in working on TV; I could’ve used more of that and more of her bachelor journey, which felt fairly surface level other than her relationship with HB and PP. It felt icky at times knowing how Pete is against her writing this and how much she talks about him, I wouldn’t say she makes their connection look strong enough to justify what she writes. The ending got a bit too woo woo for me with the psychotherapy talk; I kind of was lost by the end. This was a quick listen, I did it in about one afternoon, but not sure I would actively recommend it as a “good” read.

The narration was solid, I did find it surprising Chris didn’t read his forward, though I didn’t need to hear his voice, either.

I was so thrilled to get last minute early access to this on the eve of its publication and finished it in less than 24 hours! A long-time Bachelor Nation member and former Bachelor podcaster, I couldn’t wait to hear the story to layer into all the things I’d followed over the years. It was very ironic that I just finished Hannah Brown’s memoir last week!

The book definitely did not disappoint, sharing an inside look behind the show. I’d always appreciated the role producers do play in bringing the show to life so it was interesting to relive some of the key show moments in recent years from a very different perspective, showing the impact these intense moments on the show can have on their personal lives as well — and the taxing toll the show really takes on all involved behind the scenes.

The ending took an interesting look at how her life went on beyond the show — a sharp transition back into true “reality reality”. An interesting read from this world from a different POV. Know other Bach fans will enjoy this one, too.

Thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for the ARC of this audiobook!

If you're a fan of The Bachelor, you'll probably find this memoir interesting. Julie LaPlaca shares plenty of behind the scenes stories and insider details about what it was like producing the show, and those were my favorite parts of the book.
In the audiobook, Julie talks about how much she loved her career and how working on the show affected both her personal life and her relationships. She is very open about her vulnerabilities and struggles.
I especially enjoyed learning how the show worked behind the scenes and hearing about the different production roles she held. However, the last quarter of the book lost me a bit. As the focus shifted more toward her search for love and wondering if she'd ever find "the one," I found myself less interested. For me, it was a strong read until the final 2 hours.
Vanessa Johansson did a great job narrating the audiobook. That said, I always find myself wondering why some authors choose not to narrate their own memoirs (if they are still alive). Hearing the story in the author's own voice often makes it feel even more personal.

As someone who was a huge fan of the Bachelor/Bachelorette for many years, I knew I had to read this book as soon as I heard about it. I knew who Julie LaPlaca was because I remember the headlines a number of years ago about her supposed relationship with Peter Weber. I never thought about how much those brief headlines could have affected Julie's life but clearly, they had a huge impact on her. Overall, I thought this book was okay. I definitely enjoyed the parts about working with Hannah Brown and Peter Weber, but I wish she would've delved more into what her life was like working on the show. It felt very surface-level to me. And isn't that why most of us are reading this book in the first place?!? We want all the tea about working behind the scenes on the show! The part after she left the show was a little too woo-woo for me, but I'm glad that Julie found her own happiness. Overall, I'm not sure that reading the whole book was worth the small amount of gossip we got. You could read one article about the book and get all of the important parts. I feel bad that Peter didn't want her to publish this but...it's her story and she is allowed to tell it.

-I’m not sure when we decided that anyone can write a book and has a story worth telling
-I listened to lots of interviews before reading the book. Some in support of the author and others against the author and after reading the book, I have to say I agree with the people against her
-she claimed in interviews she never used her job as producer to sway Pete’s decisions but then gives specific examples as to moments when she did
-it honestly felt like she really over romanticized the whole relationship… like was there really much there besides them sleeping together? Also kind of taking advantage of the man after he just had two very PUBLIC breaks up. One of which would not have happened had she not orchestrated a reconnection with a contestant that he had NO IDEA was happening. If this was a male producer with a female lead people would be outraged
-honestly if you are a bachelor fan and want to read this, just listen to nick viall & Kaitlyn bristowes podcasts instead

Interesting memoir about a bachelor producer who had an entanglement with her lead. That part was interesting to me and the build up to. Once that was over, the story became a bit less interesting as she got into a lot of spiritual things like past life regressions. I kinda wish she did pursue writing a romcom about a producer and a bachelor contestant.

The behind the scenes of this is interesting. Pilot Pete did not want the author to share intimate details of their relationship and did stopped responding to her. Did this feel invasive or PP’s privacy? Yes. A bit. Neither of them come off looking good.

While I liked this, I can see people not wanting to read the whole book after finding out the details of her relationship with PP.

Enjoyed the narration of the audiobook.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy.

Talk about a page turner. If you've always wondered what goes into the making of The Bachelor/Bachelorette franchise, Julie was the producer behind all of their best seasons and contestants, IMO - including Hannah Brown's. Expect to learn about the show, but more surprisingly, about your own relationship with love.

I was not expecting this to go so deep, but Julie (now a life coach and hypnotherapist!!) gets vulnerable and takes us through the complex psychology of someone whose job is to help people investigate within to make aligned calls around love & desire, while ignoring this expansive + healing process for herself.

The book comes after she's done the inner work (and helped other women do it, too). I laughed, cried, and journaled about my own previous relationships. Amazing journey, and quick read, highly recommend for romantics, reality show fans, and seekers.

I got an early copy of Julie LaPlaca’s book and LOVED IT!

She vulnerably shares her story in a way that’s deeply relatable to the modern woman who has devoted herself to her career while experiencing heartbreak from the most unexpected places.

Her writing feels like you’re reading your favorite rom-com, but unlike the version of love Hollywood often portrays, this story is deeply rooted in truths that make you think about the hidden beliefs influencing your search for love.

I highly recommend this book—not just for Bachelor fans, but for anyone who has found themselves looking for love and wondering, “When will it be my turn?”

Loved this memoir! Read it in a day. I found myself rooting for Julie on her journey, and even felt myself relating to her in a lot of ways. She’s real, raw and vulnerable- something I admire in those that write memoirs. I have to say, I was drawn to read it having remembered The Bachelor/Peter Weber rumors back when it was happening. The memoir turned out to be so much more than a “reveal” on Julie and Peter’s relationship. It was Julie’s journey on finding love, ultimately with herself. I’m still rooting for her and know her once in a lifetime love is out there. ❤️

I wanted to read this as a former and long time member of bachelor nation for the tea more than anything. It definitely provided that but the more I read the more irritated I got with Julie. She did bear herself in a brave way with this book but I feel like she was looking for validation in her irresponsible decision making with love during her time as a producer on the show. She gave off “pick me” vibes. Regardless of my feelings of Julie herself, the book was fine, nothing extraordinary.

As a long time Bachelor fan, I was hoping to get some piping hot tea.
If you're looking for a lot of Bachelor gossip, and for the producers to be just as devious as on the TV show "UnReal", you will be disappointed.

What you will get is a shockingly insightful book of self discovery of a woman as she navigates the entertainment industry. Do I subscribe to some of the things she spoke about as helping rediscover herself (ie. Crystals, hypnotherapy), no, but I do think it was quite interesting to delve into Julie's life, and her self reflection about where her life was going.

I really wanted to like this book. I truly felt like it didn’t need to be a book. It could’ve just been a podcast episode.

I am here for all the self growth, but I was just very conflicted with the details of Peter. I understand that it’s part of her story, but I also felt like she either should have written a story about her own personal growth as a bachelor producer or a story about her relationship with Peter because they don’t go hand-in-hand with each other. It just isn’t a good look for self discovery and growth. It’s very one-sided and seemed very pick me.

As a longtime Bachelor fangirl I had heard the rumors about producer Julie and was very excited to receive an early copy of her book. It did not disappoint and was filled with lots of tea - but I was most impressed with the honesty and vulnerability that came through every page. Even though some parts made me cringe, I admire her for not being afraid to tell her full story. I found her journey to be relatable and inspiring, and will be rooting for her future!

I loved The Love Producer!! I couldn’t put the book down and read it in two nights! Julie was so open and honest and you could feel that her heart was torn between her career and finding everlasting love. The fairy tale love that everyone dreams about. I thought she was tasteful in telling her story and not bashing the men that she loved and cared for but ultimately did not end up with. Self love was found however in her journey and I hope that her Prince charming finds her soon.

I ended up skipping the last hour of this audiobook. I thought it was going to be more about the Bachelor franchise and the job of being an executive producer. I just found that part super fascinating but only a 1/4 of the book was about that. It was more about her love life before and after. I wanted to hear more about her career so that was disappointing. Maybe I was confused what it was supposed to be about so I didn’t rate it. It’s just not what I was expecting. Sorry.

There have been so many fiction books written about the emotions that go into working on dating shows, and now Julie LaPlaca has given it a real-world twist. Follow her through a journey of self-discovery, growth, and yes, love through her career as a reality tv producer, coming to a head during the 24th season of The Bachelor between 2019-2020. Julie is relatable and fun throughout her story.

This was probably one of the most well written memoirs I’ve ever read. You’re going through this insane journey with Julie that includes success in her career, building, genuine connections, and ultimately her path and finding love. You’re also learning the ins and outs of the bachelor production getting soooo much tea. Bachelor fan or not you will love this book. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

This book should never have been written. The author acted completely inappropriately in her situation as a producer and she doesn’t seem to really accept blame and fault for this, both in the book and on social media. The fan fiction scenes were cringe. You couldn’t torture this information out of me. This is BAD mess. Good luck, girl.

If you’re looking for Bachelor insider stories, you’ll probably be disappointed. If you’re interested in Julie’s personal journey, you’ll likely enjoy it more than I did.

I also had a hard time relating to the lengthy discussions of reincarnation, toad energy, chakras, ayahuasca,LA wellness culture - LA has such a unique subculture
