This may be the only time I write a rave 10/5 star review for a book and then go on to say it’s not for everyone, and I think @robcesternino would agree and endorse the review 🤣🤩 this book, as a super fan of Survivor, is EVERYTHING. Not to brag, but I got every reference, from easiest / most well known (sorry @dabudoodles but you are incredibly well known) to the most obscure “cmon Reed!” moments. I cackled. Like genuinely was laughing out loud as I read it and had to share the comedic bits with my husband, a fellow super fan, who hasn’t read a book in years but is dying to borrow this one. Any fan of Survivor, who understands the lore, desperately needs this book. It is a pure joy to read if you know the game inside and out. But, if you’re like “yeah I watched Borneo when it came out”, this isn’t the book for you. It would go right over your head. But to the RHAP listeners, the super fans, the ones who have been personally victimized by production and the winner’s edits… this book is absolutely, undoubtedly for you. A huge thanks to @atriabooks for my early ARC; it was a treat to finish reading on the day Rob premieres on THE TRAITORS! ⚔️ is anyone else planning to watch tonight? I wouldn’t miss it!

So anyone who knows me knows that it goes without saying that I am a huge Survivor and RHAP fan. So obviously, I was very stoked when I learned about the existence of this book. As much as I love podcasts, I have always preferred the written medium so it felt like this book was made just for me.

If you are a listener of RHAP then you know that Rob Cesternino is the Survivor historian so who better than him to write the definitive guide to the show. I will say that this book is not for the casuals. It is chock full of spoilers, history, references, and inside jokes that only someone who has watched Survivor in its entirety will understand and appreciate. It truly is a love letter to the Survivor superfan.

Even though I have clocked in hours listening to Cesternino analyze the game, I still found myself intrigued by the insights into the game that he outlines in this book. I would imagine this would be the perfect book to read if you are preparing to go play the game yourself. Cesternino provides unique insight into the game as a past player himself as well as a superfan.

You can see the passion Cesternino has for this show through his reverent writing. He clearly knows his stuff. Just like his television persona he brings a sense of wittiness and humor into his writing that makes the experience of reading this book a joyful romp. I especially enjoyed his analysis of all the big players to ever be on the show.

Well, if you’re reading this review at all it probably means you are a Survivor fan, and if that’s the case, run, don't walk to your nearest book store to pick this one up. It was made for you. Thanks to Rob for writing a book made for and by the superfan.

Thank you to NetGalley & Atria Books for the eARC!

Thank you so much to Rob, Atria Books, and NetGalley for sending me an advanced e-copy of this book. I am so honored. I’m a RHAP fan so to get my hands on this early was amazing. I loved it! I loved the setup and organization of this book. Some of the chapters included short vignettes about the players or memorable moments throughout the show, and some were longer chapters. I teared up at the end knowing we did not get our podfather on Season 50 or a previous returnee season, but also appreciating everything that he has achieved to this day by following his path! Again thank you so much and can’t wait to continue to listed to RHAP!!🩷

Rob Cesternino is one of many Survivor legends who never won the game. He turned his passion of the show into a successful podcast, dissecting the game, the players, and the masterful moves each season. In this book, Rob talks through the history of the legends, how Jeff Probst went from host on the sidelines to being immersed in the game, and how hopefuls out there can prepare to be on the show if ever selected.

This was a fun one for me, as someone who has been in the process of watching Survivor 1-50 in order for the first time. I’m currently on season 41, so I definitely had to cover my eyes and ears for parts of this book. I strongly recommend an immersive read for this one for a few reasons: 1.) Rob narrates the book, and as a podcaster, not only does he have the perfect voice for it, but he’s also hilarious. It really elevated my experience. 2.) The illustrator did an amazing job, and I’m thankful to have had the opportunity to enjoy the graphics throughout. I learned so much, and enjoyed getting more insight to one of my current passions. Like David, I hate being outside - but maybe one day, I’ll want to play Survivor, and this book will help me do that. Yes Rob, I’ll use your code phrase when I do.

I've been an RHAP patron for years, so I am definitely the target demographic for this book. It's a fun overview of the show; the only thing I would have liked more of is the stuff at the end where Rob talks about his own life and reflects on the podcast. The audiobook is especially enjoyable since Rob obviously thrives in an audio medium, and it includes his impressions of different characters. However, the physical book has illustrations, so you're in for a fun ride either way.

If you’re a fan of Rob, absolutely read a physical copy while listening to the audiobook. I’m obsessed with all the ways the audiobook deviates from the physical.

If you’re a fan of Rob and/or Survivor, you don’t need me to encourage you to read the book. You already know.

It’s a beautiful thing to watch someone fulfilling their destiny, and an honor and a Gervase to play a small, small role in it.

“To anyone who keeps the torch of Survivor alive in your heart - you are my tribe.”

Part Survivor biography, autobiography, and how-to guide, The Tribe and I Have Spoken is a love letter to the best reality show on television. If you’re a longtime fan or only recently joined the Survivor community, The Tribe and I Have Spoken has something for everyone.

Cesternino guides readers through Survivor’s tumultuous history through anecdotes and quotes showcasing where Survivor has been and where it’s going in the future.

There is a whole chapter dedicated to detailing Survivor’s best players. From Boston Rob to Dee Valladares, Cesternino talks through their strategies/gameplay and how they influenced the game.

If you’re looking to apply, there’s an entire chapter that gives gameplay advice for every step of the game. While this was the least exciting chapter for me (as I have no interest in applying), I appreciate the detailed advice Cesternino included.

The illustrations are amazing. They’re funny, accurate, and help put faces to names.

Overall, The Tribe and I Have Spoken is a love letter to Survivor. It’s full of inside jokes and reminders of moments you may have forgotten in the past 25 years of exciting reality television.

as a long time fan of the rhap network that rob has created, i was excited to dive into his unofficial survivor guide. while i’ve not been a survivor fan for long (big brother for life), it was an incredibly in depth look at iconic characters and moments from the show’s 50 season history, as well as rob’s own take from his time on the amazon & all stars. full of his trademark humour, this book is great for survivor fans and non fans alike!

I absolutely loved The Tribe and I Have Spoken.
If you’ve been watching Survivor since the early days, this book feels like sitting down with an old friend and reliving all your favorite moments — the players, the twists, the alliances, the debates, and the memories of watching it unfold in real time. And if you discovered Survivor during its Netflix-era resurgence, this is a fantastic way to experience the deeper history and lore alongside longtime fans.
Rob Cesternino brings such a unique perspective as both former player and longtime analyst through Rob Has a Podcast. His insights feel earned — not just from playing the game, but from years of podcasting, analyzing strategy, and genuinely having fun with Survivor and its community. There’s even a moment where Jeff Probst calls Rob “too clever for the game” — which feels especially meaningful knowing Rob was arguably the first true superfan cast, long before superfans were the norm.
One of my favorite parts is the “You Had to Be There” section, where Rob walks you through the legendary watercooler moments and explains why they mattered at the time. Sure, everyone remembers Jonny Fairplay and the infamous grandma lie — but who remembers Billy Garcia falling in love? I literally laughed out loud flipping through these pages. Rob doesn’t just recap the moments — he recreates the feeling of watching them live, when you had to wait a week between episodes and debates carried on for days.
The Heroes and Villains Hall of Fame is especially great, helping newer fans understand why certain players hit so hard culturally, while longtime fans get to relive those iconic moments all over again. There’s also a section with Rob’s advice on how to play the game, which is both smart and hilarious.
If you’re part of the RHAP community, you’ll spot fun Easter eggs and familiar lore. But you absolutely don’t need to be — this book works for anyone who loves the show. And even if you’re not a hardcore Survivor fan: if you enjoy reality TV at all, this is still a really entertaining and insightful read.
I’m also genuinely excited to have a Survivor coffee table book. I can’t wait for the hardcover to arrive at my house on May 5th — this is the kind of book you leave out, flip through, and share with friends.
More than anything, this isn’t just a love letter to Survivor. It’s a love letter to the fans, the personalities, and the shared experience of watching something evolve over 25 years and nearly 50 seasons. Rob has built an incredible community around this game, and this book reflects that spirit beautifully.
Entertaining, thoughtful, nostalgic, and genuinely joyful — highly recommend.

**Thank you to Atria Books for this free digital review copy.**

I have been a fan of the show Survivor for at least the last decade (I genuinely don't remember how or why I started watching, but I believe I was in college), started listening to Rob Has a Podcast not too long after, and became a paying member of Rob's Patreon sometime in the last year or so, so when I was approved to read an early copy of "The Tribe and I Have Spoken," despite really not vibing with the chosen title, I was giddy.

The book delivered exactly what I would expect from Rob. Lots of inside jokes and quotes from both Survivor itself and RHAP, deep insight into the game and the people who have played it, and a clear love and passion for this show that has completely changed Rob's life—as well as the lives of so many who have participated in it or even just watched for the last 25 years. I think anyone who calls themselves a fan of Survivor would love to read these essays.

If I have a complaint about the book, it's that I kind of wish Rob had waited until after season 50 aired (as well as US Traitors season 4) to complete the writing, because including things from this legendary season would have felt much more satisfying that the several nods to "we'll see what happens..." I also would have appreciated captions on the illustrations; maybe I'm not a big enough fan or maybe it's because I was reading this early copy on my phone, but I wasn't always sure who was who in the pictures.

The Tribe and I Have Spoken is a detailed look at the world of Survivor, told from the perspective of someone who has both played the game and covered it for years. The book goes through the history of the show, touching on major seasons, standout players and the strategies that have shaped how the game is played. It breaks down how alliances, blindsides and twists have evolved over time and talks about key moments from tribal councils and challenges. The author also brings in insights from his podcasting and interviews with some of the players. Along the way, the book highlights how Survivor has grown and changed, both on-screen and behind the scenes.

I’ve been watching Survivor since around season five so I found this book interesting overall. It’s packed with stories about past players. There are so many that I kept having to pause and Google who was being talked about (I still didn’t remember a lot of them). It was cool getting a look at the history of the show, how much it’s evolved and behind-the-scenes details. My favourite part was chapter six, which lays out the ultimate Survivor playbook, from getting cast all the way to winning (or not). Fans of Survivor will enjoy this book.

This book was the perfect love letter to Survivor by the contestant who has championed the show the most. Reading Rob's perspective on various strategies, past moves, and character arcs throughout the show's history, including his own, offered a unique look into what has made this show special for the past 25 years. Whether you are a Survivor super-fan who has seen every season, a RHAP patron who listens to every podcast throughout the current season, or someone just getting into the show, this book is the best synopsis of the best reality competition show on television.

The illustrations by Sam Bond were incredible and really made this book feel one-of-a-kind. Normally it takes me a while to finish reading a book, but I couldn't put this book down. I loved taking a trip down memory lane, revisiting some of my favorite contestants, favorite moves, and most importantly, hearing the perspective of my favorite podcast host. I couldn't help but get a little emotional at the end of the book knowing how meaningful this must have been for Rob to write.

I highly recommend pre-ordering this book as soon as possible.

Rob Cesternino “knows it all” about Survivor and in his new book he shares that knowledge with the rest of us. I loved reading his behind-the-scenes stories and insights, especially his takes on the greatest players and moves we’ve seen in the game! The book shares his personal experiences with the show, his opinions of the game and its players, and a how-to manual to play your best should you be selected to play the game someday. Rob Cesternino is a prolific podcaster who has interviewed hundreds of players since 2010, and throughout the book he weaves in quotes from those conversations, offering readers an added layer of insight into the game. It was fun to hear from some of our favorite players! Rob C. did a fantastic job of interjecting inside jokes and easter-egg type references into his writing, which had me genuinely laughing out loud.

If you’re a fan of Survivor, you’ll want to read this book! It’s packed with insider knowledge and memorable moments that will deepen your appreciation for the game and make you want to immediately start a rewatch!

I enjoyed The Tribe and I Have Spoken. Part history, part autobiographical, part musings, Rob’s knowledge and humor really shine through. The book starts off strong with a foreword from Stephen Fishbach. As a fan of the Know-It-Alls, I loved seeing him included. Rob’s introduction was witty, and I laughed at the Boston Rob bit and the slashed guys. This is definitely a book for fans and if you haven’t seen most of the seasons of Survivor, some things will go over your head. I liked that each chapter had winner spoiler graphics and hand drawn pictures. I do wish there were captions under each picture. The footnotes were funny and classic Rob humor. I learned quite a bit and was surprised to learn who were recruits and that Jeff had his own talk show lol. The chapters were a little long and I could see chapter six being hit or miss for readers. I really enjoyed chapter eight and getting more insight into Rob's journey. It was fun reading this during season 50 and seeing him reference events from the show. Thank you to Edelweiss and Atria Books for the ARC.

The Tribe and I Have Spoken by Rob Cesternino

An absolute love letter to Survivor written by someone who knows the game, the fandom, and the chaos better than almost anyone. What makes this book special is how deeply insider it is. This is not a recap or a casual overview. It’s sharp, hilarious, reference packed, and written for fans who know the lore, the edits, the heartbreak, and the moments that live rent free in our heads. I laughed out loud more than once and felt personally seen as a superfan.

Tropes & Vibes:
🏝️ Survivor lore deep dive
🎤 RHAP energy
😂 Inside jokes and callbacks
📺 Gameplay obsession
🔥 Superfan validation

Read this if you like:
Survivor at an unhinged expert level, RHAP humor, deep cuts and obscure references, and books that feel like being in the fandom group chat.

I watched Rob Cesternino on his previous Survivor seasons, and have followed him on RHAP ("Rob Has a Podcast") ever since. I was excited to see that he has a new Survivor - based book coming out, and quickly requested to read it! His first book is entitled, "The Tribe and I Have Spoken: The Definitive (Unofficial) Lore and Legacy from the Game's Smartest Surviving Loser" and goes behind the scenes of what being on Survivor is really like. He details the history of Survivor and its host, Jeff Probst, as well as some of the best moments and the most popular Survivor players. Rob even details his advice for how to get on the show and be successful as well. Although I've listened to Rob for years, I learned a lot about him and his own life pre- and post- Survivor.

This book was a fun, easy read and I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Survivor. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

This weird thing is happening with this book... a question of audience, I suppose. As Rob makes a point to discuss, his whole thing is for the tribe that follows him -- the audience of Survivor (and/or Big Brother) and his own podcast RHAP, and that's really awesome. So many parts of this book feel like it was written for the Survivor-newbie, but then there's other sections that are clearly steeped in Survivor lore that I can't imagine a casual fan not getting lost in them.... but then, there's the simple classifications of the eras of Survivor. If anything, it's a condensed oral history of watching/experiencing Survivor, and that works well.

So - is it good? Yes, definitely. Rob knows his stuff. Do you like reality TV competitions? Then give it a try.
If, like myself, you absolutely love and adore Survivor, then there may not be a lot new here for you - but it is interesting and certainly worth reading Rob's take on the whole awesomeness that is Survivor.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review the ARC of this book.

5 stars

Wow, this book is extensive, expansive, and all the superlatives. One part history of the game/show Survivor, one part extensive commentary about the best players in the history of the show, one part all the most historic “water cooler moments,” and then to top it off, an entire guide for getting on the show and playing the game.

The target audience is definitely mega-fans of Survivor. As someone who was a mega-fan for the first 7ish seasons, there was a lot of familiar storytelling. This book would definitely be a great gift for someone who is not only a fan of the show, but also of Rob’s podcast.

As a Survivor fanatic and RHAP fan, I devoured this book in 24 hours. Rob and his team did a great job with the organization of this book. Can’t recommend the audiobook enough because the quotes, memories, and jokes would not be the same if not heard in Cesternino’s own voice and cadence. I laughed out loud so much. As others have mentioned, this book is not for everyone…but I assume anybody not interested in Survivor wouldn’t pick it up to begin with. If you’re a superfan like me, you’ll love it. If you’re just getting into Survivor and want to learn more, you’ll love it but…there’s some spoilers. His expertise really shine through. He really was made for this. So happy for Rob for this accomplishment.

Atria Books provided an early galley for review.

As a Survivor fan (on and off) since the show's first season, I found this to be a wonderful trip down memory lane. Many of the memorable moments and unforgettable contestants are discussed, allowing Cesternino to add an insider's view of someone familiar with the innerworkings of the production. I like that he included details of his own seasons later in the book. Overall, it is a very casual, comfortable read.

A special shout-out to Sam Bond for his illustrations. He does an amazing job capturing the likenesses of the many players on the show over the years. They really add that extra something to the book.

This is soooo good! Like, I’d be voted off the island for reading this instead of helping my tribe good. It’s well written with a lot of things for the superfans without making the casual fans feel dumb or left out.

There was a lot in here that I always suspected but wasn’t quite sure about, casting, edits, and Jeff Probst. Rob tells great stories and I was a little sad that I plowed through it as fast as I did. It’s definitely going to be on my reread shelf.

I recommend this one so highly!!

Wow! I didn’t really know what to expect with this book. I saw it on the Libby app and thought, why not? I can wholeheartedly say that if you are a Survivor fan, this is a MUST read! I’ve been following RHAP coverage for a couple of years now, and oh boy, did I love learning some of the lore! But don’t get it twisted, you don’t have to be an RHAP listener to enjoy this master class of a book. I was enthralled with every page and flew through it quicker than I would have liked. Rob’s love for the game is unmatched, and he deserves all of his success.

This was a fun read, especially if you love Survivor. Rob Cesternino clearly knows the show inside and out, and you can feel how much he enjoys talking about it.

That said, it felt a little surface-level at times. A lot of it is more of a recap of big moments and fan-favorite stuff rather than anything super new or surprising.

Overall, it’s an easy, enjoyable read for fans, but not something that totally blew me away.
