Shinobi Undercover, Vol. 1
Yodaka’s worst nightmare comes true when his job as a Public Safety ninja forces him to go to high school and even worse…talk to people! When it comes to combat, his skills are off the charts. When it comes to social interaction, however, he completely falls apart. But things take an unexpected turn when he discovers that talking to Aoi Mukai, the girl he’s assigned to guard, is surprisingly easy.

Oh, I love this shy, little ninja.
Like, this is WAY better than I was expecting???? The genre is pretty over-saturated with mid stories of powerful kids going undercover as high school students.
But, this is so pleasantly surprising???
Yodaka is an antisocial, pocket-size king. He does NOT want to make friends. He’s so awkward and can’t hold a conversation. He’s a total shy boy.
So, a mission to go undercover as a high school student and act as a secret bodyguard for a classmate is a nightmare. He’s having a bad time—and it’s so funny.
But, WAIT—there’s more.
The girl he’s supposed to guard, Aoi Mukai, is a total klutz. She attracts attention wherever she goes. Further, she’s got a strong sense of justice that compels her to intervene whenever she sees something bad happening. She’s a nightmare client to have to protect—especially for a shy ninja.
It’s incredible.
The situational humor paired with the dynamic, captivating art style makes for such an entertaining reading experience.
I can’t recommend this enough~

This isn't really for me, but it's interesting enough for me to keep reading. I feel like the over the top reactions get old quick and the plot is a bit chaotic and outlandish. It just feels very goofy, but not in the way I like. It's not awful though. I can see why this could be enjoyable for people. It's just not really to my personal tastes. I have the next two books so I'll continue on and see how I feel, but I don't see myself reading further than that.

Solid shonen, but nothing special.

This was so much fun! Classic shonen. This kid’s social awkwardness was instantly relatable for me, and so endearing.

Okay, this book is a lot of fun. I'm sincerely looking forward to reading more.

This is a librarian review. I try to leave notes on books I’m considering for a middle school library and club for others in the school library profession because manga is hardly ever professionally reviewed for us to properly vet before buying.
This new shonen manga is rated for teens (13+, since it doesn’t say ‘older teens’). It has positive professional reviews including from Booklist and School Library Journal. I actually discovered it through one of SLJ’s magazines.
After having read the first volume, I can say that this seems like a great shonen manga for middle school and up. As a librarian and manga club sponsor, I always appreciate when manga steers clear of most of the issues that plague the genre, such as inappropriate innuendo and jokes, scanty clothing, nudity, substance use, and more. This manga seems to be doing well on that front so far. More details below:
Violence:
Standard for shonen with fighting action scenes and some blood when characters take hits, such as blood from the nose or mouth. However, I would say this is on the milder side of violence in the genre, more so than the popular “Spy x Family”. The ninjas in this series do leave ‘bad guy’ bodies in their wake, but they’re just that: sprawled people they’ve taken down with no major depictions of wounds. There’s no copious amounts of blood, no graphic wounds, and you can actually question whether or not they’re dead or just completely knocked out, which is very nice. “Spy x Family” really turned me off on this front (bullet holes in heads and such), so this is a breath of fresh air.
That said, there is one instance in which the protagonist ninja imagines in the heat of the moment striking someone in a panel where it shows the man’s head being chopped clean off, but there’s no blood or gore to it, and it doesn’t actually happen within the story (he stops just before it would happen because it would give away his cover).
Substances:
None so far! No smoking, no drugs, no alcohol. There is one moment where an assailant tries to immobilize a ninja with a syringe disguised as a pen, and the ninja deflects it back at him, but that’s it.
Inappropriate Moments:
Incredibly relieved to say nothing so far. None of the girl characters have been sexualized as typical in the genre. This has me over the moon. There aren’t even any jokes or innuendo in this first volume at least. The only thing that happens that might be construed this way is when, during an attempt to protect his target from a violent bully, a ninja knocks another student to the ground with a new split in his jeans so that you can see boxers, but no inappropriate jokes are made; the bully simply leaves with his friends, embarrassed.
Swearing:
This is the one you can never get away from. That said, it’s still much milder with small moments of “dammit,” “what the hell,” “You pieces of…(implied word)”.
Other Notes:
For some final notes, I will say I actually enjoyed reading this! I typically flip through series bored and trying to get through quickly because I’m not really personally invested, but while previewing this one, I truly enjoyed the plot. It had nice pacing as well. I’m really hoping the following volumes keep up the trend of keeping things pretty clean in terms of shonen manga (did we really need the an arc with the red light district and courtesans in Demon Slayer? Jeez.), especially since it’s implied by SLJ’s review that romance may come into play later.
And last but not least, I appreciated the moral messages within the story. Ninjas are portrayed as being part of a government-run security program aimed at protecting people—from their high profile assignments to the general public. Our particular ninja protagonist even rebukes a rogue, defector ninja for abandoning his job and duty to protect people, while commending another ninja colleague for risking herself to protect an innocent classmate from being killed. Great positive message akin to Marvel’s “with great power comes great responsibility” line.

🥷 Ninjas, vida escolar y una misión bastante incómoda: Shinobi Undercover ✨
📖 Título original: Shinobigoto (しのびごと).
✍️ Autores: Ippon Takegushi y Santa Mitarashi.
👥 Demografía: Shonen.
🎭 Géneros: acción, misterio, vida escolar.
📚 Formato: rústica de tapa blanda con sobrecubierta.
🔢 Estado: En publicación 1/9x volúmenes. Serie abierta.
🏷️ Editorial: Norma Editorial.

I really like the contrast between the normal daily life and the protection that has to stay low-key. It strongly reminded me—and for good reason—of Honeko Akabane's Bodyguards.
I also like the detail of their eyes and expressions changing when they get serious about fighting. The first time things got real, it was actually quite unexpected.
As soon as Miyake entered the story, I knew right away he was an enemy ninja.
The pacing was solid, the art was good. I really enjoyed it.
🇫🇷

Review of advance copy received from Edelweiss+
Yodaka is a young top ninja. He’s great at his job, but has no social skills. He can’t really talk to anyone for being so shy. So his new assignment is the worst for him. He has to infiltrate a high school to protect a first year school girl.
Aoi Mukai is a bit of an oddball, clumsy and doing her own thing. She’s been protected by ninjas all her life in secret, but we don’t learn why. But there are enemies everywhere in school and out. And Yodaka isn’t the only ninja protecting her either. There are two who have been assigned to become her best friend and boyfriend to be. But she instantly likes Yodaka, and becomes his friend instead, much to everyone’s surprise.
This was a good start to a series. Lot of action and fun bits. Yodaka starts out as a total shut-in, but realises to his surprise that he’s starting to like school. I’d read more. Art was good.
I received a free copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

I had a good time with this one, Yodaka is a government sanctioned ninja who is tasked with posing as a high school student in order to protect someone from the shadows. Shenanigans ensue and our MC ends up getting more involved than he planned.
Some solid characters are introduced and I like Yodaka as a MC, he can be pretty funny especially when talking with his handler.
The artwork accentuates the humor and the action too, really easy on the eyes. I loved the sense of speed that the fight scenes convey, when these ninjas fight they fight HARD and yet can stop on a dime when the threat of discovery is near.
Overall, I recommend. Curious to see how volume 2 pans out.

Fun new series! What's deadlier - ninja assassins or social anxiety? A cute and corny kid is about to find out when he's assigned to protect a klutzy heiress. He'll have to overcome rogue Shinobi and invitations to karaoke if he wants to keep her safe. We all just want to fit in - even when we're working undercover. I like how the faceless operator guiding him through the mission is like that voice in your head saying, "What are you so worried about? Just do it." Sticking around for the next one!

Yodaka is happy in his role as a ninja with the Public Safely force. He works undercover and never has to interact with anyone. For someone as shy and awkward as he is, it is the perfect job. But his new role will be quite a stretch. He has been assigned as bodyguard to a girl in High School. He will have to attend school with her and interact with actual people! Things get even more tricky when his charge ignores the ninjas planted to be her "boyfriend" and "best friend" and gloms onto him instead. Can he manage the toughest assignment of all? To be her friend. Super cute.

This manga has a good story. I want to keep continuing on reading more on how far it goes. Our male character has two different lives which is a shinobi and school. As he is trying to live a normal life as a school kid. He finds himself stuck as an undercover shinobi while trying to hid that part of his identity. He even in counters enemies in school.
Thank you to NetGalley, Ippon Takegushi, VIZ Media for the complimentary ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for this review.

Yodaka is a public safety ninja who is really good at ninja-ing, but suffers from extreme social anxiety. Unfortunately for him, the high school girl he's assigned to protect adopts him as her friend and he must...gulp...talk to people. And go to karaoke. And stop assassins but honestly that part doesn't bother him.
Super cute and it was nice to see Yodoka learning to make friends with his fellow ninjas.
Thank you to NetGalley and Viz Media for the review copy.

I did not enjoy this. Main character Yodaka's social anxiety is over the top. I guess it's supposed to be funny that the greatest (teenage) ninja shakes and stutters when anyone speaks to him, but it's not a particularly clever joke. I also could have done with a scrap of explanation for why this plot is even happening. Why are the greatest (teenage) ninjas protecting one particular teenage girl, and why must she be kept entirely oblivious to their protection? This is probably going to be some kind of long, drawn out mystery, but I can't imagine any payoff that will be worth waiting even a few pages, much less for chapters and chapters on end.

I don't hate this but I don't love it. My reasons:
+ I like the art style.
+ I like SOME of the characters.
- Operator (or wtv his name was) just kept talking even when there was no reason to. It felt like a lot of what he was saying was trying to tell me how I should feel about some things.
- I think its a little messed up that her whole life is basically fake.
- the small twist was very easy to guess.
- I found myself continuously checking to see if I was almost done.

This is sooo my taste.
It's something between Assassination Classroom and Kindergarten Wars. But I think it was better.
Yodaka is so cute, and I found his personality so funny. I liked his relationship with Aoi and the other ninja. It's definitely a series that I will continue reading. The length was perfect. I liked the way we moved through the story and how it progressed.
Can't wait to read more.
