Goodnight, sleep tightdon’t let the dragons bite.

(Eli tries to hide it. Ambrose knows he bought the ring months ago.)

But when an angry dragon trapped beneath the city demands help through Ambrose’s dreams, he realizes his adventure isn’t yet finished.

He quickly concocts a shrink the dragon with a potion and smuggle it to safety before the city discovers its presence. To retrieve the needed ingredients, however, he must take a cue from his customers…and go on a quest himself.

While Ambrose, Eli, and friends fumble through heroics abroad, his apprentice Nat takes control of the shop. Q&A

Where do you get your ideas for your books?

The idea for Stray Spirit came from an active brainstorming session- I knew I wanted to write something for Nanowrimo, but I didn't know what. So I threw together three things I was interested in- bards, caves, and spirit possession- and went from there.

A Rival Most Vial came to me when the phrase "rival potion shops" fell into my head. (And subsequently never left.)

Why did you add drawings to The Stray Spirit?

I wanted to give the book a fairy tale vibe, and because I self-published, I had the freedom to select the artist and the scenes that were drawn. Was it more expensive? Sure. Was it worth it? Yes.

For A Rival Most Vial: why potion shops?

Because my nerdy little D&D heart loves them. I'm obsessed with the hidden lives of NPCs in D&D campaigns, and A Rival Most Vial is absolutely a tribute to that.

And finally: what's next?

Keep an eye out for two more books in the Lutesong Series, three books and two novellas in the Side Quest Row series, and a stand-alone tentatively titled The Bread Witch!

I should start by saying that I received this book as an ARC, and I’m incredibly happy I had the opportunity to be one of the readers, especially since I loved the first two books! That said, this review will not be influenced by that fact. It will remain spoiler free, though I’ll touch on a few later minor plot points in vague detail.

I really enjoyed this book! The writing style and overall vibe felt very consistent with the first two, and the characters all also still felt in character. As a whole, it was a fantastic sequel!

I also really liked the plot, even if some elements felt a bit convenient at times; for example, certain information that you’d expect the main characters to already know ends up being a surprise for them. Still, the pacing was great, and I loved the worldbuilding. Maybe it’s because I haven’t played a lot of DnD, but the forest felt like such a unique and fascinating setting, and of course, The Scar was as incredible as ever.

One of my favourite aspects of this book was Nat. I already liked her in the last book, but it was such a treat to read from her perspective. Her flaws felt very believable and true to her character given everything from the last book. I also really enjoyed her relationships with the other apprentices, like the romance was really good, but I honestly appreciated the deep sense of friendship between them even more. To be fair the found-family dynamic from the entire street was just amazing! But the relationship that I liked most in this book (aside from maybe Ambrose and Eli) was between Ambrose and Nat. I’m such a sucker for a good mentor–mentee relationship, and theirs perfectly captured everything I love about that trope.

As for Ambrose and Eli; they were adorable once again! I loved the cozy, domestic vibe between them. I also really appreciated that the conflict in this book (as well as in the second) didn’t come from their relationship. So many sequels rely on breaking couples up or manufacturing drama through miscommunication. I'm so happy that this series doesn't do that as I hate that part of sequels.

And of course, I have to mention the dragon, he was so much fun! I loved every scene he was in and really enjoyed how his relationship with Ambrose and how it developed over the course of the story.

If you enjoyed the first two books, I would 100% recommend picking this one up!

Magic, Mayhem, and a Dragon Who Needs Saving

Rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Goodnight, sleep tight, don't let the dragons bite takes on a whole new meaning when said dragon is literally invading your dreams and begging for rescue! 🐉

R.K. Ashwick has delivered a finale that somehow manages to be cozy and thrilling, intimate and epic, all at once.
After two years of recovery from a traumatic kidnapping, Ambrose Beake just wants to live his quiet life. He runs his potion shop, trains his apprentice Nat, and daydreams about when Eli will finally use that engagement ring he thinks he is hiding so well.
Spoiler: Ambrose noticed months ago, and it is adorable.

The Setup:
When Fio, a dragon trapped beneath the city of Scar, reaches out through Ambrose's dreams in desperation, our reluctant hero cannot ignore the call. His solution? Concoct a shrinking potion and smuggle Fio to safety before anyone discovers the dragon's existence.
Simple enough, except gathering the ingredients requires Ambrose to do something completely outside his comfort zone: go on an actual quest.

Dual Narratives Done Right:
The brilliance of this story lies in how Ashwick weaves together two threads. Ambrose, Eli, and their friends (the wonderful Rosemond Street gang: Sherry, Grim, Banneker, and Rory) adventure abroad searching for potion ingredients. Meanwhile, back at the shop, Nat tries desperately to manage everything while keeping multiple secrets. When she, Zuri, and Luka attempt a magical demonstration for Mayor Rune, things go catastrophically wrong 🔥, and suddenly Fio's life hangs in the balance.

Characters You Will Root For:
Ambrose is beautifully complex. He is introverted, thoughtful, still healing from past trauma, yet brave when it counts.
Eli brings out his adventurous side while respecting his boundaries. Their relationship feels genuine, built on mutual respect and real affection. The tension around Eli's proposal and Ambrose's hidden feelings about marriage adds emotional stakes that complement rather than overshadow the main plot.
Nat's storyline is equally compelling. Watching her juggle shop responsibilities, navigate her feelings for another apprentice, and try to protect Fio while the adults are away gave me all the feelings. Her mistakes feel realistic, and her growth is satisfying.

The Villains and the Stakes:
Mayor Rune and Ms. Mila with her Balistae thugs create real danger. These are not cartoon villains but people with power who view Fio as a threat to be eliminated. The race against time as the gang rushes back to save Fio had me turning pages frantically, desperate to know if they would arrive before tragedy struck.

What Makes This Special:
This is a book about found family and community.
The Rosemond Street gang is not just a group of adventurers but people who have built something worth protecting together. The potion shop serves as a gathering place, a symbol of the life Ambrose has created for himself despite everything he has endured.
Ashwick handles trauma recovery with sensitivity. Ambrose's journey is not about getting over what happened but learning to live fully despite it. His relationship with Eli shows how love can be both a comfort and a challenge, pushing us to be braver than we think we can be 💕

The Magic System:
The potion making is delightful! It feels grounded and practical, with real consequences and limitations. Magic here is not just about power but knowledge, creativity, and sometimes improvisation when things go wrong (which they frequently do, in the best possible ways).

Why You Should Read This:
If you love fantasy that prioritizes character relationships alongside adventure, if you appreciate queer romance that feels organic and sweet, if you want dragons, potions, found family and genuine stakes, this book delivers. The ending tied together every thread beautifully while still giving me those satisfying emotional payoffs I craved.

Will Fio survive? Will Eli ever work up the nerve to propose? Will Ambrose finally reveal his secret? Does Rosemond Street get its happy ending? Read it and find out. You will not regret it.

Final Verdict:
Ashwick has created something truly special here. A finale that honors everything that came before while standing firmly on its own.

Splendid from start to finish! ✨

Thank you, R.K. Ashwick, for the gifted copy of this book. I was happy to leave my honest opinion.

I was given an ARC copy of this book but have also purchased my own copy.

We rejoin Rosemond Street two years after the events of the last book for another rescue mission. This time to save a dragon!

Our usual cast of Rosemond Street merchants is expanded with three new apprentices: Nat, Luka, and Zuri. Nat, having grown up in Aphos, has a hard time making friends and trusting in the power of friendship. Throughout the story we get to see her grow into the love and acceptance of her friends and found family.

I was very pleased with how much personality the author was able to give the Dragon character. They start off seeming cold but as they get familiar with the characters we get glimpses of child-like wonder, cat like behaviors, and even deeper character qualities that I'll leave you to discover on your own.

This entire series has been delightful. I read every book in the series one after the other, incredibly lucky to find myself reading them right as the last book in the series was released.

ARC provided by R.K. Ashwick for an honest review.

To understand how I feel about A Draught for a Dragon (the third book in the Side Quest Row series), first you have to understand how I feel about the other two books.

Book 1: A Rival most Vial: This was an excellent little enemies-to-lovers romance with some found family and not a whole lot else going on--which is the whole point of cozy fantasy. It is absolutely perfect just as it is.

Book 2: A Captured Cauldron: This was an interesting direction to take for the sequel. This book is about one of the main characters getting kidnapped and the other character trying (and often failing) to rescue him. Not a ton of character development, and a very different plot direction from what I think of as cozy fantasy. While this book is fine, I have no real issues with it, it didn't give me any emotions that the first book did. Now that I have read the third book, I really think this second book was just a plot device to get us to the dragon.

Book 3: A Draught for a Dragon: The whole reason I am writing this and you are (hopefully still) reading this review. The whole book is centered around rescuing a dragon. Very simple, but oh, how do I explain the emotions that this book gave me. While the first book was lovely with the romance, this book is so much more about the found family aspect and the realization, acceptance, and healing from childhood trauma. The characters all coming together to help save something as big and dangerous as a dragon is one lovely thing, but I absolutely lost it at the end when Ambrose was connecting with the dragon and defending the dragon's right to exist. This book is moving, silly, ridiculous, heartfelt, and just an absolutely delightful read. Highly recommend.

I received an ARC from the author, and this is my unbiased review.

It was so fun to be back in this world with the Rosemond Street gang! They are a delightful group of friends that make up the best found family, and their adventures and mishaps kept me entertained. I am sorry to see this series end, yet the author did a great job of wrapping it up with plenty of time spent with these characters that felt like old friends.

This is the third in a continuing series of books, so you must read them in order.

A strong third entry in this sweet queer and cozy fantasy romance series. I love Ambrose and Eli and their ever expanding found family of Rosemond Street! The twists and turns on the plot were predictable but enjoyable to read nonetheless. And this one has a wonderful dragon! Highly recommend!

I received this as an ARC and gladly share this review.

I have thoroughly enjoyed all the adventures of Rosemond Street, from the very first day when the others were speculating with Ambrose about the new shop across the street. A Draught for a Dragon feels like the perfect HEA for Ambrose and Eli.

Despite the fact that all of the main characters would be NPCs in any ordinary video game, they have hero-level adventures that don't quite go as smoothly as planned (because what quest ever does?). We're also introduced to the next generation of Rosemond Street - the apprentices Nat, Luka, and Zuri. Along the way, Ambrose learns that family is more than just people related to you, and sometimes being brave means doing the right thing, even if it's difficult and terrifying.

If you want a cozy adventure, with found family and unlikely heroes, this is a perfect series, and A Draught for a Dragon is the perfect capstone.

Prefacing this review by saying I was lucky enough to receive a free advanced copy of this book but my opinions are 100% my own and I will definitely be buying my own physical copy on release day :D

The end of the side quest row series and the dudes of brew. This was such a perfect ending and a perfect send off for Rosemund St. I honestly enjoyed every minute of it.

There’s so much to love about this series and this book in particular. I absolutely love R.K Ashwick’s writing style for one. It’s such a great blend of emotional, tender moments and hilarious shenanigans. Having the whole or Rosemund St involved for one final adventure was such a good choice and so much fun.

Without giving too much away I felt like this book was such a perfect way to wrap up the story and character arcs that built through the first two books and I think we leave all the characters in such a satisfying place by the end. And speaking of the end it had me absolutely balling at 2am. I’m so sad to be saying goodbye to this series but I honestly can’t recommend it enough. I could go on for days about the humorous writing, the beautiful found family, the diversity, the emotional growth.

It was another great blend between a cozy story and a more action focused adventure with poor Ambrose once again being dragged out of his comfort zone and into another mess. For a very good cause of course. It was so much fun getting Nat’s POV as well for this one, watching the apprentices try to hold down the fort while the rest of the street was off chasing mushrooms. One thing I was pleasantly surprised by was how much I adored Fio. His character, his mannerisms and his evolving relationship with Ambrose was so incredibly endearing and I honestly didn’t expect it.

Overall it was another slam dunk. Between this and the first book I honestly can’t decide which is my favourite but I highly recommend the whole series. It’ll leave you warm and fuzzy and in the case of this final one, very emotional.

I am so grateful to be counted amongst the ARC team for this final installment of the Side Quest Row series! When I first started the series I absolutely fell in love with the chatacters and their world. This emotional ending had me in tears (happy ones) and it was such a joyful and fitting conclusion to their adventures!

Two years after his rescue from Aphos, Ambrose has begun having dreams of the dragon they had imprisoned, Fio. Except Fio is awakening and he is angry about being trapped for so many years. Now the Rosemond Street gang must come together to figure out a way to bust him out without alerting Aphos or the rest of the Scar. To do so, they must undertake a perilous quest for a special mushroom only found in the dangerous Driftwood Forest, leaving their apprentices in charge of their shops.

Ambrose was always my favorite character in the trilogy and it was so wonderful to get to see him connecting to and healing alongside Fio. The parallels between their situations are so poignant but we get to journey with them as their trust and friendship grow and they realize that they had found their perfect family already.

Of course the romance came to a head with Dawna nd Rory planning their wedding, which prompts Eli to propose in his own special way. His understanding of Ambrose’s fears and hesitation about weddings just goes to show how well they have connected and how much they love each other. Seeing them get their happily ever after together had me crying profusely!

The apprentices were so much fun! I loved getting to see Nat thrive and grow into her own, accepting her place amongst the family, along with her growing affections for Luka.

Overall book three was full of fun adventure, emotional catharsis, familial affection, and all types of new magical creatures. For those who enjoy cozy fabtasy, or even just magical adventures, the Side Quest Row series is a must!

ARC provided by R.K. Ashwick for an honest review.

This third and final installment in the Side Quest Row books was just as fun and delightful as the first two. I just adore Eli and Ambrose, and Nat was a great addition to the cast of characters. The story was a lot of fun to read with lots of action, potion making and adventures.

Eli and Ambrose are such fun characters and I just love their relationship. They are so sweet with each other and very attuned to each other. Both are ready to take their relationship to the next level, marriage, but they are just such sweet and bumbling fools when it comes to actually proposing to each other.

Nat’s point of view was a nice addition to this story. I really enjoyed her and the other apprentices and how they worked together. Things didn’t always turn out well though, but they tried to help. Nat and Luka were very sweet together and I really enjoyed their romance.

Fio, the dragon, really stole the show in this book. I just adored him. He was funny in an drole kind of way, and I loved how he eventually was able to trust Ambrose. For such a fearsome looking creature, he really was just such a sweet and adorable dragon.

The story was a lot of fun. I loved all of the adventures they had in the Driftwood and the many creatures they encountered were quite original and interesting. There were also some fun humans there too. Everyone from Rosemond Street went on the adventure and helped in their own ways. It was nice to see the whole gang supporting each other and help with Fio’s release.

If you enjoyed the first two books in this series, then this is a must read. You could read this one without having read the other two but I wouldn’t recommend it. It is a great cozy fantasy, set in a very interesting world and has a great cast of characters. The romances are a lot of fun as well.

I have been following the Side Quest Row series since the first book as an ARC, and I have LOVED all of it. Thank you so much for the ride, R.K.

I loved this so much that I couldn’t just highlight my favorite phrases as usual because I would end up highlighting the whole book. Which is a mood, actually. I missed them so, so much… for it to have gone by so quickly, sigh.

I’m not gonna lie, the time skip surprised me a lot, but it fit nicely. And seeing a more mature Nat following her newfound wishes filled my chest with warmth. I knew Luca would be my new favorite, though Zuri was also a nice addition.

Everything was so fun, but I got so mad that we couldn’t be at Dawn’s event. I adored her and Rory’s dynamic, and the reminder of how long Ambrose and Eli have actually been together blew my mind.

We got young shenanigans, old shenanigans (there will always be, with Banneker present), new places, and new adventures. WE GOT A DRAGON! And I’m SO HAPPY with that resolution, it couldn’t have been any other way.

The whole book couldn’t have been any other way.

I’m still experiencing so many emotions, and I couldn’t make this any larger without adding spoilers, so I’m going to enjoy my feelings with myself. I’m sad it ended, but the ending gave me so much peace, the sadness disappeared.

Rosemond Street will always find a way, and will stay in good hands, they got good kids.

The series had made me so happy throughout all the reading, I can’t wish a book anything better than what this series gifted me.

Well, I can't actually believe that this is the last book in the Rosemond Street series. I've loved hearing about Ambrose, Eli, Dawn and the rest of the merchants as well as learning more about Nat, Zuri and Luka, the apprentices. This book takes place a few years after Eli rescued Ambrose from Aphos and Madam Mila.

In this book, Ambrose finds he dreams about Fio, the dragon in the catacombs. The Aphos have been draining all the acid from the dragon while he sleeps, but he's beginning to wake and the Aphos decide they don't need him anymore and begin to block up his cave. Ambrose and his friends then plan how to help, which results in Ambrose, Eli and 4 of their friends going on a quest to find the ingredients needed, leaving the running of their shops to the apprentices. Of course, trouble ensues; far more than any of them thought possible. Ambrose rises to each challenge which take him further out of his comfort zone, much to Eli's amusement. There are the usual plans for spells in the middle of the book, which are always great to see.

RK Ashwick has grown each character throughout the series and, as much as I'm sorry to see it end, it's been good to see their development. I do suggest reading the books in order, so you get a feeling for the world, it will make more sense if you do.

I received an ARC from the author, all views are my own.

It is always hard to say goodbye to a much-loved series, but R.K. Ashwick managed to put a smile on my face at the conclusion of the final book, A Draught for a Dragon. After his harrowing experiences in the previous book, Ambrose has gained confidence in his job and enjoys mentoring his apprentice. His boyfriend, Eli, is still adventuring but wants to propose to Ambrose. Eli puts his skills to the test when Ambrose needs to make a quest for a potion ingredient. The quest winds up including many of Ambrose and Eli’s friends. This allowed us to see where several secondary characters had wound up in their own lives, helping to leave no loose ends in the conclusion. It was fun to once more experience the comradery among this unlikely group of friends. And there is a whole other plotline that occurs at the same time as the quest, this one involving the apprentices. They too have grown in the two years since the previous book. The author brings all of the characters to vivid life, making us want only good things for them. And unlike some series, everything feels complete by the final page. Now I am looking forward to what the author will undertake next. I received a free advance review copy of the book, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

A Draught for a Dragon is the third and final book in the cozy fantasy series Side Quest Row. With a giant dragon still trapped underground linked to Ambrose’s dreams, he must find way to free him. So Ambrose, Eli, and the rest of their merchant friends decide to go on a quest to collect rare ingredients to make a shrinking potion for the dragon. But it’s the busiest time of the year, so they leave Nat and the other apprentices in charge of their stores. What could possibly go wrong with both parts of the plan?

This was another fun and charming entry into the series. This time, it rides right between a cozy and a low stakes fantasy, delivering just enough stakes to satisfy the fantasy reader in me. I just loved the vibe and the messy chaotic dynamic of the entire Rosemund crew going on an ill-advised adventure completely over and underprepared. Everything was just hilariously adorable and endearing. Surprisingly, I also liked Nat’s addition as the third PoV character which did not feel like it took attention away from Ambrose and Eli. Then the ending scene was just perfection in closing out the central romance between Ambrose and Eli, and there was even some moistness around my eyes.

A Draught for a Dragon closes out the Side Quest Row trilogy with the same charm and coziness that drew me in from the first book.

*Thank you to the author for the eARC!

"The more the merrier. That's what they say about crimes."

Well, the same can be said about each additional cast member of this series. I don't know how the author does so well to make me so attached to each character they write. I laughed, I cried, I put off finishing the book so I could cling to it for just a bit longer. Each book feels like a hug.

I'm so glad that the relationship between our two Dudes of Brew has progressed beautifully instead of constantly throwing in a 'will they, won't they' especially seeing as they were rivals all those pages ago. There is so much else going on and depth of character that they don't have to rely on the trope to carry the story.

I'm put out that there is no other books to await in either series, but that just means it's time for a re-read. I believe that my collection on the shelf will never be left alone long enough to gather dust.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is such a sweet series. I love anything that involves a found family and the shopkeepers of Rosemond Street are a wonderful family. I liked that we went full circle with Ambrose and Eli’s story and I just love how much they support each other.

I loved Fio and my heart hurt for him at times, but I’m glad he also got a happy ending. It took me a little while to warm up to the plot line with the apprentices and our main quest was a little drug out, but otherwise I really liked this book.

What we do for love…
Be it taste-testing new cookie flavors, rescuing dragons from the townspeople, or questing for magic ’shrooms…it takes a village for adults, too!

Fave line (can apply to so many people and so many situations):
‘Why did he need to shrink, or hide, or pretend like he didn’t belong—?’

Now that Rosemond Street is shutting down for good (frowny face), readers should take advantage of discounts as well as the last of Viola’s Caramel Chai Cupcakes.

Rosemond Street always brings me back to the sweetest characters, but A Draught for a Dragon might be my favorite of the three. Yes, because of the dragon. Their quest to help Fio makes for such an exciting and light-hearted adventure story; it was fun to read, and the found-family themes are stronger than ever, which I loved.

I absolutely love this! Each of the books said in this world I keep thinking I’ve hit the peak, and then the next one is even more interesting. I loved the way that the characters split into separate storylines that dovetailed beautifully. And I love the character development. I can’t wait for the next book

how cute, I adore the street's relatively low-stakes shenanigans and the healthy romance that continues to deliver between eli and ambrose. fio is also an absolute darling and deserves only the bestest <3

ending did feel a little rushed; would've appreciated a longer build-up towards that final wedding scene but alas. book 1 is still my favourite of the three

This series is as warm and comforting as a hot mug of tea. This book takes a small leap forward in time, but picks up the threads from book 2 and ties them off nicely. Any lingering questions I had were mostly soothed by happy endings all around.
