Emily spent years forgetting Luke, the boy she loved, the boy who left. He reappears in her coastal Virginia town “to start fresh” with his wife; old feelings flare… and a prickle of dread she can’t name. A cryptic note on her windshield. A shadow at the edge of the lot. A woman vanishes after being seen with Luke.
Everyone says Emily is overreacting. Luke says she’s imagining things. His wife smiles like a blade.
The town feels smaller every day. Doors stick. Phones glitch. Memories don’t line up. Why does Luke know details she’s never told him? Why does his wife always arrive first when something goes wrong?
As messages escalate and secrets claw free, Emily doubts her mind. Is she being watched, or managed? Trapped between the boy she remembers and the man he’s become, she has one uncover the truth before the next “accident.”
She thought she knew him. She thought she knew herself. Then… the night everything changed.
I had the pleasure of receiving this as an e-ARC and will voluntarily will be my honest review. This is a great thriller had me at the edge of my seat.. loved it!!

K. X. Black is without a doubt the King of Similes. His often snarky comparisons are like a symphony in prose. That said, I became emotionally invested in this book. The more I read, the more I despised Luke. Not only was he a despicable human being but he reminded me of some men I've actually met who were exactly like him. The book is, in my opinion, about survival; about rising above personal horrors to thrive once again. Black's character Emily epitomizes the ultimate survivor. We see her grow from meek doormat to warrior and live to tell the tale. This is a nail biter of a read.
This is an excellent psychological thriller. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat, flipping pages as fast as I could read! The plot is intriguing and well developed. Highly recommended!
