How did she grow up? How did she meet her ex-wife? Why is her ex-wife and ex? How does she know Hal, Guy, and John? The answer to these and many other questions finally get an answer in this issue.
I've been enjoying Ewing's Absolute GL, and this issue just took it up another whole notch. Recommended.
While I’ve mostly liked Absolute Green Lantern on a month to month basis, I was also increasingly stymied by the intensely decompressed storyline of Al Ewings opening arc. By the time it finished, I was feeling pretty hard pressed to tell you what it was all about and was lost in a whole bunch of lore I didn’t have any kind of grip on at all. What had begun as sci-fi horror quickly grew into something more esoteric and much less interesting.
Enter issue eight. This one’s all character based, giving us some much-needed background on our lead character a titular Green Lantern, Sojourner Muellin. Ewing gives his star the central focus and it’s all wonderfully rendered in both scripting and artwork, which is both beautifully and at times spicy when it needs to be. We get the full history of Sojourner, from her childhood as her and her father move to Evergreen, to her joining a corrupt police force and truly discovering herself. There’s no real action to speak of, just a completely personal and ultimately human story against which the rest of this series is grounded around. This is the best bit of storytelling this series has seen, and just as I was about to cancel my monthly subscription it convinced me to hang around for at least another arc. I hope we get more stories in this vein, and a little bit less of what’s come before.
best issue so far. oh my god this was so good. i love getting a glimpse into jo’s background and why she is the way she is! i definitely think she should leave her wife for renee…or for me!
We slow things down to give Jo her origin story and I was engaged from start to finish. The pacing and constant referencing to earlier panels was very well done. The drama and events leading to the present day blended so well. I am all aboard for this story to continue and I hope Jo and Cam have some development in future issues.
really enjoyed getting Jo’s backstory for this. this kind of rebooked me on absolute GL after i wasn’t feeling it too much there for a bit. but i am thoroughly intrigued and am glad we got some much needed backstory for her.
ALRIGHT, who was the genius who gave Ewing the name drop as many people as you can challenge, becsuse I need to give them a firm handshake and a thank you, lol. Not only was this name drop as many people central, it was also tell a compelling story and show how the different emotions on the light spectrum weave throughout Jo’s life central. This was just such a good issue covering Jo’s life from when she first moved out of the city to Evergreen, to showing up on her ex-wife’s doorstep with Hal Jordan asking for help. We jump into this issue and the first page immediately lays the groundwork for the inner workings of Jo, showing pivotal moments from her life and the portion of the emotional spectrum they most contribute to, ultimately showing why she is the perfect anomaly lantern. But the issue does follow a linear flow through time, and first impressions…not a fan of her dad. Very much seems like the closed off put God above your true feelings kinda crap and probably why Jo was closeted for so long, I mean he did bring her here. Jo was friends with “Harold” (Hal) since she was a kid growing up in evergreen, until her father’s influence led her to joining the Police Force. There she met Chief Hand, Chief Bill Hand, and as you know Bill is short for William. AKA black hand! Hahaha, if the creepy smile and racism didn’t give it away you should have realized who this was based on the name. Out the door as soon as Jo started was Mark Shaw aka Manhunter in the main continuity. He’s gone through a few names so I loved it when they mentioned he took a private security gig at Hammond and is a bit of a “privateer.” She also met Guy Gardner who really keeps quiet and his head down around the department. And finally who would be the star detective if she was in any other town, Renee Montoya! WOOOO, that’s my girl! They also have a new recruit named Rita, but I didn’t get a last name so I’m not sure who that is. After Mark Shaw’s retirement party Renee and Jo ended up heading out on their own where they discussed getting out of this town. Renee is a smooth MF and she put the moved majorly on Jo and the two shared a kiss, before Jo got too scared and pushed her away, this was not something she ever experienced ot was ready for and Renee left thinking she wasn’t as good a detective as she thought, lol. Didn’t take long for Renee to be out the door without a farewell party. But then we get to see what’s really been going on in this town, Hand is running a protection racket. He is collecting from the likes of Abby Arcane (give me absolute swamp thing NOW), our first look at Alan Scott, and tries to collect from John Stewart but ends up putting him in jail on fake charges when John refuses. This is really what made Jo snap, she could clearly see the abuse and no one else, even Guy who kept his head down, would stand against it. To make things worse Hand is also just dropping full racist dog whistles like “uppity” when describing John. It’s disgusting and Jo was right to quit on the spot. Just to show how much her father sucks, he tried to convince her out of it and even mentioned that the blatant racism was probably just a misunderstanding. Bruh.
Jo left and went straight for coast city. Being the new girl in town isn’t easy but she ran into Cameron Chase pretty quickly while exploring her newly acquired sexual liberation, and Chase was there to show her what’s what pretty quickly. But Jo had to dock her 5/5 stars to a 4/5 due to the smell of an ashtray coming off Chase, lol. Chase is someone who you immediately know moves fast, she works at the DEO which she claims is 99% paperwork…but that’s 1% is why she loves her job. But she is also someone that is constantly tied up in her work, missing movies, showing up late constantly, missing dinner completely. And right when it seemed like it wasn’t working out…Chase proposed to Jo and they moved fast. Of course the wedding vowes included “in the brightest day. In the blackest night,” lol. But Chase being busy at work didn’t change after getting married, and then Jo ran into an old friend…none other than Renee Montoya working in the cold case devision in Coast City. The two grabbed coffee, the discussed evergreen and how Bill Hand died in his sleep of a heart attack, and how Jo is now married to a woman and Renee is actually a really good detective, lol. But like most relationships that aren’t doing too well when a third friendly party enters the life of one of them, the conversation kept going. And coffee turned into drinks into late night hookups and a life filled with lies and regret. Jo finally came clean to Chase in their pretty bland apartment and Chase ended things there on the spot for all the lying. And then just as Jo was hitting the bottom she got a call from the new chief of police of evergreen, Guy Gardner, about her dad’s passing. With no where else to go back to she stayed in Evergreen, met back up with her old friend Hal, and even got an assistant job with John. And then of course the events of the series kicked off, a giant lantern plopped down on the city, and we end this issue in the present day with Jo showing up on the doorstep of her recent ex-wife and DEO extraordinaire asking for help all while glowing bright green. How could chase say no?

I wasn't so sure about our main character Jo before this issue, but My god this issue made me love her as a character so much. it's so rare to see such a interesting flawed real superhero nowadays. and use of emotional spectrum in panels was absolutely fantastic. this was simply a excellent character study issue, plus as a big Renee Montoya fan I was really happy to see her ( well she wasn't used in a positive way but still). This issue just made Absolute green lantern my second favorite Absolute series after wonder woman ( it was at fourth place before), I hope Al Ewing continues writing this deeply.
Lindsay and Ewing are cooking now. There’s such great character work across the Absolute line, but Sojourner Mullein is among the richest and nuanced characters with this issue. Also, let’s see more Absolute the Question!!

This continues to be one of the best of the bunch. Great to see representation and real world issues being included in this story. Some great characters in different roles in this universe too
