This time we find ourselves on an ice-planet. Not that it is really good, but also not really bad which is more than I came to expect. I liked the fighting between the cadets. Tifflor, of course, as a younger version of Rhodan gets on your nerves soon.

We do get some information on the technology.

“RB-013 spoke English. It was a simple routine to program an Arkonide robot for English and other languages. The data bank of his small positronic brain required only five to eight per thousand of its capacity for each language.”

And this is remarkable: “In a civilization which had largely outgrown smoking, Hifield was a rare throwback. To the disgust of the others, he now lit a cigarette.“

That was written in 1962 and the time of action is 1982. A nice example of good SF.

And the action moves forward. One interesting aspect to this story is that although Cadet Tifflor is important to Rhodan’s plans he has no idea why. As far as he knows all he was doing was acting as a courier. However the Springers are convince for some reason he has knowledge of the Planet of Eternal Life. During the course of the story Rhodan manages to rescue all the prisoners save for Tifflor and four companions who previously escaped and have crashed on an alien planet, which is of course a time-honoured tradition in this type of story. Of course we are left with all sorts of threads to be picked up next issue.
As for the other material in this volume a quick rundown. The serial “Edison’s Pursuit to Mars” concludes with the forces of Earth triumphant. For once both short stories where interesting, with the second one being a bit different in concept. Certainly it was one I am not sure I have read before. The Scientifilm World article was on the movie Donovan’s Brain. Not sure if this was a brand new item or reprinted from one of the many magazines Ackerman edited over the years. Interesting anyway. As usual I didn’t bother with the letters, always the weakest part of the volume.
All in all a very good volume. If you like SF adventure. But need something light this might just hit the spot.

I haven't visited Perry and co for a while (I was missing vol. 21) but I decided I could probably figure it out.

The Mutant Master seems to have been taken care of in the volume a missed, as here we have Cadet Tiff and friends on a training mission when they run into the Springers. The Springers seem to be the Perry version of Asimov's tradersin the foundation series... people that broke off from the Archons to roam the Galaxy and control intergalactic commerce.

They like a monoply though, so when the New Power starts trading, they come to investigate. Of course a small fleet of 30 ships is utterly overwhelmed by the Stardust and a couple new ships they perhaps our heroes built themselves.

Tiff and his friends, through a series of events, end up escaping their ship and crash landing on Hoth (well, some sort of Ice Planet.. no Taun Tauns to be seen yet). They steal the shuttle that pursued them but use it to find a cave to hide in instead of getting back to the Stardust for...reasons. since the next story is 'Peril of the Ice Planet' I'm thinking they don't get picked up for... more reasons.

The 'shock shorts' in this one are both passable, and the War of the Worlds sequel is not mercifully finished.. hopefully the next thing they do will be better :)

I was kind of hoping that, based on the name, this new group would look like dogs. No luck on that

Perry Rhodan follows the ORLA XI, the Springer ship holding Julian Tifflor and his companions captive, to the Beta Albireo System. The K-9 can escape the ORLA XI but is severely damaged by an arriving fleet of Springer-warships that Orlgans has called by hypercom for help. Tiff, along with his fellow Space Academy classmates Hifield, Eberhardt, Orsons and Felicita Kergonen, flee the K-9 with a small destroyer space-craft. But that too is attacked and damaged and the fleeing cadets use up almost all the energy of their destroyer escaping from the scene of the battle. They barely manage to land on an icy world of the Beta Albireo System which they name Snowman. There they hide from the scouts of Orlgans. Orlgans intends to capture Tiff on the ice-world for himself in order to obtain information about the location of the World Of Eternal Life that he thinks Tiff knows. Thus, he hurries to Snowman in order to begin the search for Tifflor. Perry Rhodan lets him do so and remains in a standoff position with his three ships, the STARDUST II, the TERRA, and the SOLAR SYSTEM, several light years from the Beta Albireo System. Rhodan hopes that Tifflor, once captured, will be able to find out more about the enemy and then be freed.
