She was born to burn the world. He was forged to stop her.
Allara has always known that danger doesn’t just hide in shadows—sometimes it sits on thrones, and sometimes it shares your blood. When she’s captured by Kastor, commander of the rebels sworn to end her bloodline, she expects cruelty or death. She doesn’t expect him.
Kastor is unyielding, relentless, and bound by duty… yet the more time Allara spends with the rebels, the more he becomes the one steady hand guiding her through the fire. And the closer he gets, the harder it becomes to remember he is her enemy.
Tavro is breaking under a curse tied to her family’s sins. Allara carries the power to end it—but doing so will force her to face the past that destroyed her mother… and the man who might destroy her heart.
To save Tavro, she must confront the legacy that tried to erase her. To survive it, she may need the very enemy who stole her freedom
ARC review: this book has dragons, magic, a curse, evil queen. Allara (FMC) has a traumatised yet strong personality, she has been through so much. Kastor (MMC) is broody and protective. The FMC has 2 dragon bonds and those dragons will do anything thing for her. There is romantic tension between FMC and MMC. The goal is to break the curse and obliterate the throne.
Allara is a princess on the run. From her ruthless grandmother’s throne, her family’s bloody legacy, and the dangerous magic she carries in her blood. When her escape goes awry, she’s captured by a rebel faction sworn to destroy her line, led by Kastor, a hardened commander shaped by loss and duty. Expecting cruelty or execution, Allara instead finds herself navigating a fragile, uneasy alliance as rebellion, curses, and buried truths collide. As Tavro’s curse worsens, Allara is forced to confront who she is, what she can become, and what she is willing to do to survive.
One of this book’s greatest strengths is its atmosphere. The author has an exceptional grasp on setting, imbuing each location with its own weight and personality. Whether it’s a bedroom full of bad memories or an ancient mountain steeped in history, the environments feel vivid and emotionally charged, almost functioning as characters in their own right. The dragons are also used thoughtfully: powerful and dangerous, yet capable of tenderness in a way that deepens Allara’s arc rather than softening their impact. The writing consistently captures ambiance with a visceral clarity that made the world feel fully realized from the first page.
The romance between Allara and Kastor is another standout, unfolding at a measured, believable pace. Kastor’s reserved, duty-bound nature is well justified by his grief and past losses, making his quieter, more human moments especially effective. I also appreciated how Allara’s relationship with her magic is intertwined with her trauma, handled with nuance rather than melodrama. The violence strikes a careful balance, never sanitized, but never gratuitous either. This was a compelling, emotionally grounded romantasy that left me eager to read more. Many thanks to the author for this ARC. This is my honest review.
If you're a fantasy fan, DROP EVERYTHING and add The Line of Ash by L.C. Browning to your reading list immediately. This book is an absolute masterpiece that deserves all the hype and more.Let me put it this way: imagine taking the political intrigue and complexity of Game of Thrones, blending it with the dragon-rider intensity of The Empyrean Series, and adding a splash of the heart and wonder from How to Train Your Dragon. The result? Pure magic. That's exactly what Browning has crafted here, and I'm still reeling from it.The worldbuilding is phenomenal. Browning's descriptive prowess is unmatched, during the butterfly scenes, I could practically see them fluttering off the pages. Every detail is so vivid and immersive that you're not just reading the story; you're living it alongside the characters.Speaking of characters, Allara's journey is everything. Watching her develop and grow throughout the book was an emotional rollercoaster that culminated in that EPIC final scene. I won't spoil anything, but just know that the payoff is absolutely worth it.And that final chapter "Where it all started" absolutely wrecked me in the best way possible. I closed this book with tears streaming down my face, completely devastated and yet completely satisfied. It's rare to find a book that can deliver such an emotional gut punch while still leaving you desperate for more. The cover is stunning, but don't let that be the only reason you pick this up. The story inside is what will keep you glued to the pages until the very end. The Line of Ash is a must-read for any fantasy lover, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
L.C. Browning isn't playing, lovelies. She drops us straight into the thick of it in chapter one with Allara and Kastor, which I loved! We learn the back story of the characters and world building as we read. And we don't have to wait to meet the dragons! FYI, Aurelith and Elyphora are everything. 🙌
I could feel the emotion, heart, and soul that L.C. put into every word. We follow Allara on her journey to trust others and herself while overcoming so much trauma to save her land. The butterflies.. 🥹 I could FEEL what she felt while reading. And that is what makes a fantastic read.
I was lucky enough to get an ARC from the author. This was a decent story it just felt a little jumbled, like there should have been a story before this one. The idea is very good and I liked the way it went I just felt like some backstory is needed.
I was lucky enough to receive this as an ARC read and what a thrilling book this was. I was hooked from the first chapter! Dragons, a curse, cages, witty banter from the dragons and a love interest thrown in there. I was not ready for this book to end. I want more of Allara and Kastor!
Thank you to the author for allowing this advanced read.
This is a romantic fantasy. The book is about 340 pages.
It was definitely advanced read ready. It is publish ready in my opinion.
The author did issue an updated version when I was halfway through it as some polishing had been done. I didn't find anything wrong with the first half that I read of the first released advanced read copy other than one sentence I didn't quite understand. it remained in the second copy so it's apparently not something that needed correction.
There are some mild spoilers included below:
Almost everything worked:
– Succinct storytelling – Compelling female main character – Compelling plot – Band of found family – dragons with actual personality – Action and adventure – Compelling and excellent writing
What mildly didn't work:
– While the MMC was compelling, I didn't really feel that I knew him that well. – It almost feels as if you're supposed to know this world more than you do, understand some of the rules of magic, and the world building. It's explained enough, but at the same time I felt that I was missing something.
Comment:
The spice is not closed doors, but it's not explicit – descriptive either. If you're looking for fantasy romance or spice, this is not the story for you. This is a romantic fantasy. It's not particularly romantic, but the developing attraction and support between the characters builds throughout the book is compelling and satisfying.
What I really liked and really didn't like:
I liked that it didn't have trials. It wasn't that kind of fantasy. Trials and quests get rather tiresome in every fantasy book you pick up. Yes I know that's part of the genre. It's refreshing not to have it sometimes.
It does have training. The physical fighting part made sense, but I didn't understand how the non-magic MMC became her magic mentor as well. But it was written succinctly without a lot of suffering or fanfare.
I didn't understand the scene where she just basically let someone walk up and capture her without fighting back.
I love a cold opening when you're thrown into the story, into action. A+, I also loved the cold opening leading right into a rescue/escape and snarky dragon dialogue.
I don't particularly like vaguing up or hinting at sex. Either write it or don't. I appreciate if someone isn't comfortable writing sex scenes, but don't start a sex scene and get poetic about it instead of explicit.
I don't particularly like vaguing up abuse whether physical, mental, or sexual. Name it. Or don't include it.
My opinion is if as a writer one can write fairly explicit murder/battle scenes and even joke about the dragons eating people, one does not to vague up spice or abuse.
This is a five star read as I weighted the whole of the structure and storytelling more heavily than what I felt was missing or I didn't like.

The Line of Ash by L.C. Browning is the kind of fantasy that grabs you from page one and refuses to let go. I tore through this book in a day and a half, completely swept up in its danger, magic, and emotional depth. If the high-stakes fantasy of Fourth Wing had a baby with the fierce, resilient FMC energy of Throne of Glass, this would be it.
Allara is a standout heroine, strong not because she’s unbreakable, but because she keeps fighting despite her trauma. I loved that her inner strength is earned and evolving, not handed to her. The slow, believable trust built between her and Kastor is one of the book’s greatest strengths. Their dynamic is layered with tension, uncertainty, and restraint, making every interaction feel charged and meaningful without overpowering the story.
The worldbuilding is rich and immersive, filled with everything fantasy lovers crave: dragons, rebellion, magic, curses, even an evil queen, and a found family that feels truly earned. The magic system feels fresh and vibrant, and the supporting characters bring humor, heart, and purpose. They matter to the story rather than simply existing around it. I especially loved how the found-family dynamic becomes deeply woven into both the FMC and MMC’s journey.
As a first book in a series, The Line of Ash does carry the weight of worldbuilding and setup, but it still delivers a satisfying conclusion while clearly setting the stage for what’s to come. The story balances action, emotion, and just enough romance to ground the stakes, leaving me fully invested in this broken world and eager for the next installment.
This book is fast-paced, emotional, and packed with classic fantasy elements done right, it is perfect for readers who love runaway royals, reluctant heroes, rebellion, dragons, and slow-burn tension in a beautifully dangerous world.
Thank you to L.C. Browning for the opportunity to read this early. I’ll absolutely be continuing the series. 🖤🐉
This fantasy adventure opens in the thick of danger, setting the tone for a gripping tale of rebellion, magic, and self-discovery. Allara, the FMC, is a princess on the run—not only from her ruthless grandmother, the ruling queen, but also from the painful truth of who she is and the magic she carries. Her escape from the castle and the crown’s oppressive rule goes sideways when she’s captured by a rebel group led by Kastor, a hardened MMC still reeling from the death of his sister. The story wastes no time, throwing readers straight into tension, uncertainty, and high stakes. As Allara struggles to survive, she must also confront the scars of her past and the volatile power within her. Her emotional growth is one of the book’s shining points; watching her slowly gain control over her abilities—and her future—is deeply satisfying. The story world is rich with elements fantasy lovers crave: an evil queen pulling strings from the shadows, the simmering threat and wonder of magic, the presence of dragons, and just the right amount of romance to balance the danger. Allara and Kastor’s dynamic is layered, built on uncertainty, distrust, and a spark of something more. Supporting characters truly enhance the journey, offering humor, heart, tension, and purpose rather than simply filling space. Their arcs contribute meaningfully to both character development and plot. One of the greatest strengths of the book is its resolution. The author closes every storyline with care, ensuring that no threads are left dangling and leaving readers deeply satisfied when the journey ends. Fast-paced, emotional, and filled with fantastical flair, this story is perfect for readers who love runaway royals, reluctant heroes, found-family rebellion, and a dash of romance set against a beautifully dangerous world.
The best thing about this book is the dragons!!! They are amazing. And the humor right off the bat had me drawn into the story. I need more!
This book starts off with our MFC who is kinda kidnapped and gets free only to become part of the rebels. There is some negative things with her family (who are king and queen). We have our MMC who is a golden retriever in all ways. As the story progresses, you learn more why our MFC doesn’t trust. She gets kidnapped back to the crown and you find out more about what dear old king and queen have done to her. The story progresses and there is a battle toward the end. I wish this would have been more emotional during those last few moments in the castle but it was still a great book. I do wanna know what happened with a certain dragon.
Also there isn’t really on scene/page spice besides some hands roaming and kissing. Most spice is off page so if you’re expecting spicy, don’t. But it’s perfect the way it’s written in the book. Especially with our MFC. I’ll just leave that there
Also there are some areas I would love to have more answers, like the issues with the local area, more about why the Queen/king are the way they are. I would love a prequel and more books. Here is to the dragon empire!
I want more of these dragons and our MMC/MFC. Sassy dragons, a lovable MMC and a MFC who isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty. I am thankful I was able to receive an early copy as I will have to have a shelf trophy of the SE.
Received the ARC from the author. This is my honest review. 3.75 ⭐️ Things I liked: When it comes to fantasy books being fast-paced, I am all for it! LCB starts the story with an intensity that had me instantly going, woah whats going on! I was drawn in, and intrigued by the unique magic the FMC wields, butterflies that can swarm and turn into fire disc's!? That's new! The witty and feisty dragons had me cackling! From wanting to keep the townspeople as a snack for later, and then dumping the FMC and MMC in the lake to teach them a lesson... classic. Loved how she was already mated to the dragons, we didnt have the same ole fight to claim a dragon, etc. The love between the FMC and her dragons was heartwarming. The chapters where the FMC remembers time with her mom were my favorite. Those are the ones that pull at your heart strings.
Things that caused me to rate this lower: The ending of the book was a bit rushed and out of order? All of a sudden we have different POVs added in, and a chapter that felt like it should have been an epilogue to set the baseline of the story. Would love to see some more descriptive details, being that this is titled an epic fantasy book, I want to be immersed into this world. Give me visuals! Maybe that's just a personal opinion. Wanted a bit more info on the curse. I don't feel like I fully grasped it, even with the chapter at the end. Definitely look forward to the next book, as theres definitely going to be growth in this authors writing!

Thank you LCB for this advance copy! 🔥 Loss, trauma, torture, revenge, political intrigue, rebellion, and court corruption.. this book tackles some really heavy themes. I really enjoyed how mental health is represented in the story and how we can even feel Allara’s struggles and insecurities stemming from her traumatized childhood. However, I would have loved to read more about the Curse, the magic system, and all the Court affairs. I feel that a bit more explanation on those aspects would have added more layers to the story, enhancing both the understanding and the plot development. That being said, I really liked the plotline, the pacing, and the characters. The slow burn was really interesting. Kastor is a lovable MMC without being extremely dark or brooding. He leads the Rebels, and we can clearly see how much he cares for them and for the Cause. And later, we also see how he feels about Allara and how their relationship evolves. The side characters were charming, funny, and incredibly easy to fall for. And Aurelith and Elyphora were hilarious. Somewhere between a mother hen and an annoying sister, they sometimes stole the show. I loved their relationship with Allara, how much they care about her, and her promising future ❤️🔥 You'll find these Tropes: 🔥Enemies to Lovers 🔥Bloodline Curse 🔥Found Family 🔥Dragons 🔥Unique Magic System 🔥Slow Burn Romance 🔥Corrupted Kingdom 🔥Loss & Trauma 🔥Mental Health Rep.
ARC REVIEW: I LOVED this book! 5 stars!!! What I loved about this book: 1. The dragon banter was top tier! They were hilarious. It was comical from chapter 1. They comically roasted everyone! Elyphora is a girl's best friend, she is a ride-or-die, light your butt on fire to motivate and pick you up, type of dragon; quite literally. Aurelith, is the constant, encouraging older confidant, who lifts you up, but won't take your bs or whining. Both are necessary and amazing; you can't live without them. 2. The banter between Allara and Kastor is also great. Enemies to supportive understanding to lovers. Slow tension and buildup. This is closed door spice. 3. The writing style. It's poetic. It sweeps you in and keeps your attention very easily. You won't put this book down. 4. The mental health rep. It's done beautifully. You feel Allara's pain, trauma, and you connect; whether you've experienced trauma or not. You relate. The trauma is generational. It's bone deep. 5. Found family; especially Ollie. 6. Retribution. 7. Magic system. 8. Have I mentioned the dragons?
I cannot wait for the prequel and the sequel. I cannot wait to see everything in this world. The backstory in this world is just as important as the present story. The epilogues are just as good as the main story. Some make you laugh; some make your heart hurt. I cannot say enough about this book.
Definitely add The Line of Ash to your TBR. It comes out Feb 13, 2026. You will not regret it!!!
This book is hardcore fantasy through and through. When I received this ARC, I was genuinely excited to dive in—the premise had so many elements I usually enjoy, and I went into it with high hopes. I did read it all the way through, but in the end, it just wasn’t the right fit for me personally.
That being said, the story itself was gripping and rich with classic fantasy elements. Dragons, princesses, an evil queen, a destined hero, and an overarching curse—this book truly checks all the boxes for readers who love traditional, immersive fantasy worlds. The stakes were high, the worldbuilding was detailed, and the plot was clearly crafted with care.
For me, though, it was a bit of a struggle to get through. The depth and intensity of the fantasy leaned heavier than what I typically gravitate toward, and I didn’t find myself completely absorbed in the way I hoped. I didn’t absolutely demolish this book like I do with some reads, but I still appreciate the story for what it was and the effort behind it.
Just because it wasn’t my personal favorite doesn’t mean it won’t be the perfect book for someone else. Readers who love dense fantasy, classic tropes, and richly built worlds with dragons and magic will likely really enjoy this one. It simply wasn’t my cup of tea—but I can absolutely see it finding its audience.
If you're looking for a quick fantasy read that is full of dragons, magic, political betrayal, and an evil queen, this this might be for you!
We jump right into action from the start. We have Allara, our FMC, who has been through a lot of trauma and just doing what she has to in order to survive. She is strong and full of fire magic. Then we have Kastor, our MMC, who is broody, protective, and a ruthless leader of the rebels. And we cannot forget about the dragons! Allara is bonded to two dragons, which is a bit unique, and both of them have personalities on opposite sides of the spectrum, but they are both amazing.
We go on the journey of Allara escaping from the castle, the evil queen is her grandmother, and pairing up with the rebels to help to try to destroy the throne to combat the curse that is killing everybody and everything.
This book was easy and quick to read, and I enjoyed it, however, I do wish there was a bit more. I wanted to know and understand more of the backstory. We got some pieces, but just a little. I also wanted to understand more about the magic system and the curse itself. The writing style is also a bit more on the staccato side, and sometimes that writing style is difficult for me personally, but it does make it quick and descriptive.
Thank you to the author for allowing me to read this one early!
The Line Of Ash holds your attention from the first page. Immediately starting off with Allara (our FMC) in a rebel dungeon after being on the run from her grandparents, the evil Queen and King.
Allara’s mother gave up her status as heir to the kingdom to keep her. Causing the fracture of the Crown and the loss of her magic, cascading to a curse on the kingdom in which magic is dying out.
When Allara and her dragons forms an unexpected alliance with the rebels and their commander, Kastor (MMC), she begins to gain confidence in herself, her magic and what she needs to do in order to save herself and the kingdom.
The banter was excellent, especially from Allara and her dragons. I do wish we could have gotten more insight and pov from Kastor seeing that he came off more of a side character rather than a MC with how little we were able to get to know or interact from him.
Additionally I found myself needing more details about the kingdom, the curse, the characters back stories, etc. otherwise this would have been a 6⭐️ read! If this story continues I would love to see more details and more about the MMC and side characters, world building and possibly a slower pace to allow an expansion of details. It was just a bit rushed in my opinion.
I really enjoyed this book and feel it has so much potential!
Thank you to the author for allowing me to ARC read for you!
Line of Ash is a fast paced epic fantasy that throws you straight into the action. From the very beginning, I was completely pulled in and intrigued by the FMC, an exiled princess bonded to not one but two dragons. The banter back and forth with the two dragons and Allara was so fun and I really enjoyed their inner monologue. The MMC, Kastor, is a stoic, grumpy rebel leader who has taken her as prisoner. I would have liked a bit more of him, but it was nothing that I felt made the story lack in any way. More of just a personal preference.
At first I found myself flipping back a few pages, wondering if I’d missed something or if there was a previous book. However, as the story moves on I thought L.C. did a fantastic job of weaving in the backstory through dreams, conversations, and her memories, making everything make more sense and come together as the story continued. The way mental health and dissociation were represented through memories and dreams was something I really appreciated. It added depth to the FMC’s trauma and made the abuse she suffered feel more real and understandable without having to necessarily go into full details of the trauma. I lost track of time completely while reading that I finished the book in just a day. I’m really looking forward to what L.C. has planned next, especially after that ending. 👀
Firstly, I'd like to thank L.C. Browning and their team for the opportunity to receive an ARC copy of The Line of Ash. It is always an absolute pleasure when an author trusts you with their baby, and I take that very seriously. Now, onto the review.
Wow, just wow. I don't even know where to start with this one without breaking out in a song and dance that will absolutely spoil it for everyone.
I loved everything about this. The powers, the people, the dragons. I laughed, I cried, I tried not to throw my kindle across the room. I really enjoyed not being hit over the head with every piece of information conceivable. I finished this so happy, so excited for what's to come, but with so many questions I want to claw through my screen to beg the author for the next installment.
I absolutely adored the characters; there is something so special about the gang that I hope we see more of them as a group in later books. And good riddance to other characters that shall not be named!
Elyphora and Aurelith are amazing! I loved them so much. Again, no spoilers but to my fantasy girls, just know Elyphora and Andarna from Fourth Wing would get on like a house on fire (no pun intended).
First off, thank you to L.C.Browning for this ARC. Luckily for everyone who hasn’t had the chance to devour this book yet, it releases on February 13!
This was absolutely a 5 star read for me. L.C Browning might be one of the most visually compelling writers I have ever come across. Every word created imagery in my head that made this masterpiece stunning.
I felt the emotion of broken family and the need for walls in order to sustain breathing. I felt the emotion behind the FMC realizing her allegiance was squarely against her roots.
“One: my mother dies because of that throne. I’m going to burn it… Two: my grandparents turned my bloodline into a curse that chewed our kingdom apart. They will answer to me… And three: I owe it to my mother.“
Chills.
And then… they f@&king ride at dawn! 🐉🦋
The butterfly scenes are my absolute favorite. I could just see them dispelling their magic in solid rage and control protecting what is theirs.
Let’s not sleep on the fire that burns between Allara (FMC) and Kastor (MMC)! ☄️It is slow and kind and gentle and protective.
I am truly sad this has ended. The final scene will live in my head for a hot minute and the tears that were streaming might take a bit to dry.
Let start off by saying I was so excited for this read and so thankful for the opportunity to get an ARC. The book Blurb had me from the start.
When it comes to fantasy, dragons, magic, and badass main characters are my favorite. Allara is a the FMC. She's not whiney, has a huge chip on her shoulder, and 2 dragons. Her development throughout the story is emotional to say the least. I hate a whiney female and she is far from it. She's pretty badass and doesn't mind getting her hands dirty. Kastor is the brooding male that we all need. The banter between not only them but the other characters is the best. I was chuckling.
I will say that I wish the dragons had bigger parts, but that's just me. I'm a sucker for dragons. Also I will say that there is no spice, only suggestive scenes. While I do like some good spice, it did not hinder the story at all. The author did amazing with this, and I know it's hard to find a good fantasy without spice.
The reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 was simply because I felt like I was missing something. I felt like a needed more on the background. Like how and why the royal family are the way they are. I felt like I need more context on the past.
Will I be reading the next book.... absolutely. I can not wait. I have already ordered my physical book as well 💗
Thank you to for this advanced copy, below is my honest review.
Allara, our princess with magical powers is captured by Kastor, the leader of the rebellion. She is being imprisoned in a cave system that houses the resistance. She has traded one cell for another it seems.
Until she is rescued.
Traumatized from her childhood, Allara doesn’t want to return home to the Queen and her betrothed but she isn’t sure she can trust the resistance…The problem is the Kingdom needs her to help break a curse that’s infesting their lands and people.
🐉Bonded dragons 🗡️Enemies to Lovers 💫Loss and Trauma 🗡️Found Family 💫Bloodline curse
I found myself wanting more back story about the court and the curse which would have fleshed out the plot even more. (I love some world building)
That being said it was a fun and fast paced read, and the Dragons banter was AWESOME! You will also fall in love with the cast of side characters as well!
Favorite line:
Rebellion doesn’t begin in fire. It begins when silence is no longer survivable. (boy does this hit close to home right now)
Favorite Quote:
“Bravery isn’t the absence of fear. It’s the choice to keep breathing through it.”
Thank you to LCB for an ARC of this story!! I absolutely loved this story! This book follows Allara (MFC) an escaped princess with a traumatic backstory and Kastor (MMC) the rebel leader. Allara also has 2 bonded dragons (Elyphora and Aurelith) that are a main part of the story. The main characters are fantastic, and I found the plot really interesting. LCB’s ability to convey Allara’s trauma and PTSD is phenomenal but she does a great job of breaking up the serious topics with the banter between both the human characters and the dragons which constantly had me laughing. I really enjoyed seeing the dragon dialog as Aurelith seems like the wise mother figure who is always willing to provide good advice and Elyphora was the “toddler” always willing to brighten the mood with some shenanigans. I love that Kastor’s close knit circle of friends help Allara come out of her shell a bit and help her feel like she’s part of their little family. Allara’s magic in this story is so different than in other stories since hers is based around her butterflies which is really cool and unique. The story is a fast paced rollercoaster of emotions and I cannot wait for book 2!
A gripping and emotionally charged romantasy with unforgettable atmosphere. From the first chapter, I was swept into Allara’s desperate escape from her family’s violent legacy and into a world that feels vast, ancient, and alive. The author’s sense of place is exceptional. Every setting carries mood and meaning, enhancing the tension and giving the story a cinematic quality. Even the dragons are portrayed with nuance: terrifying, majestic, and surprisingly tender in ways that deepen the emotional stakes. What truly anchors the novel is the evolving dynamic between Allara and Kastor. Their alliance is fragile, shaped by loss and suspicion, and their growing trust feels earned rather than rushed. The story explores trauma, power, and identity with maturity, letting the characters wrestle with their past instead of glossing over it. The violence serves the narrative without overwhelming it, keeping the focus on emotional consequences. This book delivers high stakes, layered romance, and immersive worldbuilding. A standout read that left me wanting the next installment immediately which is why I gave this book a five-star review.
The Line of Ash was a really strong read. The magic system felt fresh and immersive, and the story carries a strong political influence that adds depth as everything unfolds.
The writing style is thoughtful and engaging, and it felt distinct in a way that pulled me deeper into the world with each chapter. There’s a nice balance between action, emotion, and quieter character moments that kept me invested without anything feeling dragged out. The chemistry between the main characters is tension-filled and expressive throughout, and the banter was great.
What stood out to me most was how shaped the characters felt by what they’ve endured. That emotional depth made the journey feel real and helped me connect with the characters in the story. The dragons, found family elements, and slow-burn tension added warmth and contrast to an otherwise dark and fractured world.
While there were moments where I wished for a bit more detail around certain aspects of the magic or political structure, it didn’t take away from how much I enjoyed the story overall. This is a strong start to a series, and I’m definitely interested to see where it goes from here.
Thank you to the author for providing an advance reader copy.
Tropes / Themes: 🐉 Dragons 🔥 Slow-burn romance ⚔️ Rebellion & corrupt royals 🩸 Curses & bloodlines 🖤 Found family 🧠 Mental health representation 👑 Political intrigue
I really enjoyed this book. It has sassy dragons, a strong FMC, an evil queen and unique magic!
I immediately was hooked on this story from the very beginning and stayed hooked until the end! I couldn’t wait to find out what happens. The book is written so beautifully and eloquently, I couldn’t stop marvelling at it!
Allara, our FMC, is opinionated, strong and sassy. I absolutely loved her bond with her dragons and I felt her pain. We get to experience the book from Allara’s POV until the epilogues and I love seeing the ending from different characters views.
Kastor really showed me that he loved Allara and cared for her through the smallest of actions! I love the quiet type of love and you could feel that from him. It was the simple things he did, but they meant a lot.
I would love to see the prologue and start of Allara’s and Kastor’s story as i felt like i was already supposed to know it when were first introduced to him in chapter 1.
I think fantasy book lovers will enjoy this book as it has a unique and fun plot!
Thank you to LCB and her team for giving me the opportunity to read this book in advance! I can’t wait to see more from the author.
Some of my favourite quotes:
““I won’t use your pain to justify my choices,” I go on. “And I won’t let you use mine to control them.””
L.C. Browning’s The Line of Ash is a breathtaking fantasy that grabs you from the first page and refuses to let go. This story masterfully crafts a world rich with magic, ancient curses, and an oppressive evil queen, all centered around a protagonist whose emotional journey is a true rollercoaster. Allara is a standout heroine whose strength is earned through resilience, and her dual dragon bonds—complete with witty banter—provide a beautiful anchor for the fast-paced rebellion. The prose is exceptionally vivid, making the immersive worldbuilding and atmospheric scenes feel entirely lifelike. I found myself swept up in the slow-burn tension and evolving trust between Allara and the broody Kastor, a dynamic that feels deeply grounded despite the high-stakes danger. I finished this book in less than two days, completely wrecked by the emotional payoff of the final chapters but left entirely satisfied. It is the perfect read for fans of fierce heroines, found family, and dragon-rider fantasy who are looking for their next obsession.
This was such a great read! The action starts right from the first page and doesn’t let up until the very end. It is very immersive and keeps you engaged the entire time. The pacing in my opinion is perfect, and it flows very well. The magic system is unique and interesting. The characters are written well, especially the dragons…because we of course love dragons! I love the relationship that develops between Allara and Kastor. The banter was great and had me grinning every time. I like how the story unfolds the more you read, with backstories interweaved with the main story, giving it more layers and depth. You can feel the emotion poured into this book and through the characters. This was a great start to the series and I’m excited to see where it goes. If you love dragons, magic, political intrigue, found family, and amazing banter then this book is for you!
Thank you so much to the author for a gifted advanced reader copy. I am voluntarily leaving a review, and all thoughts are my own.
Dragons, magic, an evil queen, just of the basics for an amazing fantasy. Allara is the granddaughter of the evil queen and has been caged all her life. Even though Kastor captures her, he becomes her savior.
I loved how Allara's magic and powers were described in the book. It was a new perspective and personally, I love butterflies. The dragons were honestly the best part of the book for me. The contrast between the two of them made it even better, Elyphora as the wild, reckless one and Aurelith as the calm, wise one.
I do feel like the romance between Kastor and Allara fell kind of flat. They had some verbal sparring matches and there was a bit of a spark, but I just wanted more between them before they got together.
I'm interested to know if there's a second book. Because while it does come to a conclusion of sorts, I can see the potential for a sequel.
I really enjoyed Allara and her personality. She really was a master at pretense. She could be terrified and if you weren’t someone close to her, then you would never know. Kastor is amazing for her because of how steadfast and unemotional he is but it also seems as if we never get a true glimpse of him as a person. The dragons were my favorite, especially Ely. That was where we saw some snark and real emotion within the book. I wasn’t always sure whose viewpoint I was supposed to be reading from but it didn’t cause a big stutter with the story. A lot of events that could have been really emotional or help to see more character depth was glossed over but I feel like it was on purpose so younger readers could still enjoy the story. I’m excited for a book 2 so we can see more of our favorite characters personalities and see if Allara continues to fit in with her newfound family
I was lucky enough to get an ARC copy of this book thank you L.C. Browning ❤️
I loved the 2 main characters in this story! The Line of Ash follows Princess Allara the FMC who is captured by the MMC Kastor leader of the rebels. Allara has been traumatized by her family for most of her life. Intro the Evil Queen her grandmother! Allara and her 2 bonded dragons (loved them especially Elyphora) has to work with Kastor and the rebels to break the families curse. There was slow burn tension between Kastor and Allara who’s very untrusting of anyone. The roller coaster towards the end of the book 😳 I was not ok! I really enjoyed this book if you want to read something that will make you laugh, get mad, smile and make you late for work ( I just had to finish it) lol than you need to read The Line of Ash! I need more of Allara and Kastor so I’m ready for another book!!
