Mera and the mystery of Atlantis unravels, even as Andy moves towards her ultimate goal and Arthur contends with the power of the Blue! But is this power too much for even a KING to contend with? An oceanic onslaught unloads on the king of the seven seas, and a the connection between the DARK TIDE and DARKSEID is at last revealed!
I have to admit that felt like a bit of a waste of a DC tie-in issue and barely an Aquaman issue. Literally all that happened is that we got to watch Justice league blue, as Zan has started calling them, fight a bunch of parademons who are showing up all over because of DC KO, and then fight more of Apokolips warriors when they found an underwater nest trying to build one of the volcanic furnaces from Apokolips on Earth. This issue was also filled with some of the cheesiest dialogue ever. Which at some points I find endearing, but with the whole really powerful corrupted by omega vibe they are putting on Aquaman it feels off. I mean we get such hits as:
Aquaman: “What in the Davey Jone’s locker…”
and:
Aquaman: “Being careful doesn’t come with the job.”
and who could forget:
Titanus: “Titanus, crush?”
Aquaman: “Yes…Titanus crush.”
Ha, loved it when they did that in the first avengers movie. But I will have to admit it was fun seeing the deep six again. One of the lesser known aquatic based warrior groups from Apokolips which is a great match up for Aquaman. Well I should say no match for Aquaman as they got swept away in time for a pin-up page, lol. ALSO, ZAN…stop hanging out with JLD and go look for your sister. No it’s not better that you can just change on command if it means something is up with her.
But the real juice of this issue comes from a different perspective as we get a few pages where we follow Mera after Garth is able to open a portal out of the true Atlantis, wherever they may be, and let her back into the main universe. She immediately heads over to Xebel, and strangely finds its entrance in ruins. But as she heads towards her father’s palace, she finds an unlikely answer in someone who I’ve never met before but is clearly her former betrothed, someone named Nereus sitting on her father’s throne in what is left of Xebel. Now that is interesting.

I picked this up partly for the DC KO tie-in but mostly because I wanted to see Nimit Malavia in interiors. I’ve been enjoying his covers on New Gods and some variants a good deal. The art does not disappoint - it’s very pretty, fluid, magical. It actually reminds me of Evan Cagle a bit, speaking of New Gods. I hope Malavia gets more interior work because he deserves it.
The writing, however, is underwhelming overall with a couple of eye-roll lines from Mera and Andy fawning after Arthur as their King. Gross. Let the cool, powerful women be cool, powerful women!
I'm not the biggest Aquaman fan and only purchased this issue due to the tie-in, but it was interesting enough to keep me intrigued. The story started out following Mera which I was hoping to see play out more, but it intertwined with Aquaman and his Justice League Blue, and this whole concept of the Blue feels very exciting for what it means for not only him but his band of allies as well. I also really enjoyed the artwork inside this issue and how the characters are drawn and portrayed.

This felt like a filler. I get that it's a tie-in to the event, but these kind of almost forced tie-ins that don't really work as an issue of the series they're in are what makes me dislike events. they're almost impossible to skip too, because of the tie-ins.
I really like this new Aquaman series and the old and new characters it includes and it is a bit annoying to see it side-tracked due to DC K.O. This issue is really a "prelude" filler that does not add much to either storyline.
