In Stalin's Shadow

Rate this book
In Stalin's Leon Trotsky and the Legacy of the Moscow Trials examines how Trotsky has been portrayed as a villainous figure in conspiracy theories ranging from Russian antisemitic television series to neo-Stalinist historical narratives. Greene analyzes the Moscow Trials of the 1930s and unmasks modern defenders of Stalin like Domenico Losurdo and Grover Furr, who continue to argue for Trotsky's guilt in alleged conspiracies.

Virtually all historically knowledgeable people recognize that the Moscow Trials and the Great Purges were horrific crimes against socialism based on shameless lies. Yet once in a while, you still encounter Stalinists who believe that millions of Communists in the Soviet Union were conspiring with Nazi Germany, Japan, the UK, and others, despite the complete absence of evidence. They often cite a small circle of modern Stalin apologists, ranging from historians with some intellectual heft, like Domenico Losurdo, to pathetic cranks like Grover Furr.

Doug Greene read through all of this apologia so we don't have to. He has presented a thorough takedown of the neo-Stalinist conspiracy theorists, which is well worth a read for anyone who wants to better understand the Moscow Trials. I read this back when it was a draft called The Prophet Prosecuted. It has since been published as In Stalin's Shadow.
