Mothlight: A Glass Cage Stalker Romance

Rate this book
“It’s a good thing you want to be owned…because you belong to me now.”

The Photographer
I capture what others light trembling on glass, ghosts hidden in a reflection.

Through my lens, the world makes sense…until it starts looking back.

During the day the greenhouse is a paradise, but in the darkness it becomes a nightmare.

A handprint on the window. A shadow behind me.

I tell myself it’s nothing, that I’m imagining him.

But when I close my eyes, I can still feel him watching me.

He sees me in ways no one else ever has.

And I don’t want him to stop.

The Ghost

I shouldn’t have followed her.

But she lives in a house of glass like she wants me to see her.

I watch her sleep, I listen to her breathe, I memorize her fears.

If I touched her now, she’d call it violence.

If I wait long enough, she’ll call it fate.

And when she finally opens the door…

I’ll be waiting.

A stalker romance that will seduce you tenderly before swallowing you whole.

This sophomore novel is a solid outing. I loved her debut novel, which focused more mythology and the supernatural. This one falls squarely in the dark romance masked stalker category.

The FMC Dove is a bit of a lost soul. She's not your normal young waify damsel. She's got rough edges and has been repressing herself to fit in. She's been shaped by her trauma. Enter ghost, who's trauma has equally shaped his perspective. Is he a white knight, or just another psycho in disguise? The masks worn by both are not just physical. Obsession fuels this game, the prize is not guaranteed. Photography and stalking are two opposite ends of the same coin. Seeing another through the lens, but is it real? The intertwining of the caterpillar metamorphosis fit this book very well. I enjoyed this story and can't wait for the Nova's book.

Tropes and triggers: stalking, dubcon, somno, touch her and die, bullying, sa.

Mothlight by Alyissa M. Lore [ARC REVIEW]
★★★★★
5/5 stars
Release date: February 28th, 2026

I’ve been waiting breathlessly for this book… and it showed me what it means to be seen.

IF YOU LIKE:
• Obsession at first sight
• “Match each other’s freak” energy
• Stalking and violence, with spice to match
• A pure ray of sunshine FMC (with a dark side)
• Plus-sized rep
• Possessive and protective behaviour
YOU’LL LOVE Mothlight

≪ No wonder she wanted to be devoured… her soul had been starving and no one dared to feed it. ≫

HIGHLIGHTS:
• Dove Mercer
→ As a plus-sized woman, I needed a protagonist like Dove. She is a woman who is driven as much by whimsy and delight as she is by perfectionism and insecurity. She chases darkness because she sees beauty in every crack. She talks to bugs and handles them with love. She jokes around with herself after breaking into abandoned buildings. She reaches for ghosts and holds them close, because a ghost isn’t as frightening as something unexplained. She filters her entire world through art and a camera lens. She understands that fear and excitement can walk hand-in-hand, but she’s brave enough (or unwise enough) to let herself experience thrills despite the danger. And she’s strong enough to let down her walls, even when she doesn’t know if it’s entirely safe to do so. She starts the book as a victim and later becomes the danger, and I loved that for her. I saw so much of myself in Dove, and as I watched her be seen and loved, I felt a little bit seen and loved myself.

• [REDACTED], Dove’s Ghost
→ Ghost is either the most deluded self-aware character or the most self-aware delusional character I’ve ever come across. We get to watch this man collapse in real time as he discovers what “obsession at first sight” feels like, and his pragmatic and militaristic narration style makes it very clear that he is far more surprised by his desires than we are. The choice to keep his name a mystery for 75% of the book was a brilliant one—this is a man who is in over his head, who has thrown himself into the worship of a woman who doesn’t even know his name, and is frantically reading manuals (i.e. Dove’s favourite dark romance novels) to figure out what he’s supposed to be doing. He defines himself around Dove for so much of the story that his name truly doesn’t matter until Dove goes looking for it herself. He makes mistakes… but he owns them, corrects them, and makes sure he never does it again. He learns, grows, evolves, and submits to the chaos that is this wild, impossible woman.

• Their families
→ This may be an unorthodox element to praise in a dark stalker romance, but I truly believe that the glimpses we get of Dove’s family through their limited interactions and Ghost’s family through his memories are a highlight of this story. Aunt Vivi IS the inciting incident; not only because she’s the one who brings Dove into Ghost’s orbit by asking her to housesit, but also because she is a source of crushing and devastating faith that sparks Dove into action. Nova is assertive, bold, and incredibly nuanced; the way the sisters interact feels loaded with love, tension, buried resentment, and undying affection. She is an excellent foil to Dove: practical, sensible, career-driven, and no-nonsense. While the references to Dove’s mother are few and far between, they are weighed down with expectation, disappointment, and fragile hope whenever Dove thinks about her. Ghost’s parents, meanwhile, are the architects of his entire identity. His skills and his worldview are heavily defined by his family and their contentious past. Family has real weight in Mothlight, and its impact is well-crafted and realistic.

• The greenhouse
→ It was a true stroke of genius to set the majority of this book in a greenhouse. The sensory details are lush and vibrant, creating a scene that I felt that I could breathe in alongside Dove as she explored the house on her first day. The glass itself creates a fascinating and thematic dichotomy that echoes throughout the book in various ways: what does it mean to be seen and what happens when you look back? The difference between the glass walls during the day—open, safe, revealing threats from all sides—and the glass at night—blinded, vulnerable, exposing the weaknesses inside—is a brilliant mirror to Dove herself. Excitement and fear, hunter and prey, boldness and hesitation; the greenhouse is a metaphor for all of it. The greenhouse is not just a setting; it’s a character, a plot device, a motivation, narrative principle, and a conflict in and of itself. This is a book about being seen, painfully and with no escape, and there is no better place to set this story.

≪ I’d always wanted to feel small, delicate, and easy for a lover to scoop up and whisk away, but now that the night pressed in on me in my glass cage, I would gladly have traded places with the monster just so that I didn’t have to feel like prey. ≫

WISHLIST:
• Slightly more detail about Evan
→ Evan’s fate is largely handwaved and put off for future Ghost to handle, but I would have appreciated just a little more detail in how he intends to do so. As it stands, I trust him to deal with the situation, but the “what ifs” still loom large in my mind.

≪ “When no one is looking at me, it feels like I don’t exist. But now you won’t stop looking and it’s burning me alive. I’ve never existed this long before. It hurts.” ≫

♡ARC Review♡

This story is about Dove and Her Ghost (yes, he has an actual name). Dove is house sitting for her aunt while she's away, and her house just so happens to be a greenhouse. So everywhere she looks, it's all glass. Exposed everywhere. Makes her a perfect target for her ghost, and her ghost just wants to bring her fantasies to life. When the spice hit.. HOLY MOSES.. I SQUEALED. You'll understand when you get to Chapter 24 🤭 At one point, I even sounded like a velociraptor because I am a SUCKER for a woman taking charge and making the all-powerful man bend at her will/mercy! Do I recommend this book? ABSOFREAKINGLUTELY. I can't wait for y'all to read this when it drops!

I went into this expecting unhinged stalker vibes and came out of it questioning my moral compass and my life choices… so yeah, 5 stars.

This book is weirdly grounded for something so feral. Like yes...he’s obsessed, yes...he’s watching, yes...this is morally grey as hell… but there were moments where it felt almost too real. The way he thinks, the way he waits, the way he justifies everything? Chilling in a “why does this make sense right now” kind of way.

And the GLASS HOUSE??? I cannot stress this enough...this setting is EVERYTHING. The constant feeling of being seen, nowhere to hide, nowhere to breathe… I swear I felt exposed just reading it.

Dove is such an interesting character because she doesn’t follow the path you expect. She shifts, she reacts, she unravels in a way that feels messy and a little unpredictable. Was it perfect? No. Did I eat it up anyway? Absolutely. There’s something so compelling about watching a character blur the line between fear and desire.

And Julian… yeah. I get it. I get the obsession. Problematic? Sure. But also?? The restraint, the patience, the slow descent into “this is mine”...I was locked in.

This isn’t your typical polished dark romance. It’s jagged. It’s uncomfortable at times. It leans into the chaos instead of smoothing it out...and honestly? That’s what made it hit so hard for me.

Another book 5 stars, what a good month!!!

Anyways, this book was everything I was looking for at the moment. The secret identity, the stalking, the romance, the mystery, the spice, the photos..it had everything. It consumed me.
Where do I even start? I loved the way they met, the way he saved her, and then the stalking. It was just cute. And the spice don’t even get me started, It was absolutely so good and it was there when it was needed, and not all the time. There were some chapters where I completely lost my mind. But that one chapter where she had him wrapped around her finger🫠
Dove and the Ghost—I’m obsessed with them🫶🏼
I don't know what to say anymore cause I don't wanna spoil anything but if you loved Haunting Adeline, start this book now.
The storyline was unique, it had me hooked from start to finish.

I loved seeing Dove come into herself. She seen the world through a lense and finding herself, her likes, and her dislikes really spoke to her growth.

Ghost was the perfect unhinged, and in my opinion, kind of a golden retriever. Poor thing was so incased in a military way of thinking, that him trying to do “research” through books was a little amusing to me. But he understood Dove and was going to do what it took to please her

I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait for the next one 😊

What drew me in first was the cover, it's absolutely beautiful. I flew threw this book it was such an easy read. Hooked me from the start and didn't lose my interest once. Loved the MMC and the only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the FMC was a bit cringe at times but overall her progression while coming into her own was loveable. Loved this story and will absolutely recommend to everyone I know!

Did I cry again? Yes. Yes I did.

Mothlight was a 10/10 read! Under 300pgs and fast paced enough to literally have me reading through the night and finishing it in less than 24hrs.

I am convinced that Alyissa stalked me for inspo for the FMC and I am honored 🖤 🕊️

This was completely unhinged, and I loved it. She's a photographer taking a desperate last chance to do what she loves. He's an obsessive stalker who will stop at nothing to have her. When she realizes that she's being watched, she hates it, but she hates even more that she loves it.

As he crosses lines, she shows him why he chose her in the first place. This was dark, twisty and completely wrong, but so right too.

Pleasantly surprised

Liked this more than I expected I would to be honest! The back and forth between her and her stalker was witty cute. The ending was definitely unexpected but it was an all around good book. There were a few typos but nothing too over the top. Definitely recommend!

I'd say Mothlight is a fun read, but it's a stalker romance. Alyissa Lore describes it as a combination of Lights Out and Haunting Adeline, and I think that's spot on. I found this book to be a quick read, with a few laughs, but not without yelling out loud at out two main characters.

Dove, our fmc, is endangered regularly enough, that, as a woman, it's realistic. The mental health trope is believable, and blunt speech is used, so watch your triggers, preferably before starting the book. Our mic cannot be named without spoilers, but he's worth the wait. When they first come face to face, he gives her a chance to unmask him, but she refuses. "You were braver in my fantasy..... You perform for a ghost, but a man, a face, is what makes you shrink?" (pg194)

Dove spends some time housesitting her aunt's quaint converted greenhouse... in the middle of nowhere. Oh, and she's got a stalker. Who knows her deepest desires. And she may have told him herself. She might like it though.

I give Mothlight a solid 4 stars, I would give another .5 if possible. I am excited for the next book. Its stars Dove's sister, a very tightly wound Nova, who turns her trauma in a different direction.

This book is about a plus sized photographer trying to find herself, strength and inspiration while being stalked by her ‘Ghost’. This book was good until it threatened to be only ok. These characters are mostly organic. Many books have men that are sex gods, dominating women. The Ghost while being a stalker and obsessed does and says things I would expect a non-book boyfriend of doing or saying. Dove is… interesting. I really liked her until her sister showed up, where she became very impressionable, unhinged and a completely different person. I think if the author made her ‘crazy’ a part of her entire/historic personality would have made it feel more conducive. Whereas the abrupt personality change with no history made it seem like the author was talking about two different people. Overall, I love Julian, and the while Dove’s personality could have been better developed, I liked the story.

Fantastic!

At first glance the Ghost is drawn to his Moth. Dove and Julien have a connection right out of her favorite stalker novel. She deals with her inner turmoil about her attraction to the dangerous situation she’s in. He pushes his way into her world in ways he thinks is best. As her confidence in herself grows Julien finds he may have underestimated the woman he’s fallen for.

Truly a fun read that moves at a quick pace with a plus sized FMC, a MMC who falls first and hard, and a slight horror/thriller feel.

Giving this book a high five for something I’ve never seen before: an FMC living in a glass greenhouse! Talk about making the sta|ker’s job easy! And yes, this is a DARK stalker romance for all the readers who wonder how they’d handle actually living out the plot of one of their beloved books. This is a check your TW’s for sure, but it has so much more depth than you often see. It deals with social commentary about DR and embracing self-love. It also flips the script at the end in a perfect way. And the spice is 🥵

This was a fun read (more so the first half) but one that had me questioning his and her motives nearly the entire story.
I don’t have many triggers, but the stalker turned forced pain/pleasure dynamic didn’t quite hit home for me.
Dove spends most of the book being the victim, though secretly desiring being controlled. Her ghost is only a ghost for a short time before he switches gears to being her masked stalker/captor.
And unfortunately for me personally, I’m not a fan when the writing constantly goes from past to present tense.

Omg I loved it. The part where Dove goes nuts with the gun on Julian was just perfection. This was better than Lights Out and that’s one of my fave books. Really well done.
