The Long GameBook One of The Willow Bend Chronicles
by Tequilla Havens

Seven years ago, Kaius Merrick walked away from everything—his small-town roots, his family, and the girl he promised forever. Now a worn-down baseball star haunted by regrets and whispers he can’t explain, he returns to Willow Bend… and to Avaline Steele.

Ava has spent those same years trying to rebuild what was left behind—her bookstore, her peace, her belief that love can survive loss. But when Kai steps back into her life, so does something else. The lights flicker. The air shifts. And in the scent of cinnamon and the creak of old floorboards, she swears she hears her grandmother’s voice again.

In a town where history clings to every wall and some goodbyes never quite take, Ava and Kai must confront the ghosts of who they were—and the ones who never left.

The Long Game is a lyrical, small-town second-chance romance touched by memory, mystery, and the supernatural—the story of two hearts learning that sometimes, the past isn’t finished with you until you finish it first.

This book has a little bit of everything...second chance romance, childhood love, complicated relationships, and, most importantly for me, an eerie paranormal mystery woven throughout the story.

At its core, this is a quiet and subtle haunting centered around a group of friends and siblings who are being haunted by their ancestors while also feeling threatened by something or someone unknown. The suspense was incredibly addictive, especially with the clues and messages the ghosts leave behind. Every reveal pulled me in deeper and kept me constantly trying to piece everything together.

What really stood out to me was how grounded and emotionally aware these characters felt. The relationships develop naturally, sometimes through the smallest moments or quiet silences, which made the romances feel genuine and emotional. I also loved that there were multiple romantic storylines unfolding alongside the mystery, making every POV feel important and layered.

The writing itself was beautifully done, especially when it came to the mystery and symbolism. You can tell there’s a much deeper meaning hidden beneath everything happening in the story, and that sense of underlying tension made it impossible to stop reading.

From beginning to end, I was completely hooked. I absolutely need the next book because I have so many unanswered questions, and I’m desperate to see these relationships continue to grow and blossom.

Book Review: The Long Game (Willow Bend Trilogy, Book 1)

The Long Game, the opening novel in the Willow Bend Trilogy, is a character-driven story that blends emotional depth, tension, and long-term storytelling in a way that lives up to its title. Rather than rushing through plot points, the novel carefully builds its world and characters, allowing readers to settle into the rhythms of Willow Bend while slowly revealing the deeper conflicts simmering beneath the surface.
Story & Themes
At its core, The Long Game is about patience, consequences, and the quiet battles people fight over time. The narrative leans into the idea that not every victory is immediate and not every struggle is visible. Relationships evolve slowly, motivations are layered, and decisions made early in the story echo throughout the book in meaningful ways.
The pacing reflects this philosophy. Instead of relying on constant action, the author focuses on long-term emotional and strategic stakes. Readers who appreciate stories where tension builds gradually—and where every interaction has potential future consequences—will find this approach particularly rewarding.
Characters
One of the book’s strongest elements is its character work. The characters feel grounded and believable, with motivations that grow clearer as the story unfolds. They aren’t defined by simple archetypes; instead, they carry flaws, doubts, and ambitions that shape the narrative in subtle ways.
The interpersonal dynamics in Willow Bend are especially compelling. Friendships, rivalries, and alliances shift throughout the novel, creating an atmosphere where trust is earned slowly and sometimes broken just as quietly.
World & Atmosphere
Willow Bend itself becomes almost a character within the story. The setting is written with a sense of familiarity and realism that gives the narrative a strong foundation. The town’s atmosphere—its relationships, history, and underlying tensions—helps create a feeling that the story is part of a much larger tapestry that will continue to unfold throughout the trilogy.
The writing style emphasizes mood and reflection, allowing the reader to feel the weight of time passing and choices accumulating.
Strengths
Strong character development that grows more compelling as the story progresses
Thoughtful pacing that fits the novel’s themes of patience and strategy
Emotionally grounded storytelling that focuses on long-term consequences
A setting that feels lived-in and authentic
Final Thoughts
The Long Game succeeds as the opening installment of a trilogy by laying a solid narrative foundation. It introduces the characters and conflicts with care, while hinting at larger developments still to come. Readers who enjoy stories driven by character growth, subtle tension, and the slow unfolding of a bigger narrative will find a lot to appreciate here.
This first book lives up to its title: it isn’t about quick victories, but about moves made today that shape the future. If the rest of the trilogy continues building on what this novel establishes, the Willow Bend story has the potential to become something truly memorable.

I didn't realize that I never put my review for the first book here.

Kai and Ava’s story is one that lingers long after the final page. What begins as a young love in high school evolves into something far more complex that is shaped by ambition, distance, and the quiet weight of unfinished feelings. Kai’s decision to leave and pursue his dream of playing professional baseball sets the story in motion, but what unfolds is less about success and more about what truly gives life meaning.

This book explores love, forgiveness, and the secrets people carry sometimes even from themselves. The narrative structure adds an intriguing layer, weaving a story within a story, while a subtle supernatural element guides a close-knit group of friends toward long-buried truths. This aspect adds both mystery and emotional depth, elevating the story beyond a typical romance.

Without giving anything away, the ending leaves readers with lingering questions that seamlessly set up the next installment. It’s the kind of conclusion that makes you immediately eager to continue the journey.

The writing itself is exceptional. It is immersive, emotional, and beautifully crafted. It’s the kind of book that deserves a place on your shelf, and one you’ll want to share with others.

I went into this book without reading the back summary I thought it was going to be a baseball/second chance romance (which it is) but it also focuses on their friend group coming together to solve this mystery each have been getting pieces of the puzzle but until they are willing to be honest with each other and reveal all of the secret clues will they even be able to get to the end of this mystery?

I really enjoyed this book it wasn't what I expected and I enjoyed that the author was able to keep this eerie mystery vibe throughout the story. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series!

The book is equal parts small town, second chance, found family, paranormal, and mystery. Also, multi-POV allows you to see the whole story.

What starts out as a coming home story for our MMC Kai during the off-season of his baseball career turns into a twisting story full of secrets, tension, and a haunted bookstore.

This is definitely one of those stories where you never know what's coming next! Interested to see what is coming for them in book 2, The Quiet Game!

I love it

The Long Game is a gentle, emotional story about second chances, forgiveness, and love that grows through consistency rather than grand gestures.

The romance is slow and intentional, built on trust, quiet loyalty, and emotional presence. The connection feels real because it’s earned over time.

The mystery elements add depth without overpowering the story, creating tension while allowing the emotional journey to remain the focus. I can’t wait to get answers to the unanswered questions and to read more in this series.

This is a heartfelt read for anyone who enjoys meaningful character growth and a romance that lingers long after the final page.

Highly recommend.
