In a world pulling us toward extremes, The And Assertive Peacemaking in a Divided World offers more than just communication strategies—it’s a therapeutic roadmap for the internal work we’ve often been encouraged to skip.
While many books focus on how to talk to people we disagree with, The And Way begins with a deeper We’re often not emotionally regulated, resourced, or self-aware enough to even begin those conversations in a meaningful way.
Blending raw personal storytelling with evidence-based practices—including parts work, dialectics, and trauma-informed care—this book helps readers develop the tolerance, empathy, and emotional resilience necessary for authentic peacemaking.
If you’ve ever been torn between roles, walked on eggshells with the people you love, or felt unsure how to hold both compassion and conviction—this is your next right step.
Author and therapist Kelsey Blahnik, LCSW-S, has walked the path of inner conflict, overcompensating, and healing through complexity. The And Way is the culmination of her clinical experience, personal transformation, and unshakable belief that self-healing is the foundation of world-healing.
This book is for the person who knows there must be something beyond choosing between silence and shouting. It’s for those ready to live, lead, and relate with confident peace—starting from the inside out.
Kelsey Blahnik, LCSW-S, is a clinician, author, advocate, and founder of The And Way™, a practical model for navigating tension while maintaining connection across deep divides. With extensive behavioral health experience supporting unhoused veterans, trauma survivors, and those in recovery, she brings clinical insight and community advocacy together to bridge political and personal rifts. Her dedication to peacemaking drives her involvement with Love Anyway, where she co-hosts monthly gatherings focused on reconciliation. When she’s not facilitating tough conversations, you can find Kelsey in Austin, Texas, with her husband and children hiking her favorite trails, drinking matcha, or dancing with joy, because therapists have fun too.
The And Way is one of those rare self-help books that actually shifts how you think and communicate. Kelsey Blahnik blends her therapy background with real, vulnerable stories, so the whole thing feels grounded and genuinely helpful—not clinical or preachy.
Her “both/and” approach is the real standout. Instead of forcing you to choose between honesty and kindness, speaking up or keeping the peace, she shows you how to hold both at the same time. It’s practical, calming, and surprisingly empowering.
The tools are easy to apply, and the way she talks about emotional regulation and trauma makes the book accessible no matter where you’re starting from. You learn how to set boundaries with clarity, communicate without escalating things, and stay centered even in tough conversations.
Overall, it’s warm, smart, and incredibly useful. If you want a healthier way to navigate conflict and connection—in your relationships, at work, or with yourself—this book is absolutely worth reading. Highly recommend.
I cannot recommend this book enough! I live in a very Purple community with a lot of very strong opinions on both sides of the political aisle, and as a relatively non-confrontational individual, I have often struggled with knowing how to engage in real dialogue with those that have differing beliefs and opinions than I do. I learned so many skills through this book that helped me better understand the way I think and in how to engage in thoughtful, meaningful conversations with those around me. I find myself much less often judging "them" and instead lean in with curiousity and compassion in ways that has driven me to authentic connection with those around me.
Kelsey Blahnik’s The And Way is such a refreshing, empowering read. Her “both-and” approach feels like a breath of fresh air—practical, uplifting, and something you can immediately put into real life, especially when navigating family relationships or moments that feel emotionally intense. I walked away feeling more grounded, more open, and better equipped to handle complexity with confidence and compassion. I truly recommend this book to anyone looking to grow personally or professionally and bring more ease and clarity into their relationships.
So glad I got this book! It’s changed the way I think about those around me - especially those I disagree with on certain issues. Finding the good in everyone and being curious before judgmental has sparked so many positive conversations already with my 4 and 7 year old girls. There are so many tools and perspectives that are helpful for all ages as we navigate life in a productive way. This book is so needed in today’s society. I highly recommend it.
