This book was tragically overwritten. Victoria Shepherd spends most of the book's runtime going on narrative side quests filled with wild suppositions and extensive editorialisation. Instead of just saying someone is 50 years old, she instead describes them as "over half a century in age." It was at that point I knew this book was not for me.

There is the shadow of a good story in Stony Jack and the Lost Jewels of Cheapside but Victoria Shepherd lacks the focus to get there. Just because you've read an interesting factoid about a time period, doesn't mean it's relevant or important to the story you want to tell, and this book is stuffed to the brim full of irrelevant content resulting in a book that feels meandering and underdeveloped.
