With the Gray family safe and sound, and no civilizations facing impending doom, Elise finally has time to take things slow and focus on her next evolution. In order to get the best possible evolution options, Oberon, the king of the fey offers to train her, and she accepts, not realizing what exactly she is signing up for.
Forced outside her comfort zone, Elise has to get creative in order to keep moving forward and improving. She takes on new identities, meets new people, makes new friends (and enemies), and overall has a rather chaotic time trying to become the best fey she can be.
Meanwhile, she keeps her eyes ahead, preparing to attend Jelor University for the fall semester.
This is incredibly boring and I quit about a third of the way in. It devolves into fae random nonsense with no direction. The side characters are still flat and completely unmemorable. Two and one third books and I still have no idea what the overarching story is meant to be.
Pretty much nothing happens in this book. Elise does go through her evolution to 5th tier, but there's no actual plot development. Worse, halfway through it turns into a "magic school" book, and not one of the interesting variants on that. It's just Elise going to lectures, most of which get described as "boring" and nothing more.
In fact, there are a couple of times when the author starts what looks like it's going to be a subplot, and then nips it in the bud. For example, Elise wins an auction for a mysterious artifact, and then she has Oberon hide it because it seems scary. After which, it never appears again.
I don't see myself continuing to read this series.
This third book in the series seems to be mostly about setting the scene and introducing the characters who will be active participants in book four. There is a bit of interesting introspection and character development for Elise, but no major conflict. Fun read, but not as good as book two.
What a great series. I cannot wait for the next book !!! Secrets, intrigue, monsters does it get any better than this. Oh yeah did I mention the rabbit ! A great read man.
