Theology for the Unwanted: Reclaiming Your Place in God's Church

Rate this book
There are many LGBT Catholics who find it difficult to reconcile their sexual identity with the traditional Catholic teachings and resources available to them at their parishes. The author has observed from personal experience and years of pastoral work that many of these “unwanted” Catholics authentically believe in the traditional conservative values espoused by their parish and find them meaningful. Therefore, if LGBT Catholics and former Catholics are to find any peace and acceptance, they need to go deeper into their faith. Catholic theology can offer many of the answers they are seeking.

Using the tools of conflict analysis, scriptural reflection, and the LGBT affirming theology that is becoming more common in Europe and Latin America, A Theology for Catholics on the Margins provides readers with a practical path to understanding God's love for them. To help readers discern the difference between cultural and disciplinary lenses, the book defines theology as a simple expression of a greater “reality” and explains that God is the source and summit of all reality. From there, readers can rediscover meaning in the gospel and through all the unique qualities with which God created them. This new approach helps theology to become more credible in the modern world and more easily understandable to Catholics who are struggling with their sexuality. Ultimately, the book points to the new pastoral methods being carried out with the Vatican’s permission in Belgium, where the bishops are proving that LGBT relationships can be structured and appreciated in a Catholic context that allows all the faithful to accompany them.

From the very first page, the author speaks directly to the soul, guiding you as if he’s listening to your confessions and offering heartfelt advice drawn from his personal experiences.

In Theology for the Unwanted, Daniel C. Tillson navigates the complexities of belonging to the Catholic Church, sharing his personal struggles as a gay, devout Catholic while celebrating the beauty and community found in God's embrace.

Though I’m non-religious, I found this exploration impactful and insightful for anyone, regardless of faith. Tillson addresses marginalized individuals such as LGBTQ+, divorced and remarried people, singles, and more, while acknowledging the church's challenges and emphasizing its traditions and potential for growth. He encourages authentic living and self-acceptance, reinforcing that everyone seeking God is a valuable part of the community.

“If you’re feeling unwanted or struggling with faith, I encourage you to read this book. It is a book of hope, and it is written to help you recognize your loving place within the heart of the Church precisely as you are.”

This was a really heartening and encouraging read for me, a transfeminine non-binary sapphic Catholic in a committed relationship with a woman. I came across it just as I was questioning if there really is a place for me in the Church. I know there is, and this book helped me better understand it. my only complaint is that it talked about LGBT Catholics but focused solely on sexuality. I would have liked more relating to gender identity and expression but I see how the insights are translatable and transferable. I highly recommend this book to any queer or trans Catholic who feels unwanted or relegated to the margins of the Church.
