The walls were built to keep the monsters in.
But some monsters are made, not born.

Within the Waywards, the condemned live beneath the watch of the seven Witchlords—keepers of order and jailers of the Dark Natured. Elora has endured three long winters behind those obsidian walls, bound to servitude for a crime she did not commit.

To survive, Elora minds her own, follows the rules, and never speaks to any of the Witchlords.

Until him.

While the premise of Blackheart sounded interesting, I was disappointed in the execution. I really wanted to love this, and was hoping it would get better as the story progressed, but sadly did not.

Anytime there is a dark fantasy set in a prison/jail, I already want to love it. Add in a unique magic system, and I'm sold. The plot, however, is where it lost me completely. There was so much opportunity for this story, but it eventually became a copy and paste of any other romantasy out there, with an FMC who learns her whole life has been a lie and is actually someone really important, and has to embark on this journey that could get her killed. Add in useless love interests and bam, I am no longer interested.

When the FMC learns of her true identity, she goes along with it SO EASILY. She believes everything she is told, sacrifices her life and her normalcy, without questioning any of it! Also, it was SO stupid how the king had no power over his kingdom? He says the council and his wife are preparing to rage war, therefore Elora must embark on this journey to prevent it...?? He's the literal king! He can stop it himself lol it was such a plot hole, and used only to drive the story forward. While on this journey, Elora also makes very dumb decisions. She's traveling with one of the love interests, but they always end up leaving each other alone, and one of them either goes missing or gets caught. But like, all of it could have been prevented if they stayed together, especially since Elora just learned of her true identity! So stupid!

Now, the romance? Lack luster :(

I strongly dislike when it's obvious who the male love interest is, but the author adds in another love interest just to stir the pot, or try to create conflict/tension with it, because it usually never works. It doesn't help that both of the love interests never had a genuine relationship with her to begin with. There might even be a third love interest, with how the villain is portrayed, but I really hope not. Also, one of them was her best friend's fuck buddy? That's weird.

Also...

EVERY. SINGLE. MAN that Elora meets wants her. ALL OF THEM. Every side character that is male was lusting after her. There were at least 6 different men that got hard at the sight of her. Most of the female side characters were jealous or snarky or hated Elora, and I despised that! I wanted less male attention and more female empowerment.

The writing wasn't necessarily bad. Not at all, and I especially think the epigraphs before each chapter was written very well and added lots of information about the world. What I didn't like, however, was that this was supposed to be a dark fantasy, but the dialogue felt very modern (Elora even uses the phrase 'finger banging') and a lot of the fight scenes had a sense of "humor" to it, which didn't make it feel dark or dangerous at all (their prison is being under attack, but Elora has to point out that her best friend is giving a BJ in the same kitchen she eats in).

On top of that, a lot of the high stake scenes ended way too quickly! Their city would be attacked, or someone would get stabbed, but the next scene would be Elora drinking tea with the king, or serving drinks at the bar. I wish we saw a little more emotional impact.

I really wanted to like this, but unfortunately I didn't! I wish I had DNF'd but I was hoping the story would get better.

FIVE STAR READ!!

Blackheart is a beautifully written Dark Romantasy that dives into the grey space between victim & villain, & at it's core tells the story of resilience, & finding strength even in the most unlikely places. I absolutely devoured this book & have so much love for our FMC, Elora.

From the very first page, I was hooked. The plot is fast paced & engaging without ever feeling rushed. The worldbuilding is rich & immersive, without being too heavy. The found family moments woven throughout added so much heart & made the story feel even more real. & I loved the unique magic system, the different natures & their magical abilities were a fresh twist on typical "fantasy powers" without being confusing.

Elora is such a complex character, often times she struggles with a lot of self doubt, while still being brave, resilient, sassy, strong, & at times a little unhinged (in the best way). I loved seeing her growth throughout the story. Also, the romance was perfectly paced, nothing felt rushed or overly “insta lusty”, but we didn't have to wait through the entire book for the romance to progress. I’m so excited to see where that storyline goes next.

There are so many secrets, betrayals, & unexpected twists that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time reading. & THAT ENDING!! I AM UNWELL.

Overall, I absolutely adore this book, & would recommend it to any lovers of Dark Romantasy. I was lucky enough to beta read this one, & I already can’t wait for the next book in The Blackheart Saga.

After reading so many dark romantasy books it really takes a lot for a book to draw me in so thoroughly that I’d sit a read 500 pages in a day, but this book absolutely did it! There were so many twists that I did not see coming whatsoever, the magic system was unique, the Blackheart magic had me picturing Venom in my head the entire time..yes the alien. The overall plot was so well rounded, and well executed. Unlikely hero’s, and found family, this book kept me on my toes and guessing what was to come the entire time. An absolutely fantastic debut novel! I don’t want to to into much more detail because I believe for a full experience you really need to go into this blind, just know it’s dark, and the revenge is setting up to be rewarding

Hi, and thank you for reading :)

Blackheart was inspired by what it feels like for me to have BPD and is filled with quiet tributes to my grandmother's Choctaw heritage. I never expected anyone to read it, much less thousands of people. This was my first book, and I'm so excited to write many more.

BLACKHEART is Elora’s story. Obvious perhaps, given her main character status, but Elora’s ownership of our attention goes beyond simply being the narrator. It’s in the way her agency shines through even when she’s faced with little options. It’s in the narrative voice so strong, you’re left with no choice but to experience the highs and lows of her journey alongside her. Yet, she is distinct from the reader. She makes choices I wouldn’t make in her position, trusts people I wouldn’t — but that’s the beauty of Elora’s character. She knows who she is, despite all the different labels given to her, and in spite of everything she’s been through. And we know her as well. We know why she feels the way she feels without it needing to be spelled out explicitly on the page. We see how her mistakes and insecurities stem naturally from her past experiences. From how high her walls are to how badly she’d like for them to come down, Elora shows us every facet of herself whilst carefully guarding her heart from the other characters. Her narrative is a complex painting of self-doubt and defiance, making her one of the strongest heroines I’ve encountered.

This complexity extends to how Elora navigates her relationships with men, both personal and political. As strong as her narrative voice is, to her, it’s the men in power who are not only leading the conversation but making the decisions. She’s placed in an open-air prison by a man, because of a man. She’s labelled by men. She’s used by men. She’s treated as both worthless and worthy by them. And yet in spite of this, she does not yield. She uses their underestimation of her to her advantage, even when there is none to be gained.

What excites me most about BLACKHEART is
how much potential there is. Although Elora already handles herself well, there is still a lot of room for her to grow over the course of the trilogy. I can’t wait to see how her confidence develops, as well as how she navigates her potential romances. Together with a vibrant supporting cast of intriguing enemies, loveable allies and an undercurrent of distrust that makes you questions the intentions of all of them, BLACKHEART is set up for two epic sequels.

With the main hook coming in at around 25%, I do think there is room to trim the early chapters without losing any of the story’s impact. As immersive as the world of BLACKHEART is, I initially found myself almost waiting for the plot to kick into gear — I knew something big was coming, I just didn’t know when.

Overall, BLACKHEART creates a rich world that feels cosy despite the death and danger. It’s a world you feel drawn in to, one you want to fight for, full of emotional ups and downs — from moments you’ll laugh about, to dialogue you’ll cry over, to the plot twists you’ll never see coming. With out-of-this-world world-building, a complex heroine you’ll fall in love with and a captivating plot, BLACKHEART leaves you desperately wanting more.

This is truly one of the most interesting books I have read in some time. If you are getting sick of the same old tropes in romantasy/Dark fantasy, then give this book a try. It's truly unique in so many ways. I was enraptured from the first page to the last because I truly didn't know where this book was going. Anyways, this book has fantasy elements, a unique magic system, some romance, and the beginnings of what promises to be a really twisty, political drama. The heart of this story is the main character and her mental health journey. Elora has some deep rooted issues but her journey is so inspiring. I related to her so much (too much even). I think hers is a story that will stick with so many people.

put this on your calendars for December folks! you need this in your life!

*edit to add that this book just gets better and better every time I read it. I fucking love this book

There are a couple of things that are frustrating me regarding this book.

First of all, this review section is full of people who are very obviously ARC readers that can’t/don’t write informative reviews. I’m not sure what goes on in this situation.. either people just like to be encouraging and supportive (which is wonderful in other circumstances), or they aren’t allowed to write anything critical. I don’t know, but it’s incredibly frustrating when I’m trying to investigate a new book. I have triggers that I want to avoid and very specific random requirements at the moment. I’m not under the impression that books revolve around my reading needs, but in a review section this large, I’d expect to see some variety and honest rambling here and there. Just like this. Not exclamation marks, all caps, and declarations of undying adoration.

No book is 100% compatible with 100% of the audience. If I can’t find specific information, I’ll either just refuse to read it, or I’ll read it and write a scathing review when I get upset. That can be prevented by a few informative 3 star reviews. Forcing reviews to act as advertisements doesn’t do anyone any favors. I don’t even bother reading those things.

The main issue though is the love interest in this book. We’re led to believe that it’s the witch-king guy. However, I’m at 32% and it’s very obvious that at least one of the guys will be the one *who has been fucking her best friend for 3 years.*

I just have to wonder.. why?? What the actual fuck?

When I come across content that I don’t like, I try to see where the author was coming from. Cheating is a mega trigger for me, but it’s also something that a lot of people actually like in their romances. I can understand that. I still don’t want to read it, but I get it.

This though? It isn’t cheating. It isn’t kinky in any way. It’s just gross, and it’s really not something I can move past. I can’t begin to understand what went through the author’s mind when creating this scenario. It’s so unnecessary.

Sex is very transactional in this story, which helps some. She has fucked 2 people to achieve certain goals, and that doesn’t bother me so much. The aforementioned BFF was a prostitute, and this MMC apparently didn’t have feelings for her, but he spent all of his free time with this woman (for 3 years!) and we are treated to a scene with her giving him a blowjob. It wasn’t bothersome at the time, because what author in their right mind would build a love interest that way?? Well it’s bothersome now.

I finally dug deep into the very bottom of the reviews and found a couple of low scores, and they site this same reason. So im not the only person who is grossed out by this. And I’d guess that this isn’t an accurate representation of the percentage of people who would be bothered by this.

If I’d been able to find this sort of info easily, I would have known better than to start it, and you’d have avoided a 2 star review.

All this being said, I don’t expect the *majority* of people to share this opinion, and this might be a lovely book if that sort of thing doesn’t bother you. I’m not here to tear apart the author’s work. In the big scheme of things, even I can see this is a minor concern regarding the quality of writing. I haven’t come across anything terribly egregious just yet (though we came really close to the FMC being TSTL for a minute.. but it worked itself out well enough). But I do want other potential readers to have the opportunity to pass this by if they need to avoid an unpleasant experience.

God-tier of god-tiers. Exceptional writing with a fast-moving plot that never feels rushed or boring. The action scenes are some of the best I’ve read in a long time.

I loved Elora, Ansel, and honestly all the side characters, every single one. This book reads exactly like Elora’s journey: it starts out caged and careful, then ramps up as she finds herself.

The way Elora experiences and copes with the prejudice against Blackhearts is painful in the best, most meaningful way, and it deeply shapes her actions and emotions.

I loved literally everything about this book and can’t wait for more.

Wow this was amazing! I am vibing with the whole blackheart magic that felt so unique 🖤 this is absolutely perfect for the dark Romantasy girlies if you want something to captivate you right from the beginning to end.

I enjoyed how fast paced this felt and not one second did I feel myself losing interest. The author knew what she was doing by grabbing our attention with the unique magic system, world building, and plot twists that you would not be expecting throughout the book.

The vibes gave me venom mixed with death eaters 🖤

This was a phenomenal read that I was not expecting. Firstly I’d like to the author and her team for allowing me an ARC in return for an honest review.

I will preface everything by saying that I only do reviews that are at least a little funny, and that while what follows may sound absurdist, this is a phenomenal fantasy series debut, and if the ‘romantasy’ genre can sometimes turn you off, I promise, you’re still going to love it. So without further ado…

Elora is the textbook definition of “going through it”. Orphaned. Imprisoned. Too inhospitable for a brothel…
She is trapped in the Northern Wayward because of a magic she didn’t ask for with the world’s worst best friend, said friend’s absolutely fit distraction, a grabhandsy imp, a shameless flirt, and of course, a stoic, brooding, suspiciously involved Witchlord, who’s spared her once, and improved her circumstance just a little.

Until suddenly she isn’t. And she’s set on a quest to free and improve the lives of those still trapped in Wayward, while fielding the interest of the aforementioned distraction, Witchlord, and new hot bombshell in the villa, a micro-dosing vampire (Sapphire) prince?

It has admittedly been a while since I’ve been able to pick up a fantasy book that I truly enjoyed. Blackheart was a breath of fresh air. While marketed as a romantasy, this book didn’t fall into the trap of an overly trope filled read. The world building was vibrant and unique, and the book was incredibly well paced throughout. I have no idea what witchcraft went on to pack so much into a book under 500 pages, but I’m not complaining.

Firsts in a series, while admittedly not as difficult as seconds, are challenging to write. How much to include, to give away, making sure to give the proper time to settle in with the characters… Pixie seems to struggle with none of it.

We see so much expansion of the world, growth of the characters, and the formation of believable bonds between characters. There’s never a moment where the dynamics feel rushed, or like development is happening off-page. Yet even with this there were plot twists that got me pretty good.

If I were to get knit-picky, it takes a chapter or so for the writing to settle into a cohesive voice, and there can at times be a bit of a battle between a familiar tone and stiffer/ formal vocabulary. I think this is common for a lot of fantasy writing and it improves quickly as the author settles in with her characters.

Overall I am desperate for book 2. I devoured this in under 24 hours but the characters are going to be on my mind for days after this. I can’t wait for everyone else to get to read it!

This is the debut novel for the author and I was absolutely blown away! I would call this a dark, dystopian, fantasy romance novel. The romance is a sub plot in this book yet there is still a ton of angst and tension. The story focuses on the FMC Elora, who is a Blackheart. A Blackheart is an individual with blood and tears that can be deadly if they are threatened or enraged.

In this novel, there are dark-natured folks like Elora and light-natured folks. There are two potential MMCs Lord Ansel and Riven. Both are different types of individuals in the walled society of this world. There is a classification system between light/dark natured folks where the dark natured folks are looked down upon and forced into poverty/ the walled city. This book has reluctant allies to lovers, adventure-based travel with lots of issues arising, self discovery, hidden backgrounds and experiences, and tons of twists and turns!!

I went into this blind and it was SO worth it so I am not going to spoil. If you enjoy a powerful, determined FMC and a dark, dystopian fantasy romance novel with a plot that you never know what is happening next, you should absolutely check this out!!

Thank you Pixie Rella for the opportunity to BETA read this masterpiece.

A 5 🌟 review from my heart to yours: Blackheart by Pixie Rella

I don’t say this lightly: Blackheart found me at the exact moment I needed it.

From the very first page, I felt myself being pulled into Elora’s story in a way I didn’t expect. It wasn’t just reading — it was witnessing someone else’s pain, strength, confusion, and stubborn hope in a way that reflected pieces of my own. Elora’s journey of self-worth and self-discovery hit me harder than I could’ve prepared for. I laughed with her, cried for her, and carried her emotions with me long after I stopped reading.

She’s unlike any FMC I’ve read before — not because she’s the strongest or the bravest, but because her strength feels real. It shakes. It questions. It grows. I saw so much of myself in her desperation to understand who she is in a world that insists she’s too much, too dangerous, too wrong. And watching her fight against that broke something open in me.

The magic system is so original and so deeply tied to identity that it made every moment feel meaningful. It’s not just fancy powers — it’s part of who these characters are, for better or for worse.

And the dynamics with Riven and Lord Ansel? I didn’t expect to care so much, but the connections Elora forms with them feel emotional, complicated, and magnetic in ways I’m still thinking about. They each bring out something different in her, something raw.

By the time I reached the last page, I actually sat there in silence. The cliffhanger isn’t just shocking — it’s the kind that leaves your chest tight and your brain screaming for answers. I wasn’t ready for it, and now I’m counting the minutes until the next book.

Blackheart wasn’t just a story for me. It was an experience — one that reminded me that strength looks different on everyone, that outcasts still deserve to take up space, and that sometimes the most powerful magic is simply choosing to survive.

If you pick up this book, prepare yourself. You’re not just entering a story. You’re stepping into a world that will grip you from the inside out.

5 Stars!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Blackheart completely ruined me in the best possible way! I’ve beta read this book multiple times and yep… I STILL cry every single time! Elora feels like someone cracked open my chest and put my whole personality on the page. The way she fights, doubts, breaks, rebuilds… I felt so seen it was actually rude.

The worldbuilding? Rich and addictive without dragging. The magic system? Unique and so easy to fall into. The pacing? Fast enough to keep me feral without feeling rushed. And the found family moments and that slow-burn-but-not-annoying romance?? I was kicking my feet!!

And let’s talk about that CLIFFHANGER and the EPILOGUE!!! I was gasping, screaming, pacing my house like a gremlin. Pixie really said “I’m going to ruin your life” and then did it with a smile. I need book two like yesterday!!

If you love dark romantasy with heart, chaos, and a heroine who refuses to stay down then you need this book immediately!!

**I beta read this book for the author Pixie Rella. Thank you for this opportunity! All opinions are my own and I am leaving this review voluntarily. **

I really thought I was going to like Blackheart.
And while reading it, I kept trying to like it, I really did.

it's safe to say I didn't.

Blackheart had everything it needed to be good; Plot twists, world building, interesting ideas, all the ingredients were there, even some okay character's. The problem is the execution was so messy that none of it actually worked. Things happened too fast, twists showed up without any real build up, and the story never slowed down long enough for anything to actually matter.

The pacing reminded me of those Percy Jackson books I read as a kid, where it is just one thing after another with no pause. And listen, those books were my childhood, so no hate. But in this book that same pacing just made the story feel rushed instead of exciting. With better execution, this could have been a really strong story.

And the romance… I genuinely stopped trying to understand what the author was doing.

Every man in this book wanted Elora. Every single one.
At first I thought I knew who the love interest was supposed to be, but then the story suddenly decided to entertain another romance plot that felt completely unnecessary. Then another man shows up and something gets hinted at there too. And then another. By the time the story was halfway through, every male character might as well have been a love interest. I stopped trying to figure out who I was actually supposed to care about, because it felt like every time the plot slowed down, the solution was to throw in another man.

Miss Rella, I am going to hold your hand when I say this, but when has adding another man ever made anything better?

And Elora herself… if there were a competition for the most insufferable main character, she would take first place.

This book really could have been good.
All the pieces were there, the story just never figured out what to do with them.

FOUR - STAR READ!!
Blackheart is a beautifully written Dark Romantasy with a powerful story of resilience. I devoured it and absolutely adore our FMC, Elora. I felt such a connection with the way her mind works

The plot is fast-paced and the worldbuilding is easy to follow. The magic system is so unique and I loved that our FMC Elora came in to her own while using it. She was scared and rightfully so.. but at times when she used the magic I was like WTF lol

Elora is a complex, she is so so brave, and absolutely unhinged at times, BUT watching her grow was incredible.
The romance wasn’t my favourite - u wasn’t sure about the love interest at all. Although it wasn’t rushed it kinda wasn’t my favourite. There is a very very small love triangle and although I hate that trope, this was so small that it is needed in the book and you will understand why as you read it.

The book has secrets, betrayals, and twists that I did not see coming and was pan the edge of my seat.

The ending left me unwell… who … what… why

If you love Dark Romantasy then This one if for you.
I was lucky to be given an arc to read it and already can’t wait for the next book in The Blackheart Saga.
Thank you so much to the author

I really enjoyed Blackheart and it is such a bingable page turner, perfect for a reading slump! Overall I think the writing was really great and the magic system is so interesting. The only thing that I didn’t completely love was the romance. It lacked depth and tension and I think if it had have been built on more it would have been more believable. There’s parts of the plot that felt a little rushed too which leads me to feel it may have been better in two books but overall I had a really good time.

After the ending I’ll definitely be giving book two a go when it comes out 🖤

Blackheart by Pixie Rella is not a book you simply read—it’s a book that claims you.

This story exposed my wounds and somehow stitched me back together all at once. I felt comforted, understood, angry, confused, scared… and completely obsessed. Long after turning the last page, it still lives in my chest, replaying over and over like a heartbeat I can’t silence.

The pain in this book is profound. Not exaggerated. Not performative. Real. Pixie Rella’s writing is raw and poetical in a way that makes your heart ache quietly, the kind of ache that feels personal. Every word felt intentional, every moment heavy with meaning. My heart genuinely wept.

Elora is everything. A morally grey FMC who feels deeply human—flawed, messy, yearning. I saw so much of myself in her that it almost hurt. Her wants, her struggles, her quiet strength lodged themselves inside me. She isn’t written to be perfect—she’s written to be real, and that’s what makes her unforgettable.

The characters as a whole are perfectly imperfect. They breathe, they hurt, they make choices that feel painfully human. The pacing is immaculate—not rushed, not dragging—just enough to keep you turning pages while your emotions spiral.

This book is for readers who love fantasy with teeth. For those who crave morally grey heroines, emotional depth, and stories that don’t soften their edges to make you comfortable. Blackheart is powerful. It did not come to play.

If you’re ready to feel everything—be warned: this book will not let you go.

Was this a literary master piece? No. The beginning felt like every fantasy cliche was chucked in and it was a little chaotic.
But considering I came here after obsessing with a streamer who makes Disney characters fuck each other on The Sims, nothing was off limits.

And the second half was SO FUCKING GOOD! You lose a star because I didn’t know you would be a sequel AND THAT CLIFFHANGER! SIR!

Also, a special shoutout to the best line of fiction ever written

I love pixie and everything she does!!!! She is an excellent content creator and when I heard her book was being released I had to get it and read it. Let me tell you I couldn’t keep it down, every chance I got I picked it up and read it. It kept me on the edge of seat. My mouth hitting the floor from the plot!!!! Excellent read and I can not wait for the second book to come out!!!! She is my favorite author and content creator of all time!!!

I have been in a reading slump for the last almost year, having only finished a couple of books in 2025. I was so enamored with this story that I housed the entire thing in a day. Please read this, you will not be disappointed. Thank you Instagram algorithm and shrek sims videos for brining me to Pixie Rella and these amazing characters. I can’t wait for the next one 🥹
