Finding four soul-bonded mates should be a blessing for a magically incompetent witch, except they have no clue who or what I am.

Nobody does.

Not even me.

Officially, I don’t exist. At least I didn’t until I accidentally set fire to a farmer’s market. That’s when I’m sent to Starfall Academy for the most powerful magicals, where students hone their skills and learn control.

Alaric Vane is the son of the Mage Council leader. A storm mage with a serious attitude problem who enjoys making my life miserable when he’s not sending my magic haywire.

Zane Vanyx is the last of his kind, the only son of an insane mass-murderer. Everyone’s afraid of the incubus, but he’s taken to stalking me, which is concerning.

Maverick Wilder, our bear shifter PT instructor, is huge, fierce, and strangely protective. He claims he’s my mate, which can’t be true because faculty and students are forbidden from fraternizing. And that includes being naked together in his office after hours…

Kai Seathorne is a shy, sweet merman, and one of the few students who doesn’t make fun of me. I’d love to get to know him better, but in our elitist society, witches and lesser magicals don’t mix. Or kiss.

Sadly, my confusing love life is the least of my concerns.

I can’t afford to let my guard down.

Not with vicious hellhounds hunting me.

---
Witch Fire is book 1 in a new paranormal why choose series. It is a MFMMM magic academy romance that's slow-medium burn in book one and the female main character will not have to choose between her fated mates. This book ends on a cliff and is perfect for fans of Eve Newton, KC Kean, and Morgan B Lee.

I wanted to read something easy in this genre, and that's what I got. This is nothing new to the genre, but it was fine enough. The FMC is a bit TSTL, and the writing is a bit juvenile, but it was mildly entertaining.

A big 5/5 stars for this read!

Tropes:
✨ Fated Mates
✨ Paranormal Academy
✨ Why Choose

Plot:
Raven, a sheltered witch, is spending a rare day away from the farm when she accidentally starts a small fire at the farmer’s market. She’s rescued by a handsome bear shifter and surrounded by a team of mages who force her to attend Starfall Academy, where she’ll spend the next three years learning to control her magic. But as she struggles to adjust to the world she was once hidden from, she’s quickly pulled into chaos, danger, and a pile of soul bonded mates.

My thoughts:
I absolutely loved this book! Raven is such a bright ray of sunshine. Even when she was scared and cornered, she still tried to kill them with kindness. I loved watching her confidence and relationships grow. I loved Zane! I have a biiiig weakness for incubi, especially the slightly unhinged ones. 😍 Maverick stole my heart too, his protective, fierce nature made me melt. The way his bear always wanted to make sure Raven was safe, warm, and fed made me smile. I am growing to like Alaric, but I’m definitely hoping for some heavy groveling in his future. I also can’t wait to learn more about Kai and Rasmus. I absolutely adore Raven’s familiar, Kenji the Kitsune. Every time he appeared he had me giggling and laughing out loud. I really hope he gets more page time in book two because I can’t wait to learn more about him.

The plot hooked me from the start and kept me guessing the entire way through. I loved trying to piece together how everything connected, and I can’t wait to see the larger role Raven and her mates will play moving forward. That cliffhanger absolutely wrecked me, and now I’m eagerly awaiting book two.

A massive thank you to Lyra Mishon and NetGalley for providing me with this ARC for my honest review! I can’t wait to read more by this author. ❤️

Good start some FMC development
This is a good debut novel, although it’s a common storyline I found it gripping and was eager to keep reading! I really want to find out what makes our FMC different and pretty sire that cliffhanger is leading there 😁
The men are different to each others and have some substance to them and can see there will be further character development (looking at the Mage 😳😅) it is insta lust/love for some so it does move pretty quickly 🔥 the only thing I think is for the FMC is she’s a bit up and down and not quite sure what her core personality is. She’s also been kept away from civilisation for pretty much her whole life and some things she questions but others it’s just like she’s always understood so I think that needed a little more clarity to her responses. Other than that she was rather amusing with her kill them kindness attitude 😂 overall I did enjoy this and will be looking for the next book 😀

I received this as an ARC & I am so grateful for the opportunity!
This is book 1 to the Starfall Academy series & Wow! did it set an amazing tone for the rest of the books! I was hooked from the get-go, the story/plot drawing me in immediately!
The FMC is likeable & smart with a witty, relatable inner monologue & the MMCs are fine AF, funny & I loved being able to read from their POVs.
The academy setting, the magic system, and the world itself are easy to follow along with while having just the right amount of detail to keep the pace enjoyable without being too much to keep track of. I never once felt like I was missing something or wondered what was happening. The depth of detail was well balanced with the pacing of the story!
I will warn ya, there is a cliffhanger at the end of this one, so be prepared!
All in all, it's safe to say, I can not wait to find out what happens next!!

Definitely give this one a read! 10/10 recommend!

Wow I loved this book so much. A witch named Raven is taken from the only home she’s ever known and thrown into a magical academy. She quickly learns that she has mates, not 1 but 5. Maverick - a burley broody possessive Bear shifter. Zane - a sneaky Demon hunting Incubus that reminds me of Leon night and Sin wilder mixed together. Yessss please. Alaric - A powerful mage with status and baggage. Kai - a soft spoken merman crown prince and a thought to be extinct vampire she seems in her dreams. She also bonds a familiar - a hilarious foul mouthed supernatural fox with an attitude problem. Ravens background is a mystery that is slowly starting to unravel. The cliffhanger at the end was rude but it made me all that more excited for book 2. I have a feeling this series is going to be one of my top favorites.

🌍 𝕎𝕠𝕣𝕝𝕕 𝕓𝕦𝕚𝕝𝕕𝕚𝕟𝕘, 𝕨𝕣𝕚𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝕡𝕒𝕔𝕚𝕟𝕘:

This was a quick and fun read, it got its hooks into me right away and had intrigue in a bucket fulls. The world building isn’t detailed, but it’s good. It’s a simple read and easy to follow but the writing style shows that it’s a first novel. This series offers real potential as the author clearly knows how to grab your attention and keep it.

One of my favourite parts about the book is that the author gave us multiple POV, seeing through different eyes gave me all the feels and brought those strong emotions straight to the forefront. Mishon also knows how to write a reverse harem full of yearning and angst potential. I imagine the spice will increase with each book and I cannot wait to learn more about those piercings.

This was a very fast paced read which kept me on my toes the whole way through- I genuinely didn’t want to put this down. The academy setting, the magic system, and the world itself is really easy to follow along with and lose yourself too. There were some predictable elements with satisfying conclusions and there was so many mysteries and questions arising as you continued to read that only book 2 can answer.

Some elements felt a little rushed and not fleshed out- particularly the reverse Haram and how quickly the mates were introduced, as it felt like they were crammed in all at once under a time restraint. Having so many important characters revealed in such a quick succession didn’t give us time to create those emotional bonds meaning the romance side felt a little shallow and surface level in parts..

I’m happy we get so many mates to enjoy, and one of my favourite troops is reverse Haram, especially when -like in this book- all of the mates had completely different personalities, strengths, and weaknesses, and were all separate supernatural beings. I think because they were all so different I wanted more time to breathe and learn about each one. It would’ve been great to develop a stronger connection to their weaknesses when it comes to her, plus their individual circumstances and their own history, along with their strengths and true feelings.
it would’ve been great to get some more law around the different species too.
Now the groundwork has been laid I’m hoping book 2 will give me all these things I so desperately want, I do like being left with questions but not at the cost of character development and understanding. Basically the bones are there, The ideas are incredible, and the flesh has started to form, but then it feels like the author was given a one week deadline to complete the book and so she was forced to rush through it giving us just enough information to make it a good story when it deserved more time to become a great story.

All in all There was the main plot, there was the relationship drama, there was sub plots, and there was the School. These were the bones of a truly brilliant five star read, although I thoroughly enjoyed it and have now read it twice it’s a little heartbreaking that it didn’t get the depth, character development and detail that it needed. If you’re into low fantasy or after an easy to read laid-back supernatural School than this is absolutely for you but if you want complex characters, epic world building and unpredictable twists you may possibly be underwhelmed.

🧝‍♂️ ℂ𝕙𝕒𝕣𝕒𝕔𝕥𝕖𝕣𝕤:
I love how we have a strong cast of side characters and I’m a sucker for a great best friend. I really appreciate that the best friend has her own personality strengths and weaknesses and I can’t wait to learn more about her too.. speaking of best friends the Familia -Kenji, brings sarcasm and banter in bucketfuls. I’m not sure yet if it’s funny or belittling as he seems to straddle that line, I’m hoping for funny because a Familia should be a best friend, a confidant, and you’re number one fan, but I suppose it’s another thing we’ll find out as the series continues.

I love how the main FMC is a mystery even to herself she sheltered and naive but so kind and a genuine ray of sunshine but has no clue about her past or her magic. And I love how innocent she is which lends itself to a genuinely good read when it comes to her mates and how they’re all so much more experienced… well, once they realise they are all her mates and will have to share that is! A gorgeous, grumpy, overprotective bear shifter who does NOT want to share, a lust fuelled incubus who only wants to share, and then there’s the rejection of a third mate and the mystery surrounding the 4th… all great characters so far and I love how they act together and clash when it comes to her!

😥 𝕎𝕙𝕪 𝕟𝕠 𝕗𝕚𝕧𝕖 𝕤𝕥𝕒𝕣𝕤?
Because I enjoyed it so much I just wish there was more more background more history more law more relationship detail more character development just more an extra hundred pages would’ve been perfect for me but this is just a personal reason. There is nothing actually wrong with the story.

⏳ 𝕎𝕠𝕦𝕝𝕕 𝕚 𝕣𝕖-𝕣𝕖𝕒𝕕 𝕠𝕣 𝕣𝕖𝕔𝕠𝕞𝕞𝕖𝕟𝕕?
I’ve already reread it so yes, and I will absolutely recommend it over and over again. It’s one of my favourite books.

🪧𝔽𝕚𝕟𝕒𝕝 𝕥𝕙𝕠𝕦𝕘𝕙𝕥𝕤:
This is a highly entertaining light fantasy romance with simple world building fun, magical intrigue and plenty of mystery. It’s packed full of your favourite tropes and looks like it’s going to get spicier with each book. You absolutely need to stick this on your TBR if you want a simple easy to follow spicy magic Academy.

⭐️ DNF

⭐️⭐️
I managed to finish it but it was rubbish. I won't keep a physical copy and won't recommend it, but  it's a shame as the plot could have made a good book in another author's hands

⭐️⭐️.5
It was OK. I wish I didn't start this one as it didn't do it for me as I struggled to read it. It had an interesting premise that fell flat but I had to see what happened in the end.

⭐️⭐️⭐️
I don't regret reading it, and I will read the next one, but this one did have a few flaws. [These could be repetitive writing, gaps or plot holes, better character growth or world building, areas needing more detail]
Generally, the book lacked depth and became confusing. The plot resonated with me even though it annoyed me on the whole.

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
I'm glad I read it. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to the right people, but I wanted more! Sadly, it's easily forgettable with a few issues I just couldn't overlook/get past.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Good book! I loved it, but... I needed more! I really did enjoy it, but it had a few parts that needed more detail or added history/background or lore. But that's because the story or characters were memorable, and the plot was strong with brilliant twists. I would re-read if I needed to catch up for the next book and would recommend.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
Great book! I truly wish the story had been thought about more, or the author had been given more time as this book is so close to brilliance! I will likely read again and will definitely be recommending it to all!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
WOW! Absolutely amazing book! Well written with great characters and a plot so memorable that it will stay with me. I will definitely read this again, I will be recommending it and sharing it with the whole world! Also- I NEED A PHYSICAL COPY!

🔥⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🔥
This is my God level tier. The book must be perfectly memorable. Even after reading 50+ more books, I will remember character names and emotions along with the plot. If there is a special edition, then I need to own it! If there is a conversation on books- I'm talking about this!

 SPICE SCALE:
🌶️– segsual language and a little on-page action

🌶️🌶️– a lot of segsual language and some on-page open door action, may be occurring a couple of times

🌶️🌶️🌶️– a lot of explicit action and dirty talk, occurring frequently with 2/3 lurvers

🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ – super graphic and explicit, occurring 4 or more times, can be more grey and taboo themed.

🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ – Kinks and Fet!shism, explicit and super graphic. It is likely to be tushy play, toys, playrooms, and more dark / taboo fantasies and realities.

This book is an absolutely amazing why choose and I cannot wait to get my hands on the next one. The banter between the characters are absolutely amazing. The story follows Raven as she meets her soul-bonded mates.
There will be spoilers below!

I love Raven and how she keeps Zane in line and Maverick from killing him. Her build with Kai is sweet and slow. He bond with Alaric is fire and ice and I can’t wait to see how they come crashing together. As for Rasmus I can’t wait to see what happens there.
I’ll set the stage and let you have a preview of what you’re getting into!

Imagine going to the market, meeting a bear shifter who your instantly connected magical with, then in a blink of an eye all your being taken by magical law forces. Forced to an academy where now you are the weakest mage in a group full of mages who want to kill you. You find yourself around incubus who wants to seduce you, a mage who thinks that you’re an absolutely annoying obnoxious girl. All while having dreams of a yummy hot vampire, who is locked away telling you that he needs you to come find him as soon as possible because he doesn’t know if he’s going to survive much longer.
Oh and that bear shifter yeah well he shows up at said academy as the new PT teacher!

My immediate reaction when I finished was that this is possibly one of the most chaotic stories that I’ve read in a while. But I mean that in the most loving way possible, because I was locked in and having a fantastic time on this roller coaster ride.

This is a why-choose paranormal romance, which was already enough to sell me on the story. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of depth this author is building. Because yes, there was romance. But there is also some incredible political intrigue/magical race supremacy set up that was absolutely fascinating and has incredible potential. And it sets the stage for multiple mysteries layered into the overall plot line.

I will say that because there is so much that happens, sometimes the story was a little overwhelming. Sometimes it felt like too much was being jammed into the first book of a series. But I also found myself not caring. I very easily accepted the chaos because it was fascinating and fun.

I don’t normally make comparisons to other books in my reviews, but the style and tone heavily reminded me of the Ruthless Boys of the Zodiac series (and probably Zodiac Academy, but I haven’t read that yet). It’s very frank and straightforward, almost irreverent. It takes things from the real world and gives them cheesy magical-version names. There isn’t poetic, lyrical, or flowery writing. I actually really enjoy this kind of style. I think it fits well with the kind of story the author is building.

The writing itself was passable. There were absolutely things that could have been improved, but the mechanics were solid enough. There pieces that didn’t seem to flow or felt too cringy, but it wasn’t overly distracting. Those are flaws that I suspect will improve with experience and time.

I genuinely enjoyed all of the main characters. Some of the side characters were a little underdeveloped, but there’s already so much going on and such a large overall cast that I don’t need or want everyone to be fully fleshed out, honestly. But the stories developing around our main cast are gold. And I was extremely happy that the male main characters are distinct from each other; I could tell which POV I was reading without needing to check.

Overall, I gave this 4 stars. Chaotic, messy, definitely not perfect, but a thoroughly fun time. I was excited enough about the book that I’ve already told friends about it, so it’s absolutely something I would recommend. I am desperate for the next book and to see how this story develops.

Good

WARNING! Cliffhanger! This one probably rates a 4 or 5/5 on my scale. Four for those who saw it coming, and just want to read more, five for those who were a bit surprised! Either way, you will have to wait for more story.

Raven was a sheltered nineteen year old, never let off of the compound on which she was raised, until an incident with her magic led to her being taken to Starfall Academy for magical training.

There she meets the males who are her fated Soulbound Mates, and begins to learn all the things a normal upbringing would have taught her. And maybe, she might actually bond with some of her mates…

Raven is an intriguing blend of naïve innocence, and righteous anger. She has a rather grey sense of morals, (fairly common in the fantasy universe I find) which can be an amusing thing at times. We have met four of the five soulbound mates the story has given us so far, and although she knows who the fifth is, there are complications!

Maverick is an intriguing shifter character. I love that he’s a huge Kodiak bear, and he definitely has teddy bear tendencies- though he can also be fierce.

Zane is a complicated character. As an incubus, he’s rather tricky in temperament, but his story is enough to explain just why he’s the way he is. He is incredibly powerful, and I don’t think we’ve seen the full extent of what he can do.

Alaric is both secretive and complicated. His background has shaped him, and he’s struggling against the bindings his father has around him. He’s a formidable mage, and I think it will be interesting when he finally gets to align himself with Raven and the others.

Kai is a complicated character we don’t see as much of in the book as I would like, and I am hopeful that we learn a little more about him, and Raven’s fifth in the next book.

Kenji, Raven’s kitsune, is a holy terror with massive secrets. Possibly related to exactly who Raven is, which we will also hopefully get answers to in the next book. That being said, he’s by far the funniest and cutest character!

Glynda, Raven’s new friend, seems to be a good person, and although she is definitely “lesser” to the elite, she’s smart and powerful in her own way. Contrastingly, Willow, Raven’s childhood friend, seems to be much less trustworthy, and I wonder how that will play out.

Ultimately, this is an engaging book, with likeable and interesting characters. There are quite a few steamy scenes, though the spice level is maybe three out of five peppers, it is definitely going to ramp up in the future. There is an interesting background plot, with several different stories playing out, and I’m also looking forward to learning more about those too!

All in all, an entertaining read and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series and seeing where it goes.

This is a good choice for RH Academy/RH Fantasy enthusiasts.

This was such a fun, chaotic fantasy academy ride with a solid setup that definitely has me intrigued for the next book. Think Zodiac Academy meets reverse harem in progress—but lighter on the bully, heavier on the magical political conspiracy and slow-burn soulmate tension.

The premise hooked me right away: a magically “incompetent” witch raised in an isolationist cult accidentally sets a market on fire and is thrown into a magical school full of elitist jerks, political corruption, and wildly powerful beings. She thinks she’s a nobody. Plot twist? She’s soul-bonded to five of the most powerful magicals in existence—so clearly not a nobody.

The worldbuilding has potential—there’s commentary on power dynamics between magical species (vampires already wiped out, shifters next), and a political system that feels on the verge of boiling over. Our girl is thankfully not down with the systemic oppression, and while the social tension doesn’t go super deep yet, the setup is there for future stakes to really hit.

Tone-wise, this leans on humor and school drama instead of heavy angst. There’s some light bullying and setup for rival-girl drama (including the dreaded arranged marriage to another woman trope, which, thankfully, hasn’t been fully unleashed yet). It’s giving “early book one” energy—like we’re still assembling the cast and learning the rules before shit really goes down.

As for the romance? We’re technically in RH territory, but it’s early days. Only one of her mates is actively into her—everyone else is either denying the bond, actively avoiding her, or being low-key hostile. So don’t expect harem dynamics just yet. What’s missing is the deeper emotional connection—right now, interactions with the love interests feel more “scene filler” than slow-burn yearning or real tension. I need more angst, more growth, more why are they meant to be energy. If the soulbond is such a big deal, give me scenes that feel like it.

Still, I loved the premise and the chaos of discovering her powers and place in the world. The female lead has a bit of the “blank slate” problem early on, but it works in the context of her being raised in isolation and trying to find herself in this new world.

Final thoughts: great bones, fun banter, solid magical setup. If book two deepens the emotional arcs and gives us more mate development and stakes, this could be a new go-to series for fans of fantasy academy with RH flair and lighter vibes.

Will I keep reading? Absolutely.
Do I need at least one mate to stop being an emotionally constipated idiot in the next book? Also yes.

4.5 Star Review: Witch Fire by Lyra Mishon

Genre: Dark Fantasy Romance • Witchcraft • Slow Burn
Tropes: Hidden powers, reluctant allies, witch on the run, hunter and hunted, ancient bloodline secrets, sentient magic, prophecy threads, slow burn tension

Witch Fire is a beautifully wicked blend of danger, mystery, and magnetic chemistry that refuses to let you look away. Nerina is the kind of heroine you root for instantly. She is powerful in all the ways she doesn’t yet understand, and the moment her witchfire flares to life, you know the entire world is about to shift around her. Kael as the conflicted hunter creates a tension that simmers under every scene they share. It is restrained and electric and makes every encounter feel like a match dropped in dry tinder. The world building is rich without being overwhelming and the magic system feels alive, especially once the witchfire begins responding to Nerina’s emotions. My favorite part of the entire book is the first time Kael witnesses her true power. The whole moment crackles with heat, fear, and awe, and you can practically feel his loyalties twisting. It is the perfect spark that changes everything, both for him and for the plot itself.

Light Triggers: violence, pursuit and hunting, magical coercion, references to genocide of witch bloodlines, emotional manipulation by authority figures

The only reason this is not a full five stars is because a few early scenes feel a little rushed compared to the slow burn unfolding later. Once the story hits its stride, though, it becomes impossible to put down. Mishon writes tension like a blade against the skin, sharp and intimate, and the final chapters left my pulse racing. If you love witchcraft, dangerous magic, morally conflicted hunters, and heroines who discover their strength under fire, Witch Fire is absolutely worth your time. It left me hungry for the next book and already obsessed with this world.

#WitchFire starts with the FMC, Raven, a young witch raised by Adam and Willow. While she’s at the market one day, chaos breaks out when her stall catches fire, but that’s not actually the main issue. The real problem starts when a man named Maverick shows up, a bear shifter who claims Raven as his mate. Raven is then separated from Maverick and sent to Starfall Academy to learn how to control her magic. That’s where she’s pulled into a world and a story she never imagined for herself.

🧝𝑨 𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒆 𝒇𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒔, 𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒗𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒔. 🐺
And yes, there’s a lot going on. Some parts are funny, while other parts feel a bit messy and hard to connect. Still, since this is Book 1 of the Starfall Academy series, I’m giving it a chance and hoping the author explains more in the next books.

💞𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒎 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒍 𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆.
I do have some issues with this trope, but I get it, it’s fantasy. I’ve read books like this so I kind of know what to expect. That said, Raven really collects mates like it’s nothing. 😅 Yes it has been destined to be with her, but when Raven turned out to be destined for five mates..kak Nita choked! 😂

🔥 𝑰 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒔𝒆𝒆 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒄𝒉 𝑭𝒊𝒓𝒆 𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒍𝒇.
Even though Raven is supposed to be the witch fire, where things burn when she’s angry or happy, I wish the author had explored this more, especially Raven’s inner conflict, instead of focusing so much on who she’s going to end up mating with. So sorry about this. It’s just my honest review.

Overall, I do want to continue with the second book because that cliffhanger was seriously evil. It’s fast-paced, has a lot happening, and is an okay for me, entertaining read. Thank you @netgalley for the arc.

Unputdownable, so addictively fun.

Starfall Academy Book 1

Fast-paced, spicy, and entertaining
I was grinning like a fool as I read this book. I was thoroughly entertained by this fast-paced, spicy Why Choose Paranormal Romance. Supernatural beings set in a modern-day magic academy with a fun exciting plot and amazing characters I was hooked from beginning to cliffhanger end. Lyra Mishon truly created an amazing world that had my heart from the start.

Raven is such a BA FMC she's a witchling. She doesn’t think she's very powerful but let's be real we all know she's gonna have truly amazing powers. It's unusual enough to be soul-bonded to not one but four different kinds of supes.

Maverick the bear shifter yummy grumpy lumberjack looking beast of a man wants nothing more than to protect his fated soul-bonded mate.

Alaric the powerful alphahole mage. He's got that bully-obsessed thing going on.

Zane is an incubus and the cutest stalker ever. IYKYK.

Kai, oh sweet Kai. He's a merman and somehow his kind is considered a lesser magical! (I know!)

These four MMCs could not be more different from one another but their common ground is their fated mate they must come together to protect her from the hellhounds that are hunting her.

I absolutely loved how each of the MMCs was introduced and met with Raven. They had some of the best banter.

I'm so eager for book 2 in this amazing series. Fans of all things supernatural and magical will enjoy this fantastic why-choose romance.

Thank you NetGalley and Lyra Mishon for the opportunity to read this eARC.

Lyra Mishon’s Witch Fire is an engaging and atmospheric beginning to the Starfall Academy series—a world where magic, mystery, and emotion intertwine in beautifully captivating ways. From the opening pages, Mishon immerses readers in a setting that feels both otherworldly and relatable, where young witches navigate not only the intricacies of magic but also friendship, rivalry, and the search for belonging.

The author’s world-building is a particular strength. Starfall Academy itself is vividly imagined, with its shadowed halls, ancient spells, and the ever-present hum of power that seems to pulse through every scene. The details are rich without ever feeling overwhelming, allowing the reader to fully step into a realm where danger and wonder coexist.

The characters are equally compelling. Each brings their own complexity and charm, with personalities that clash and complement in ways that feel authentic. The hints of romance and personal growth woven through the story add emotional depth, while the central mystery keeps the tension simmering.

If there is one minor critique, it’s that certain pacing moments could have been smoothed out—some scenes rush by where a little more time would have allowed the tension or relationships to deepen further. Still, this doesn’t detract from the overall enjoyment or the clear promise of the series.

Witch Fire is a spellbinding and confident start, filled with heart, intrigue, and the spark of something truly special. Lyra Mishon delivers a story that balances youthful wonder with mature emotional insight, leaving readers eager to return to the halls of Starfall Academy for book two.

Discovering what's outside the compound you lived on

First off I absolutely love Raven. She is so clueless but so eager to learn everything she possibly can. This story starts with her having snuck out of the compound she grew up on. Unfortunately Chaos is bound to follow our little witch who has been told that she is weak and the little magic she has is chaotic so they keep her locked away.

Enter Maverick who finds her in a burning tent and immediately grabs her and proclaims she is his. He is a Kodiak bear shifter who is broody, protective and possessive. When his mate is taken to Starfall he becomes a teacher there so he can keep her safe.

Next we have a run in with Alaric a storm mage with Daddy issues who can't let anyone know who the witch is to him. We also have Zane who is a demon hunting incubus that likes to stir the pot. However, he sees more than anyone gives him credit for. Kai is a soft and quiet merman who is usually alone in the pool. He is a crown price but very few people know this and he isn't sharing it. Lastly we meet a vampire in Raven's dreams. It is thought that vampires were extinct and this one is not in a good way.

Plus we get to bond to a very foul mouthed kitsuni familiar that had me laughing every time he popped up. Raven is bullied on campus for being weak, showing up late to the semester, and for having uncontrolled magic. However, we do find a great friend in another outcast witch.

This story is just getting into the thick of things and I am hooked. I absolutely can't wait to see what happens next. This book ended on a cliffhanger and I'm ready for book two.

Your future awaits you at Starfall Academy!

To say this book was good, would not do this story enough justice. It was a fantastical whirlwind of chaos and I loved every second of it! A highlight for me was the cool names used. Taken from the bad*** bank of names! They fit these characters so well.

Raven has been in the dark about her past and who/what she for all of her life. When she gets into a spot of trouble, alerting Security for a task force designed specifically for the Magic Community. She’s taken to Starfall Academy, where she can learn to safely hone her powers. Along the way she finds friends, enemies and mates…. they keep popping up left and right. Ooh la la, she has a lot of them ranging from Mages, Shifters, Mermen, Demons and Vampires! It’s a real party, especially when you throw in her sassy fox familiar. Between her friends, Glynda is good for Raven, and Willow… whenever she’s around it seems like she always has a secret agenda. Raven needs to follow her intuition. She knows something is off, but without the whole picture being revealed or being thrusted into new, urgent matter her senses kind of get overtaken and she loses focus. That cliffhanger has me very anxious for what comes next for Raven and her men.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. However, I really enjoyed this book, so in support of the author I purchased a copy and preordered the next book. Can’t wait to read the continuation, set to release late January 2026. Also, at the end of the book you get a freebie novella set in the same world. Happy Reading!!!

This was a quick and fun read about a witch who is far more than she realizes. But, at this time, as readers, we don't even know what she is. We know Raven is sheltered and naive, and really can't do much with her magic because she has been kept hidden and not educated. But all of a sudden, her magic is running wild, and she gets taken to a magical college (against her guardian's will) to learn how to contain her magic before she hurts someone.

Raven is special, though: she's soul-bonding multiple mates, the strongest of each species. And now the demons are after her? The plot really took off at the end with a huge cliffhanger that really leaves you wanting to know what happens next. But, throughout it was somewhat slow in development because we switched to so many different POVs that we didn't get a chance to really get to know anyone well just yet. Personally, my favorite character is the incubus. But I do like Raven, as well, because she's just so compassionate and friendly, unless someone has shown themselves to be a mean girl enemy. The book is spicy and lusty, while the main character still acts like a teenager. Some parts of the book felt repetitive between some of the characters, and there was little time for romance, only lust and calling each other "my mate." This was definitely a fun start to a series, and I can see it progressing into something exciting.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

The premise of Witch Fire is immediately engaging, with a mix of magical politics, multiple fantastical beings, and soul-bonded romances that promise intrigue and drama. The worldbuilding shows real potential, and Mishon’s depiction of magical hierarchies, elite factions, and looming threats makes the setting feel alive.

Raven herself is a charming protagonist: bright, kind, and determined to find her place despite being out of her depth. Her familiar, Kenji, adds moments of levity that balance some of the darker, more tense scenes. There are flashes of humor and suspense throughout, and the story ramps up nicely toward a cliffhanger that leaves you curious about what comes next.

That said, some elements felt overdone or rushed. The frequent use of terms like "my mate", for example, made parts of the romance feel formulaic, and it feels almost as if several classic MMC clichés were crammed in at once. With multiple love interests introduced in quick succession, the emotional connections don’t always have time to breathe, which can make the romance feel a little surface-level in spots.

Overall, Witch Fire is an entertaining fantasy romance with solid worldbuilding and fun magical intrigue, but it leans on familiar tropes and sometimes feels a bit chaotic. It’s a good start to a series, and I’m curious to see how the characters and their relationships develop in the next book.

ARC Review of Witch Fire by Lyra Mishon
* * * * *
A fantastic new series that will have you eager to dive into this magical world of the supernatural, secrets, families, romance, and destiny.

Raven was a young sheltered witch with more power than she realised. When one little whoopsie at the market place has her in the spotlight and sent straight to a special academy, she's thrust into a world she does not realise was so much more complicated.
Between the intense classes, jerks, near death experiences and demons springing up in her life...there are perks.
A protective shifter who is more teddy than bear.
An incubus that carries more secrets than anyone could comprehend.
A massive a-hole mage who she is unable to ignore.
A quiet illusive merman who bares his own weighted life.
Not to forget the vampire prince who fills her dreams and is running out of time.
With these men at her side, her new friends, a questionable kitsune and chosen family...will they be able to help her when trouble really comes knocking?

Very interesting read and so happy I took a chance on it. For those who want a nice serving of reverse harem, supernatural, drama queens, horny monsters and lovable big men who are jsut perfect to cuddle with.
The cliffhanger has me eager to get the second book and know what is it about Raven that has her so special, on top of the already noticable list of items.

🌟 3.5 stars 🌟

This was a fun and fast paced, why choose romance. If you like Jasmine Mas, Jaymin Eve, or Zodiac Academy/Ruthless Boys, then you’ll probably enjoy this too.

Raven has been kept hidden from the world her entire life until she unexpectedly starts a magical accident and is forced to enroll at Starfall Academy. She has much to learn about witches and other magical creatures, in addition to figuring out her chaotic magic. Plus, a bear shifter claims to be her mate, while she’s also attracted to an incubus, mage, merman, and vampire. Throw in demonic attacks and Raven’s got one hell of a first year at Starfall.

While this ends on a cliffhanger, the cliffhanger itself was pretty predictable so it didn’t feel as devastating when it happened. The story is easy to read and enjoyable. Raven and the guys are likable, with Kenji being my absolute favorite! There isn’t a lot of complex world building, so if you’re looking for something lighter and spicier, this is a perfect fit.

I’m hoping the next book will develop more of their character arcs and relationships as it’s feeling a little one dimensional right now. There are some interesting plot lines happening within the magical community and how Raven and her guys fit into it all. There’s so much potential that I’ll definitely be reading book 2 to see what else happens.

Thank you to the author, Victory Editing, and NetGalley for the advanced copy.

Raven doesn’t technically exist in the magical realm but due to accident she is sent to Starfall Academy but meets her first soul bonded mate maverick and claims her as his who follows her and becomes to pt teacher. Maverick is a bear shifter and his bear soul purpose is to claim her and protector

She meets her 3 other soul bounded mates alaric who is a high elite mage to protect Raven from his father finding out hes soul bonded he ignores her or gives her a hard time while secretly pining for her. Zane is an incubus last of his kind took an instant shine and stalks raven always appearing when least expected. His wit had me laughing through out the book when he taunts maverick but also is helping to protect Raven. Kai is a merman and is shy and is trying to avoid raven but is drawn to her. Raven figures out she also has 5th bond to a vampire who could be the last of his kind shes determined to find him and safe him from extinction with help with her other bonded mates. Raven also saves a kitsune called kenji and he becomes her familiar hes witty blunt and secretive shes the only first year in a long time to bond with a familiar.

The ending ends on a cliff hanger where a demon enters the winter solstice ball and tells her time to go home

I really enjoyed this book and i cant wait to read the next book

Witch Fire is a fast-paced and intriguing start to what could be a fascinating series, but it definitely had its ups and downs. The story felt a bit jumpy, with random pieces of character information dropped in rather than naturally discovered through the plot. While I was invested in Raven’s journey, I often found myself confused by how events and character details unfolded.

For someone who has been sheltered her whole life, Raven’s sudden boldness and insta-lust felt a little out of place. I also wish her time in the compound - and the impact it had on her - had been explored more deeply by both her and the people around her. It’s a big part of who she is, yet it’s barely touched on.

That said, the story still managed to keep me hooked. Raven’s main power seems to be “kill with kindness/act dumb,” which honestly made me laugh more than once. The unexpected plot twist at the end was a nice surprise - especially since there was a subtle hint earlier in the book that I only noticed after the reveal.

Overall, Witch Fire had great potential and some fun moments, but it could have benefited from smoother pacing and stronger character development. I’m curious to see where Lyra Mishon takes the story next, but I’m not in a rush to grab book two just yet.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Huge thank you to Lyra Mishon for the gifted eARC in exchange for my honest and non spoiler review! My review will also be posted on book sprout!

Witch Fire is a pretty fast paced fantasy why choose romance that follows the story of Raven, a girl that normally isn’t part of society but ends up being placed into starfall academy in order for her to find her place in the magical world. Along the way, we meet her multiple love interests who are all different classifications of mythical and magical beings as well.

Overall, this book was a pretty decent read. I really love a good why choose romance and this one definitely did have that element to it. However, I personally wasn’t able to fully establish connections within all of the mates that were introduced. Since this story is fast paced, the meeting of the mates and everything was fast paced as well with not much time to fully explore each one. I am a very character driven reader so while I found Raven and her mates to be pretty good people, I didn’t get to explore them as much as I would have liked too. That being said this is the first book so I’m hoping that we get to learn a bit more about the characters and see more growth and development in future books to come.

If you are looking for a fun, quick read to dip your toes into the magical fantasy genre, then I feel like Witch Fire is a good place to start!

The author is new and it shows with her immature writing style. Not as in writing about fart jokes, but her writing lacked depth, quality and development.

This story is so very similar to many others already published under the KU umbrella.
FMC is slut shamed; people hate her for being a nobody; shifters are assholes; she has two mates that are assholes, but she still feels compelled to help/talk with them.

There's not a lot of plot happening here. The story just jumps from scene to scene and nothing gets developed. The magic system seems standard and not well thought out; the world building is underdeveloped; the academy and her mates are also lagging in character advancement.

The bear MMC treats the FMC like a child; the incubus MMC sexually assaults her and is just annoying; hell, even her familiar is annoying as fuck.

FMC's nicknames/terms of endearments used:
Witchling, little witch, sweetness, mate, sweetling, pet, sweet Raven, sweet summer witch, little mate, birdy, baby, sweetheart, my sweet mate, and of course, witch.

Of course, FMC has a pretty pussy and begs all the time during sex; oh, and gets called a good girl, Can't forget those cliches.

It just so boring because a book exactly like this has been written so many times before and it's just as boring as they were.
