Three years after her kidnapping by a notorious assassin, Belle McBain, enjoys her life in Jersey City, running a successful private investigator firm with her best friend, Osmond Banks.
Until someone tries to kill her.
When the police find her unconscious body in Northern Manhattan, they discover near her there are two shallow graves. One with a fresh corpse, the other of skeletal remains. Was she to be the next victim buried? Belle believes she is someone's target, and as she joins forces with a homicide detective, she finds a connection between herself and the fresh corpse discovered.
After three years in hiding, Belle's brother, an assassin, returns. And it seems the past isn't going to remain in the shadows forever. As the investigation progresses, she learns people are keeping things from her.
Faced with scarce leads in the investigation, Belle questions if they can find the person who tried to kill her and committed the murders before there is another victim, until a mysterious phone message links a two-decade-old missing person mystery to the case.
And to her.
Before it's too late, will she and the detective figure out the killer's plan? Or will a terrified and panicked Belle lose what she holds most dear? Can she survive the shattering truth that follows?
Angela Bennett is a registered nurse in Florida and New York City—her passion for reading, especially crime and mayhem novels like Lisa Gardner’s D.D. Warren series, along with J.T. Ellison’s Taylor Jackson and Dr. Samantha Owens series, inspired her to start writing.
Her debut novel, Dark Road Home, is the first in the Belle McBain series.
A native of Minnesota, Angela and her husband, along with their spoiled dog, live in Florida, New York City, and Italy. Away from her writing, Angela loves to cook, take long walks by the sea, sip Italian wine, and, of course, read.
This is the second book that features Belle and Os. Joseph who is Belle's brother and also a hit man is back from hiding to do a favor for a friend. This time around Belle is attacked by an unknown person while talking to her nephew on the phone. Little do either of them know that what has happened to Belle involves her brother indirectly. While Belle is trying to figure out who and why she was attacked all she can remember about her attacker is that the person had red lips. Meanwhile Joseph is tracking down the person that attacked his friend's daughter. There are so many twists in the story and it all leads back to one place.
I have to be honest as there was 2 different story lines going on at the same time and I was confused the author tied everything at the end of the book but the story continues with the bang of an ending.
