A little more than the first half is told largely from the POV of Ky Luc. He’s been pretty in the background most of this story so I was cautious about his prominence here. But his focus allows us to see the pain of immortality and the worth of death which is something some of the vampires have wanted. But we haven’t really seen a true perspective on it until here and it’s nice. The second half sort of mirrors the first half in that it’s another vampire taking center stage (Ferid) as they battle humans with extensive time spent on their backstory and how they view immortality and similarly want it to end. As a whole the volume is full of flashbacks and fights. It’s not terrible though it’s a bit rote when packaged together with Ferid’s second half not really adding anything to the exploration of immortality. Feel free to ignore the rest of the review. It's mostly just a plot beat by plot beat retelling with some opinions to help me remember what's happened in-between volume releases.
Ky Luc v Ferid, Guren, and Mahiru’s battle continues with multiple flashbacks throughout. The flashbacks ultimately flesh out Ky Luc as a person without purpose intrigued by those with them. His own purpose of “always get stronger” is unfulfillable and with a bit of a complex. It comes from being an heir with no chance to the throne. He winds up a slave after his mother’s death until he takes the throne back through murder. Then we see a bit of a montage of his vamp life continuously battling and following Urd merely for being interested that he has a purpose. I guess the idea of someone bored with no purpose from immortality (and a very vague and ultimately never fulfillable one from when they were human) is interesting. But it also sort of doesn’t make sense and feels like a real retcon that somehow Ky Luc is also stronger than a third progenitor who also has absorbed powers from other vampires (Ferid). Anyway then Ky Luc ends up dealing with Shinoa’s group who just turns him into a demon because she’s uber-powerful now that she’s absorbed Shi / The First. This ends up also letting her into Rigr and Urd’s ideas, Urd’s want to finally die, and where Yu is.
We see the tense relationship of Guren and his friends with Ferid. Turns out Ferid’s master plan is running out of time as Guren helped him be able to devour vampires at the cost of eventually turning into a demon (which is now down to ten days). He has a secret ace in his hole though where he’ll be uber-powerful once he fully devours all the vamps he’s gotten. What follows is more of Ferid’s backstory as we learn he was kept as a head in a jar as part of Rigr’s failed Mikaela revival scheme.

I tend to catch up with manga at the end of the year, but the issue is I kind of forget everything plot related. I didn't like anything I saw in this volume, I'm kind of disconnected from some characters.I hope the next one is better.
