A HAZARDOUS HOMECOMING...A mysterious disease has broken out in Tina's onetime home colony--and the dilapidated orphanage where Tina herself grew up has been ransacked for medicine, food, and water. Hiro and his crew might be able to ward off the infection with formfitting protective suits, but can they offer any help to the residents of the colony?
It seems possible that clues found in the orphanage may actually allow Dr. Shouko to develop a treatment for the infection. But what else Hiro and his crew can achieve may come down to Hiro's personal meeting with colony governor Hartmut...

An enjoyable read that fitted expectations. Hiro and his crew have to deal with an epidemic and the social chaos that comes with it which comes with the usual violence and harem shenanigans (although at least no infighting and a MC that at least works on said relations). Hiro has a relatively easy time, and there is the expected cringe in the usual area, but that is nothing new. Makes for a good popcorn read, but if you don't like these things, how did you get this far into the series?

In the life of the space merc, no good deed goes unpaid. Pirate extermination. Terraforming operations. Escort missions. Cash contracts are the name of the game. REBORN AS A SPACE MERC v14 throws in a new-old wrinkle: supply transport. Too bad there's a pandemic going on.

Captain Hiro and the crew of the Black Lotus resolve to take their spoils from the Arein System out across the stars and sell them for a tidy profit. Not a bad idea. The ladies are increasingly comfortable with the rhythm of the ship, its frequent encounters with danger, and their captain's increasingly pressing need to throw money at cool stuff (e.g., weapons, gear, ship addenda). So, why not do something in the name of the public good? It's about time Hiro put his reputation front and center, isn't it?

The Rimei System is currently weathering a pandemic (poorly), and the local populace could desperately use an array of medical resources and health care devices to fend off death at every turn. When the Black Lotus arrives on the scene, keen to sell its wares and help the people, the crew quickly finds it is up against more than an airborne illness; the crew has to fight off impoverished gangsters and reconstituted crime syndicates, outmaneuver awkward nobles, and more.

REBORN AS A SPACE MERC v14 doesn't have much going for it, but makes a play for subtlety, an attempt for which its author is mildly successful. The Rimei System is a network that houses Tina's former home colony, a fact that begets an array of sensitive (and mopey) conversation about the perils of growing up in tough times, the difficulties of leaving home, and the further challenges of returning home years later.

The novel nudges Hiro toward cutting a more complementary figure. He bargains with the local governor, threatens assorted gangsters, and makes good on his promises to the underprivileged in a bid to secure the health and safety of the lower class. Tina's old friends are in dire trouble, certainly, but the circumstance pushes Hiro to wield his higher status, his excessive fortune, and his uncompromising strength in service of the people who need it most. Thematically, REBORN AS A SPACE MERC v14 is a humble piece of work. The author doesn't lean too heavily into articulating how or why, and is content to let the characters' actions speak for themselves (e.g., taking out a drug warehouse, eliminating corrupt officials), but the current volume is an interesting moderation of pace and character in a novel series about a lucky guy with a harem among various strange and strong sci-fi exploits.

Another amusing addition to this series. This time Hiro has to step in during a mushroom pandemic on a space station. Also, he was always pretty OP, but the psionics have pushed him over the top into Sith Lord territory.

I have been on a space isekai kick lately so the release of volume 14 of Space Mercenary was timely.

Hiro felt more like a psychopath then ever in this volume. Not every protagonist needs to be sympathetic.

I feel like at some point this could happen sooner. I don’t know why they keep dragging this out.
