In the graphic novel adaptation of SPACED OUT by Stuart Gibbs, Dash faces another mystery on Moon Base Alpha, the colony on the moon where he lives with his scientist parents. After defending himself from a pair of space tourist siblings who are bullying him, Dash is called into the base commander’s office. During their meeting, she gets a message and ends the meeting abruptly. She goes missing shortly after, with Dash being the last person to see her. Dash and the rest of the crew on the base spring into action to figure out how a person has gone missing from the moon base and who or what is behind the disappearance.
The story moves at a fast clip, incorporating humor into the science fiction themed mystery. Illustrations help to reinforce the relatively tiny space of the moon base at the center of the action. While this is the second installment in the Moon Base Alpha series, there is sufficient backstory provided about the mission and the characters for readers to follow along without having read the first book. Gibbs fans will delight in the graphic novel version of the space themed mystery.

Stuart Gibbs is a "forever favorite" of mine, and like all the others, this book does not disappoint.
I've been very pleased with the 'translation' of Gibbs' books into graphic novels and they have been readily grabbed by my 3rd-5th grade students. The graphics and flow of the story are great in this edition, and students who are interested in space will snap this book up immediately.

This was an enjoyable middle grade graphic novel. I loved the characters as well as the illustrations in this story. I liked getting to know the characters more in this installment and following Dash as he works to solve the mystery of the missing Moonie. This space centered mystery is a fun read, great for middle grade readers.

August 21, 2026Ah, this book is so good! I love the facial expressions and illustrations. I can't believe I have to wait probably 1-2 years for the 3rd and final one to come out. (Yes, I know I could just read the print novel.)
