She only packed for a flying visit. Now she’s stuck with no flights, no hotel and no plan B.
Anna Lundholm was only supposed to be in Copenhagen for a few hours. Just long enough to tie up some loose ends, grab one of the city’s famous hot dogs and be on her way. No stops, no distractions, no goodbyes.
Until a snowstorm grounds her flight.
With the beautiful city at a snowy standstill, Anna turns to Jamie – a gorgeous Scot with an open door and a raised eyebrow.

Set in Copenhagen, this captivating story beautifully captures the city’s scenery and customs.
Anna, accustomed to her mother’s impulsive relationship changes and constant relocations, grew weary of moving and making friends. This led her to stop trying altogether. Fed up of leaving place to place on a whim, she decided to stay with her grandparents while her mother continued her nomadic lifestyle.
Ironically, Anna becomes a travel writer, allowing her to travel while staying connected to her roots in Copenhagen.
She was in a long-term relationship she thought was perfect. However, one day, forgetting something, she returned home to find her boyfriend and best friend there doing the unthinkable. She didn’t confront them but made her presence known.
Later, she packed his belongings and moved to London. Initially, she believed leaving was the best decision but was it?
Determined to rent out her cherished childhood home, she flew to Copenhagen occasionally. Each time, she returned to London the same day except this time the weather cancelled flights.
While grabbing a snack, she accidentally landed some food on the back of a scowling man’s coat.
Feeling stranded as everywhere was booked, she headed to her home, hoping the tenant wouldn’t mind her staying. To her surprise, the scowling, incredibly handsome man opened the door.
This unexpected encounter marked a turning point for Anna. She embarked on a journey of self-discovery, exploring her motivations for her constant need to flee when things became difficult. What she thought was a solution to her problems turned out to be a cycle of running and never finding closure.
Wuhuu, Danmark!!
3.5-4⭐️ A COPENHAGEN SNOWMANCE was cozy and cute and perfect for readers looking for a Scandi escape this holiday season!
The story follows Anna as she returns home to Copenhagen for what’s supposed to be a quick errand. Naturally, a snowstorm grounds her return flight and she finds herself stuck in a city she used to love full of people she’s trying to avoid. She eventually meets a hunky Scottish man named Jamie and… well, you’ve probably read enough romance novels to see where this is going!
I can admit that the main reason I enjoyed this book so much is because it was truly a love letter to Copenhagen, a city that until very recently had been at the tippy top of my travel bucket list. I was able to visit last month and I’ve been day dreaming about another trip ever since! If you have no desire to visit Denmark, this probably isn’t the book for you. I firmly believe it was written for readers who are desperate to visit CPH or desperate to return.
The pacing felt a little off at times and the descriptions of this magical city might’ve been a bit heavy handed, but I ate it up with a spoon! I also ALWAYS love a Scot named Jamie and a travel mishap that turns out to be the best thing that could’ve happened!
This one was more sweet than spicy in my opinion! I appreciated the explorations of past heartbreak and grief, as well as moving on after life throws you a few curveballs. Mostly joyful and a tiny bit cheesy, but I’ll caution you that Jamie reveals a pretty gutting story about his mom halfway through.
🎧I listened to the audiobook which was fab! I loved hearing all the Danish words and phrases mixed in and the very talented voice actor (Anna Andresen) transported me right back to the city with her vivid descriptions!
Aggressively Danish. As a person living in Copenhagen myself, it was quite funny to read how many references to Danish foods, drinks, traditions and places Pernille Hughes could shove into one book. It seemed slightly over the top at times, but looking at the other reviews on Goodreads, it seems to work for other readers, which made me wonder ... are the books I love that are set in Paris / Edinburgh / Prague / etc. as heavy-handed as this one was, and I just don't notice, because it's my home town?
That aside, I did quite enjoy the book. It was very predictable, but I expect that in a Christmas romance, and I liked both Anna and Jamie and enjoyed seeing them get to know each other. "Fake dating" and "Forced proximity" are obvious tropes for a Christmas romance, but it still worked, and was a lot less cringe-worthy than it could have been.
Even the third-act breakup worked for once, and wasn't due to a miscommunication, but a conflict that needed to be handled.
So a sweet read, even if highly unrealistic. It stayed true to its own universe, so it worked for me.
I think I need to go visit Copenhagen after reading this festive Scandi treat! Anna is popping back 'home' from London, to say some final goodbyes, and rid herself of guilt, but finds herself stranded in Copenhagen in peak Christmas season. And she cannot leave fast enough. Jamie is a handsome Scot, with whom she has several negative encounters, but who shows more than a heart of gold in the long run. I have always enjoyed Pernille Hughes' books and this one filled with broken hearts and angsty romance, as well as second chances, not with people, rather with places, was no exception. Both characters have been burned in the past, and it takes time, but this slow burn romance is a gorgeous read, as we see them grow their friendship into something more... but there is always a bump in the road to slow things down. I was fully immersed in the sensory delights of a Christmas in Copenhagen, and wanted to visit all the places mentioned, as well as most of the delicious-sounding food and drink!
3.5⭐︎ rounded up Fun typical romcom fare - generally enjoyed. Wish I’d read this *before* my Christmas weekend away in Copenhagen because some of the treats/pastries mentioned in this story sound amazing and I didn’t get them but will remember for if I ever go back…
3.5 stars. It’s rare that I’ll give above a 3 for a holiday romance but this one is particularly well done. It’s not particularly thought provoking which is why it’s not a true 4, but it’s well worth the time spent reading it.
Well reading this book has certainly put a trip to Copenhagen on my bucket list. This is a novel worth all the festive feels. It has great characters and a heart warming plot that will draw you in, envelope you and keep hold of you until the final page. Only one caveat: do not read this book on an empty stomach. The descriptions of danish delicacies is certain to get your mouth watering. A fab five star read. Thank you to NetGalley, Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter and the author for the chance to review.
A COPENHAGEN SNOWMANCE was my first Christmas read of the season and it’s an absolute cracker! I was immediately transported to a wintry Copenhagen and enveloped in snow, hygge and all the delicious treats on offer during the festive season. The sights and sounds of this Scandinavian capital resonate throughout, but the main draw is the incredible chemistry between the heroine Anna and Scottish hero Jamie. They both have a lot of baggage and at times this seems like an insurmountable obstacle, but love always finds a way and I was left with a big smile on my face and a happy sigh. If you only read one Christmas story this year, make it this one!
Quite good; good enough that it makes me want to seek out Hughes's other books.
Anna lives in London, but needs to pop over to Copenhagen to pick up her cat's ashes; she had left town abruptly a year-and-a-half earlier. Unfortunately, she finds herself in a Snowmageddon situation, trapped in Copenhagen due to a snowstorm, hotels all booked up by trapped travelers. So she winds up at her house--which she is now renting to Jamie, a Scotsman, who takes pity on her and lets her stay.
There's a level of complexity to the characters here that I appreciated. Jamie isn't The Perfect Man; he's made mistakes and he makes mistakes with Anna. Anna has a lot of baggage from her childhood (as does Jamie) and her recent heartbreak. She's in some denial about her life, which makes her a bit frustrating, but in a completely realistic way.
Even the situation itself made sense; the combination of a huge snowstorm and pre-Christmas travel means that it absolutely makes sense that Anna wouldn't be able to catch a flight back for a while. Anna and Jamie both treat the other with some caution at first, as one would when dealing with a perfect stranger. Their relationship built in an organic way, and as a destination romance book, this is aces--you will want to visit Copenhagen and eat all of the food described within. And even though the sex happens off-screen, as it were, Hughes wrote the sexual tension incredibly well; it honestly felt sexier than books I've read where it was all described.
So why not five stars? Some it's vibes, some of it's me being nitpicky. I went back and forth on it being written in the present tense; sometimes I liked it (it felt like a narrator reading the story to me, if that makes sense), but sometimes it grated. Though I loved the descriptions of Copenhagen at Christmas and all the food, the details at times felt a bit overwhelming, with just so many names being mentioned. And even at the end of it, I'm honestly not totally sure how I feel about Jamie; after . I'm not saying that Anna shouldn't be with him, and honestly, given her history, it's not like she's about to jump in and marry him right away.
A bit heavier than some holiday romances, but a lovely escape. Embrace the hygge. Recommend.
This is a fun and cozy romance that is perfect for this time of year. Copenhagen is one of my favourite cities and this book made me feel very nostalgic and took me back to the time I spent in the city last Christmas. The setting is my favourite thing about this book and the author does an amazing job of taking you on a journey through the city. The writing is immersive and the story is packed full of references to Copenhagen, making you feel as if you are there yourself. It’s clear that the author has put a lot of time and thought into it. There are also lots of references to Danish culture and customs and it even taught me a few new things (particularly how Christmas is celebrated in Denmark) which I really liked!
The romance plot was weaker in comparison. I did love the forced proximity and fake dating tropes. There were cozy and cute moments but there were parts that were very unrealistic and even cringey. Same with the writing… I hate to say it but the word ‘foodgasm’ should never EVER be written in a book. I also struggled to understand why the book was written in third person. It wasn’t a major issue but I do feel it would’ve made more sense to write the book in first person as it was such a character driven story.
Speaking of characters, I liked Anna and I enjoyed seeing her growth throughout the book. There were times she annoyed me but there were also times I really respected her, particularly when she’s (rightfully) putting other people in their place. However, I’m not sure how I felt about Jamie as a character. He didn’t have me giggling and kicking my feet and some of his actions and thought processes confused me. Their relationship was very cozy and cute though.
I also felt that the ending was a bit rushed and I was genuinely surprised that it ended when it did. It felt so sudden. I think that the book would’ve benefitted from an epilogue to make sure things were properly tied together and give the reader more closure.
All in all, it was a cute holiday romance that I would recommend to anyone looking for a cozy, festive read this year.
And now I’ve read this, I need to plan a trip back to Copenhagen!!!
A Copenhagen Snowmance (2025) by Danish-British author Pernille Hughes.
A Copenhagen Snowmance is exactly what the title promises: a soft, cosy love story wrapped in snow, candlelight, and the quiet magic of Copenhagen. It’s a feel-good romance that leans into atmosphere as much as emotion, making the city itself feel like a third main character.
★ What it’s about: The story follows Anna and Jamie, two people brought together by chance and holiday timing, emotional baggage, and the slow thaw that comes with connection. As they navigate personal doubts and the fleeting nature of a seasonal romance, the story balances romance with introspection. Anna was cheated on by her husband in Denmark, which made her pack her bags, buy a one-way ticket to London and rent out her house, not intending to come back to Denmark as the memories of betrayal haunts her. But after her cat Pølse's ashes needs to get picked up by the vet in Copenhagen, she travels back 1,5 years later to get the cats ashes and plans on go into the country, retrieve what she came for and then go back to London without getting noticed by any familiar faces. Which is ruined as a snowstorm cancels her flight back to London and forces her to go back to her old apartment. Here she meets Scottish Jamie who is renting the house after he has settled into his dreamjob. Jamie lets Anna stay at the house until the next plane for London is available, but romance starts and past trauma opens up. And her instinct of running away from all her problems is questioned by the insigtful Jamie.
The setting is the standout in the story. Copenhagen’s streets, cafés, and winter calm are vividly rendered, creating a hygge-filled backdrop that enhances the romance. The pacing is gentle, allowing feelings to build naturally rather than rushing toward drama.
I suddenly have a craving to visit Denmark around Christmas, although perhaps with a bit less snow grounding flights than Anna had.
This is a wonderful festive guide to Copenhagen, Danish festive traditions, and to the city as a whole. It's clear it's a city that is closer to the author's heart, and I really felt as though I was transported there.
Anna promises herself that she is only returning to Copenhagen, for a quick visit, she doesn't want to bump into anyone she knows, but had one important thing to do that couldn't be done online. However the weather has other ideas and she ends up hoping that her lodger will take pity and let her stay in her own home.
Of course it just happens to be the handsome grumpy stranger that she has already had a few not wonderful interactions with earlier that day.
But as they start to get to know each other it was Jamie that I absolutely adored. He really is a lovely man, wanting the best for everyone, whereas Anna grated on my slightly as she was so adamant that running away from a difficult situation is the only option, and repeated it so often, it started to a get a bit annoying.
In between that was the pair share a house and time together in the City, including a minor fake dating plot, going viral on social media and a whole lot more, a real connection grows between these two characters.
I really enjoyed seeing just how this would all turn out. It's another really entertaining book from this talented author. I loved it.
Thank you to One More Chapter and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
Anna Lundholm returns to Copenhagen for a flying visit but in her haste to run a time sensitive errand, she has not noticed that a snowstorm is imminent and grounds all returning flights to the UK. Her plan was to fly in, grab some of her favourite Danish foods, scatter some ashes and straight back to the airport to be in London before bedtime. In and out. Finding herself stuck in her home city that has terrible memories for her following a bad breakup, she also can't find a hotel with space and she is completely underdressed for snow too. She still owns a home in Copenhagen though, the only issue is that it now has a tenant that she has never met. Out of any other ideas, she knocks on his door and a grumpy but gorgeous Scotsman answers.
Jamie loves living in Copenhagen, but spends most of his time arguing with his Dad about why he doesn't just move back to Skye and run the family farm. But he is determined to speak to the woman he followed to the city months ago and get her to see that he isn't a crazed stalker, he just wants to be friends. And what better way to show that he's not trying to date her any more than roping Anna in as his fake date?
Obviously the premise is a bit far fetched (it's a romcom, who wants reality anyway?!), but it's a great story about finding closure and moving on after life throws you for a loop. The humour is fantastic and Pernille Hughes is Danish so you get quite a lot of Danish phrases, bluntness and humour, which its safe to say is a lot like my Yorkshire equivalent! Its a fun romcom, a tiny bit spicy and will definitely have you wanting to book the next available flight to Copenhagen.
💬 My Bookish Thoughts I loved this one so much. I have a long-held dream of visiting Copenhagen at any time of year, but especially during the festive season, and this book only fuelled that wanderlust. Snowy streets, twinkling lights, warmth, kindness and connection seep from every page.
I adored the premise of Anna being unexpectedly grounded and having no choice but to knock on her tenant’s door to ask for help. What follows is a slow, gentle unfolding of connection, humour and heart that felt utterly believable and deeply comforting.
☃️ The Christmas Snowmance viral video was such a clever and modern way to bring the main characters together. I loved how it created space for them to truly see one another, gradually revealing their past hurts, challenges and vulnerabilities with warmth and care.
🍷The mouthwatering descriptions of Danish Christmas edible delights had me craving pastries, hot drinks and cosy cafés, and I loved being transported to Tivoli. I’ll admit I mistakenly thought it was just a theme park, so discovering the magic of the winter gardens through this story was an absolute joy.
This book felt like pure comfort. Immersing myself in Danish Christmas traditions through words was such a treat. It’s great fun, filled with gorgeous chemistry, gentle humour and that perfect snow-globe feeling of festive romance.
Pure cosy Christmas joy, and one I’ll happily revisit.
✨ Three words: Cosy ❄️✨ Heartwarming 🤍 Immersive 🇩🇰
🙏🏼 Huge thanks to @netgalley @harpercollinsuk @onemorechapterhc and @pernillehughes for the gifted digital copy in exchange for my honest review.
You sent Pernille Hughes has been, and will always be, my absolute favourite romcom author. She has an unmatched ability to craft romances that are believable, funny, raw, heartbreaking, and undeniably hot—between characters who are flawed, loveable, and far more complex than one might expect from the genre. In A Copenhagen Snowmance, Hughes delivers all of this again in a fresh setting, with original, witty, and wonderfully real characters; the novel doubles as a love letter to Copenhagen at Christmastime, making the city itself feel like part of the cast.
As a Canadian expat who lived and worked in Copenhagen for just over half of a decade, I can say without hesitation that this book transports you there completely: a full sensory journey through a city that absolutely sparkles – literally – during the holidays. It’s the perfect gift for anyone who loves food, travel, and romance. I already can’t wait to pick it up again when the first snow falls and the holiday lights go up. And if you’re still trying to wrap your head around the meaning of hygge, this is it –defined by Hughes in this perfectly packaged Christmas gift.
What I liked: 1. The setting is amazing. It’s a major character in the story. I learned so much about Danish Christmas customs. 2. The author does a great job writing authentic sounding conversations about real problems. There isn’t a miscommunication trope. If anything, the characters communicate too much. I’ll take it, though. 3. The main couple are actually really sweet for the most part. 4. There is a scene where an asshole gets told off and I almost fist pumped.
What I did not like: 1. One character lies to the other, and I did not love how that played out. And the same character pulls a stunt that I cannot believe they didn’t recognize would be unwanted. 2. Anna is incredibly stubborn. It’s starts to feel monotonous how she repeats the same thing over and over. 3. The final conflict between the main characters involves a comment so ugly, I don’t think I could forgive it. It seemed very unrealistic that the other character was able to overlook it so easily.
This could have been a 4.5 star rating, but the final conflict dropped it down half a star.

Wow, I truly, truly loved this book and found myself zipping through the pages. Having just traveled to Copenhagen during the winter time (read: Christmas markets & snow!!) and picking up this book in a local gift shop, I couldn’t wait to crack it open. I honestly expected a straight forward, trope-y story set to the back drop of Copenhagen…and that was going to be enough for me. What Pernille gave me, though, was nuanced and beautiful and moving and so much more than I expected! It was a silly premise, but the rest of the book was filled with life lessons and messiness and it all felt so relatable but also aspirational. The two main characters were so likable and I found myself enraptured by my recent memories of the city because the author includes so many places I went! I loved the smattering of Danish, even though I still don’t understand a word of it and can’t pronounce a sound of it to save my life. What a perfect Christmas read while I’m still wanderlusting over my recent travel. If you’ve been to Copenhagen, definitely grab this book and if you haven’t, you will want to after reading!
4.5🌟stars A touching romance, steeped in the pleasures of a cold holiday season in a beautiful city. The descriptions of Danish culinary delights, from baked goods to the ubiquitous hotdog, make the mouth water, especially if you've got a sweet tooth. It seemed that Jamie, the Scottish male lead, really was Anna's fated match, especially after all of their accidental encounters at the story's start. And he's definitely not the grump Anna assumes he is. I liked his positive outlook, his generosity and his frank talk. Anna's a bit stubborn and, unfortunately, deeply affected by the way her mother raised her constantly on the move.
The story had just enough wrinkles, communication snafus and adversity to make their coming through it all to a positive outcome very satisfying. And very romantic.
Thanks to HarperCollins UK/One More Chapter and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
Anna briefly flies back to Copenhagen, fully intending to carry out a simple task and then return to London. Unfortunately the weather has other ideas and she is snowed in and has to find somewhere to stay, enter Jamie, a handsome Scot, who takes pity on her. If you prefer fast paced books this may not be for you, instead it's a deep insight into Anna's past and the affect that it had on her causing her to run from Copenhagen and have trust issues. Jamie also has issues, although not so deep, and the story concentrates on how they might find solace in each other. Meanwhile there is a wonderful sounding description of Copenhagen and places to visit, the food (especially the food) and drink. It is very emotional, although not without its lighter moments, and there are some closed door intimate scenes. You are not sure right until the end of the book on how their relationship turns out. I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book.
I listened to this audiobook after seeing it recommended on several SoMe platforms. As a Brit living in Denmark, I always find books that take place in DK a lot of fun. Although listening to the audiobooks can often be challenging as the Danish language is tricky to pronounce. (I have been disappointed many times the the author/publisher hasn’t made sure that the narrator was capable of finding out how to pronounce the necessary words)
So it was a real pleasure to hear that this author had actually found someone with real knowledge of the Danish language (although there where still a couple of small mistakes)
The story was a real pleasure to listen to, and had such a wonderful Christmas vibe. At one point I was wondering if the author had made a deal with the Copenhagen tourist board, (and I don’t mean this negatively) if not she should perhaps have considered it , as she really managed to mention all the well known places to visit in Copenhagen for a seasonal trip. 5 stars from me
I loved the setting, the real-life places and things our MCs got up to around the city (it was such a lovely touch that the author includes links at the back of the book for your own Copenhagen adventures), and I felt immersed and informed about Danish Christmas-time culture- I came away with new words and foods I hadn't heard of before! For me, this was a slow burn in terms of an actual relationship, with returned confessions in the last 10%. This was so cosy and festive due to the settings, the snow, and the warmth of descriptions, but I would just say that personally I felt this was slightly deeper than how I've seen advertised - there are themes of past infidelity, trauma, and a lot of ex talk, which isn't my thing for a sweet, cosy book. Overall, I had a nice time with it, and loved the snowy atmosphere and our cutie, if sometimes clueless MC. I received a free review copy, and all thoughts are my own.
5*s for setting — this book made me want to visit Copenhagen around Christmas, cold, darkness and all, which wouldn't normally even cross my mind.
3*s for the characters and the main relationship in the book. They both need someone who would understand, listen and treat them with respect. Unfortunately, they don't do it for each other. If I squint at it hard enough, I might summon enough suspension of disbelief to convince myself that they will be better at listening and hearing each other in the future, but the author didn't do much to show it on page.
But at least in this book characters didn't shy away from the conversations worth having, which I greatly appreciate.
As holiday books go, this is one of the enjoyable and rereadable ones.
I absolutely loved this book and need to get on a plane back to Copenhagen to enjoy all of its goodness. I love how Anna gets snowed in and has to conquer her fears back home whether she wants to or not, in no small part thanks to Jamie. This story is full of twists and turns, adventures in her city, romance and food, and lots of snow! This isn't an overtly cheesy Christmas romance and I loved that! It really made me think - when something goes wrong, do you run away and hide to get away from it, or face your fear and try and fix your life, or start afresh! A broken heart is an open heart is an amazing quote from this book (hopefully not misquoted) - and a great way to look at life!
What a great read! Now I need some of the yummy Danish pastries and the hot chocolate that Anna and Jamie enjoyed!
What an absolutely heartwarming, joy-filled read this has been!
From the very first page, this book wrapped me up like a cosy blanket on a snowy winter’s day. It’s charming, romantic, and delightfully atmospheric. The perfect festive escape!!!
What truly makes this novel stand out is how vividly Copenhagen comes to life through Hughes’ writing. The descriptions of Danish treats alone deserve their own star! Honestly, reading it felt like being led through a delicious food tour of Danish delicatessen. Every scene featuring cakes and pastries had me desperately craving a trip to the nearest bakery… or better yet, Copenhagen itself!
Anna certainly has her reasons for escaping Copenhagen in the first place. In fact, both characters had a fair amount of emotional baggage.
This was my first read by Pernille Hughes, and I am thrilled to say it won’t be my last. Her writing is witty, warm, and full of heart.
If you’re looking for a feel-good romance packed with flavour, festive spirit, and authentic charm, then this one is an absolute must-read!
I was invited by the publisher to review this book. Anna flew to Copenhagen for just a few small tasks and had every intention of leaving immediately thereafter. But then a snowstorm hits and her flight is grounded. But then enter Jamie, a Scot who is inviting in this moment of travesty.
I loved the setting for this holiday book - Christmas in a snowy Denmark, and a Scotsman to boot? Sign me up! This book had a ton of the cozy vibes that will work well during the colder seasons when you want to hunker down. And the romance between Anna and Jamie was so sweet; plus, who doesn't love a second chance at something?
Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK/One More Chapter for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
