This second book in the Immortal Boss series was as much a delight as the first. Harriet Renfield is in service to the vampire Alexandru Miramonte, as Renfields have been for centuries. She is living in the cliff-top mansion with him and his "underling" Gregor, and searching for murderers or other worthy candidates for him to feed from. All the while their growing attraction complicates matters.

If there's one thing Alexandru hates, it's a Renfield. So he doesn't love it when he catches himself thinking fondly or admiringly of Harriet. But...."Sunlight slides across her raven hair, limning her curls, one of which has escaped to caress her cheekbone." And the light is "lending her bold features a certain nobility." And "her pretty lips curl into a smile." He especially doesn't love the constant thinking about kissing, and the warmth she radiates, how "She is very much exactly as she should be. Nothing to improve upon, nothing to adjust."

Meanwhile, there is a deadly puzzle to solve! People are being murdered by crossbows! Solving a puzzle to get to the person to drain is much like feeding a puppy on a sticky mat to make mealtime more interesting. Or as Alexandru ruminates, "'A crossbow.' I close my book. 'Exquisite.' Ms. Renfield frowns. 'A man is dead. that's never exquisite.' 'Yes, fine. A tragedy of great proportion.'" Martin sets up the Deadly Puzzle mystery in a way that is hard for the reader to predict, yet makes perfect sense when all laid out. As the romance aspect of this series is slow burn (to say the least) and is not wrapped up at the end of each book, this mystery structure holds the series together well.

Meanwhile! Martin is unspooling a romance, she's presenting the monthly hunt for a killer for Alexandru to drain, and she is slowly, slowly dribbling out details of the overarching lore of the great debt Renfields owe Alexandru. "She is my Renfield. Mine to command. But also mine to defend." What is the relationship between him and Gregor? Why does Gregor resent Harriet? What did the Renfields do and when did Alexandru get the upper hand? What is the deal with Harriet's brother and does it fit? This reader wants answers and is (barely) content to wait for the next installment to get at least some. Interestingly, my son and I are doing an audio read of book one (reread for me) on our driving vacation this week, and having read book two I can see how well Martin planted some seeds and easter eggs from the very beginning.

Martin is a clever and funny writer with a different voice here than with her mafia or romcom books. The mystery du jour is treated with a light touch, the true delight comes from the push/pull of Harriet and Alexandru's growing attraction and bond. Alexandru's pov in particular remains a treat to read, he's so deadpan, and pays such barely passing lip service to trying to fit in with the "villagers" while remaining true to himself. Her authorial romance chops are on full display in creating longing and attraction, yet this series would be a great read for lovers of any genre.

Thank you to the author for the arc.

Harriet Morgan is once again busying herself with managing her immortal boss’ international financial holdings and making his dinner plans.

In Inheritance Trap, Harriet was dismayed to learn that she had inherited the Renfield curse of lifelong servitude to a vampire master. And, having made a deal to curb Alexandru Miramonte’s wanton devouring of humans, her duties now include finding him one murderer per month. In other words, prey worthy of being sucked dry.

In Deadly Puzzle, Harriet and Alexandru work as a team to find the culprit behind a string of crossbow murders. But the clues point first one way and then another and another, as if the puzzle was a set of nesting babushka dolls. It’s almost as if the murders were designed to stump the hyper-observant reasoning of a Renfield!

All the while, Harriet is finding herself torn between her warming attraction to her hot boss and repulsion for his “overlording” ways. She’s asked why Renfields are doomed to serve him, but he is circumspect. For his part, Alexandru can not believe that he is developing stirrings in the chest for this particular Renfield. He tries to convince himself that his acts of kindness towards Ms. Renfield and her loved ones are self-serving. After all, fixing her worries means she won’t be distracted from her primary focus on him. But as Alexandru slides further into new territory with his current Renfield, we start to see flashbacks to the time when he wasn’t the overlord and the one particular Renfield betrayal that may have started it all.

I always find Annika Martin’s stories to be fun, lighthearted readings that are hard to put down and easy to finish. Yes, even when the stories are about blood sucking vampires. She has me wanting more for Harriet and Alexandru’s relationship even though it’s impossible. How would that even work? He’s a thousand years old and sucks people dry to stay alive. She’s clever, considerate, lovable and far too good for him. Needless to say, I’m hooked. I’ll definitely keep reading.

This was a fabulous follow up to Book 1 in this series. With Harriet now firmly entrenched in Alexandru's life and business, the story starts straight away with our unlikely pair trying to find a possible murder to solve and hopefully keep the boss fed and the villagers safe. Luckily for them (or not...) a murderer is lurking in their very midst and when one of the Snag Tooth Rider MC members winds up dead in the middle of town with an arrow (or is it a bolt? No idea) from a crossbow in the middle of his back, a new investigation starts. They even have a suspect from the get-go: one of the locals was just let off from his prison sentence on a technicality. Everyone is pretty certain he's a murderer, though, and the timing is just too much of a coincidence for the police to let slide. The problem? Harriet isn't sure the guy did anything wrong.

I adored the first book in this series and the Deadly Puzzle was another winner for me. The cozy mystery vibes remained strong, I loved the small-town vibe running through the story and the dynamics between Harriet and Alexandru continued to be a delight to read. The contrast between the two main characters' personalities worked well and their banter and dialogue kept me turning the pages until the early hours. I liked how Harriet was methodical, clever, optimistic and upbeat. Alexandru remains my favrourite, however. He's arrogant, haughty and just delicious but the real standout for me is his dry, sarcastic and on-point dialogue (both internal and aloud). His general disdain for everything human and his unique way of turning a phrase with perfect enunciation had me laughing out loud. The romance between Harriet and Alexandru remains a slow burn with both of them unwilling to entertain the idea of something more being there but readers will be happy to see that there was a bit of positive movement in the feelings department so yay for that. The relationship between them has also started to shift as they get to know each other better and Alexandru becomes a little more fixated and possessive his Ms Renfield. We also learn a bit more about Harriet's brother's case as well as getting little snippets into Alexandru's past.

The mystery itself was really entertaining and while I'd picked who the perpetrator was before the big reveal, it was still another great case with some twists to keep you reading right up to the end. There were a couple of questions not quite answered, especially concerning the fate and guilt of the other suspects, but more might be revealed later.

If you haven't read Ms. Renfield and the Inheritance Trap (Book 1) you can certainly start here but I'd recommend starting from the beginning because it's a fabulous read and gives a little more background to the characters and premise of the series (the author gives a quick summary of the important background information where pertinent in this story, though, so rest assured you can pick up from Book 2 and those that have already read the first book will appreciate the brief recaps).

I'm already waiting for Book 3 - I love this series. Vampires and mysteries? Yes, please.

Ms. Renfield and the Deadly Puzzle was a twisty and packed with mystery that entertained and keeps you guessing. It is unique and unpredictable. Just when you think you know whodunnit, thunk again! I loved this book. It was refreshingly different with a quirky cat of characters. Alexandria is a dashing vampire on the hunt for his next meal while helping solve meets. Harriet is a former journalist, turned assistant to Alexandru. She smart and loves solving things and saving the good people of her hometown & family from becoming Alexandru's next meal. They're currently on the hunt for a killer and people keep turning up dead. And the more time Alexandru and Harriet spend together, the more we see their relationship shifting into something other than boss/employee. Will they find the killer in time, or will someone innocent be punished?

This book was stich an enjoyable read! I loved the twists and turns and the witty exchanges! This is a cobbler standalone that keeps you on your toes. I recommend reading book #1 to get a better picture of west's going on, but this is a complete standalone.

The slow burn is on!

I am really enjoying this series and because I've never read this kind of paranormal(?) romance before book 1, I am loving the slow burn of it all in Ms Renfield and the Deadly Puzzle.

I love reading how Alexandru goes from being a completely out of touch Overlord, where humans are food sources to having decidedly human feelings for Harriet. Who knew there was such a thing as glove p0rn? Not I... but Harriet definitely appreciates the dress tease.

In this book we find out why Alexandru has Renfield descendants as his money managers... and yes, there is even a kiss. I'm not really spoiling anything, I don't think. Could it actually be called a romance if there isn't kissing. I don't think so.

Anyway, I'm super glad there is more, but a part of me wishes I had waited until this series is over to read it, because waiting is definitely the worst part of this fabulous series! I love the little cliffhanger at the end of the book and let's just say, Alexandru had better stake his claim!

Ms. Renfield and the Deadly Puzzle was another winner in my book. I loved this story. There were shenanigans aplenty in this one. I loved the way things unfolded, it kept me on my toes and wholly invested. I inhaled it in one sitting. It was just so good. I enjoyed going on this journey of trying to put the pieces together before it was actually revealed but somewhere along the way I stopped trying to figure it out and instead went along for the ride. What a ride it was filled with mystery, suspense and a layering of paranormal. I loved the way other seeds were sown main character wise along the main storyline. The things that were revealed/hinted at have me salivating to get my hands on the next book. I truly enjoyed this book sadistic slow burn and all. I most definitely recommend it.

Book two was was as intresting as book 1. We’re back with Harriet and her job of hunting down “meals” for Alexandru, her boss, who is still not fond of Renfields… and while he pretends he feels nothing at all, he spends his days trying not to think about kissing her.

We’re met with suspense and mystery, which makes this book interesting and fun. I absolutely love Alexandru. I found myself sharing a lot of his characteristics—to the point where I had to check that I’m not a vampire myself.

I have a lot of questions, and I’m hoping to get answers in the next installment because this slow burn is killing me. I need a HEA like I need my next breath, and I’m excited for book 3. 🖤

The gang is back! When Ashwood is once again struck by a round of mysterious murders, Harriet and Alexandru are hot on the trail of the killer. With every twist and turn, they slowly put together the puzzle of who the murderer might be. But can Harriet solve this mystery before Alexandru goes into "beast mode" and feasts on some poor soul?
I really enjoyed the angst and comedy woven into the story. This slow burn is finally starting to show flames! I also enjoyed getting to know Gregor, Granabelle, and Harriet’s mother a bit more. Not to mention the little quirks I had forgotten about—the randomly crying babies, Alexandru’s insufferable superiority complex, and Berky’s patisserie. I want one of her almond chocolate "Berky Bombs"!
Alas, I eagerly await the next installment, where I hope our mystery guest and other parts of Harriet, Alexandru, and Gregor’s lives are fully revealed

The Deadly Puzzle😈

Harriet and Alexandru find themselves investigating the murder of a local biker in the hopes of finding a murderer for Alexandru to drain, especially now that she’s giving him a caveat of no innocents.

However, everything is telling them the person who has been implicated might just be innocent😇 Now bodies are dropping and Harriet is trying to find how they are all linked together.

Will they find the answer before it’s too late? ⏰

A great murder solving mystery. Loved getting to know these characters better…learning more about Gregor but also how the relationship between Alexandru and Harriet is also evolving…watch this space🙌

I received an advanced copy and voluntarily leave my honest review😍

MS. RENFIELD and her Immortal Pain in the...

Boss.
We may luke to pretend we're in control but not in this relationship. No, that honor is not ours at all. Alexandru might argue it's all his but those of us who have read these books- we know better.

Ms. Rendield has an uncanny ability or two. One for seeing details and making spelreadsheets. Quite another for curbing the wrath of a certain immortal boss.

While I missed listening to Alexandru, I did have fun reading the Deadly Puzzle. The wild murders, the crazy game...and the tension...yes!!!

I am very interested to see how the next book goes especially with our new guest.

May the best "man" win...

This series just keeps getting better and better! Yes, we have a mystery to solve, and many, many, interesting characters along the way. There are twists, there are turns, and there are dead ends, and all through it, our crime fighting couple clash. Great banter, great heat, great confusion as they stumble through the puzzle, and the feelings they don’t want to have. They get there, solving the crime, but it only adds another layer of tension between them, and then, that ending, we are well set up for the next installment <3

Loved this book!! Can always rely on Annika’s books to brighten my week and this didn’t disappoint.
The banter between Harriet and Alexandru was great and the warmth building between them (even if they don’t want to like each other) plus a good murder mystery and you have a book you don’t want to put down. Would love to hear this with the Audiobook (duet style) when it comes out. Can’t wait for the next instalment.

Quickish Review

This mystery series manages to give me just enough unresolved sexual tension to keep things lively, even while the mystery is clearly the focal point and is satisfyingly told. The teaser bits that build the overarching mystery of Alexandru’s past, Gregor’s true nature, as well as the Harriet’s family trauma kept me turning the page well into the night and eager to see what happens next.

We are back with the former, eh still reclusive vampire Alexandru and his now partner Harriet. They are looking to solve a murder not just for the satisfaction of being good but also hello, vampire…needs human blood…so why not take it from the bad guys. Humor, silly side characters and a daring adventure combine in the romcom mystery series. Told in first person and dual POV.

Gah!!

These books are fantastic! I love the mystery elements. The sarcastic banter and banter between the main characters are entertaining. The developments between H and G are intriguing, and the one between H and A is even more so. Who doesn’t enjoy a good adventure and a quirky family? I can’t wait for the third book in this series.
Thanks for the escape.❤️

A solid addition to this new(ish) series, once this hit my e-reader I immediately dove right in, since I'd been eagerly anticipating more Harriet and Alexandru as soon as I finished the first book, and this didn't disappoint. Well, it did kinda disappoint cause I don't know how long the wait will be, especially with this book's ending

This cozy mystery series with a slow burn romance is delightful. Ms. Martin has yet to write a book that I didn't love. I have read all of her books as Annika Martin and Carolyn Crane. She crushes every genre. Thankfully the third book in this series comes out in September.

exciting

So we get to learn a little bit more of Alexandru’s history while solving a mystery that has so many not connected points.
But Harriet ferrets out the details and the prince gets his meal eventually.

I just finished this book and I'm riding high on the "but the ending....I need more! How dare you cut me off!" endorphins and I want to hack into the author's laptop so I can read as she types the next book. The solution to the mystery and then the ending and then the bonus epilogue! I just...I have so many questions and need the answers and I'm not a patient person and ugh!

Ok let's rein it in. So, this book....
Without going into spoilers I'm going to keep this vague.

It had the perfect sarcasm and wit and shenanigans we all know and love.
It was an interesting mystery that they were solving. I had started to guess about halfway thru but wasn't sure on "why", so I do feel like it could have been fleshed out more, like maybe question the killer about why they were targeting the main person? Did the police feel ok about the last big event and still felt like they got their killer and did Harriet feel ok about the legal justice of it all? Could there be more there, especially since things were similar to the past? Am I following red herrings?

I can see this spinning off in several directions and I'm excited to see where we go next. I need to know more about the glimpses into Alexandru's past and his frenemy, if there more to the killer and the Cuyahoga Killer, and Gregor! And, of course, Harriet and Alexandru's relationship!! Annika, if you need someone to bounce ideas of, I'm here! Lol
