"Author Ed Leahy introduces a deep, strong dose of how fragmented humanity can be, whether seeking justice, witnessing crime, or enjoying the simple perverted joy of ruining people's lives." —C. Hope Clark, The Edisto Island Mysteries
Moments after Kim Brady finishes her first half-marathon, shots ring out, and three of her fellow detectives, all African-American, are hit, two fatally.
With no one from Brooklyn South available, she commences the investigation, finding a witness who identifies where the shots came from but who also claims to be descended from a Knight Templar. The media immediately speculate that the shooter is a white nationalist, but Kim refuses to jump to conclusions, and the description provided by her witness leaves room for doubt.
The mayor, in a primary fight for re-election with civil unrest mounting, heaps pressure on the NYPD to solve the shooting as soon as possible, but he is faced with a re-emergence of his feelings for Kim and a jurisdictional turf war over the investigation.
Kim must find an outside-the-box solution as well as keep the mayor at a distance. Her task grows herculean when two more cops are shot and killed in Brooklyn and two after that in Queens.
Her ability to work with multiple law enforcement agencies is put to the test, but everything's riding on her seeing what others won't.

My Thoughts: Detective Kim Brady of the NYPD is tough, smart, and beautiful.Kim just finishes a race when gunshots ring out and several people are hit - four killed. Detective Brady finds herself heading up a case of apparent racial violence, with a turf war between precincts for control of the investigation. I really enjoyed this book add to your TBR list. LIKE A GOOD RED WINE -- A good police procedural, like a good red wine, is full-bodied, balanced, and smooth. A Tempest Dropping Fire passes this test with flying colors. Detective Kim Brady of the NYPOD is tough, smart, and beautiful. When asked to head up an investigation of a police shooting that appears to be racially-motivated, she does all the right things. Edward Leahy gives us many glimpses of good police practices, including the use of cell phone tracing technology, visits to shooting ranges, and good old-fashioned teamwork. Marital issues, a partner who drinks, and a mayor who is besotted with her complicate Brady's decision-making but do not distract her from her mission. A briskly-paced murder mystery, with a strong main character who handles adversity with aplomb. Well worth reading.
In A Tempest Dropping Fire, Edward J. Leahy pens a high-stakes, slam-dunk fifth installment in the Kim Brady series that pushes the relentless NYPD detective to her limits. Tasked by the mayor to solve a racially charged mass shooting that is igniting tensions between Brooklyn North and Brooklyn South Boroughs, Brady must navigate a minefield of interdepartmental politics, personal turmoil, and a partner on the edge. Leahy--as always--deftly balances procedural grit with emotional depth, showing Brady’s unshakable commitment to justice even when the system seems determined to fail her. Tempest is a tense, timely thriller that proves why Brady’s reputation for never backing down is well earned. Highly recommend this 5-star read!
This is another great, gritty read featuring Detective Kim Brady. While her comrades are being killed in the line of duty and she’s in charge of finding the culprit, Kim is pulled in different directions. Needing to juggle the politics between the police force and the mayor, she’s also torn between her job and her relationship with her husband. The hunt for the killer hits close to her heart, making it personal for her and upping the stakes. Filled with action and emotion, this latest by Ed Leahy continues his tradition of delivering page-turning thrillers that won’t disappoint.
