I picked this one up solely based on its fun premise: a team of women traveling to BBQ competitions and solving mysteries. Oh, and they’re paranormal mysteries, featuring magic and ghosts.
I learned more than I thought possible about BBQ competitions. The strict schedule and rules paired with the cook’s responsibility to time things perfectly provided a good structure, as well as obstacles to solving the mysteries of not one but two deaths that might be murders. Throw in an additional ghost with his own information and demands, and you have an intricate web of stakes, clues, and lies. I had trouble warming to the first-person narrator, Elanor. Unlike her girlfriend Gabby, she maintains that she has no magic. She is a talented cook, though, and opinionated to the point of snobbery, but too buttoned up to display much emotion. I kept waiting for her snark to blossom fully into humor, but it didn’t quite get there. However, the events of this book may set her up to develop her own relationship with magic. The book also includes some bonus short stories featuring side characters, and fittingly for the setting, BBQ recipes.
