To Ride a Faery Steed

Rate this book
To Ride a Faery Steed is a fun little romp in the Monsters of Faery universe. Set in the Court of Bones, we get to meet Avalon Hartley, a fresh bondservant from the mortal world being sold at a semi-legal auction–and her soulmate, Ruven Kezorwyn, a shapeshifting spy known as the Harrower of Dreams.

Ruven is only too glad to claim his soulmate, but Avalon is traumatized from her near death, and Ruven wants to ensure that she can live a good life in Faery…even if that means denying them both what they want and using himself as a reward for facing her fears.

Cute little story, I'm just a little annoyed that they never ended up actually stating what their polarity is

A short and spicy (🌶️🌶️🌶️.5) romantasy full of yearning, healing, and espionage that I wish we got the deets on!

Tropes: 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5, Mate Bonds, Human x Fae, Political Systems, Healing, Bargaining

Our FMC voluntarily chose to become a bond-servant to the fae in exchange for being able to walk again, even if it meant she would never ride a horse again, and meets her mate instead! Our Wildling MMC is a prince and master spy who's determined to heal his mate. A man with impulse control, he has stipulations that must be met before he can marry. As time passes to meet these requirements, they yearn, crave, and torture each other in a wonderfully spicy way.

I knew that it was a novella when I began the book, but it was too short, I need more! Their world is so beautifully written, I could see it before my eyes, and I wish I had more story to read. I want to know about our MMC's missions, Wildlings, and their kingdom in general.

A fantasy romance of soul mates. From the moment their eyes met there was something there. Avalon was saved from death by the fae, but in turn she would be a slave. The story brings two interesting characters. Avalon being a human with her own past traumas. Ruven is far but so much more. His ability to shapeshifter almost any animal brings out his wild and unpredictable side. The story is filled with adventure and romance. The heat builds as the story goes.

Ruven Kezorwyn & Avalon Hartley.

Avalon fell off a horse, paralyzing herself from the neck down. When two fae ladies offer her a lifebond in order to walk again, Avalon jumps at the chance. But having her lifebond sold at an action wasn’t exactly what Avalon had in mind. Luckily the fae with the ridiculously high bid is her soulmate.

A wildling fae, Ruven uses his shifter abilities to play spy. In this case, “shifter” means the fae can take any form, fae, human, or animal … partial or full shifts.

“I am the Lord Castellan of Celedeis, first and bastard son of the Sovereign Princess Ulesteny Kalaine, and one of the most talented shapeshifters that has ever lived. As such, I’m probably the most important spy for the Court of Bones. They call me the Harrower of Dreams.”

So a tiny bit of drama when Ruven finds himself fleeing the auction with an unknown enemy giving chase. But that drama evaporates once Ruven gets his new soulmate home.

Ruven has a scent kink. When he keys in on a woman, he is ridiculously devoted. Unfortunately, in the past, no woman was willing to sleep with him in his natural form, an ultimate dealbreaker.

Avalon has no qualms with Ruven’s natural form. Unlike past human soulmates first seeing their fae soulmate glamoured, there is no dissonance with true shapeshifting, only the knowledge that this is Ruven in another form.

At first Avalon keeps Ruven from his desperate want want want by saying they can sleep with each other, but just sleep. But when Ruven learns Avalon is still traumatized by horses, he makes her a deal: she can ride him as a fae, once she rides him as a horse.

Novella length story.
