Love couldn't save her life. But it might save her soul. Allison Harper was drowning long before she died. Depression. Bullying. Anxiety. Suicidal thoughts. It all became too much. Now she wakes in the In-Between, a dreamlike version of the life she left behind. But no one sees her. No one hears her. Except for Al, a soft-spoken angel who appears at her side with promises of comfort and clarity, to guide her into the next life. But as Allison drifts between memories and the shifting reality on the other side, she begins to wonder if letting go is really what she wanted. In the world of the living, Jake Beckett, the boy who loved her fiercely, is left behind to face a town full of rumors. Accused of murder. Haunted by the truth. And determined to uncover it, even if it destroys him.
H. P. Brody is the author of emotionally driven romance and romantasy, known for weaving love, loss, and hope into stories that linger long after the final page. Her debut novel, Whispers from the In-Between, explores soul-deep connection beyond death, while her upcoming holiday romantic comedy, Holiday Road, delivers a cozy, softer side of her writing where the story is filled with heart and charm. Drawn to stories that live in the space between light and shadow, H. P. Brody writes about deep connections, healing, and the kind of love that defies time, distance and even worlds. When she isn’t writing, she can usually be found with a cup of coffee in hand, a book nearby, and music blaring as she dreams about new characters and worlds. A lover of details, emotional soundtracks, and late-night writing sessions, she believes that every great love story deserves a little magic and a lot of heart.
I’ll admit it upfront: tender, metaphysical love stories set partly in the afterlife aren’t my usual pick. I tend to gravitate toward grit, cynicism, or anything magical. But H.P. Brody’s Whispers From the In-Between slipped past every one of my defenses and left me quietly wrecked in the very best way. This is the rare novel that feels like a lullaby and a gut-punch at the same time. After a sudden, unresolved death, Allison Harper wakes in a shimmering, dreamlike In-Between. She’s met by Al, a wry, warm-hearted angel (think guardian with a sense of humor and zero patience for self-pity) who helps her navigate this unknown space and come to terms with everything she left unfinished. Meanwhile, back in the living world, Jake Beckett, the one person who refuses to accept the official story of her passing, starts digging for the truth.. no matter how much it costs him.
What Brody does so beautifully is let these two narratives braid together without ever feeling gimmicky. Allison’s chapters are luminous and introspective, full of wonder, regret, and wisdom. Jake’s are rawer, grounded in grief and stubborn love, the kind that makes you drive through the night just to sit outside someone’s old apartment because it still smells like them. The contrast should clash; instead, it aches. The characters are the beating heart of the book. Allison is sharp, funny, and unflinchingly honest about her flaws even after death. Jake is the kind of quietly devoted man romance novels keep trying to invent but rarely get right. And Al.. sweet Lord, Al steals every scene with perfect one-liners and the sort of compassion that doesn’t coddle. Brody has a gift for making every person on the page feel achingly real, so when they hurt, you hurt with them. Her prose is gorgeous without ever showing off: soft, fluid, and emotionally precise. She can describe a sky that isn’t quite a sky in a way that makes your chest tight, or capture the exact sound of someone’s name catching in a throat that hasn’t said it aloud in weeks. By the time the two worlds start to overlap and the whispers between them become something more, I was reading with that helpless, teary smile you get when a story is breaking your heart in the gentlest possible way. The ending! Perfectly balanced between hope and heartbreak and still managed to surprise me. Whispers From the In-Between is a love letter to the people we lose too soon, to the conversations we never got to finish, and to the mysterious grace that might, just might, wait for us on the other side. It’s tender, luminous, and deeply human.
H.P. Brody (a woman with a rare and remarkable talent) has written the kind of book that makes you want to call someone you love, just to hear their voice. I closed it grateful, devastated, and already planning to press it into the hands of everyone I know. Read it. If you trust me even a little: pick this one up on a night when you don't have anywhere to be in the morning. (H.P. Brody, you owe me sleep... and my heartfelt thanks. When can I do it again??)
This is a very emotional read, very well written and articulated. This YA novel takes us through a young woman’s journey during high school when she feels as though there’s no other option than to “leave”. I did enjoy her realizations throughout the second half of the book and how her thought processes changed. Without spoiling anything, can I get the next one now please?
It’s amazing to see this story finally out in the world. The author’s creativity and passion really shine, and fans of romantic fantasy will absolutely appreciate the atmosphere and emotional depth. Such a huge accomplishment!
H.P. Brody shares a heart wrenching story of inner turmoil of dark thoughts vs love. This book will cause you to struggle to put it down. It's easy to fall in love with her characters and excited to see what the sequel will bring to the table!!
This was so, so well written. So…real. Definitely did not see that ending coming (may have been a bit emotional to see it coming) and cannot wait to read more🖤
