“This is Jihād. Victory or martyrdom.”
— Shaykh ‘Izz ud-Dīn al-Qassām

The Al-Qassām Brigades have been widely reported in international media, particularly in connection with the Gaza. The name inspired from Shaykh Izz ud-Dīn al-Qassām. I’ve watched a few documentaries on his life, learning that he was a prominent scholar from Al-Azhar University in Cairo and a leader of the mujahideen in Sham.

The book provides just a glimpse into his resistance efforts, from his fight against Italian occupation in Libya to his anti-French struggles in Syria. It also traces his journey to Palestine and his efforts for the armed resistance there, where he embraced martyrdom. Israel’s National Security Minister Ben Gvir has renewed his threat to demolish the tomb of Shaykh Izz ud-Dīn al-Qassam, located in Haifa. In a video published on his Telegram channel Ben-Gvir said. “This is a first and important step to remove the incitement display called the tomb of Izz ud-Dīn al-Qassām from here.” He further added “the tomb of the prominent terrorist Izz ud-Dīn al-Qassām must be demolished”.

From this, you can understand the significance of Shaykh Izz ud-Dīn al-Qassām who opposed colonial powers, even after his death, remains a threat to the biggest threat to humanity: Israel. He is a forever symbol of resistance for Palestinians till the end of this world.

This book was written by Abdullah At-Tantāwi and translated into English by Mufti Abdullah. I didn’t enjoy the conversational style of the book, which then shifts into a spiritual vision of Sadiq where he and his sister Sadiqah ask some questions to Shaykh. I was also expecting a more detailed biography of him, which is difficult to find in English, but my curiosity was not fully satisfied. I do appreciate the translator’s notes regarding the position of Al-Kawakibi, who promoted some problematic ideas such as criticizing the Ottoman Empire and calling for the Khilafah to be in the hands of Arabs only. This position was influenced by the famous hadith where Rasūlullāh ﷺ said, “Khilāfat is with the Quraysh, i.e., amongst the Arabs. The Khalīfah of the Muslims must be Arab.” And Shaykh Izz ud-Dīn shared Al-Kawakibi’s opinion. The translator additionally mentioned several other individuals who exerted influence on Shaykh Izz ud-Dīn al-Qassam, whose ideological perspectives differ from the mainstream teachings of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah.

Some quotes from Shaykh Izz ud-Dīn al-Qassām in the book:

“To reject injustice, to reject colonization, to reject the Jews, to reject humiliation, to accept death and not disgrace. To embrace the grave, not life under the bayonets of colonial foreigners.”

“O protectors of the land, death, not shame. O protectors of the religion, death and not life at the mercy of the Crusaders.”

“Especially Jihād, it is the pinnacle of the hill of Islām. Jihād will continue until the Day of Qiyāmah. No nation abandons Jihād except that they will be disgraced. Beware of abandoning Jihād and fearing death. The decree of Allāh will come to pass; your time is written. It will not increase or decrease. Going forward will not decrease it. Cowardice, fear, and reluctance will not increase your lifespan.”
