David Lyalin was born in 1955 in Leningrad. An engineer by training, he worked at a research institute and earned a Ph.D. before emigrating to the United States. Since 1990, he has been living and working in Atlanta.
His bilingual (English–Russian) book Tales of a Grandfather Who Once Upon a Time Was a Grandson Himself / Рассказы дедушки, который сам когда-то был внуком was published in 2025 by Sandermoen Publishing (Switzerland). It is a collection of autobiographical stories about family, memory, and time — engaging both for general readers and for those studying Russian or English.
Lyalin’s Russian-language works have appeared in journals in the United States and Germany, including Chayka (Seagull), Sem’ Iskusstv (Seven Arts), Zametki po Evreyskoy Istorii (Notes on Jewish History), Evreyskaya Starina (Jewish Antiquity), and Masterskaya (Workshop).
He is also the author of Russian-language books Skvoz’ prizmu shakhmat. O lyubvi i prochem (Through the Prism of Chess: On Love and Other Matters) and Zeyde Maises, ili Rasskazy dedushki, kotoryy sam kogda-to byl vnukom (Zeyde Maises, or Tales of a Grandfather Who Once Upon a Time Was a Grandson Himself).
