I found this book at a market and bought it for it's cover and title. it's an old copy with a library card in it from the Leeton Shire Library from 1993.
A really interesting peak into the soul of Japanese POWs during WWII, specifically those in Australia who tried to break out of their camp, written from the perspective of one of them. it's a translation from the original Japanese print from 1967.
if you're interested in history, culture, or WWII then I recommend this for you.
A harrowing account, written as a novel, of the Japanese POW breakout at the Cowra POW camp in Australia. The account is particularly interesting in understanding the Japanese motivation to commit mass suicide and the attitudes towards prisoners.
I had heard about the Cowra Breakout as a child when I saw the telemovie. After living in Central West NSW and becoming a Japanese teacher, it renewed my interested in this story. I’m glad I read a first-hand account of the Japanese POW.
