The morning’s newspaper headline leaves Blaine Anderson reeling. Only a few hours ago she’d dragged herself, dazed and bleeding, from the smoking rubble, but it might as well have been a lifetime ago—because now the world believes she is dead.
Before Blaine can reach her husband, the bomber strikes again. With terrifying clarity, she realizes he’s bent on wiping out the witnesses to his crime—and she’s one of them. Without money and ID, she becomes Mary Blaine, hiding in a homeless shelter, knowing it’s too dangerous to go home.
Meanwhile, her husband, Mark, realizes his carefully managed life is beginning to crumble. After years of taking Blaine for granted, he finally grasps how nothing—not even a promising career in politics—is worth it without her by his side. Desperately, he searches for anyone who was with Blaine just prior to the blast. But instead, he finds something—someone—much more important.
Blaine Anderson visits a clinic and there is an explosion. She discovers that someone was trying to kill her and ends up on the street, afraid to go home.
A very heart-wrenching romantic suspense. I wasn't sure how this could be a romance when the 2 main characters were separated by such dire circumstances. But it was. I wasn't expecting such a suspenseful story from this author. I have read some of her western romances and this is nothing like them.
You don't know what you have until you lose it and that is what this book is about. Those who have wealth don't know those who don't have anything and don't really see them on the streets but Mary did. When someone tried to kill her and she realized that if she went to her husband, they would kill him too, she turned to the streets and the homeless. She meets so many people that were there for each other and cared about each other. This was a whole another world to her and she felt alive for the first time since she married Mark ten years ago. She had become his sounding board, planner and social secretary without him knowing anything about her. He relied on her for everything but put work first when he should have turned to her. Mark lost his life and his heart when his wife went missing and he finally realized just how important she was to him. They both changed during the time she was away and it was for the best. Wonderful book and great story.
Wonderful book. Hard to put down. Wife goes to a women's health clinic which is bombed...she discovers she was the target...someone wants her dead. Exciting story line with the husband first thinking she was killed, then after learning there was a mistaken identification, thinks she has left him. Jodi Thomas is a super writer. Always well written and an interesting plot.
Not what I expected--though I'm not sure what that was. This isn't a story about someone who goes into long term hiding. It takes place over a few weeks, but a lot of stuff happens. Besides the suspense, it's about family--the kind of family you collect rather than being born into. I liked it a lot.
This one is about Blaine Anderson who has it all. She has a husband who is a lawyer, nice home. When she thinks that she might be pregnant - which she thinks her husband doesn't want - she makes an appointment at a local clinic to have a test done..
While at the clinic - her life changes..Someone has placed a bomb there and Blaine barely escapes with her life..Since she is thrown away from the scene, no one notices her..She tries to get to her husband to let him know she okay, but in doing that she finds out that the bomb was meant for her!
No knowing if her husband is involved, Blaine joins the homeless..She has no money, no clothes and no where to go where she will be safe.
A great read on how Blaine really finds her life again!
I really enjoyed this book. It was about a woman's life and what happens after a bombing and how she deals with it and how her life needs to change. It also has the her husband's point of view too and how he feels once she is missing. I really thought is was great!
I enjoyed this book very much. The author did some nice detail on the life of homeless. And the character really went through some heart pumping scenes. Got a little slow at the end but I thought the book was well written.
I love Jodi Thomas books. Often when reading earlier books by an author I like I am disappointed. Not this time. This is a book full of heart. I raced thru it because I really wanted to find out what happens.
I enjoyed this book. It kept me interested and looking forward to the time I could spend reading. I did wish I knew more about the other characters in the book. Maybe that would be a good sequel.
Was so captivated. Very well written and the feelings were so real and present. Everything they felt, I did. Heart swelling with love and hope right down to the loss and grief.
Something different from Jodi Thomas. Ms. Thomas usually writes books set in Texas, either historical after the Civil War times or current times. This is a bit different in that it is a thriller. Mary Blaine goes to a clinic to find out if she might be pregnant or maybe sick. While she is there, a man blows up the clinic and tries to kill her. Her husband is a lawyer who wants to run for the head of the Railroad Commission. Mary is concerned that her husband could be in danger so she stays on the streets with other homeless people and tries to figure out what is going on. Meanwhile, she learns about a different life than the one she has and starts to see her life in a different way. Meanwhile, her husband is realizing his carefully controlled life is falling apart without Mary. He starts to realize he has neglected her and he wants another chance to make it right as he loves her. Something a little different from a great author.
I actually really like this book but I didn't want to give it four stars. I would have given it 3.5 if I could have. The story is actually really interesting and very touching, but I'm just not sure the writing was exceptional. in spite of that, I'd recommend reading the book, it's an interesting story about someone out to kill someone and it takes a while to put all the clues together. there is some unexpected twists and turns along the way, but the most surprising thing was the heartfelt revelations the main characters recognize in going through the struggle.
This is the story of a society girl who is suddenly thrust into the world of the homeless. A killer is searching for her and she must stay hidden to save her life and her husband's.
The tension is carried throughout the book. Seeing life through the eyes of the homeless is heartwarming and I fell in love with the characters. Great book that was hard to put down.
Four stars because of strongly suggestive sexual scenes which are a drag on the action.
I really enjoyed the story line. It got a little repetitive at times. Some parts rather unbelievable, but overall a good read. I enjoyed the homeless characters and the neighbor Lilly. It was suspenseful at times and kept me guessing until the end. In only a few weeks of terrible circumstances two people realized what was important in their lives. Blaine started out as a timid shallow person and transformed. It was like they both woke up from sleep walking through their everyday lives.
The book started out great, I couldn't stop reading, I was captivated! When I got to the middle, the story started dragging, each chapter was the same. There were some chapters that could have been deleted without changing the story. The book finally picked up again the final 5 chapters. All in all it was a good boom.
Reading this book years after publication is testament that there are fantastic books out there that just need to be read. I have never read a book by this author, but I will certainly be checking out more of them. This was an excellent psychological thriller before we called them that! Great books filled with interesting characters and constant thrills.
Wow, such a good book! It had claws in me like a cat from the beginning. It has plenty of intrigue and it had me realizing how important the people around us are. It's a poignant love story and a tense thriller as well
There are very few books I can or have read again, and this one is good enough I would give it a go. Caught me from the start and held me until the end. I wasn't ready for the end but it came anyway. Thanks for a great Saturday afternoon.
Jodi Thomas never disappoints! This was an interesting story, very believable. So many books have the same story line that has been written time and time again. Not this author's books! Thank you, Jodi, for another original!
I really wanted to give this book 5 stars. It started out so well!! Then the continuity errors started creeping in. Exactly how many Thursdays ARE there in one week?? And then there was the part where Mark was talking to Rendel(sp) and the author called Rendel "Miller".
This book grabbed my attention from the first page and kept it to the end...hanging on to my seat. Great insights and characters. Will definitely be reading more of Jodi Thomas's books!
