About the author

Michael Holroyd is the author of acclaimed biographies of George Bernard Shaw, the painter Augustus John, Lytton Strachey, and Ellen Terry and Henry Irving, as well as two memoirs, Basil Street Blues and Mosaic. Knighted for his services to literature, he is the president emeritus of the Royal Society of Literature and the only nonfiction writer to have been awarded the David Cohen British Prize for Literature. His previous book, A Strange Eventful History, won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for biography in 2009. He lives in London with his wife, the novelist Margaret Drabble.

Avevo questo volume in libreria da moltissimo tempo.
La fascinazione per Bloomsbury non penso vada spiegata o giustificata.
Lytton Strachey è uno di quei personaggi che, purtroppo, in Italia non è molto conosciuto, almeno non al di fuori della cerchia ristretta degli appassionati e degli studiosi.
Leggere la biografia che Holroyd scrive del Biografo con la B maiuscola, di colui che, secondo molti, ha rifondato la Biografia come genere degno di valore letterario oltre che storico-scientifico è stata davvero un'esperienza.
E' un volume davvero denso e necessità, naturalmente, di una seppur minima conoscenza di base di Bloomsbury, dei suoi personaggi e delle sue dinamiche.
Lettura interessante, ricca di spunti e di informazioni.

Di Bloomsbury c’è veramente poco, del resto la vicenda inizia in medias res, e cioè dal 1916 quando Strachey e Carrington si incontrano. Da quel momento sono narrati i sedici anni di convivenza dei due, con i valzer di amici, amanti, conoscenti del bel mondo che entrano ed escono dalle loro stanze e dai loro letti.
Né biografia incentrata sul privato, né biografia letteraria, è costruita soprattutto sul dragaggio dei numerosi carteggi e sui colloqui privati avuti dall’autore con i personaggi coinvolti. Forse più adatta a chi conosce già il contesto e e le persone citate.

This is the closest book, I could find that resonates with my memory. At about 15 years old I found this book or one like it in the Ludington Public Libary. I can remember the picture of Carrington. She was beautiful, sensitive, creative, and made charming drawings. Her love for Lytton was so dramatic and tragic.

If I needed a reminder this late in life that criticism and breakdown of books into their minute component parts is not to my taste...this book reinforced it in spades. I struggled and skimmed and struggled and finally had to give up huge sections. Frankly I would rather read the books myself and make my own judgments. When I ordered it...I thought it was something else.
