After a long, snowy trek through the Himalayas, Batgirl and her crew arrive at a hidden refuge deep within the mountains. But there’s no time to let their guard down as the Unburied threat returns seeking blood, and Nyssa al Ghul attempts to get Batgirl to join her cause against them. Dark secrets threaten to pull Batgirl into a war she never wanted and force her to confront ghosts from her past and present. Has Nyssa truly turned over a new leaf? And will Cass align herself with old enemies to exact justice against the Unburied for the murder of Lady Shiva?
Poor Cassandra can never figure out who to trust. While working with a team organized by Nyssa al Ghul, Cass discovers the people she thought were at fault might have been victims themselves, triggering a trauma response. Cass has been compared with Damian Wayne on many occasions, but this echoes something similar that he experienced recently over in Batman & Robin. I believe strongly that their similarities don’t make either character redundant, but rather complement each other well. I loved to see this exploration of past trauma and the way it affects and motivates Damian now, so I look forward to seeing how it plays out with Cass. I think it’s really important for comics to depict the emotional and mental toll that superheroes suffer, as it humanizes them and is relatable to readers. There’s also something interesting happening here with Angel Breaker and Nyssa al Ghul, and some tension between Cass and Tenji that I hope resolves in a satisfying way.
This is a slower issue where Batgirl is trying to figure out some things that only she can deal with. Then we get towards the end and it appears that someone among them is lying and can't be trusted. I appreciate this issue for the slow tension and buildup and spending time to develop the cast of characters.
NoNoNoNoNoNo, I just knew it couldn’t go down that easy but Cass I am begging you to see the truth and look past the vengeance thing this isn’t healthy and as Jaya said during your training with her, you need to look inside and heal yourself before you can learn to heal others. So leaving off from the last issue, the big plan to end the war between the unburied and the league of shadows setup in Samsara is to head into their outpost with all of their blue poppies and secretly destroy them. This will leave them without the power to boost their strength and heal quickly and they will flee without anyone dying. Sounds too good to be true and it definitely is. Before heading out everyone gets a bit of training and self reflection. Cass is having a hard time quelling the darkness inside of her from the death of her mother all the way back to her first kill, Tenji is struggling a bit with his relationship to his sister and the shape shifter Aruba is not making it easier by trying to pull out any cracks in the relationship with his sister, and we get a bit of insight into Nyssa’s unfeeling relationship with angel breaker as AB tries to get Nyssa to see that maybe they should just leave and that the dream she is fulfilling here is not her own but her fathers. A very consistent issue with the daughters of Ra’s Al Ghul, lol.
But as the operation commenced they use Aruna to sneak inside the compound disguised as one of the guards to lure them out for a “disturbance.” The disturbance is Cass junking down from up high and barreling down towards them as she swiftly jumps around and takes a them all out and secures their group a few outfits to sneak inside the with. Training is over and it’s no time to get distracted. But immediately as they walk in it’s not at all what expected, this isn’t some war outpost this is a full civilization. Sure there are guards and Aruna is able to guide them towards the poppy store location but there are also festivities and children running around. Suddenly Cass is thrown back as a puppet show starts up telling the story of their land, it could be propaganda but it seems really convincing as it completely contradicts Nyssa’s story. Samsara was the home to the unburied before Ra’s and Nyssa came and slaughtered the people, their blood making way for the first blue poppies. At this point Cass is pretty pissed that Nyssa lied, but then the story shifts to her mother’s arrival in their group and her death at the hands of Kalden. And just as Cass was having a panic attack and remembering back to the death she has caused and her mother’s own death she sees him…the real Kalden the unseen, and with her mothers sword in hand she sees how easy it could be to take him down right now. Oh no.
