every town's insolent woman is a collection of poems
born from girlhood's quiet rebellion and womanhood's loud reckoning. these pages hold the voices that were once whispered about behind closed doors - the too-much, too-loud, too-free woman in every neighborhood, every hallway, every mirror.
it's a book for the dreamers, the writers and readers, the rebels and the rude, the nice and the sweet. for the loners who prefer the company of their own imagination. it's a starkly real account of dreams, ideas, emotions, love, betrayals, and life itself. in short, it's a book for you and me and everyone else, too, and it's an utter masterpiece
it was so refreshing to read such an impactful and beautiful book of poetry after being stuck on the same sylvia plath book for three years. this is easily my favorite book of poetry ever written, and one of my favorite books of all time as well
everything about this book was absolute, hard-hitting, deep, PERFECTION. I'm a massive reader (it's basically my entire personality) and I have extraordinarily high standards when it comes to books. it truly takes an extremely well-written, emotional, and intellectual book to make it onto my five-star list. this book is a six-star read. basically, it takes a lot to impress me, and "every town's insolent women" did it tenfold
I have been subscribed to jessica's (the author) substack for ages because she truly is an absolutely amazing writer, and that's how I discovered this book. as soon as I realized that it was on kindle unlimited, I dove straight into it
I genuinely don't even have words to describe how deeply this book struck me (in the best way possible ofc), not a beautiful enough writing style to do it justice, so I'll let jess's stunning words give you a peek inside her incredible imaginative yet real world of poetry
★ "but rather, i existed in fables and dreams of my youth, warm lights mirroring wonder, and magic, muting harrowing truths." ★
★ "i tend to stare at faces of treachery and mistaken them for care, clinging to the concept that in each timeline, someone will in someway, be there." ★
★ "when i close my eyes, i can reside in a timeline that is all mine— where only, the obscure, survive." ★
★ "mosaics of gentle moments that have left their mark, infinite twinkles of warmth illuminated pathways sprinkle in the dark." ★
and these are just a few!! seriously I have over 50 kindle highlights and that was me restraining myself. I would have highlighted the whole book if I could
I’m not usually a poetry fan, but the vibes and message of Jessica’s poetry are so beautiful and relatable as a woman. I connected with so many of her words and highly recommend this book!
I loved this book of poems so much. The author weaves together short poems that are intimately personal but also widely relatable. Oh, and the drawings...!! So glad I found these works!
this was my first time reading a poetry book and it was an incredible introduction. I was intrigued from the beginning and the author takes you on a ride through the struggles and triumphs of being a woman. I recommend this book!
4.5 stars. I loved these poems. I resonated with them as a survivor of SA. The only reason it took me a while to finish was due to the heavy themes. I’m glad I took my time to enjoy it at my own pace. I would definitely read it again.
